Tech-savvy students are getting the opportunity to try their hand at coding using different computer languages thanks to Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School’s Coding Club. With attendance ranging from 20-25 students, the Coding Club meets every Tuesday throughout the school year under the advisement of business teacher Diana LaSpina. Members spend the first half of the meeting working together on a project and break away for their free time during

the second half. They have participated in Hour of Code and are currently learning JavaScript in the Khan Academy. Students use resources such as Coding Wizards, Code.org and Dojo to build their coding knowledge. “The Coding Club gives students an opportunity to fuel their love of technology and coding outside of the classroom,” LaSpina said. Each time they complete a new skill, they get a badge and certificate to show their coding progression.

realization was in accepting that certain people will never change, will never become what you wish them to be, will never react in the way you have determined to be most appropriate; these expectations are simply unrealistic, and an almost guaranteed recipe for disappointment. Along the same vein, the topic of my favorite weekly podcast happened to coincide in discussing the process of being able to manage anticipation in such a way as to not have your psyche completely crushed if they don’t happen to be met. It focused on envisioning your ideal situation, enjoying it in the context of something hopeful on the horizon - and then letting it go and accepting the current context for what it is, being in the moment and choosing a constructive way to deal with it.

Easier said than done, to be sure. But such is the essence of life. If there were no obstacles, where would the satisfaction be in overcoming them? How would we even know if we were moving forward, or simply existing in complacency, never striving for something better? I know, most readers would probably prefer that level of contentment; but reality is seldom this simple. And so, we press on - minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year… until someday, at some point in time, we look back to realize that we have, in fact, accomplished quite a bit by simply being able to rise above and persevere. As different as the individual journeys may be, I think it’s safe to say this is a common goal. Here’s to smoother paths ahead.

All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. Three new and two existing Town of Babylon officials took the Oath of Office before the January 2nd, 2018 board meeting at Town Hall in Lindenhurst. Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez began their new terms after being re-elected in November. Councilman Anthony Manetta and Town Clerk Geraldine Compitello began their first terms in office following their victories. Councilman Terence McSweeney also began his first term in office after being appointed by Supervisor Schaffer to fill the seat left vacant by former Councilman Tom Donnelly. The appointment was unanimously approved by the Town Board at the beginning of the meeting. Councilman Manetta is the former CEO and executive director of the Suffolk County Industrial Development Agency (IDA). There, he worked on economic development projects and community outreach.

Babylon were on-hand to swear-in all five officials. Lindenhurst Village Mayor Michael Lavorata read the Oath of Office to Schaffer, Martinez and Manetta. Amityville Village Mayor Dennis Siry recited it with Compitello, and Babylon Village Mayor Ralph Scordino assisted McSweeney. “Everything that we do has the residents’ best interests in mind. We work hard to serve the public as best as we can. Terry, Anthony and Gerry will help us continue to do that and I am excited to see what we can accomplish during this term,” said Martinez. Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, now the senior Town Board member, was also on-hand to welcome her new colleagues. Outgoing members of the Town Board include former Councilmen Tom Donnelly and Lindsay Henry, as well as former Town Clerk Carol Quirk.

Councilman McSweeney is 14-year veteran of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) and a volunteer firefighter in North Babylon. He has spent the past several years in different roles in his community, most recently as a special assistant to Supervisor Schaffer. Compitello, an Amityville native, worked in Supervisor Schaffer’s office as Deputy Chief of Staff since 2013. She has worked on special projects for the Town in that role, most recently the construction of a specialized respite park for individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s. “Terry, Anthony and Gerry will all be great additions to the Town Board,” said Schaffer at the front of a crowded town board room. “When I started here, I was the youngest member of the Town Board. Making the Case

On December 1st, 2017, attorney Irving Like was the guest speaker at the Long Island Metro Business Action (LIMBA) meeting, which was held at the Courtyard Marriott in Ronkonkoma, where he emphasized the need to designate the Fire Island National Seashore (FINS) as a World Heritage Site. He was joined by Dr. John Tanacredi, Director, Center for Environmental

