Dial-up Internet Hangs Up It was the end of an era that most people probably didn’t know they were still living in. In September, AOL (formerly America Online) officially discontinued its dial-up internet service after more than 30 semi-reliable years. According to PBS, dial-up represented just .13 percent of homes with internet connections that still relied on dial-up as of last year. During their heyday in the 1990s and early 2000s, AOL released a blizzard of promotional CDs to American homes — more than a billion, according to Vox. And even though the CDs were notoriously wasteful and annoying as they filled mailboxes day after day, they also worked like a charm. Anyone with a decent computer and a phone line could pop in a CD and AOL would shepherd them into the future with just enough free hours to hook them into a paid subscription. But dial-up internet connections -- well, they were annoying after the initial novelty wore off. Slow and easily disrupted when someone picked up the phone, it quickly lost its market dominance once broadband became accessible and affordable for most American homes. While dial-up is officially dead, those millions and millions of CDs are still hanging around in junk piles and landfills, and maybe even in the corner of your own house somewhere. You can’t use them to connect to the internet anymore -- but they make great coasters in a pinch. 6 NN

Dick Van Dyke Dances to 100 At age 99, in preparation for his 100th birthday in December 2025, famed actor and optimist Dick Van Dyke optimistically released his book: 100 Rules for Living to 100. Van Dyke admits in his book that there aren't actually 100 rules, but the reader will certainly find more than 100 nuggets in his description of his life and 75 years in show business. Born in 1925, the son of a salesman in West Plains Missouri, Van Dyke started his career in show business in 1947 as a mime in a comedy duo. By 1959 he made his Broadway debut in The Girls Against the Boys. In 1961 he began the hit sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show, and the iconic Mary Poppins in 1964. He's never really stopped working, even though he says he is "super old." His sight is bad. His hearing is bad. Like the old man characters that made him famous, he admits he stoops, shuffles and teeters. He suffers the sorrows that come with age: the loneliness of losing his friends and family. Still, he says, he doesn't let those things define him. Today, he says his wife, Arlene, 46 years his junior, keeps him laughing and moving, even doing a bit of soft shoe with him in the kitchen. "I've made it to one hundred, in no small part, because I have stubbornly refused to give in to the bad stuff in life," he writes.

Resolutions are an Ancient Tradition If you are joining millions of Americans in making New Year's resolutions, you are continuing an ancient tradition begun 4,000 years ago in Babylon. Around 2000 BCE, the Babylonian new year (called Akitu) was when people made promises to the gods—mostly practical ones like paying off debts, returning borrowed farm tools, or being better citizens. If they kept these promises, the gods would favor them in the coming year. Resolutions often also included pledges of loyalty. The practice evolved after that. Ancient Romans adopted it when Julius Caesar moved the new year to January 1 in 46 BCE (to honor Janus, the two-faced god who looks backward into the past) and suggested reflecting on the past year and planning improvements. Early Christians initially rejected the custom as “pagan,” but by the Middle Ages many used New Year’s as a time for spiritual reflection. “Watch Night” services, still held in some churches today, trace back to this. But, the actual phrase “New Year’s resolutions” first appeared in print in a Boston newspaper in 1813. About 50 percent of American adults say they make New Year’s resolutions each year, according to YouGov. But only 8–12 percent of people report successfully keeping their resolutions for the entire year. In keeping with that reality, Quitter’s Day is an unofficial holiday that falls on the second Friday in January. The day marks the peak time when most people give up on their resolutions. But the day also offers the opportunity to recommit back to your original goal.

