Jimothy Fever Spreads Across U.S.

When Kiana Hall spotted something waddling across a Seattle field last month, she thought she was looking at "an orb with really long legs." Then it turned around, she saw the mask, and she realized it was a raccoon. The short clip she posted -- asking only what on earth she was looking at -- has since drawn more than 18 million views on TikTok alone, turning a neighborhood critter into a global star named Jimothy. Jimothy's compact, ball-like shape comes from a rare congenital spine condition, possibly short spine syndrome, a disorder that also turns up in dogs. But the surprising part, according to the veterinarians watching the clips, is how well he is doing. Marcie Logsdon of Washington State University's veterinary hospital said he was likely born just this year, and that surviving this long tells her he is managing life in the wild just fine. He had help. Another neighbor who had watched Jimothy since he was a baby said the little raccoon was clumsy and often unsteady, but his mother and siblings are endlessly patient -- keeping him from falling, and sometimes simply carrying him. The internet, meanwhile, has adopted him completely. There are sighting trackers, tattoos, and a slogan -- "hot Jimothy summer." A city councilmember is preparing a proclamation declaring "Jimothy Summer."

The Sub that Attacked New York in 1776 The first submarine attack in history did not involve steel, engines, or torpedoes. It involved a hand-cranked wooden barrel, a single exhausted volunteer, and a glowing piece of cork. On the night of September 6, 1776, according to the American Battlefield Trust, a Connecticut inventor named David Bushnell sent his strange craft into New York Harbor. Called the Turtle for its egg-like shape, the one-man submersible was built of oak, sealed with tar, and propelled by hand and foot cranks that turned small propellers. It submerged by letting water in and surfaced by pumping it back out. To read his instruments in the dark, the pilot relied on a piece of naturally glowing bioluminescent cork. The plan was audacious. Sergeant Ezra Lee would pilot the Turtle beneath HMS Eagle, the flagship of the British fleet blockading the harbor, and screw an explosive charge into its hull. According to History.com, Lee spent two hours pedaling out to the ship, then tried to bore into its bottom -- only to strike a band of iron he could not get through. As dawn approached, he gave up and released the charge nearby, which exploded harmlessly in the water. The mission failed, and every later attempt failed too. That fall the British sank the sloop boat carrying the Turtle, and the little submarine vanished from history. But George Washington, who had helped fund it, judged the attempt "an effort of genius." He was right about that much: the age of undersea warfare had begun in a barrel off the tip of Manhattan.

Jim Morrison said people are strange. But I will add that people can be cruel. An example would be the estimated 10,000 puppy mills operating in the U.S. This issue is personal to me as my most recent rescue, Jagger, was saved from a puppy mill in Missouri (the state with the most puppy mills). The puppies are there for one purpose only. To make more puppies. Some of these operations contain more than 1,000 breeding dogs at a time. But make no mistake, this horrific process is not about providing loving homes. It is about greed and cruelty. These poor breeding dogs are given no personal space, receive no personal attention or veterinary care, and endure their short lives in dark, dingy metal cages stacked four cages high in germ-infested warehouses. And when they become too sick to reproduce, they are quickly discarded. It’s an inhumane practice. But there are steps we can take to combat this horrendous practice. While eliminating all puppy mills instantly is not likely, we can make a significant impact by sharing the evils about puppy mills on social media and with your family and friends. And we can choose to be a part of the solution by choosing to adopt instead of buying from a breeder. As for my Jagger, she is one of the lucky ones that will forever have a loving home.

Companies Putting Meter on AI Uber gave a new artificial intelligence coding tool to about 5,000 engineers last December. The engineers loved it. But by April, the company had spent its entire 2026 AI budget, according to the Financial Times. This is a story about an expense nobody knew how to estimate. The culprit has a name: agents. A chatbot answers a question and waits for the next one. But an agent takes an assignment and goes off to do it -- reading files, writing code, and starting over when it fails. AI is sold by the token, roughly three-quarters of a word, counted going in and coming out. Each step an agent takes drags along everything that came before it. Researchers at the Stanford Digital Economy Lab found that agent tasks can burn a thousand times the tokens of ordinary chat, with most of the cost in what the machine reads. And the agents are poor judges of their own appetite. So, companies started metering. Uber now caps employees at $1,500 a month per tool. Walmart limits tokens on its in-house coding assistant. Microsoft moved thousands of engineers off a tool this summer after individual bills reached $2,000 a month. A year ago, some firms kept leaderboards celebrating heavy AI use. The word for it was tokenmaxxing. This year's word is tokenminimizing. Not everyone is pulling back. Databricks still gives its engineers an unlimited budget. And most businesses never felt any of it. The median American company spends $11.38 per employee per month on AI, according to the Ramp AI Index. The top 1 percent spend about $7,500.

