students playing more advanced pieces, and growing to eventually include all performers playing pieces that even the youngest students could manage. The play-down featured a series of international tunes, from Loch Lomond, a traditional Scottish piece, to Bashana, a traditionally Israeli piece, to La Culebra, a Mexican Mariachi composition. In total, 68 musicians participated in this event. In the words of Carol Kushner, co-founder and co-director of the Music Institute, this Gala was “easily our best concert ever.” Graduating student James Toomey, attending Cornell University in the fall said “I’ve played in a lot of these concerts over the years… and I can say without question that they’re only getting better. The diversity of the repertoire…the passion of the students… the unwavering commitment to bettering our world through music displayed time and time again by the teachers and faculty made this concert what it turned out to be. This concert was [really] awesome.” For the past 22 years, the Music Institute of Long Island (MILI) has provided children and adults with musical instruction in a number of different instruments and styles from their location in the Community Reformed Church, 90 Plandome Road, Manhasset. On June 9th, the Landmark Building and its filled Jeanne Rimsky Theater what can only be described as a very special concert. The Music Institute of Long Island was performing its year end Gala, the culmination of a year of hard work for its students, ranging in age from 3 to 17 and for its teachers. The concert featured a variety of musical selections, from Twinkle Twinkle Little Star to Vivaldi’s Spring and Rachmaninov’s Prelude In G-Minor. The audience listened to the Musical Theater Group sing It’s A Hard-Knock Life and Castle In A Cloud from Les Miserables, heard 11 duos and several solos, trios, quartets and quintets, one of which was Mozart’s Piano Quartet K 478-Allegro, which featured two graduates and one of the directors of the school and was certainly a highlight of the concert. Other composers featured include Beethoven, Dvorak, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Tchaikovsky. Two alumni of the Institute returned to participate in this concert: Neil Miller, who is attending the Eastman School of Music, and Zoe Vinegar, attending Sarah Lawrence, both studying music. This year’s graduates will be headed to Fordham, Cornell, Delaware University, Georgetown and the University at Albany. The program closed with a group play-down in the Suzuki style, starting only with the more advanced

United Skates Roller Skating Rink in Seaford hosts thousands of birthday parties, special events and private events throughout the year, but the event that they have planned for September 2nd and September 3rd is one that is truly special. I like being busy. It makes time go by faster, and gives you a sense of productivity otherwise lost on being complacent. And this summer has certainly been a busy one. The only problem is when you pause just long enough to look at the calendar and realize – it’s almost over. Labor Day is just around the corner and, while fall is technically over three weeks away, we all know that everyone’s mental clocks reset the second the last “official” barbeque of the season is over. Back to school, back from vacation… quick, close the pool and pack up the lawn chairs! Stick a fork in summer – it’s done. On the one hand, I would love to squeeze in just one

Is it really time to pack up the white accessories, along with all the skirts and pastel-colored linens? But what if it’s still warm out?? Face it, transitioning isn’t easy. But on the other hand, there’s something exciting about fall too. It has its own perks and pleasures – the cool, crisp air, the upcoming Fall Festivals and Homecoming celebrations… football, postseason baseball… winery tours, pumpkin picking, Halloween… It’s definitely not all bad. Plus, it gives me an excuse to go “back to school” shopping for some new clothes! Every season arrives with

eager anticipation. But then, about halfway through, we’re already waiting for the next round. We’re impatient like that. And then we complain that time has flown by too quickly for us to fully appreciate each and every day. Can’t have it both ways. Like it or not, a new season – and a new mentality – is just around the corner. But what we choose to do with it, and how quickly we choose to react, is up to us. My calendar says we still have three and a half weeks left of summer, even more if the weather holds out. But if you’d rather dig out the boots and scarves from the back of the closet and get on line from now for Halloween candy, well that’s up to you. Just don’t complain that time is flying by too quickly.

Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment: • Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas. • Be careful what you clean with: Never use ammonia—based products-or cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange—on your granite countertops. Avoid

abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers. Don’t use cleaning products that contain acid such as bathroom, grout, or tub and tile cleaners. Specialty granite cleaners can be used, but they can be expensive. Granite countertops can really add spark to a kitchen or bathroom. Proper care will keep them looking beautiful.

