K i n d e r g a r t e n registration for the Copiague Union Free School District will be held at the District Administrative Office, located on the side of Copiague Middle School on Great Neck Road, from February 3rd through 7th, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m., by appointment only. Children who have turned age 5 on or before December 1st, 2014 are eligible to attend school in September 2014. RESISTANT BACTERIA

QUESTION: Disease-producing bacteria are becoming resistant to antibiotics at an alarming rate. How can this be addressed? ANSWER: Since all bacteria in the same group are not equally susceptible to antibiotics, the resistant ones survive, reproduce, and still produce the same disease. If the antibiotic was taken properly, all the bacteria would have been destroyed including the more resistant strains. Once that strain survives, however, mutation makes the bacteria even more resistant. Here are the problems. (1) The prescribed dose was too low. (2) The dose was right but the duration was inadequate. (3) The wrong antibiotic was prescribed. If a patient stops taking an antibiotic just because he feels better, the bacteria remaining may mutate to a more resistant form. The disease then cannot be cured with the same antibiotic. We are losing one of our best weapons in the fight against disease just because we've become sloppy.

By: Ray Steinberg, Commack I woke up one morning, it was too quiet, and calm, Could this have been the aftermath of the dropping of the bomb. There came no chirping from the birds, And from the radio, there came no words. Through my body ran a strange sensation, I went outside to cure my temptation, But to my surprise, this was no imagination, This whole damn world was in a state of ruination. I stood there for hours, feeling so strange, Those buildings that I once knew, were now rearranged. The cold war had come, and the cold war had passed, And the morning of destruction, was here at last. I couldn’t feel love, I couldn’t feel pity, But I knew one thing, there was no more city. As I walked through the streets of trash, and rubble, In the far away distance, a mushroom shaped bubble, The final end to all that past trouble. And yesterday, the grass was so green, And the people, and places, and all was serene, And my younger brother would have turned sixteen. And yesterday, as I was up there flying, The big three, the UN, one was lying, Contemplating for today how the people would be dying. And now the radiation is coming towards me, and I’ll just wait, and I won’t resist, For when you know you’ll never again be kissed, what good is it for you to exist.

As many children across the country read Chris Van Allsberg’s novel The Polar Express in preparation for Christmas, third-grade students in Jeanie Mullins’ class at Copiague’s Great Neck Road Elementary School took it one step further. Before an audience of parents and fellow students, the third-graders performed a Reader’s Theater presentation of

the novel. Reader’s Theater productions are dramatic presentations of books through scripted form that help students focus on fluency development, motivate reluctant readers and strengthen comprehension. “I decided to work on a Reader’s Theater presentation with my class to build fluency and confidence in their reading and to put a well-loved text

into a play presentation,” said Mrs. Mullins. To prepare for their performances, the students spent two weeks learning their lines and creating scenery. As a special treat at the end of the performance, the students sang and signed along to Josh Groban’s “Believe,” a song featured in “The Polar Express” movie.

Kindergarten students in Maritza Winkler’s bilingual class at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in Copiague put their artistic talents to the test this December. After reading Celebrating Christmas, which focused

on holiday decorations, the students created edible holiday trees. Using ice cream cones, green frosting and a variety of candies as decorations, the kindergartners created their sweet treats to be brought home and shared.

Once their holiday trees were complete, the students wrote in their journals about the project, describing the items they used as ornaments and why they chose certain decorations.

This year’s challenge is FTC® BLOCK PARTY!SM, in which robots must place plastic blocks onto pendulum goals. Watch Out For The Post-Holiday “Blues”

