Budding scientists from Copiague Middle School displayed their research skills during the school’s annual science fair on December 12th. This year, 30 projects completed by 40 seventh- and eighthgrade students were chosen for submission. Students enrolled in a science or science research class conducted experiments, either alone
or with a partner, and explained and displayed their results on a poster board. This year’s judges included Copiague School District Board of Education members, Copiague Chamber of Commerce members, SUNY Farmingdale faculty, Town of Babylon employees, Vanderbilt Museum representatives,

Research Goes Digital Third-graders have been using technology to improve their research skills at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District through seasonal-based projects. Throughout December, students worked on Chromebooks to learn more about the many holidays celebrated during the month. They
used databases available through the district website, including Britannica School, to do their research and find basic information such as the meaning of each holiday and associated customs and traditions. “This gets them familiar with using modern technology and advances their technological skills,” librarian Adrienne
Hartung said. Principal Kathleen Hyland said that the school has also been adding more non-fiction books to the library. These informational texts, along with online articles and videos, show students that there are numerous types of reliable sources that support research.

Student Shutterbugs Honored A pair of studentartists from Amityville Memorial High School had their work selected for the Advanced Visions 15: High School Artists of Excellence showcase at LIU Post. Juniors Brianna Desire and Jonathan Gambella are enrolled in Advanced Placement
art classes with teacher Jayne Grasso. Brianna’s digital photography piece, “Space,” and Jonathan’s digital photo, “Johnny Pump,” are on display in the S.A.L. Gallery, located in the B. Davis Schwartz Memorial Library at LIU Post. The students will be honored during a closing reception on January 9th.
“We are so proud to have two of our talented artists represent Amityville at this regional exhibit,” said Director of Fine Arts Dr. Fran Fernandez. “Congratulations to Brianna, Jonathan, their families, and their past and present art teachers on this fine accomplishment.”

CANDY, COOKIES AND CHEER - The National Junior Honor Society students from Copiague Middle School visited the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park and volunteered their time to bake goods for the families staying there on Dec. 14. The students baked five dozen sugar cookies and four dozen brownies. They also made gift bags for the children staying in the hospital. Senior Centers. She now participates in Big Time Glee (which has grown to 25+ attendees), the Crafting Connection and the PBS Campus Experience at Stony Brook University. Erin says she looks forward to participating in the PBS Community Foundation initiatives because she enjoys singing and performing in the community and she looks forward to being able to “hang out with her friends”. These activities have led to meaningful relationships, connections and other social and recreational opportunities in her community! Lastly, Erin volunteers her time to the Guide Dog Foundation and participates weekly in a cooking class, which helps her gain independent living skills. This supports her ultimate goal of living on her own one day. Erin shows us that her disability doesn’t stand in the way of her abilities. She is a hard-working, social, determined young lady and an inspiration to her family and friends! Positive Behavior Support Community Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, which was established in 2011 to help people with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities and other special needs. Their mission is to empower people with disabilities to make their own life choices and to succeed in the communities where they work, live and play. This organization helps these individuals access the support and services they need to become active and productive members of the community. They also encourage long-term planning to aspire towards meaningful life goals and they support efforts to establish social connections and friendships in the community. Independence Without Isolation is what they aim for as a foundation. A lovely young woman, Erin, with a developmental disability has had great success with this foundation. Erin, from Commack has the ability to make decisions and choose her own path through Self Direction. After graduating from High School in 2010, Erin went on to graduate from Eastern Suffolk Boces in 2013. Once she aged out at 21 years old, she and her family chose to Self-Direct her adult services. By doing so she has been successful in accomplishing many of her personal goals! Erin has been employed by her local Stop & Shop for over seven years and has even been honored as Employee of the Month! Additionally, she has built a strong network of social connections. Erin was one of the original members of Big Time Glee, a grassroots singing group that was started by the PBS Community Foundation with just a few young adults meeting weekly at the Leader’s home and singing regularly at community

It’s Time to Turn Our Backs on False Idols “You shall have no other Gods before me” - Exodus 20:2-3 Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, Kevin Spacey, Les Moonves... R. Kelly. Yes, I said it. We’re in quite a pickle, aren’t we? As a culture we have allowed mass media to convince us that those who become public figures in entertainment are idols to be worshipped. I know, I know... not you. You’re above it all, but let’s say for the sake of argument that most people aren’t. Fair? Following your favorite celebrities on social media, buying magazines when they grace the cover, tuning in to watch awards shows, hanging up posters on your bedroom wall as a teenager. Shall I go on? The past year or so has left society reeling with the realization that many famous people are deeply flawed and sometimes do some very bad things. But why the shock and awe, and devastation? They’re only human, many of them with severe problems. As a culture, we have a bigger problem. We’ve
allowed ourselves to worship false idols. Going back to the days of the O.J. Simpson trial that transfixed our nation, we couldn’t believe that this handsome, charismatic football superstar could actually be just a person who most likely committed a heinous crime. Did you know the construct of “celebrity” is really only about 100 years old? That’s a drop in the bucket. Prior to 1920, there were no radios in people’s homes. The first “talkie” film was around 1927, and televisions weren’t in homes until 1949. Up until the 20th century you could go to theatre, or read a book, magazine or newspaper. The media was a fraction of the size it is now, and people were community oriented. The typical family was focused on their home, their community, their church or synagogue and their neighbors. With the relatively recent constructs of record companies, movie studios, television studios and social media, executives needed to mythologize their stars in order to commoditize them. They needed to strategize ways
to make you love entertainers so you would purchase albums and movie tickets, and tune into television programs. It generates advertising and sales revenue. Don’t get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with enjoying entertainment. In fact, I believe that the arts are nourishing to the spirit and play an important role in our existence. But idol worship has led us down a murky path. In my journalistic work interviewing entertainers, I have tried to use that platform to peel away the celebrity veneer and show the person’s humanity to readers. Maybe I have succeeded at this or maybe I have failed. That is up to you to decide. You’re entitled to your opinion either way. With my son, I try to impart to him that although he can enjoy great music, theatre, film and television, the people he should be looking to as his role models are the people who touch his life on a daily basis; the people who care for him and his well being. The only being that we pray to and worship in our home is G-d. For that is as it should be.

Greeting the Grinch The Grinch may not be as revered by children as Santa Claus, but children at Northeast Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District still celebrated the character who first appeared in a Dr. Seuss book and has been the subject of several popular
Christmas movies. Northeast hosted its first Grinch pajama day on December 14th. Pre-K and kindergarten students marched through the halls in their pajamas and Grinch hats before settling into the gymnasium to watch part “The Grinch” movie. After singing a few
