Goodbye June, hello July! The midsummer month of July is officially the warmest month of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. It also has the designation as National Ice Cream Month, National Hot Dog Month, and National Watermelon Month in the United States.
On Saturday, July 4th, Americans will celebrate Independence Day, as well as our country’s 250th birthday. Although many of our founding fathers weren’t present or able to be together for the signing of the Declaration of Independence on this day in 1776, it is the official date Congress formally adopted it in our nation.
There are numerous ‘America250’ celebrations, parades, and massive firework displays planned in major cities across the country spanning July 3rd to July 5th, so be sure to check out some of the festivities.

Maritime Spectacular for America 250
For one week in July, New York Harbor will look the way it did 250 years ago. According to America250.org, the official 250th anniversary commission has partnered with Sail4th 250 to stage the largest peacetime maritime gathering in American history.
From July 3 to 8, more than 60 tall ships from 30 nations will sail into the Port of New York and New Jersey, joined by roughly 50 allied and U.S. naval vessels, the Queen Mary 2, and thousands of pleasure boats. The centerpiece is the International Parade of Sail on July 4. According to Sail4th 250, the procession will begin near the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, move north up the Hudson River past the Statue of Liberty, and end at the George Washington Bridge.
Participating ships will come from Argentina, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, the Marshall Islands, the Netherlands, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, and Uruguay, among others. Most are training vessels used by foreign navies as goodwill ambassadors.
After the parade, the ships will dock at South Street Seaport, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and Staten Island's Home Port and open to public visitors from July 5 through 8. According to NYC Tourism + Conventions, organizers expect between 8 to 10 million spectators, a crowd swollen further by FIFA World Cup matches at MetLife Stadium the same week. NBC and Telemundo will carry the parade live. For viewers at home, it will be the closest thing to a glimpse of the harbor George Washington defended.
Ice, Ice Baby…
Step off an elevator in almost any American hotel, and you'll find it: a humming ice machine, free for the taking. Step off an elevator at a hotel, in London or Paris, and you'll find a confused front desk wondering why anyone would want such a thing.
The free hotel ice machine is, very much, an American invention. According to Reader's Digest, the man to thank is Kemmons Wilson, founder of Holiday Inn. When he opened the first Holiday Inn in Memphis in 1952, Wilson was fed up with paying surcharges for ice at other hotels. He decreed that ice would be free at his hotels and put machines on every floor. The chains followed suit, and the practice never went away.
The deeper reason, though, is that Americans simply like ice more than just about anyone else. Mark Twain wrote about America’s love for ice water in 1890. Charles Dickens, visiting America, was reportedly horrified at the mounds of it in American drinks. According to CNN, ice historian Amy Brady puts it bluntly: Americans are unique in the world for their obsession with ice.
In much of Europe, ice is considered bad for digestion, or simply unnecessary. Tap water comes room temperature. Drinks come room temperature. Beer is famously served cool, not cold. Ask for ice and you may get a cube or two, brought reluctantly from the bar. So American travelers, take heart: it's not you. The ice machine down the hall is one of the small, strange comforts of home.
Frederick Douglass— American Patriot
In the summer of 1852, the Rochester Ladies' Anti-Slavery Society invited the country's most famous former slave, Frederick Douglass, to deliver what has come to be called one of the most important Fourth of July speeches in American history. Douglass told the 600-strong audience of white abolitionists that the nation had begun walking an anti-slavery path.
He began by praising the founding fathers. He called the signers of the Declaration "brave men, great enough to give fame to a great age." Then he turned to a peculiar moment in the country's evolving conscience. By 1852, according to the Smithsonian, no one in America defended the still thriving international slave trade publicly. It was universally agreed to be monstrous. Americans had already conceded the principle when they outlawed Africa’s slave trade in 1808. But many countries were now drawing a geographic line around the part of the trade they wanted to keep.
Then came the argument that genuinely surprised his audience. Many abolitionists at the time, led by William Lloyd Garrison, called the Constitution a pro-slavery document. But Douglass disagreed. He pointed out that the words "slave" and "slavery" appear nowhere in the Constitution.
To accuse the framers of writing a slavery document, he said, "is nothing but slander upon their memory." Douglass argued that the Constitution should be read as a "glorious liberty document", and that argument eventually became the legal foundation for the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments.

