As the lengthening days and warmer weather begin, more and more people will be dusting off their tools and reaching for their gardening gloves. While gardening can be a great way to enjoy time outdoors, be more physically active, reduce stress and grow your own nutritious fruits and vegetables, it can also pose health and safety risks for beginner and expert gardeners alike. In fact in 2010, more than 41,000 people were injured while gardening or using gardening equipment, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. To help keep you safe and healthy so that you can enjoy the full bounty and beauty of your garden, here are a few tips from your physical therapist. Prepare Yourself: You wouldn’t run a marathon without adequate training or the proper equipment, yet many people rush into their gardens after a long winter unprepared, only to return hours later aching and exhausted. As with any

“Enjoying Gardening” physical activity, a good warm up is essential for preparing your body for the task ahead. Start gradually by walking briskly around your garden. This will allow you to assess what needs to be done while helping raise your pulse and body temperature.
other tasks close to the ground, kneel on a soft cushion. Use tools with long handles to avoid too much bending when hoeing, digging, raking or shoveling. Don’t stay too long in one position. Take a break every 15 to 30 minutes to stretch your arms, shoulders and back.
Get your muscles and joints ready to work by doing some gentle dynamic stretching. Roll your shoulders and arms backwards, gently rotate your trunk and pelvis, and squat down to the ground while keeping your back straight. Repeat these motions for a few minutes before you start digging holes and pulling weeds.
Never lift anything by simply bending over. Instead, let your leg muscles do most of the work. Grip the object while squatting, and then lift by raising your entire body, keeping your weight over your legs. Only rake and dig for brief periods of time. Take frequent rest breaks and mix up your gardening chores so that you do not overtire one part of your body.
Protect Your Back: The gripping, bending, walking, lifting, stretching and standing associated with simple gardening tasks can strain the body in painful ways, especially the lower back. Instead of bending over to pull weeds, plant or do

The system uses a mild solution retained in a custom-fitted appliance that is worn over your teeth while you sleep. Results are usually seen after the first night. However, maximum results generally occur when the process is continued for 10 to 14 nights. Former methods of tooth bleaching had to be performed in the dental office and used caustic solutions and intense heat. The most common causes of tooth discoloration include aging, staining substances (coffee, tea, colas, tobacco), trauma, tetracycline, nerve degeneration, and old restorations. How long do the results last? The teeth will always be lighter than they were. However, some patients may need periodic re-bleaching for one or two nights every four to six to twelve months.

Once upon a time, Richard H. Johnston became a funeral director, married Irene Happ, and moved to the village of Lindenhurst from New York City. Then came World War II, and he was drafted into the U.S. Navy where he worked as a funeral director at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Morgue. In 1958, Richard H. and Irene Johnston opened the funeral home. They moved above the funeral home with their three children to be readily available to families at any hour. About ten years later, Richard H. and Irene retired to Florida, and their son, Richard, who was now home from service in the U.S. Air Force in Germany during the Vietnam War, took over the business. A local resident since his birth in 1943, Richard, a 1960 graduate of Lindenhurst High School, and further graduate of Simmons School of Mortuary Science, has continued to maintain his parents’ tradition of living 5 blocks from the funeral home to be readily available to families within a moments notice.

The Amityville Farmers’ Market is located at the 9/11 Memorial parking lot on Broadway, next to Cameta Camera. Held on Friday afternoons, it has recently extended its hours, opening at 1 p.m. and closing at 6:30 p.m. Donations will be accepted until 5:30 p.m. A handmade basket with items from the market will also be raffled that day. Proceeds from the raffle will be part of the Bay Village Civic Association’s scholarship fund. Scholarships are awarded annually to Amityville High School students. This year, Kelly Siry and Meghan Brooks were the worthy recipients for their community service and academic achievement. The Market features about twenty vendors, including several academic farms. Many quality bakers are also present. Live music is often featured. Future events at the Market include a cooking demonstration by Steve Seabury. His cookbook, Mosh Potatoes, published by Simon & Schuster, is a collection of recipes from many rock bands. Mr. Seabury uses his “High River Sauces” to make interesting meals. He is scheduled to perform his demonstration on Friday,