The Man who Revolutionized Retirement
Ted Benna, widely known as the "father of the 401(k)," revolutionized how Americans prepare for their golden years. Born in 1943, Benna grew up on a farm in Northcentral PA, attending Drexel University. By the late 1970s, he was a benefits consultant and owner of The Johnson Companies, a Pennsylvania-based firm specializing in employee retirement plans. In 1978, Congress added Section 401(k) to the Internal Revenue Code as a minor tax provision, effective January 1, 1980. It allowed workers to defer taxes on certain income, but it was aimed at executive bonuses. Benna reimagined it: Employees could contribute pre-tax salary portions to investments, with employers adding matching funds as an incentive. He designed and got IRS approval for the first true 401(k) plan in 1981 at his firm, layering in features like voluntary contributions and matches that weren't in the original law. What started as a tax hack exploded. Today, 401(ks) hold over $7 trillion, serving 60+ million workersand have largely replaced traditional pensions. Benna's innovation shifted retirement from employer-guaranteed to individual responsibility, empowering workers but tying savings to market risks. Now in his early 80s, Benna lives quietly on his Pennsylvania farm, fundraising for Compassion International (a child sponsorship charity). He's vocal about 401(k) flaws: high fees, over-reliance on stocks, and how it "opened the door for Wall Street to make even more money." He regrets its pension-killing side effects but praises it for middle-class savers.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a national holiday in the U.S. that honors the life and legacy of a leader of the civil rights movement. Going, Going…Gone The good news is that workers in the leisure and hospitality industry will probably always have a job. But the glory days are in the rearview mirror for others, and one day, they might just ride off into the sunset entirely. • Motor vehicle parts manufacturing. This industry is expected to contract more than 3 percent each year in the U.S. • Coal mining. The solar and wind energy sectors both employ far more workers than coal mining, which employs fewer people in total than many individual large companies and is expected to continue shrinking around 2 percent each year. But don't count coal out yet. Coal is considered a bridge energy for power-hungry data centers. At least three major power companies have recently stalled plans to retire U.S. coal plants to power AI initiatives. ••Tobacco manufacturing. Unless the Surgeon General changes their mind someday, Americans aren’t likely to pick up smoking en masse again, which is why the tobacco industry’s annual output is expected to shrink by more than 10 percent (with thousands of anticipated jobs eliminated) by 2034. • Magnetic manufacturing and optical media. More than 70 million Americans are 65+, and baby boomers now lead both buying and selling. This, in turn, is driving trends in downsizing, aging in place, and multigenerational living. For years, the real estate industry has heard that the "Silver Tsunami" was coming- the long-predicted wave of baby boomers moving. And that wave is now here. Baby boomers are really holding the cards in the real estate market, according to NAR's deputy chief economist. They have built a tremendous amount of housing equity, and they are making moves toward retirement. Baby boomers remain active buyers and sellers, motivated by retirement, proximity to family, or the appeal of smaller, low-maintenance living. Aging in place is one option. Only about 10% of homes nationwide are fully prepared for senior living, according to research from AARP. Yet, many baby boomers say they plan to remain in their homes as they age. Without thoughtful updates, homes can become difficult or even unsafe, so it’s best to work with professionals to integrate features to make the home more adaptable. And multigenerational living continues to rise. About 17% of buyers purchased multigenerational homes last year, according to NAR's decade-long data. According to JAMA, peanut allergies affected about .4 percent of children in 1997, but by 2018, more than 2 percent of children were allergic to peanuts. But recent data suggests that peanut allergy incidence is finally starting to decline -- and also suggests that previous guidance on peanut introduction may have been driving the sudden increase. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommended that parents delay peanut introduction for three years, and some providers encouraged parents to wait as long as five years. But the landmark Learning Early About Peanut Allergy (LEAP) study, published in 2015, showed that introducing allergenic foods early actually decreased allergy risk among infants and young children. Today, AAP guidance reflects these findings, and urges the introduction of allergenic foods for all infants at approximately six months of age. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, potentially allergenic foods include cow's milk products, eggs, fish and shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soy, and sesame.

The Art of the Legacy Letter Who knows what the world will be like 50 years from now? Will robots do everything for us? Will work be optional? Whatever the future holds, human life will still have certain trials and triumphs. There will still be broken hearts. Still be bad decisions. There will still be good decisions and sudden successes. Struggles, humor, love. We'll still ask ourselves what is important in life. After all your years of living, do you have an answer to that question? New Year's is a great time to write a legacy letter to your children or grandchildren, spouse, mentors, or close friends. Write it, keep it where it will be found, and add to it next year. Katheen M. Rehl, writing for Sixty and Me, says the first step is to decide to whom you will write and address the letter specifically to that person. Tell them why you are writing to them. Next, adopt a thankful tone and tell the recipient why you are grateful about him or her. Detail what one big lesson you learned in life. Tell what you think matters most in life. Tell something unknown about yourself. You might consider what you wish you knew about people in your family tree. Tell some stories about the ancestor you knew about. Tell the family stories. In your closing, give your readers your love. Tell them what your hope is for them. Offer encouragement. You can write more than one legacy letter and write to more than one person. You might even want to record a video. The key is to search your heart and try to send your thoughts and wisdom to the next generation.

