Realizing early on that success is not handed to you. You need to put yourself out there and work for it. There will be struggles and it will be tough, but perseverance will get you through.

Our Managing Principal, Josef Rettman, is always available to discuss strategy and ensure NEI is providing exceptional client service. Our dedicated staff has a great work ethic and we strive to have a competitive environment while delicately cultivating a positive work/life balance. What advice can you offer to someone who is interested in a career in your industry? The construction industry and more specifically general contracting and construction management is extremely competitive. However, completing a project and knowing that you played a part is rewarding and provides satisfaction. How have your life experiences impacted who you are professionally? Success is not inherent upon good luck, but rather how you deal with adversity. I’m extremely competitive and I have had the fortune to have some “victories” and I work really hard to avoid “defeats.” If you have a mentor, who is it and how have they influenced your personal & professional growth? I’m approaching my fourth decade in the construction industry so I have been fortunate to have a few people who have “put their arm on my shoulder” and provided valuable advice. All of these individuals exuded dedication, determination, and humility and I try to do the same.
cover story NEI Completes New Project for The Neighborhood Developers NEI has announced the completion of Acadia, a 42,000 SF new affordable housing development with 34 units in Chelsea, MA. Located on the site of the former French Naturalization Club on Spencer Avenue, Acadia is the latest affordable housing project by The Neighborhood Developers (TND), a community development corporation (CDC) dedicated to building affordable homes in Chelsea, Revere and Everett. NEI General Contracting has constructed over a dozen buildings for The Neighborhood Developers. Located only one block from Chelsea’s four elementary schools, and one block from major bus lines on Broadway, the building includes a community room, common laundry, on-site parking for all 34 homes, central air conditioning, and new landscaping and public way improvements along Spencer Avenue to benefit residents and community members alike. “We have worked with NEI General Contracting since 2006, and we have developed a true partnership with them,” said Rafael Mares, Executive Director for The Neighborhood Developers. “We share a common dedication to developing affordable housing to promote economic mobility, opportunity,
and quality of life in our communities. We are certain our new residents will be pleased by the quality design and construction of their new homes at Acadia.” The development includes eight units of supportive housing designated for formerly homeless families, meeting a critical need in the region. These homes will serve families who are living in shelters, who have lost their homes and are in other temporary housing, or families in imminent risk of losing their housing.

NEI Hosts Charity Event For Wonderfund to Benefit Foster Kids in Need NEI recently hosted a charity event at its headquarters in Randolph, MA for the Wonderfund to benefit foster children in the care of the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families (DCF).
Office News NEI donated $5,000 to host an Emergency Aid Hero event to benefit the Brockton office of the DCF. This donation was used to purchase clothing and ageappropriate comfort items, which were then sorted by size and gender by NEI employees to create kits for foster children transitioning into the system. Many of the 10,000 children who enter DCF foster care each year come into care with only the clothes on their backs. In this traumatic time, many children must leave their homes without necessary everyday items like winter coats, pajamas, underwear, shoes, or their favorite comforting teddy bear. Community support will help children in these difficult circumstances feel more comfortable and cared for as they enter their new surroundings. The Wonderfund is a private, nonprofit, 501(c)3 that serves children engaged with the Massachusetts DCF through a unique and exclusive partnership.
Woof! Have you heard that animals in the office can reduce employee stress and increase levels of job satisfaction? NEI recently had some furry visitors in the office for Bring Your Dog to Work Day and it was a blast!
NEI Breaks Ground on Fully Affordable Housing Development in Brockton NeighborWorks Southern Mass was recently joined by NEI, Utile, Inc., and city and state officials to break ground on Sycamore on Main, a fully affordable housing development in downtown Brockton, MA. Located just a few blocks from a commuter rail station, Sycamore on Main is part of the Brockton Downtown Action Strategy to revitalize the neighborhood.

The five-story building is being built on the site of a former department store and most recently the site of last summer’s dynamic cultural venue, PROVA!, and will offer 48 units and ground-floor retail space. Sycamore on Main is being funded by Rockland Trust, The City of Brockton, and MassDevelopment.
