Goodbye January, hello February! A few February fun facts: it’s the shortest month of the year with 28 days (even in leap years, when it has 29 days); it’s the coldest month of the year in the Northern Hemisphere; and thanks to that extra ‘r,’ February is consistently one of the most commonly misspelled words in the English language.

You’ve probably seen them mounted on walls in offices, schools, and public buildings, but do you really know what they’re for? They’re called automated external defibrillators, or AEDs -- sophisticated medical devices that just about anyone can use to provide lifesaving assistance to people in cardiac arrest.
According to the American Red Cross, sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in the U.S., with more than 350,000 cases each year. Defibrillation is the only way to restore regular heart rhythm, and readily accessible AED devices allow laypersons to intervene and buy time until first responders arrive. And during cardiac arrest, that extra time matters -- each minute without defibrillation reduces the odds of survival by about 10 percent.
According to AED manufacturer Avive, AEDs consist of adhesive electrode pads that read the patient’s heart rhythm and deliver controlled electric shocks if necessary, a processor to analyze heart rhythm data and determine if and when electric shocks are appropriate. There are several FDA-approved models on the market, and all of them provide voice and visual instructions to guide users through the process.
All fifty states require AEDs in certain public gathering places, though the specific regulations vary by jurisdiction. But even in spaces where AEDs are not required -- which often includes churches, private clubs, businesses, and residential areas -- they can still be installed and used to provide lifesaving assistance.
On February 2, Punxsutawney Phil, Pennsylvania's groundhog extraordinaire, will again stick his head out of his den. The nation awaits his verdict. Groundhog Day is said to have its origins in ancient weather lore where the prognosticator was often a badger or a sacred bear. In the U.S., its origin is said to come from a Pennsylvania German custom.
If Phil, peeking from his burrow, fails to see his shadow, winter will soon be over. If the sun happens to be shining and Phil sees his shadow, winter will continue for six more weeks. The first trek to meet with Phil began in 1887. And he has been emerging from his burrow in Pennsylvania ever since, always eager to greet his enthusiastic public.
Phil’s winter weather predictions aren’t exactly accurate, with a 37% record of being correct. Phil has a formal Inner Circle of men in fancy tuxedos and top hats that provide for his care during the year, much like a court provides for its king. The Inner Circle also serves as a backup weather predictor in case weather conditions are unclear. They can declare his shadow sightings either way.
The city of Punxsutawney offers several days of celebration for those who gather from around the world to hear Phil's proclamation. The city offers food, music, carriage rides, magicians, crafts and games.

Thirty five years ago, on February 24, 1991, the U.S. launched its famous ground assault, “Operation Desert Storm.” The Gulf War began after President Saddam Hussein of Iraq ordered the invasion of neighboring Kuwait in August 1990. Arab powers protested and called on the U.S. to intervene after Hussein defied international demands to withdraw.
Hussein had begun amassing troops on Kuwait’s border throughout 1990. He insisted Kuwait and Saudi Arabia cancel out $30 billion of Iraq’s foreign debt to them and accused them of siphoning Iraqi oil. Once Kuwait was invaded, Hussain had assumed his fellow Arab states would not seek outside help. But this proved to be a major miscalculation, as the Arab League turned to the U.S. for military support.
President George H.W. Bush immediately condemned the invasion, as did many other nations. On November 29, 1990, the U.N. Security Council authorized “all necessary means” of force against Iraq if it did not immediately withdraw from Kuwait. In turn, Hussein declared a jihad against the international coalition.
Led by General Norman Schwarzkopf, the U.S. led coalition began a relentless, rapid assault on the Iraqi army which concluded in just 100 hours. On February 28, President Bush declared a ceasefire after crushing Iraqi forces, and Kuwait was liberated. Hussein was left in power but would be captured later by U.S. forces and executed in December 2003 for crimes against humanity.