Siri turned 15 this year. Alexa is 12. Google Assistant is 10. For over a decade, they sold us a vision: an always-on digital helper that would run your home. What we actually got was a kitchen timer, a clock, and a neat way to play music. Then ChatGPT showed up in 2022 and quietly humiliated all three.
And the big tech companies have finally noticed. All three voice assistants are being completely rebuilt this year, each one bolted onto a real AI model. Apple licensed Google's Gemini after its own efforts stalled. Amazon retrofitted Alexa with a generative AI layer. And Google is replacing Google Assistant entirely.
What this means is that the assistants war is really an AI war. The more integrated the AI, pods and cameras, the more useful for alerts, a skill still not yet fully developed. An assistant today might be able to say what it sees: Sergei walking the dog. But what would make it useful are smart alerts: The dog jumped the fence. The rice is boiling over. Leave now or you will miss your plane.
Right now, a connected assistant can't reliably identify what it sees, so it could just as easily announce, "A rhino at the fence." Nor does an assistant today have any sense of what is important: "A leaf blowing" versus "A masked man at the door." But this is slated to happen in future iterations of the products.

Dillinger—America’s Favorite Outlaw

John Dillinger, born in 1903, was perhaps the most famous bank robber in U.S. history. Notorious for bank robberies and prison escapes across the Midwest between 1933 and 1934, Dillinger rose to notoriety during the Great Depression.
Dillinger dropped out of school after a difficult childhood in Indianapolis. Often in trouble, Dillinger was first incarcerated at the age of 21 for a foiled holdup of a grocery store in 1924. While incarcerated in Indiana State Prison, he learned the craft of bank robbery. Upon parole, he robbed five Indiana and Ohio banks.
In 1933, he was captured in Ohio but escaped the following month from Indiana State Prison with the help of five convict pals. Dillinger and his gang robbed over twenty banks and four police stations. They were arrested again in Arizona. In an Indiana prison, he executed his most-celebrated breakout using a fake pistol carved from a piece of wood.
Dillinger’s end finally came on July 22, 1934, after a trap was set for him by the FBI outside a Chicago movie theatre. As Dillinger exited, agents were waiting for him. When he attempted to draw his gun to escape, he was shot to death. Dillinger’s demise at the age of 31 came only two months after the deaths of fellow notorious criminals, Bonnie and Clyde.

What Medicare’s 6-Hour Rule Really Means
You booked the cruise. You packed the sunscreen. But before the ship leaves the dock, there is one piece of fine print every senior should understand: Medicare's so-called 6-hour rule. Here is how it works. Original Medicare may pay for medically necessary care from the ship's doctor only while the vessel is in a U.S. port or within six hours of one. The moment your ship is more than six hours from a U.S. port, Medicare stops paying, even for a heart attack, a broken hip, or anything else.
Six hours sounds like a quick afternoon outing. But in cruising terms, it’s often the majority of the cruise. A Caribbean sailing out of Miami, an Alaska run through international waters, a Mediterranean tour, almost all of it happens outside that six-hour bubble.
Ship medical centers expect payment upfront, often by credit card. You file for reimbursement later, and most of the time, you will not get much back. Medicare Advantage plans must meet the same minimum rules, but some include extra for emergency or urgent care benefits abroad. Check your plan before you sail. Most Medigap supplement plans (C, D, F, G, M, and N) offer foreign travel emergency coverage. They pay 80 percent of approved emergency care during the first 60 days of a trip, after a $250 deductible, with a $50,000 lifetime cap.
That $50,000 sounds generous until you price a medical evacuation by helicopter at sea. For real protection, most experts recommend a separate travel medical policy that includes evacuation.

One of my favorite things to do is explore and try new coffee shops and cafés in the area. Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting Glimmer Café in Delray Beach. Glimmer Café is a charming destination known for its unique drinks, stylish atmosphere and creative menu offerings.
The café has quickly gained attention for its handcrafted specialty lattes, fresh pastries, and beautifully presented breakfast and lunch dishes. Guests are drawn to the café's elegant interior, which features lush greenery and warm décor designed to create a relaxing experience.
Popular menu items include signature lattes, avocado toast, sandwiches and seasonal specialties, while visitors frequently praise the welcoming staff and inviting environment.
I ordered the Banana Bread latte, and it was amazing! Community reviews highlight the café as a favorite spot for meeting friends, working remotely or enjoying a leisurely weekend brunch. However, the seats fill up around brunch time, so it’s better to go earlier in the afternoon or plan on going during weekdays to avoid the rush. It’s fun to try out new places, so be sure to check out the Glimmer Café—I highly recommend it!
For generations, the front porch was where Americans caught up on the news. You sat. You watched the world go by. Neighbors waved, stopped, and sometimes settled in for an hour. The porch faded, but the need for it never did. According to a recent report from the National Institute on Aging, about one in three people reports feeling lonely, and this social isolation in older adults is linked to higher blood pressure, heart disease, depression, and cognitive decline.
The fix is not complicated. It is finding your version of the porch. For some, that still means an actual porch. For others, it might be a balcony with two chairs. A community courtyard with benches under a tree. A bistro table by the front door of an apartment building. A lawn chair set up in the driveway on a summer evening. The physical setting matters less than the habit.
The point is to be visible and to be available. Sitting outside signals to neighbors that you are open to conversation. A wave turns into a hello, a hello turns into a question, and a question turns into a meaningful conversation. According to research published in The Gerontologist, seniors who know the people in their neighborhood report significantly less loneliness, even when they live alone.
Senior apartment communities have something the old neighborhoods lost: proximity. Neighbors are steps away, not a car ride. A few minutes outside the door, at the same time each day, is often all it takes to become a familiar face.