Christmas and New Years are here and gone! All the hustle and bustle of the holidays have left many of us exhausted. We now begin to pack away all the decorations and begin planning for next year. Friends and relatives came together in the spirit of love and kindness and are returning to the grind of everyday normal life. Alas, the old cliché shall be spoken often in the next few weeks, “Why can’t the Christmas Spirit last all year long?” Something we should all be aware of is the “Post-Holidays’ Blues Syndrome.” We all suffer from this syndrome to some degree. Some of us just seem a little down and cannot get our act together. Some of us refuse to put away the decorations. We tend to blame the feeling on exhaustion, or being too busy, but it is a form of the BLUES. Some people however suffer very severely from this syndrome. Consider the person who just lost a loved one recently and suffered through another such season. Consider, also orphaned or troubled children who are lavished with gifts and attention for the holiday season and feel unloved and forgotten about for the rest of the year. Think a moment about those who are unable to get out of their houses and have visitors for 20 days in December, but do not see anyone for the rest of the year. Please don’t get me wrong, I think it is very important and wonderful the spirit of Christmas that touches so many people. But, I just want to point out a few reasons why some people suffer from severe Post-Holiday Blues. There are many other reasons why some people may suffer from this syndrome. And this syndrome may be the beginning of a more severe depression which may grow, especially during the bleak and dismal months of January and February. So, if you suffer from a mild case of Post-Holiday Blues, be secure in the knowledge that it is normal and that many people suffer along with you. But, also be aware that some people suffer from a very severe case of this syndrome and they should be watched. One of the best remedies to cure your “Blues” is to seek someone out to whom you can bring a little Christmas Joy to all year round. Have we started the intense diet/ exercise regimens, cleaned our homes from top to bottom, blown through our many “To Do” lists and set out on our quest for the meaning of life? No? Too soon? Still easing into it? It’s okay, take your time. There are still eleven and a half months remaining to whip everything into shape – your body, home, mind and beyond – so no worries. Those resolutions will be there for as long

as you choose to pursue them. And, contrary to popular belief, they don’t even need to be set on January 1st. Any day, any time, no expiration needed to accomplish your everchanging goals. Imagine that. January, for me, has always been somewhat of a time for hibernation – of settling in, catching up on some reading (that pile of Rolling Stone Magazines just keeps on growing), TV viewing (there was a reason I subscribed to Netflix all those months ago, wasn’t there?), movies (because we all know what quality cinema is released in the

dead of winter) and, when all else fails, curling up with a cup of hot cocoa and a batch of freshly baked (or burned, as the case may be) chocolate chip cookies on the couch. The To Do lists, they’ll eventually get done – either by crossing each task off one by one, or by erasing the less desirables, moving them to another, less urgent column… say, “To Do: Sometime Next Year” … Bundle up, hunker down and enjoy the winter while it’s here. It’s as good an excuse to vegetate as you’ll have for a while.

Collaborative (LIHC) is comprised of all Long Island’s hospitals, the Nassau and Suffolk County Health Departments, dozens of communitybased organizations, and academic institutions. These partners joined together in early 2013 to combine their expertise in a streamlined and cooperative effort to reach all Long Islanders and help them achieve improved health. Twenty-one (21*) high school students who worked with Stony Brook University faculty were named among the 300 semifinalists in the national 2014 Intel Science Talent Search competition. The mentors come from a range of departments and disciplines throughout Stony Brook, including: Anatomical Sciences, Applied Mathematics & Statistics, Biochemistry & Cell Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Geosciences, Medicine, Music, Neurobiology & Behavior, Pharmacological Sciences, Physics & Astronomy, and the School of Marine & Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS). The semifinalists will each receive awards of

$1,000; their schools will also receive $1,000 for each Intel semifinalist named. The Intel STS finalists will be announced on January 22 and will compete for additional awards in Washington, D.C. in March. A number of talented high school students participate annually in summer research programs at Stony Brook, including the Garcia Center: Polymers at Engineered Interfaces Research Scholar Program, and the Simons Summer Research Program. Some common side effects can easily be treated with over-the-counter products. According to a new survey by Wakefield Research, nearly one in three adults has completely stopped taking a medication because of side effects like dry mouth. Some 50 percent of Americans are on a prescription drug of some sort and more than 400 common medications can cause dry mouth, including overthe-counter cold remedies and antihistamines, antidepressants and commonly used medications for high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and high cholesterol. When you take more medication, you increase the risk of dry mouth. You have a 35 percent increased risk for dry mouth when you are on three or more medications.
