Recently, Amityville Memorial High School held two Honor Roll ceremonies: one for 11th and 12th grade students and a second ceremony for 9th and 10th grade students. Students who received a High Honor Roll obtained a grade point average of 89.5 to 100. Students who received Honor Roll obtained a grade point average between 84.5 to 89.4. There were a total of

337 recipients. Amityville Memorial High School Principal Edward Plaia spoke about the accomplishment of achieving Honor Roll status, the importance of education and keeping high expectations. “I could not be prouder of our Honor Roll students. Their achievements are a testament to the variety of opportunities our school continues to provide to our students.

I am impressed by their dedication to push themselves academically. Donating Blood The Foods You Eat Could Affect Whether Or Not You Can Donate The foods a person eats before attempting to donate blood could affect whether or not he or she is allowed to donate. According to the American Red Cross, its staff members routinely check the level of hemoglobin in donors’ blood and platelets before they accept donations. Hemoglobin is a protein in

the body that contains iron and gives blood its distinctive red color. Hemoglobin plays a vital role in human health, carrying oxygen from the lungs to nourish all of the tissues in the body. Hemoglobin levels are checked using fingersticks, and if hemoglobin levels are low, then donors will

be asked to wait to donate until their levels return to normal. So what does food have to do with hemoglobin? Iron is a part of hemoglobin and found in many of the foods a person eats. Iron helps people maintain their strength and energy, and it’s also necessary to help the body make new blood

cells to replace the ones that are lost through blood donations. The Red Cross encourages prospective donors to eat healthy foods that are rich in iron and high in vitamin C, as doing so can increase their chances of being accepted as blood donors and can aid in their recoveries after donating.

Anna was instrumental in coordinating the application process and assistance in the facility receiving the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award both Bronze and Silver.

ANNA JULIEN RN, MHA Dominican Village welcomes Anna Julien (RN, MHA) to the position of Director of Operations. Anna began her career in nursing as a nursing assistant in Central Massachusetts and went on to receive her LPN and RN degrees. Anna and her family moved to New York as an RN Special Project Coordinator working with residents and staff on improving residents’ experience from admission to discharge and working with facility staff and professional team in developing a resident center care environment. With an interest in enhancing her knowledge of long term care management, Anna returned to school Hunter College to earn a BSN. She later received her MSN/MHA from the University of Phoenix, Arizona, and has her BELS Certification. For the past five years, Anna has held the position of Director of Nursing Services at Meadow Park Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Flushing, Queens. Anna is very proud of working with the professional team as its Director of Staff Education, Training and Research at Schulman and Schachne Institute for Nursing and Rehabilitation, Brookdale University Hospital in Brooklyn. Specifically,

This year’s Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach will be the U.S. Navy Blue Angel’s 9th appearance as headliners at the show. Over 367,000 people attended the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach the last time the squadron headlined in 2018. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels were also scheduled to perform again in 2020 when the show was cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Instead, the team participated in the first Bethpage Virtual Air Show in 2020 by recording special video messages for fans and providing exclusive video footage. Annual exams play a vital role in staying healthy and are highly recommended by primary care physicians. Even if you’re feeling well, a regular assessment allows your doctor to have a complete picture of your physical wellbeing and help establish goals that include proper diet, exercise and weight management. Catholic Health Physician Partners Primary Care Physician Danielle Amisano, DO, discusses the importance of annual exams and the role they play in helping your doctor develop a plan to keep you healthy.

Q: What role does a primary care doctor play in annual checkups? A: As a primary care physician, my goal is to establish who you are on your best day in order to better help you on your worst day. This allows us to build a more complete understanding of how lifestyle affects health and enables us to better treat our patients when they are sick. As with most relationships, the key to success is a strong foundation of mutual trust. I approach my role in annual visits as a coach, mentor, counselor and confidant. Q: At what age would you suggest starting the habit of annual exams? A: My suggestion is to start at any age. No matter your phase of life, you and your physician can work together to prepare for any challenges. Our bodies are constantly changing and being affected by our choices. It is important that we move away from looking at our health as a dichotomy between feeling sick and feeling well.

Q: Why are annual exams so important? A: An annual exam is an opportunity to identify and address health issues and develop a personalized roadmap for the year ahead. From setting exercise and weight loss goals to practicing healthy forms of stress management, your doctor can work to develop a plan that will allow you to live a healthy life. New York Farm Bureau Seeking 2022 Scholarship Applicants New York high school seniors who are graduating and interested in pursuing a career in agriculture can apply for New York Farm Bureau’s Agricultural Youth Scholarship. Eligible students can use the financial award for college or advanced training in the skilled trades. Statewide winners can earn up to $3,000 towards their future education. The applicant or their

family must be a New York Farm Bureau member, and the student must live and/or work a farm or be involved with agriculture in the state. The student must also complete the application which includes writing an essay addressing what they value and stand for in agriculture and life and how these values have impacted their decision to pursue an agricultural career.

Scoring will determine both county and district winners and may include a personal interview. Each district winner will receive $250 and then compete for one of two state scholarships worth $3,000 and $2,000, based on their submitted applications. Applications must be submitted by March 1, 2022, and the judging will take place prior to April 20, 2022.