Free ‘Mammography Screening Days’ in PB County
Promise Fund, a South Florida-based nonprofit dedicated to increasing survivorship from breast and cervical cancer, will host free Mammography Screening Days on the following dates: July 11 at 411 W Indiantown, Jupiter 33458, from 8am- 2pm and July 12 at 6073 Summit Blvd, West Palm Beach 33415, from 9am- 2pm.
The screening events are presented in partnership with Florida Mobile Mammography, HealthyMe, Health Care District of Palm Beach County, Origin Church, Department of Health, and Monarch Health Services.
“The Promise Fund is here to make screenings accessible for everyone, especially those who might otherwise go without care,” said Lissette Lahoz, Promise Fund’s Palm Beach County Navigator. “Early detection can make a real difference. Treatment is often easier to manage, and people are able to focus more on their health, their families, and their everyday lives.”

Promise Fund reaches tens of thousands of women in Palm Beach, Broward and Martin Counties who are uninsured, underinsured or have limited or no access to healthcare. The organization, founded in 2018 by Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker, is dedicated to increasing survivorship from cervical cancer and breast cancer by providing support and access to screenings, as well as early detection, treatment, and beyond.

Who Will Rule the Moon?
Given the history of humanity, war on the moon wouldn't be that surprising. We've fought everywhere else, but now the moon's south pole, where frozen water hides in shadowed craters, is shaping up to be the next contest.
The U.S., China, and India all have active lunar programs aimed at putting humans in roughly the same neighborhood. They are looking for water, and it isn't just for drinking. Split it into hydrogen and oxygen and you've got rocket fuel, which makes the moon a potential gas station for deeper space. Strategic resources plus overlapping claims is a familiar recipe for war.
The 1967 Outer Space Treaty bans nuclear weapons in space and military bases on the moon, but it's silent on conventional weapons. Firearms would work on the moon. Bullets would travel much farther in low gravity with no atmosphere to slow them down. Lasers would thrive in the vacuum.
If war ever reaches the moon, humans probably won't do the fighting. Robots will. Imagine the Sci-Fi image of dustcaked machines trudging across craters a century after the humans back home signed a peace deal. But it's also possible that two rival robots meeting at a contested ice deposit could, in principle, compare notes and realize their objectives don't actually conflict.
Whoever builds the robot decides the future. Militaries have strong incentives to build AI smart enough to win fights but not smart enough to question them. A robot that can refuse a stupid order can also refuse a smart one its commander really wants carried out.
These sweet American Staffordshire Terrier puppies were born in February 2026. They found themselves at Miami-Dade County Animal Services after their owner surrendered the litter. Lady Luck Animal Rescue was quickly contacted, picked them up, and they were brought straight to our vet for a checkup.

The Baby Who Changed Medicine
KJ Muldoon was five months old when doctors at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia put him on a liver transplant list. He had been diagnosed with CPS1 deficiency, a rare and often fatal genetic disorder in which the body cannot break down ammonia produced during normal digestion. Without a working liver enzyme, ammonia builds up in the blood and damages the brain. About half of infants with CPS1 deficiency do not survive. His doctors had another idea. Working with researchers at Penn Medicine, the team designed a personalized CRISPR gene-editing therapy specifically for KJ, one that had never been used on any human being before. Using a delivery method called lipid nanoparticles, they sent the gene-editing tool directly into his liver cells to correct the faulty enzyme.
The entire process, from diagnosis to first treatment, took six months. KJ received his first infusion in late February 2025, with follow-up doses in March and April. He is now walking, talking, and thriving.
The medical significance is hard to overstate. KJ is the first person in history to receive a therapy designed specifically for their individual genetic mutation — not a treatment adapted from something else, but one built from scratch for him alone. Researchers believe the same approach can be applied to thousands of other rare genetic conditions. For families facing diagnoses that once had no answers, that is an extraordinary thing.
