Snapper Derby Tournament The Annual Snapper Derby Fishing Tournament, co-sponsored by Captree Bait, Tackle & Fuel. This event will be held on Saturday, August 25th, and Sunday, August 26th, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The purpose of this event is to encourage children to fish; however, all ages are welcome. Individuals who haven’t surfed in years due to spinal cord injuries, that left them paralyzed, will be able to get on to surfboards at Long Beach thanks to an organization called Wheels2Water. Dozens of volunteers are needed to help paralyzed surfers out of their wheelchairs and on to specially designed surfboards. The Wheels2Water event takes place starting at 10 a.m. on Sunday,

Islip Terrace’s Danielle Kaczynski, who graduated from Connetquot Elementary this June and will attend sixth grade at East Islip Middle School in

September, won the title of 2012 Miss Pre-Teen Photogenic New York. Aided by numerous local businesses that sponsored her, Danielle’s victory in the age 10-12 division took place at a May 19th pageant competition. She won an expense-paid trip to Orlando, Fla. where she will represent New York at the national 2012 Miss Pre-Teen competition later this year. Before graduation, Danielle served as vice president of Connetquot’s student council. She sang

Miss Photogenic at Radio City Music Hall with the Connetquot Chords chorus group last December, and as a soloist at the dedication of the new Connetquot playground on June 6th. She also performed in the school’s winter and spring concerts, both in the chorus and as a flutist and drummer in the advanced band. She has participated in East Islip Competition Cheerleading (EICC) since first grade and counts gymnastics, modeling and acting as her other main activities.

Dear Readers, Sparkles was all awiggle with anticipation. Her toys were packed and she was freshly groomed, her little heart pounded with love and joy...she was going home. The wonderful people at Massapequa Pet’s Vet who saved her life when her owner decided he’d rather go on vacation than pay for Sparkle’s surgery had told her about the wonderful loving couple who would come for her. The pain from her injuries and the heartbreak of being abandoned by the person 2. she loved was behind her now. Sparkles was more than willing to devote her whole being to her new owners and to allow her broken heart to heal. She sighed as she circled her cage, and then she lay down on her bed with her head on her paws...waiting. Readers, I was told that the reason the wonderful couple did not come for Sparkles was because they were heartbroken. Their beloved Rottweiller had died, and the gentleman could not bring himself to open his heart to another dog. Everyone deals with loss differently. My poor heart has been broken so many times with the loss of a beloved pet. I understand the pain. For me, the only way I can cope is to open my heart and welcome another pet to help me heal. Without that special healing love, I would find the pain of loss very difficult to deal with. I would like to ask that couple to reconsider, to honor the memory of their dearly loved dog by allowing Sparkles to love them and help them heal. But meanwhile, Sparkles is still waiting. Stoll (18871988), a trustee and benefactor of the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum, was a noted explorer, naturalist and big-game hunter who created and financed the museum's strikingly detailed Stoll Wing animal-habitat dioramas featuring wild game he had brought back from around the world - which the museum opened to

Stephanie Gress, the museum’s director of curatorial services, said “It’s wonderful that Mrs. Speer and her family have reconnected with the Vanderbilt Museum and their grandfather’s legacy. The Stoll Wing and the Vanderbilt Planetarium opened within months of each other. The renovated Planetarium will reopen this fall. So it seems like fate that their generous gift, geared toward the future of Mr. Stoll’s animal dioramas, would arrive now.” Lance Reinheimer, interim executive director, said, “The Speer family's spectacular gift will enable us to restore the Stoll Wing and its amazing specimens, key elements of our education programs. Although it is unclear whether Stoll and Vanderbilt ever met, their interests and expeditions

had remarkable parallels. They also shared a love of the natural world and a deep commitment to public education.” The eight Stoll Wing dioramas display 15 animals - brought home by Stoll and his wife, Merle, between 1922 and 1969 - plus 30 mounted heads. The animals are from Africa, Alaska, the American West, the Arctic, British Honduras (now Belize), Canada, India and Nova Scotia. Specimens range from a blue wildebeeste, polar bear, walrus and Cape buffalo, to a kudu, ostrich, jaguar, Bengal tiger and leopard. Stoll hired Dr. James L. Clark, a renowned taxidermist for the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), to supervise the creation of the Stoll Wing dioramas. Clark chose taxidermists and background artists from