But I will be celebrating for an additional reason: My all – time favorite book, Frankenstein, was published on January 1, 1818. It was originally published anonymously, though its author, Mary Shelley, would eventually be credited years later. Over the past 150 years, Frankenstein has had numerous film adaptations. Famously written during poor summer weather conditions in Switzerland for a writing contest, Frankenstein takes on numerous themes: Can humans be omnipotent? What does it mean to be human? What is the importance of compassion? And what defines good and evil? A clever question one may ask is, “What was the name of the monster?” In the book, the monster has no name. It is actually the brilliant scientist, Victor Frankenstein, who creates the monster. His experiment, intended to conquer death, does not go well. Victor is horrified with his creation and abandons it. But the rejected creature, who is intelligent and sensitive, spirals into loneliness and rage. The tension escalates as the story continues. I have read this book more than once, and it gets my wholehearted recommendation. But if the suspense is more than you can tolerate, there is always the cinematic farce written by Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder, Young Frankenstein (1974).

St. Augustine is considered one of Florida’s most ‘touristy’ cities but there’s a good reason for this. The city is home to the historical fort, Castillo de San Marcos, built by the Spanish to defend the city of St. Augustine and the Atlantic trade route. The fort was controlled by many conquering forces over the years, beginning with the Spanish, then Great Britain, The Confederate States of America, and The United States. It has been managed by the National Park Services since 1933. Not only is the fort an amazing landmark to explore, but the city itself has lots of different things to offer. St. Augustine is the oldest city in Florida and was founded by the Spanish in 1565. The city has amazing Spanish architecture on many of its buildings to view but even better shopping and restaurants to eat at. My personal favorite restaurant is Harry’s Seafood Bar and Grille, but the city has many unique restaurants. Besides shopping and eating, the city has fun tourist spots such as the Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum and the Fountain of Youth. If you’ve never been to St. Augustine, it’s definitely a destination to add to your list.

Treating the underlying disorder is essential. Here are some practical steps you can take: Drink one or two glasses of water in the evening. You might try a drink like Pedialyte, coconut water, or a low-sugar sports drink. Stretch calves and hamstrings very gently for 2-3 minutes before bed. Keep legs warm at night, but don't use heavy blankets that force your feet to point down. Try light walking and ankle pumps (up and down) several times a day. And ask your doctor to check potassium and magnesium levels, and kidney and thyroid function.

Today, many kids who have never paid a bill, worked a part-time job, or made a budget are signing school loans that add up to $40,000+ for an undergraduate degree for Modern Dance. If you are thinking of how student loans worked in the old days, you are thinking wrong today. Before the 1990s, loans were tightly controlled, need-based, capped at about $1,000 annually (roughly $8,000 today), and disbursed as checks made payable directly to the college. Students signed the check at registration and bought a bus pass to the dorm. Usually, students had a work required component in their aid packages. Cosigners were rare and vetted in person at financial aid offices, with no online shortcuts. Today, the game has changed. The system has ballooned into a $1.7 trillion behemoth serving 43 million borrowers, driven by the 1965 Higher Education Act's Guaranteed Student Loans (now Direct Loans). Disbursement is still school-directed: Funds hit the bursar's office 10 days presemester, covering tuition first, with a chunk of money left for 'costs of attendance,' a figure the student decides entirely on his own. Those funds are wired or checked to students within 14 days. "Cost of Attendance" now includes broad personal expenses like rent and travel, enabling $120,000+ degrees at private institutions. Once, students struggled to work and pay for their housing while studying during their younger college years. Today, they struggle later in their working life with huge student loans, to which they agreed. NN 45
