The program will culminate with a symposium in late spring at which students will have the opportunity to showcase their projects for parents and faculty. Thanks to all who turned out.

The revised menu, available in all cafeterias throughout the district, offers a broader variety of healthful meal options that align with the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s first revamp of school nutrition standards in 15 years. 16 It’s not often that things work out perfectly, from beginning to end. But, if ever there was a time and a place – and a day – for an exception to that rule, I am happy to say that my 30th birthday came awfully close. I suppose, when you start with the love and thoughtfulness of two parents who would do anything to make their “little girl’s” day one fit for a princess – well then, how could you possibly go wrong? From morning til night, everything fell into place perfectly, making for a day full of magic and memories for me. Months ago, when asked what I wanted to do for the big day, my initial response
was, “Take off from work.” That being a given, my next wish was to spend that day off in my favorite place (so far), Manhattan. I’m one of those people for whom the city never gets old. No matter how many times you visit, there is always something new to see and a unique experience waiting around the next corner. This time, it was heading to Broadway to see Jersey Boys (finally!) and dining at Patsy’s, an old favorite of the one and only Frank Sinatra, among countless others. Phenomenal, on both fronts. That was the plan, anyway. What to do with that small window of time before dinner and the show though… Let me explain something here… EVERY time we have visited the city, for as far back as I can remember, I have wanted

More baby boomers are staying in the workforce longer. Between 2006 and 2016, the number of older people in the workforce is expected to soar, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Workers between the ages of 55 and 64 are expected to increase by 36.5 percent. The number of workers between 65 and 74 is expected to climb by a staggering 83.4 percent, and even the number of workers who are 75 and older is expected to grow by 84.3 percent. By 2016, the BLS says, workers age 65 and over are expected to make up 6.1 percent of the total labor force - a steep jump from their 3.6 percent share in 2006. This means that individuals need to take charge of their health including hearing health so they can maximize their chances for success on the job. Along with maintaining a healthy lifestyle, it’s important that boomers routinely get their hearing checked - and that they address any hearing loss so

Fact: The majority of Raccoons DO NOT CARRY RABIES, and if a raccoon contracts rabies it will soon die, just as a dog or a human would. It is not “a carrier” that lives out its lifetime carrying rabies and potentially infecting humans or pets. 2. Myth: Raccoons carry ticks and fleas Fact: That potential exists just as it does with cats and dogs. 3. Myth: Raccoons are strictly nocturnal, so if you see a raccoon in the daytime, it is rabid. Fact: Although in this part of the country raccoons are more active at night, they will come out during the day looking for food...especially the females looking for food to feed a litter of babies. 4. Myth: Raccoons are members of the rodent family. Fact: Raccoons are members of the Procyonidae family, which is part of the order Carnivora, to which the cat and dog families also belong. Among the raccoon’s closest relatives are the coatimundis, ringtails and red pandas. Readers, did you know that raccoons are sold as pets in some pet stores in Florida? And it is not unusual to find raccoons visiting picnic areas during the daytime hours in Florida, where picnickers delight in their adorable antics. I visited a friend in Florida who has had a pet raccoon for thirteen years. The raccoon litter box trained herself and participates in the household just as a beloved, affectionate dog would. As a matter of fact, my friend’s dog and raccoon are best buddies. When I picked the raccoon up, it was like snuggling with a live teddy bear! This raccoon was originally found injured outside on the back deck. Here at home in Nassau and Suffolk, each county has very different laws governing the treatment of raccoons from one county to the next. Ah, our uninformed, head-in-the-sand local politicians. But you already know how I feel about most of them. Please note that I am not suggesting Readers run out and invite the nearest raccoon home with them. Please visit a shelter and adopt. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Muscarella announced that the Town collected 135 pints of blood at its August 2nd drive, and thanked Town employees and local residents for their assistance in making the drive a success. “We have always been able to count on Town employees and residents to roll up their sleeves for our blood drives, but summer puts a strain on blood donations, so this kind of response is very heartening,” Councilman Muscarella said. “When broken down into component parts, each pint of blood could potentially help save three lives. That translates into 405 people who could benefit from these donations. And that’s what giving blood is all about…saving lives. “Blood donors are heroes,” said Councilman Muscarella. “They keep our area’s hospital shelves stocked with lifesaving blood. But to have a BREAST FEEDING WEEK - During the week of August 6th, Nassau University successful blood drive, it Medical Center’s perinatal staff celebrated World Breast Feeding Week. The celebration included an informational lobby display on the benefits of breast feeding for Mom and her baby. Pregnant women going past the table to go to our perinatal diagnostic and labor and delivery units stopped by. The future Moms were given information by our perinatal staff and anyone who stopped by the table (or whose relative stopped by) was entered into a free raffle for a beautiful basket filled with items for both Mom and baby.

On Saturday, September 29th, the Brain Aneurysm Center of the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Cushing Neuroscience Institute (CNI), along with the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF), will host Long Island’s 4th Annual Brain Aneurysm Awareness Walk at Jones Beach State Park to promote awareness and education. Proceeds raised from the walk will go to CNI’s Brain Aneurysm Center and the Brain Aneurysm
Foundation to support essential research that may directly benefit those affected and help to reduce the incidence of ruptured aneurysms. Hundreds of survivors, family members, clinicians and other supporters are expected to attend this fun-filled event. Participants can choose to do a two-mile walk or a four-mile fun run, all for a good cause. WALK-FM 97.5 will provide music, entertainment and

The halls were dark and quiet, but inside Massapequa High School’s cafeteria last week, there were bright lights and bright minds as 15 students with their parents learned about what was expected of them as participants in the district’s rigorous science research program. “You are our top guns, the best of the best,” began Dr. Thomas Fasano, assistant to the superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction. “You will represent your school, grade and community in the most respectable contests in the science field. We commend you and support you to pursue your dreams and make us proud.” Going around the room, students in grades 9-11 expressed their research interests and explained
their prior research projects, from “how people react to different types of video games” to “how different substances can affect the growth of bacteria.” Twelfth-grade students entering the highest level of the program were not in attendance, and for good reason. They were working on their research with mentors at local universities, a critical component for submission to the Intel competition. “This year, the goal is to send students to as many competitions as possible so they gain experience and build confidence to compete at the highest levels,” said Science Research teacher Starlyn O’Shea. She, along with colleagues August Eberling and Christine Reynolds, took the students on a step-by-step
presentation of the Research 1, 2, 3 and Intel level classes and the many competitions students will be participating in. “Another emphasis will be on journal reading and practicing presentation skills with each other,” she said. Two additional goals of the program are to foster more collaboration between seniors and underclassman as a way to inspire and support younger students, and to establish greater connections with professors and mentors at colleges and universities as well as hospitals and other research facilities to help students prepare for high level competitions. Last year was the first time in eight years that Massapequa students qualified for the Intel competition, and more are expected to qualify this
year. Lisa Caputo, curriculum associate for science, urged students to take advantage of all the resources the district has to offer and then led them
on a tour of the science research lab where equipment and projects by last year’s Intel participants were on display. The program will
culminate with a symposium in late spring at which students will have the opportunity to showcase their projects for parents and faculty.