Last Chance For Taxpayers Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes James J. Stefanich advises Town of Oyster Bay property owners who missed paying their 2012 General taxes by the August 10th deadline that they can still avoid additional interest and fees beyond the standard 2% late payment penalty. “Late payers should immediately contact the Receiver’s office at 516.624.6400 if they did not receive a second notification with a delinquent tax bill,” Receiver Stefanich stated. “Payments postmarked after August 31st cannot be accepted by the Town since the collection

warrant will have expired. Those payments must be sent to the Nassau County Treasurer at 1 West Street, Mineola, New York 11501.” Receiver Stefanich pointed out, “Failure to pay late taxes before the collection warrant expires will result in a delinquent tax lien proceeding with the possibility of the lien being sold the following February. Continued failure to pay all taxes levied against the property could result in your loss of the property.” In September, the Nassau County Treasurer will be mailing notices to all property owners with taxes in arrears. Receiver

Stefanich advises homeowners who fall under those circumstances to contact the Nassau County Treasurer at 516.571.2090 to determine the amount in arrears. They may also visit the Treasurer’s office at 1 West Street, Mineola. Receiver Stefanich noted, “I want to make sure that all Oyster Bay property taxpayers whose taxes are in arrears do not jeopardize their home ownership because they were unaware of the consequences of not responding to notices from the Town or County.”

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to protect your information. Here are a few tips from CTIA—the international w i r e l e s s telecommunications association: Take steps to prevent theft. Before a phone is lost or stolen, protect your information by using passcodes and applications. Passcodes—Use a passcode to make it harder for a thief to access your smartphone if it is lost or stolen. Apps—Use apps that can track or locate a lost or stolen smartphone. Some apps may also enable you to remotely wipe a device

or emit a loud alarm. If your device is lost or stolen, contact your wireless provider immediately to suspend your service. CTIA and its members always want America’s wireless users to be safe. Together with the Federal Communications Commission and major city police chiefs, CTIA and participating wireless companies have agreed to take steps to help protect consumers and their private information on smartphones. Paramount to preventing smartphone thefts is educating consumers about the tools and features that carriers, device manufacturers and app creators already offer. By using these passcodes and apps, consumers can protect themselves and their personal information

on their wireless devices. In addition, participating carriers have agreed to implement and deploy databases to prevent thieves from reactivating stolen smartphones in the U.S. and, when appropriate, internationally. By using a smartphone’s unique identifying number, wireless providers will help prevent smartphones that are reported by their customers as stolen from being activated and/or provided service on their own networks. Youth Orchestra Auditions

Honor A Veteran

Orchestras require that applicants have achieved a NYSSMA Level 4 or equivalent. The Concert Orchestras require a Level 5 and the Symphony and Principal Orchestras require a NYSSMA Level 6. The MYO Children’s Choir is open to singers from grades 4 through 8, and the MYO Long Island Youth Chorale is open to high school singers, who have performed the equivalent of a NYSSMA 5 or 6 solo. All Nassau orchestral ensembles and children’s choirs rehearse from September to June on Tuesday evenings at Herricks High School and Middle School. The Suffolk MYO Orchestras rehearse on Thursday evenings at Sequoya Middle School.

The LI Youth Chorale rehearses on Monday evenings at Herricks High School. Next season’s performances will be held in halls including Hofstra University, Adelphi University PAC, and Carnegie Hall. The MYO organization has over 600 young musicians in its ensembles, ranging in age from 8 to 18. End-Of-Summer Food Drive Thirteen year-old Hampton/NYC resident, Grant Andreas had an idea to collect the leftover food from the summer months to feed the struggling families of Long Island. Thanks to help of Strong’s Marine and Hall Lane Movin & Storage, Move For Hunger is turning Grant’s idea into a reality wit the first annual Hamptons End of Summer Food Drive. Over 320,000 people on Long Island, including 118,000 children, live on incomes that put them at risk for hunger. I am outraged! It is beyond comprehension that one of our Long Island animal shelters would kill 15 cats in one day, yet that is exactly what happened at the Smithtown Animal Shelter. Unfortunately, by the time I started receiving tips about the cats, it was too late - they were already dead. I called and spoke with shelter director George Beatty, who confirmed that the cats had been killed. I’m sorry to tell you he was less than polite on a personal level, and also mumbled something about some of the cats being there for two years or more and unadoptable, which makes this even more horrible. Imagine the sense of terror and betrayal these poor little beings felt as a needle was jabbed into them and they felt their lives draining away! I want you to know Readers, that I asked EVERY rescue organization I know of and NOT ONE was contacted by the Smithtown Shelter or George Beatty and asked to take even one cat.

As a matter of fact, here’s what some of them had to say: “Not a good shelter at all”...“I was never contacted by the Town of Smithtown Animal Shelter in regards to rescuing any cats at the shelter”...“It’s unfortunate that shelters here on LI still resort to killing rather than reaching out for help.” Readers, I have made it known to shelter director Beatty that I would post pictures and write stories about animals at the shelter, but he has never submitted one picture. I have featured blind ten year-old cats, crippled animals, deaf animals...and our readers have always come forward and adopted. There is absolutely no excuse for not reaching out in every way possible to save the lives of these cats. This is an example of the very worst and least progressive in animal sheltering. By the way, Readers, I also reached out to Smithtown Councilman Robert Creighton, who I was told was the town “animal shelter liaison.” I checked the Councilman’s bio and found nothing even remotely related to pets or animals in general, which would explain his less than sympathetic attitude during our phone call.
