East Lake Students Rock Their Socks For Down Syndrome Awareness

Socks with colorful stripes, cartoon characters and pictures of food adorned the feet of students at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on March 22 to mark World Down Syndrome Day. Mismatched socks and custom designed Massapequa Rock Your Socks footwear were also

popular choices. The annual Rock Your Socks day, coordinated by the school and Massapequa SEPTA, is an annual event to raise awareness about Down Syndrome. World Down Syndrome Day is observed on the 21st day of the third month because it signifies the uniqueness of the triplication of the 21st chromosome which causes

Down Syndrome. With March 21 a Sunday, East Lake students and staff donned their funky socks at school the following day. Students also contributed to a Rock Your Socks quilt near the main lobby. They decorated paper quilt squares which were put together into a colorful display to show their support for the cause.

Chris once worked as a busboy at Sal’s Place and has always appreciated that employment opportunity. Recognizing that Sal’s Place and other local businesses were facing severe hardships brought on by the COVID-19 economic crisis, Chris began raising money to help keep the doors open. NEW WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE SWING - Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with Councilwoman Laura Maier and Councilman Steve Labriola to introduce a newly constructed wheelchair accessible swing at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa. The new swing is designed specifically for use by wheelchair bound individuals and is the first to be introduced in the park. This special wheelchair accessible swing was made possible by Massapequa residents Catherine Camisa, who proposed the installation of the swing, and Arthur Lih, who graciously donated $3,000 to make this dream a reality. Hope House Ministries (HHM) is a non-profit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. There are so many ways that this non-profit can truly help you get your life on a better track. Additionally, there are plenty of ways for people to get involved in helping others through volunteering. Over the past 40 years, thousands of people have donated their time and talent to help this organization reach those in need. So consider joining that network of support and be a part of the Hope House Ministries’ family. All of the services Hope House Ministries offers are FREE! Speaking of programs, later this month, J.P. Scarisbrick will be hosting our Virtual Wine Tasting. It appears that this will be a great program for our Chamber, and an exciting fundraiser to hold. I hope that all participants will have a great time at this event. Our June Meeting will be at Bacaro in Massapequa Park on Thursday, June 24th. This will be the Installation of our new Board and Executive Officers. At this meeting, we will also honor our volunteer firefighters in the Massapequa and North Massapequa Fire Departments for all that they do for our community. Please make every effort to attend this luncheon and show your appreciation for the men and women volunteer first responders that look out for us.

The last piece of my message highlights two of our current Board Members. Past President Phyllis Doria has been involved with the Chamber for a very long time and is always there to assist as needed. No job is too big or too small for Phyllis. Her dedication is second-to-none when it comes to the Chamber. I value her friendship and dedication to the Chamber, and look forward to her continued service. Stephen Parmiter has been on the Board for some three years, and is a valued and wise member of the Board. His advice on all money matters and programs is considered very important, and he brings a great dimension to the Board with his experience as a Wealth Manager with Morgan Stanley. I look for his advice on many matters, and when I call upon him to assist, he never says no. I look forward to all good things from Steve on our Board as the time goes by. That’s it for now!

With few restrictions and declining COVID-19 infection rates, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced the return of a variety of free weekday senior citizen activities offered by the Department of Community and Youth Services in community centers throughout the Town. These popular programs, which had been suspended throughout the last year due to the global

coronavirus pandemic, will return on Monday, May 17th and run through Friday, June 25th. Line dancing, exercise and tai chi classes are just some of the activities seniors can enjoy as part of this year’s program. “Senior citizen activities are returning this month and I invite our residents to participate in these free activities, where they can once again enjoy the company of others, make

new friends, and stay active,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Our senior activities are some of the most popular programs the Town offers, and I expect this year to be in higher demand than ever before as seniors can finally get out and be active as infection rates decline and vaccination rates climb!” The following programs will be offered: line dancing, tai chi, exercise, book club, and more opportunities for socialization. Activities will

run each day of the week, Monday through Friday. Seniors interested in any of these activities must reserve a spot in advance. Due to the pandemic and restrictions currently in place, class sizes are limited. Additionally, only one class permitted per week.