Research and Coastal Oceans Monitoring (CERCOM), Molloy College, who is seeking to designate the horseshoe crab as a World Threatened Species, and Molloy College students who also attended the meeting. Mr. Like told those in attendance that the FINS needs to be protected because of the existential threat of climate change and rising sea levels,

which, in turn, would have a ruinous effect not just on the environment, but on the economy and pose a threat to our national security. He fought Robert Moses’ plans to build a road on Fire Island from Field 5 at Robert Moses Park to the Shirley bridge - which would have destroyed the villages in its path - along with a group of concerned Long Islanders such as Paul Townsend, Founder,

LIMBA and Murray Barbash, a conservationist builder. The group successfully lobbied Congress to create FINS. Molloy College is collaborating with Mr. Like on this campaign. He said he is fortunate to work with a prominent Catholic college and pointed out that the designations they seek comply with Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical Laudato Si, which calls for action to address the existential threats of climate change and rising sea levels. He also said he will seek outreach from the Vatican for viral support. Among Mr. Like’s arguments for the designation for FINS included the seashore’s proximity to New York City

- a world-class city and the seat of the United Nations - and one of the city’s National Heritage Sites (Statue of Liberty) and a National Historical Site (Ellis Island) and its ability to meet the World Heritage Site criteria as established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). According to UNESCO, to be selected as a World Heritage Site, the nominated site must already be classified as a landmark and unique in some respect as a geographically and historically identifiable place with special cultural or physical significance. Dr. Tanacredi also reminded those in attendance that the

horseshoe crab, which has been on this planet for 450 million years, is on the verge of extinction. He pointed out that, in parts of Asia, horseshoe crab is considered a delicacy at many of its restaurants; in the U.S., it is used as bait, and pharmaceutical companies bleed them out and use their blood to develop life-saving medications. According to Dr. Tanacredi, the horseshoe crab population is declining each year at an 8% clip and, if this goes unchecked, the crab will be extinct within 10 years. Watch Out For The Post-Holiday “Blues”

Christmas and New Years are here and gone! All the hustle and bustle of the holidays have left many of us exhausted. We now begin to pack away all the decorations and begin planning for next year. Friends and relatives came together in the spirit of love and kindness and are returning to the grind of everyday normal life. Alas, the old cliché shall be spoken often in the next few weeks, “Why can’t the Christmas Spirit last all year long?” Something we should all be aware of is the “Post-Holidays’ Blues Syndrome.” We all suffer from this syndrome to some degree. Some of us just seem a little down and cannot get our act together. Some of us refuse to put away the decorations. We tend to blame the feeling on exhaustion, or being too busy, but it is a form of the BLUES. Some people however suffer very severely from this syndrome. Consider the person who just lost a loved one recently and suffered through another such season. Consider, also orphaned or troubled children who are lavished with gifts and attention for the holiday season and feel unloved and forgotten about for the rest of the year. Think a moment about those who are unable to get out of their houses and have visitors for 20 days in December, but do not see anyone for the rest of the year. Please don’t get me wrong, I think it is very important and wonderful the spirit of Christmas that touches so many people. But, I just want to point out a few reasons why some people suffer from severe Post-Holiday Blues. There are many other reasons why some people may suffer from this syndrome. And this syndrome may be the beginning of a more severe depression which may grow, especially during the bleak and dismal months of January and February. So if you suffer from a mild case of Post-Holiday Blues, be secure in the knowledge that it is normal and that many people suffer along with you; but also be aware that some people suffer from a very severe case of this syndrome and they should be watched. One of the best remedies to cure your “Blues” is to seek someone out to whom you can bring a little Chrismas Joy to all year round, because nothing cures the “Blues” like making someone else smile! 337376N0117