There are conflicting theories about the origin of Valentine's Day. Some say that it's just a repackaged version of the Roman festival Lupercalia, while others point to the martyred St. Valentine. Regardless, the holiday has been associated with romance for centuries, but something resembling our modern celebration came into fashion in the mid-19th century.
Naturally, the complaints started right after that. According to Time, Valentine's Day cards went from a niche custom to a mainstream pursuit during the 1840s thanks at least partly to enterprising stationers who cashed in on a promising opportunity. By 1847, Valentine's Day cards were everywhere, and the New York Daily Tribune had published the first known gripe about it. "There was a time when Valentine's Day meant something," the writer opined.
The complaint achieved nothing, and Valentine's Day continued apace. The British confectioner Cadbury introduced the classic heart-shaped box of chocolates during the 1860s, and Hershey jostled for its own piece of the Valentine's Day market when it introduced Kisses in 1907. If you love Valentine's Day, ignore the complainers and enjoy yourself. But if you're a critic, consider that the complaints didn't matter in 1847, and they probably won't matter now.
While automation and AI will transform many white-collar professions, physical/skilled trades will be largely resistant. Electricians, plumbers, and construction workers will remain in high demand over the next 20 years, multiple labor observers say. These roles are essential for maintaining and expanding infrastructure, addressing housing shortages, and supporting the global shift toward electrification and renewable energy.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), electricians are expected to grow 9 percent, with about 81,000 annual openings driven by new construction. Plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters will grow about 4 percent, with steady demand from maintenance and new builds. And construction and extraction occupations are projected to grow faster than average, fueled by infrastructure needs.
The industry already faces severe worker shortages -estimated at over 400,000–500,000 unfilled construction positions in recent years, with projections indicating continued gaps through 2030 due to retiring Baby Boomers and insufficient new entrants. This creates upward pressure on job security and wages (many trades have now increased starting pay between $60,000–$100,000 annually.)
The U.S. has a chronic housing shortage, requiring millions of new homes over the coming decades. Broader infrastructure spending (roads, bridges, grids, EV charging stations) will further amplify labor needs, according to bls.gov.

As the housing market enters 2026, leading economists point to a range of forces likely to shape the year ahead for buyers, sellers, investors, and the real estate industry. The housing market is showing signs of a rebound and a rebalanced 2026.
NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun said, "We are seeing a little better condition for more home sales...with more inventory and the lock-in effect steadily disappearingbecause life-changing events are making more people list their property to move on to their next home. 2026 should be better with lower mortgage rates, and that will qualify more buyers. We are expecting home sales to increase by about 14% nationwide in 2026."
Yun also said that home price growth will be minimalroughly 2% to 3%- about the same as overall consumer price inflation. “It's a year when people's incomes begin to rise a little faster than consumer price inflation and home prices. We want people to have more purchasing power. Home prices are in no danger of any major decline, and even a 3% gain will bring smiles to many homeowners."
Yun added that there will also be less pressure for buyers. "Inventory levels are about 20% above one year ago, so there are more choices for consumers. We're not back to pre-COVID inventory yet, which I would consider normal, so we're still in a slight housing shortage condition. But consumers do not have to rush decisions the way they did before- there are more choices out there and less prevalence of multiple offers."
Sad to say, but those fun videos of porch pirates getting covered in paint and such on Facebook and TikTok-- all fake. Same thing with most dramatic disaster clips. The majority of viral videos shared on social media platforms are staged or fake. Forget the heartwarming wild animal clips. Animals don't really ask filming people for help. Welcome to the Artificial Intelligence (AI) world. Don't believe what you see or hear because anything that any person can dream up can be made into a video in minutes with AI. Ironically, if you suspect a video is AI generated, you can always ask AI, which doesn't mind telling on itself. Still, our reality is fragmenting.
In the early era of radio and television, people of all ages gathered to watch or listen to big events together. Big sports events, or a big television premiere -- these were things that everyone watched, young and old. They were the talk of the water cooler the next day; The top subject at school for kids.
A host of studies by researchgate.net and others suggest that the constant stream of fake videos promote widespread cynicism ("nothing is real") and low trust in all media. That can lead to a polarized, low-trust society. Yet, there is a potential for good news. People might well demand credible, verified sources of information. That could even give media outlets a boost. Unfortunately, traditional journalism has quite a job ahead of them. Gallup's September 2025 poll showed that public trust in traditional journalism was at a 50year low of just 28%.

