A love of language brought Letizia Cazzaniga nearly 4,000 miles from Milan, Italy to Amityville Memorial High School. The senior said she is thoroughly enjoying her year as a foreign exchange student and her immersion in American culture. Let’s Take In Some Culture This Weekend “Give every day the chance to become the most beautiful day of your life.” - Unknown

week ahead, we can sometimes lose sight of the opportunity that each weekend holds for us. As I edit the Coming Events Around Town calendar each week for the newspaper, I see so many interesting and culturally enriching events taking place throughout Long Island. I will admit, I have been guilty of thinking, “Note to self. You have to go check this out,” and then I’ll get sidetracked and forget to go. I’ll let myself get so swept up in life that the days will get away from me. It happens to the best of us. But the twenty-four hours that we are granted each day are filled with endless promise, and we owe it to ourselves to make the most of them whenever possible. When it comes to squeezing every ounce of opportunity out of each weekday in terms of career, I’m batting a thousand. But I’ve been slacking a bit on squeezing every ounce of life and enjoyment out of the 48 hours between Friday night and Sunday night. Let’s make this a collective challenge! Each weekend, let’s

When was the last time you took in a nice play, or a concert in an intimate venue? Perhaps an art gallery showing, featuring some local up and coming artists, or a museum exhibit? I don’t know about you, but culture really feeds my soul. A weekend spent entrenched in the arts or science or history can feel akin to a mini-vacation, and makes me feel connected to my humanity and the world around me. Come to think of it, a nourishing hobby can do the same; whether it is volunteering at your local animal shelter, jewelry making, horseback riding (my personal favorite) or rockclimbing. It could be just about anything. I can’t speak for everyone, but for those of us who are often entrenched in the routine of grocery shopping, play dates, errands and preparing for the

Look at everything the area has to offer, from movie screenings and crafting, to classes, lectures and music events. Next time something catches your eye, stop in your tracks, make plans and get tickets, or simply make a reservation. Incidentally, you would be surprised at the amount of free activities around town. Feeling like a homebody this winter? Invite a bunch of friends over for a Saturday night potluck dinner and classic movie screening. Share laughs, memories and great food. Then take in some classic films in your living room. Maybe even break out a board game or two. Do something that will have you skipping back to work or school, or the Monday routine, with newfound vigor. I’m holding myself to this one too. Testing Their Strength Fifth-graders at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District were challenged to be architects and engineers during a recent library class.

After reading the book “Twenty-One Elephants and Still Standing,” which tells the story of the building of the Brooklyn Bridge, the students were tasked with creating their

own bridges. Working in small groups, the builders used 42 Citi Blocks to create their own bridge, strong enough to hold a water bottle and with room to pass below the bridge.

PARTNERING FOR SAFE SCHOOLS - Deputy Sheriff Amie Rodecker was among the guest speakers from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department who recently visited Amityville Memorial High School to present the “Say Something” program. The initiative is a collaboration between County Sheriff Errol Toulon’s office and the Sandy Hook Promise. Deputy sheriffs visited social studies classes and taught students how to notice the signs and symptoms of a fellow student in distress or with bad intentions. With so much attention directed their way, brides might look for ways to tone their upper bodies for the big day.

Mrs. Arlene E. Syrett, a resident of Massapequa Park, LI (formerly of Amityville), died January 6, 2019 at her home. She was 9 years old. Mrs. Syrett was born on May 2, 1926 to Seth Platt , Sr. and Ethel M. (Noble) Purdy in Amityville. In addition to caring for her husband and family Mrs. Syrett was employed by Ketcham, Colyer Insurance Agency in the clerical field. She was predeceased by her husband William H. in January 1980 and her brother Andrew W. Survivors include her children Karen Bailey (Lee), and David M. (Rose M.), her grandchildren Jennifer Fioranelli (Philip), Stephen Bailey, Megan E. Schulze, Lauren M Bender (Tammy), and Ashley R. Syrett, and her brother Seth P. Purdy. January’s Charity of the Month is: PBS Community Foundation

The PBS Community Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, was established to help people with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities and other special needs. They particularly focus on selfdetermination and full inclusion in the local community. Their mission is to help these individuals access the support and services they need to become active and productive members of the community, as well as encourage long-term planning and to support efforts towards establishing social connections and friendships in the community. For individuals with disabilities, the movement away from inadequate and segregated institutional congregate custodial care has been taking place for 40 years. Now more than ever, individuals with disabilities are seeking the opportunity to stay in their own communities and pursue their personal goals, while receiving the needed levels of support to make full community inclusion a sustainable reality. In New York State, anyone who is eligible for OPWDD Services (NYS Office For People With Developmental Disabilities) and enrolled in the Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) Waiver, can choose to selfdirect their services. As of September 30, 2018, there were 2,926 individuals enrolled in ‘Self Direction’ on Long Island. (Source: NYS OPWDD) Self-Direction is a person-centered approach that empowers individuals with developmental disabilities to create a life plan with supports that they chose, based on their unique strengths, needs and goals. It also gives the individual more control over

how funding is used to purchase needed support and services. While the number of individuals choosing to self direct their services is quickly growing, the PBS Community Foundation aims to provide support through grass roots, community based networks. The PBS Community Foundation initiatives started with Big Time Glee, a singing group that now meets twice a month in Smithtown. This group performs at various events such as Long Island Ducks games! In response to numerous requests from the Self-Directed community, the Foundation created a similar group in Nassau, which meets monthly in Bellmore. This is called the Nassau Voice. Aditionally, another initative, The Crafting Connection, meets every other week to work on different crafty projects or just to socialize and play games. More recently, Self-Directed individuals are focusing on the health of their mind and body. The PBS Community Foundation offers Yoga Without Boundaries twice a month at the Yoga Darshana Center in West Babylon. This center generously donates the space and Dan Elfawal, a certified special educator and yoga instructor, leads a free yoga class open to individuals with all abilities. Dan says the students walk away focused, calm and self confident. Through the practice of yoga, students build strength and develop coping skills, which can lead to a healthier lifestyle. Continued From 5 dystopian literature, journalism, college French and Advanced Placement Spanish. She is taking algebra, plays the violin for the orchestra and sings in the chorus. Letizia was excited to participate in the winter concerts. She noted that schools in Italy typically do not

have instrumental music instruction. She said two differences about going to high school in the United States are the earlier start time and changing classes. There is also a greater emphasis on critical thinking while in Italy the focus is learning material and studying for tests. When she returns

home, she will have one more year of high school remaining. Letizia hopes to attend college in Paris or the Netherlands and said possible majors include architecture or interior design. Her host family in Amityville and the students at the high school have been very welcoming,

she said. Letizia spent much of her holiday break visiting sights in New York City including the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Christmas tree and World Trade Center memorial site. She has also been to Washington, D.C. and North Carolina since her arrival. While she misses her

family and friends in Milan, Letizia said she is able to stay in contact with them through telephone and Facetime. Family members who live in Texas have come to New York to visit her. “We are very pleased that Letizia decided to spend the year with us here in Amityville,” Principal

Maria Andreotti said. “We have amazing programs and activities at the high school and are happy Letizia will get the share those experiences with our students. Through knowing her, students are learning more about Italy, and, as an ItalianAmerican myself, I take great pride in that as well.”
