Passover: Exodus of the Israelites
Passover, known as Pesach in Hebrew, begins at sundown on April 1st and ends at sundown on April 9th. It is one of the most significant and widely observed holidays in Judaism. It commemorates the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt—a defining story that has been passed down through generations. The holiday begins on the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Nisan, typically falling in March or April.
At the heart of Passover is the Seder, a festive and symbolic meal centered on the retelling of the Exodus. Families gather to read from the Haggadah, a guide that outlines the order of the evening, including prayers, songs, and rituals. Special foods are eaten, each carrying deep meaning tied to the story of hardship, faith, and freedom.
A key observance during Passover is the removal of chametz—leavened products such as bread, pasta, and foods containing yeast—from the home. In their place, matzah, an unleavened bread, is eaten to recall the haste with which the Israelites fled Egypt, leaving no time for their dough to rise.
More than a historical remembrance, Passover is a time of reflection, renewal, and gratitude. It brings family and friends together to celebrate freedom, honor tradition, and share in a meal rich with meaning and heritage.
Christianity, for more than 2,000 years, has rested on one belief: That Jesus Christ, the one and only begotten son of God, died and rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures. Observed on the first Sunday after the full moon following the vernal equinox, Easter falls on Sunday, April 5th this year.
The holiday marks the culmination of the Passion of Christ and is preceded by Lent, a 40-day season of fasting, prayer, and repentance. Easter’s timing is closely connected to the Jewish festival of Passover, as the resurrection occurred shortly after Passover, reflecting the historical and theological link between the two religious observances.
The week leading up to Easter, known as Holy Week, includes several important observances: Palm Sunday, commemorating Jesus’s triumphant, yet humble, entry into Jerusalem; Good Friday, marking his crucifixion; and Holy Saturday, the day he lay in the tomb.
Easter traditions vary widely around the world, blending religious and cultural practices. Many people attend church services, while others take part in customs such as decorating eggs—symbols of new life—and Easter egg hunts. The Easter Bunny, a folkloric symbol of fertility, brings magical eggs to children across the world, a tradition that began in Europe in the 17th century.

Seed Breakthrough May Cut Grocery Bills
A California biotech firm called Ohalo has developed a breakthrough plant-breeding technology that could quietly reshape what you pay for food. The implications stretch far beyond the lab. The core innovation — called Boosted Breeding — uses gene editing to grow crops from true seeds rather than bulky plant cuttings or tubers, producing yields 50 to 100 percent higher in early trials.
For shoppers, the most immediate effects will likely appear in the produce aisle. Potatoes, strawberries, and almonds are all in Ohalo's active pipeline. Potatoes carry the most dramatic near-term potential. Farmers currently lose up to 20 cents of every dollar to the costs and disease risks of planting with seed tubers. But true potato seeds change that equation entirely, and with yields potentially doubling, the downward pressure on prices could be significant.
Almonds are a quieter story with real bite. Ohalo has already released a self-fertile almond variety that eliminates the need for pollinator trees, cutting grower operating costs by more than 30 percent.
Ohalo’s Boosted Breeding technology is different from traditional Genetic Modification (GMO). No foreign DNA is inserted from unrelated species. The entire genetics remain fully native to the source, much like an advanced hybrid that unlocks the plant’s own potential. The anticipated broader picture is one of gradual, structural deflation in many food categories.
America 250—The Bookseller
In the winter of 1775, George Washington had a problem. His ragged army had the British pinned inside Boston — but no artillery to force them out. Then a 25-year-old bookseller from Boston had an idea. Henry Knox had spent years reading every military book in his shop. He had no combat experience. What he had was audacity. Knox proposed to Washington that he personally retrieve the cannons recently captured at Fort Ticonderoga, 300 miles away in upstate New York — and drag them back through the Berkshire Mountains. In winter.
Knox reached the fort in December 1775 and found 59 cannons, howitzers, and mortars — some weighing a ton or more. He loaded them onto boats to cross Lake Champlain, built massive sleds, rounded up oxen and horses, and with sheer stubbornness, he set off through the mountains. Cannons crashed through lake ice. Sleds overturned on frozen hillsides. Knox improvised, cajoled, and pushed on.
He arrived in Cambridge in late January 1776 — remarkably, without losing a single gun. On the night of March 4th, Washington moved the cannons silently onto Dorchester Heights, overlooking Boston Harbor. By dawn, British General Howe stared up at fortifications that had materialized overnight. He reportedly said it looked like the work of 20,000 men. Unable to dislodge the cannons, the British evacuated Boston on March 17, 1776 — and never returned.
Knox went on to serve as Washington's chief artillery officer for the rest of the war and became America's first Secretary of War. Not bad for a bookseller.
Tree Enforcement Program Passes
In a move that has stunned neighborhoods across Boynton Beach and Lake Worth, county officials have announced a brand-new “Tree Equity Compliance Fee” for homeowners who fail to maintain what experts are calling an “adequate level of leafy ambiance.” According to the 47-page ordinance released last week, every residential property located within a registered homeowner’s association (HOA) must now have a minimum of one shade tree per 850 square feet of their total property size—or face an annual fine starting at $1,100.
County representatives insist the measure is about “environmental harmony and curb appeal consistency,” but many residents are scratching their heads—and their wallets. “I just took down a dying oak last fall,” said one homeowner. “Now I’m being penalized for not replacing it fast enough. The stump isn’t even cold yet.”
Even more surprising is how compliance will be measured. Beginning this month, county inspectors will reportedly use satellite imagery, drone flyovers, and what one official described as “shade-to-surface ratio analysis” to determine if a property meets the new requirement. Homes that are discovered to fall short will initially receive a warning notice allowing owners 30 days to comply before the fine is assessed, as well as a brochure detailing the acceptable types of shade trees.

