slip Town Councilman Anthony Senft recently presented an award on behalf of the Islip Town Board to a local hero. Angelo V. Cotugno was a tanker for two years in the Korean War, where he lost his hearing. After returning home, he served for over 30 years in the Deer Park School District, before retiring in 1992. He is also a long-time member of the Eddie Peisker VFW Post 588. Congratulations to Mr. Cotugno on this great honor. You should be very proud.

Forever 29 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s here. The last day of my 20’s. The beginning of the next stage of life, that magical, as yet unknown frontier known as my 30’s. What will this next decade bring? Normally, a birthday is just another year. A flip of the daily calendar. No real difference. But this year, it seems different. This year, I find myself using my milestone as a benchmark, as an evaluation of where my life has taken me thus far and where I want to take it from this point forward. Is it what I expected? No, not at all. Is that a bad thing? Nope, not necessarily. Since when did anything go according to plan?

Trust me, we all need one, if for no other reason than to reinvigorate ourselves, to find that motivation to make all those longput-off changes…and to find that elusive sense of fulfillment and happiness we are all continually in search of. Sure, a clean slate can start on any day, at any point in time that we see fit. But there is just something about a brand new birthday year that just goes with a brand new you, isn’t there? Of course, this doesn’t mean I am necessarily overjoyed to turn 30, mind you. There is

still something… icky about that number for me, something less-than-appealing about rolling over that hill, so to speak. Just like there are those who would rather remain teenagers forever, or 21, or 49, or whatever the case may be – I’m content to be “Forever 29” for the foreseeable future – at least at heart. So here’s to the last (official) day of being 20-something. And here’s to tomorrow, and the next day, and every day after that. May they each bring new and exciting milestones much bigger than a mere number on a birthday cake.

The half-day seminar, known as “Super Saturday,” introduces the Junior League and its many local community projects to new members. The event will take place at JLLI headquarters located at 1395 Old Northern Blvd., Roslyn, NY 11576. Registration is required. WOUNDED WARRIOR RIDE - Members of the community recently joined together to cheer on the brave men and women who participated in the Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride through Babylon on July 20th. The event raised money and awareness for members of our military who have been wounded in combat. The Wounded Warrior Project’s Soldier Ride is a rehabilitative cycling program for injured servicemen and women, giving them the opportunity to reinvigorate their bodies and showing them how much life still has to offer.

Girl Scouting organization. Diana’s project, Beauty Within Mega Makeover was inspired by her late grandmother, lovingly known as “GaGa.” She was a volunteer with a huge heart. She felt the inside was more important than the outside but always said if you look good on the outside, you feel good on the inside. That is what sparked Diana’s project idea. Diana made a few visits to the nursing home, East Neck Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She interviewed residents learning historical stories, personal memories. Diana published and distributed a newsletter for the nursing home residents so they can learn more about each other. With the help of sister girl scout volunteers, the day consisted of makeup trials, polishing nails and decorating frames with inspiring quotations. The

frames had a mirror to represent how one will be viewed... beautiful inside and out. Diana received donations of supplies, handmade cards and toiletries from Service Unit 7. Diana made goodie bags for each resident. In addition to the activities, Diana invited a guest speaker, Stephanie Mattera who spoke about what it truly means to be beautiful. Ms. Mattera is the community outreach and events manager of charity by design for the International Accessories House of Alex and Ani. She is known for holding the title of Glamour’s New York City Glambassador, in addition to being Miss New York International 2009. Diana’s hope was to bring the nursing home together and create friendships along with bright, uplifting beautiful attitudes.

Art Show Winners The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts’ 23rd Annual Judged Art Show was held at Old Town Hall in Babylon Village on June 15th and 16th. It was an exciting show, and the evening reception on June 15th was well attended by artists and friends. People’s Alliance Federal Credit Union, Leviton Manufacturing Company and GE Aviation have provided support and volunteer services to PalO-Mine Equestrian, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing therapy and recreation to children and adults with disabilities. Paella perfect for last summer soiree When autumn is on the horizon and temperatures are about to take a turn for the colder, many families prefer to enjoy one last fiesta outdoors before calling it quits on the outdoor entertaining season. The following recipe for "Vegetable Paella" from Deb Roussou's "350 Best Vegan Recipes" (Robert Rose) makes a great dinner on the deck with family and friends.

Vegetable Paella

As I’ve said many times, the first step to having a No Kill Shelter is to get rid of the shelter directors who believe that adoptable animals have to be killed to control the shelter population. I’m currently gathering data on those Long Island Shelters with the highest rate of killing, and I’ll report my findings to you in an upcoming column. Meanwhile, please remember that no shelter employee has the right to come to your home and demand that you turn your pet over to them without a court order, even if your dog has bitten someone. They must have a court order issued by a judge. Just because they are wearing a uniform and hold the title of animal control officer, they are NOT law officers.