Night At The Movies By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I don’t get it. Why is it that, more and more, parents insist on taking their young children to movies that they have no business seeing at hours of the night when they would be better served settling in for a bedtime story? Nearly every movie that I’ve seen in the last few months has featured the background noise of a screaming, crying young child, pretty much from the opening credits onward. Seriously folks? My last movie outing had to be the best (or worst, if we’re being literal) by far. No sooner had we settled in to watch the previews when a little girl – who couldn’t have been more than three or four years old mind you – began rocking back and forth in her chair, kicking the seat in front of her (you guessed it… mine) and whining about how she wanted to get ice cream, RIGHT NOW. This little performance continued for the next three hours. Seriously. At one point, I was startled by what I thought was something crawling on me. But no, it was the tiny hand of the child, attempting

to catapult herself over the seat next to me into my row. This was shortly followed by the pitter-patter of little feet running back and forth down the aisles, all the while singing at the top of her lungs. Now, don’t get me wrong. Children are adorable and cute and all that – just not at a 10:30 movie screening of a film that clearly only the parental units were interested in seeing. And the “adults” who I assume were with her for supervision seemed unfazed by it all, simply staring straight ahead at the screen, paying no mind to the dozens of dirty looks from those in the surrounding seats. The only admonishment was the occasional, “Now if you want ice cream, you better be good honey!” Good? Honey?! It was at this point that I looked around for a hidden camera, convinced I must have been a part of the latest episode of “What Would You Do?” or some other prank show. Because, truly, there was no way that two people could be that inconsiderate of an entire movie theater full of people, right? Apparently wrong. At a certain point, my exasper-

Honored For Service

In a July 26th meeting of the Board of Directors, Suffolk County Association of Municipal Employees President Daniel P. Farrell honored Suffolk County security guard James Sodergren for his recent heroism. Sodergren, accompanied by his family, was presented with a proclamation, praised by Farrell and received a standing ovation. Earlier in the week, Sodergren found and assisted a man who had attempted suicide at the South West Department of Social Services Center in Deer Park. Sodergren, who has been a Suffolk County security guard for more than 24 years, is one of the 30-plus security guards County Executive Steve Bellone is trying to replace with outside contractors. “We are proud to have someone of Jim Sodergren’s experience and skill among our ranks,” said President Farrell. “He responded like he was trained to do and his quick, knowledgeable actions helped save a man’s life.” “We’ve argued from the start that public safety would be jeopardized by replacing our well-trained and seasoned security guards with low-bid contractors, and here’s your proof,” Farrell said. “They will never fill Jim’s post with anyone with his

credentials, experience, training, and commitment to serving and protecting the people of Suffolk County.” “I was notified that someone was bleeding in the men’s room and when I went in, I saw blood all over the floor,” Sodergren said. “I radioed another guard to call 911 and pried open the stall. It looked like he was trying to take

his own life, but I wasn’t going to let that happen,” said the security guard, who is also a 36-year fireman and commissioner with the Central Islip Fire Department. Sodergren was also named the first AME "Member of the Month," a new feature started by union leadership.

Sparkles was all awiggle with anticipation. Her toys were packed and she was freshly groomed, her little heart pounded with love and joy...she was going home. The wonderful people at Massapequa Pet’s Vet who saved her life when her owner decided he’d rather go on vacation than pay for Sparkle’s surgery had told her about the wonderful loving couple who would come for her. The pain from her injuries and the heartbreak of being abandoned by the person 2. she loved was behind her now. Sparkles was more than willing to devote her whole being to her new owners and to allow her broken heart to heal. Little Shelter: As the hours went by, Sparkles would 631.368.8770 blink and snuff the air every time she heard DEMI footsteps. “Was it them? Would she be going young female Calico, home now?” Sparkles found it hard to wait. Domestic Short Hair At the end of the day, Sparkles finally heard FLO the footsteps coming to her cage - this was female Maltese it, her new people had arrived to take her home. But instead it was her old Massapequa Pet’s Vet friends. “We’re sorry, Sparkles girl, they’re not coming... They changed their minds.” They carefully unpacked her toys and gave her a hug; then they shut the lights and Sparkles was alone in the dark. She sighed as she circled her cage, and then she lay down on her bed with her head on her paws...waiting. Readers, I was told that the reason the wonderful couple did not come for Sparkles was because they were heartbroken. Their beloved Rottweiller had died, and the gentleman could not bring himself to open his heart to another dog. Everyone deals with loss differently. My poor heart has been broken so many times with the loss of a beloved pet. I understand the pain. For me, the only way I can cope is to open my heart and welcome another pet to help me heal. Without that special healing love, I would find the pain of loss very difficult to deal with. I would like to ask that couple to reconsider, to honor the memory of their dearly loved dog by allowing Sparkles to love them and help them heal. But meanwhile, Sparkles is still waiting. I’m aching to write a happy ending to this story. Every living creature deserves to give love and be loved in return, don’t you agree?