If you put in extra hours on the job, the recently passed bill that included "No Tax on Overtime" means you won't pay federal income tax on part of your overtime earnings for tax years 2025 through 2028. Here's how it works: Under federal law (Fair Labor Standards Act), if you're a non-exempt hourly worker (or certain salaried folks earning about $35,000–$58,000 a year), you get "timeand-a-half" pay for hours over 40 a week.
That means you earn your regular hourly rate plus an extra 50 percent premium. The tax break applies to that premium portion (the "half"). For example, if you earn $20 an hour regular and work 10 overtime hours in a week: Overtime pay: 10 hours × $30 (1.5× rate) = $300 total. The deductible amount is the premium, so 10 hours × $10 extra = $100 taxfree from federal income tax.
You can deduct up to $12,500 per year (or $25,000 if married filing jointly). It phases out if your total income exceeds $150,000 single ($300,000 joint). You'll still pay Social Security/Medicare taxes and any state taxes on it, and employers withhold as usual—but you get the money back when filing your tax return.
The passage of the bill is expected to help millions of blue-collar folks like factory workers, nurses, truckers, and construction crews who rely on overtime. Estimates show an average savings of $1,400–$2,000 a year for those who qualify and work regular OT. It's temporary (ends 2028 unless extended), retroactive to January 2025, and can be claimed on taxes filed in 2026.

My second semester at the University of Central Florida has officially begun. This semester just feels much busier than my last, between classes, homework, and social life. Last semester I took one in-person class and three online classes. While the online classes were nice because they allowed me work at my own pace, I like having in-person classes to interact with all my classmates.
This semester I’m taking two classes in-person. It’s still not a lot, but it’s a step up from last semester. Although I only have one additional class in-person, I feel as though my workload has definitely increased this semester.
On top of my classes, I’ve been trying to work out to fight off the “freshmen 15” and stay healthy. It’s also been really nice to be living with my roommates after the long winter break, which ensures that I never have a dull moment.
Since being back at school, my roommates and I have done many roommate bonding activities including the most memorable, getting piercings together. While I’m still adjusting to my new schedule this semester, I think it will be better than the last.

“Color the World” with The New Florida Follies
Each year, The New Florida Follies dazzles South Florida audiences with a brand-new, Broadway-style spectacular filled with singing, dancing, music, and show-stopping costumes. The 2026 production “Color the World” promises to be their most vibrant yet—bursting with energy, heart, and a celebration of life through music and dance. This two-hour performance also features the acclaimed guest trio, The MidAtlantic Men, whose captivating vocals and magnetic charm have lit up Broadway stages and enchanted audiences nationwide.
The Follies will perform six shows across three South Florida venues—all 2PM Sunday matinees—throughout February and March including: February 15 & 22, March 22 & 29 at Countess de Hoernle Theatre, Spanish River High School, Boca Raton. And March 1st at Miramar Cultural Center, Miramar.

Kira is a beautiful 4 year old, 62 lb purebred German Shepherd. We rescued her from Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control last year in poor health. She now has a clean bill of health and is spayed, microchipped and up to date on her vaccinations and preventatives.
Kira loves to go to doggie daycare and play with other dogs, big and small. She enjoys playing with toys, going for long walks, and lounging on the couch or bed! She is crate trained and fully house trained. Kira is a big scaredy cat at heart and is not aggressive, but she is protective and will bark at strangers. Her adopter must be experienced with the German Shepherd breed and continue with her Behavioral Training.