The colorful tiger painted on a patient's arm isn't a temporary tattoo -- it's a working medical sensor. Engineers at Penn State University have developed a conductive ink that can be brushed directly onto skin to track the heart, muscles, and brain, then tinted with ordinary food dye into any design a wearer wants, from a cartoon shark to Superman. The ink behaves almost like body paint, according to coauthor Larry Cheng. It goes on nearly transparent, dries in under 10 minutes -- faster with a hair dryer -- and, unlike stick-on electrodes, leaves no air gap between the sensor and the skin. That gap is a common culprit behind fuzzy readings, according to PhD student Wanqing Zhang, especially on hairy or sweaty skin. The results, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, are far more than cosmetic. A painted electrode tracked one subject's heart activity across 12 hours of daily life and held its accuracy during exercise. In another test, signals read from a forearm let a person operate a robotic hand without touching it. The team, which has filed a provisional patent, hopes future versions will read biomarkers such as glucose or cortisol. One near-term audience: pediatricians, since a superhero on the arm makes a doctor visit far less frightening for a nervous child.

My Visit to the City of Love By Zoe Stoler / Sophomore at University of Central Florida

Paris had always been a place I wanted to visit after seeing it so often in movies, photos and online. Actually, getting to experience it in person was even better than I expected. From seeing the Eiffel Tower lit up at night to visiting famous landmarks during the day, there was always something new to see. One of my favorite parts of the trip was seeing the Eiffel Tower at night. It is impressive during the day, but seeing it completely lit up after sunset was definitely one of the highlights of Paris. Some of my favorite photos of the trip came from that night. We stood along the river with the Eiffel Tower behind us, took pictures, and spent time enjoying the view. It was definitely one of those moments that made me realize, I'm actually in Paris! Of course, the Eiffel Tower was only one part of the trip. Paris has so many famous landmarks and interesting places that there was always something to do. One area I especially enjoyed exploring was Montmartre. The cobblestone streets, smaller buildings, cafés, and colorful storefronts gave this part of Paris its own personality. We stopped by La Maison Rose, a small pink restaurant with green shutters that made for some of my favorite pictures from the trip. While exploring Montmartre, I also had my portrait drawn by a street artist. I sat down while he sketched me, and it was really interesting getting to watch the portrait slowly come together. It was such a fun and different experience, and I got to leave with something personal to remember Paris by. One night, we visited Caveau de la Huchette, an underground jazz club tucked beneath the streets of Paris. Walking downstairs into the club felt completely different from the busy streets above. The space was small and lively, with live jazz music and people dancing. I was especially excited to visit because the club helped inspire the jazz-club atmosphere in La La Land, one of the details that made the experience even more memorable for me. I left Paris with hundreds of photos, plenty of memories, and a much better understanding of why so many people love this unique city.

September is Hurricane Preparedness Month A hurricane or tropical storm can leave a house dark for days. But a little planning now can turn a dangerous ordeal into a manageable inconvenience. Start with food and water. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, an unopened refrigerator keeps food safe for about 4-5 hours, and a full freezer holds its temperature for roughly 48 hours, or 24 if it is half full. Keep the doors shut, and when in doubt, throw it out. Store at least one gallon of water per person per day. Light the house with flashlights, not candles, which are a leading cause of house fires during outages. Keep phones charged and add a power bank and a battery-powered radio so you can reach family and follow the news. The deadliest mistake is bringing a generator too close. According to Ready.gov, generators, camp stoves, and grills must run outdoors only, at least 20 feet from any window, door, or vent -- never in a garage, even with the door open. Their exhaust carries carbon monoxide, an invisible gas that kills hundreds of Americans a year. Plan ahead for anyone who depends on electricity. Have a backup for power-dependent medical devices, know that refrigerated medicines such as insulin should be replaced if an outage runs long, and check on older neighbors, who are the most vulnerable when the air conditioning stops. And always keep some cash on hand, too. When the power is out, card readers and ATMs go dark along with the lights.