The meals will then be shipped across the globe to feed people suffering from food insecurity. Our event facilitator is Rise Against Hunger, a well-respected global charity which specializes in facilitating these kinds of events.
This event is the result of a joint effort of Blessings and Bargains Thrift Shop, First Church, and Faith Church and Preschool. Everyone is invited to help us help others, which we gladly do in Jesus’ Name. Working together, we’ll be helping to make a significant difference in the lives of families who - without our assistance - might not otherwise survive. No experience is necessary to volunteer - our facilitator will provide all the training needed to package the meals and prepare them for shipment.

A Tribute to Robert Duvall

Robert Selden Duvall (1931 –2026) passed away peacefully at age 95 last month. The Academy and Emmy Award winning actor portrayed a wide variety of characters on and offscreen. His chameleonlike skill was compared to the incomparable Laurence Olivier. Duvall directed films, as well.
Duvall, born in San Diego, played a variety of roles. He served in the Army during the Korean War. Later, he lived in New York where he shared an apartment with Dustin Hoffman. Duvall appeared in plays before his screen debut as the reclusive Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird. He played opposite John Wayne in True Grit. He also had roles in Network and The Great Santini. He wrote, directed, and starred in The Apostle. Duvall won an Oscar for portraying a faded country music star in Tender Mercies.
The role that, perhaps, Duvall is most known for is that of Tom Hagen in The Godfather. Hagen was the sensible “consigliere” (family advisor) to the Corleone family. But he declined to play in The Godfather, Part Three. He told Bob Costas that to pay Al Pacino five times as much as him was “totally unacceptable.”
Duvall’s family has encouraged those who wish to honor his memory to do so in a way that reflects the life he lived by watching a great film or telling a good story around a table with friends.

The Opportunistic Traveler
A guy in New York orders a taxi at the airport because all flights were cancelled due to bad weather. The taxi pulls up, and he gets in, carrying a large box which he puts in the back. They set out driving, while the guy is looking at the box nervously every ten minutes or so.
When they get to New Jersey, the man calls his wife. “Hi Honey. Yes, they did give me the jewelry. I’ll have it all appraised in Atlanta; it will probably be around 200 thousand dollars. I’ll call you when I’m done.”
About an hour later, he asks the driver to pull up at the nearest gas station so he can have lunch, the driver obliges so he can fill up on gas too. The man gets out, goes to the diner, has his lunch, gets back out, and sees that the driver has run out on him with the box.
He goes back calmly to the store and asks the clerk if he has a large empty box in the back. The clerk asks, “Yeah, what do you need it for?”
The guy replies, “Well, I have to be in Florida by tomorrow.”

Half a Century Since Vietnam War
If you think back a little over 50 years, those haunting images from April 1975 may still linger: the frantic helicopter evacuations from Saigon's rooftops, the fall of the city, and the end of a long, divisive conflict.
In 1975, unified Vietnam under the Communist Party embarked on a strict socialist path: collectivized farms, nationalized industries, price controls, and state subsidies. In the South especially, there were widespread abuses — arbitrary detentions in camps, forced labor, property seizures, and relocations to remote "New Economic Zones." The model failed badly: shortages led to malnutrition, hyperinflation soared to over 700 percent, growth stagnated, and poverty increased.
By 1986, facing dwindling Soviet aid, Vietnam launched The Renovation — quietly abandoning the rigid command economy. Price controls eased, agriculture shifted to household farming, private enterprise was encouraged, and foreign investment welcomed. The results were dramatic. Over the past 40 years, Vietnam transformed into one of the world's fastestgrowing economies, still led by the one-party state, but not the isolated system of the 1970s.
In the U.S., time also revealed truths. The domino theory — that a communist Vietnam would trigger a cascade across Southeast Asia — proved overstated. While Laos and Cambodia fell to communist rule (Cambodia's Khmer Rouge regime was especially brutal), Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and others held firm. Vietnam and the U.S. are today close partners in trade, security, and regional affairs.
