FLAT 9 AT WHITTIER In addition to housing and safer streets, part of the vision was to promote family self-sufficiency by providing better access to quality education and job opportunities while using the community’s strengths to preserve its character.
NEI Breaks Ground on Ashley Square Apartments in Jacksonville NEI recently broke ground on a new senior living community in Jacksonville called Ashley Square. Located in the city’s downtown Cathedral District, the 168,260 SF development will fill a one-acre, blighted, vacant lot. The six-story, 120-unit building will be comprised of 585 SF onebedroom units and 853 SF two-bedroom units. 100% of them will be affordable- 15% of which will be reserved for low-income residents. Parking will occupy two floors of the development with 160 spaces, and there will also be a fitness center and a club room. NEI is partnering with BlueSky Communities of Tampa on the project and PQH Group Design Inc. of Jacksonville is the architect.

WORC is Launching Soon 2
We have some exciting news to share! NEI will soon launch a one-of-a-kind non-profit educational center called WORC2. Developed by NEI General Contracting in conjunction with various partners, WORC2 is designed to engage local, community‐based, diverse businesses and workforce on all construction projects throughout Boston neighborhoods. Our particular focus will be to provide workers and small businesses with “one-stop shopping” for resources and technical support to promote growth and success in their careers or businesses. This endeavor will expand our ability to deliver a diverse workforce on projects and create more opportunities for workers and sub-contractors throughout our project-based communities.

2020 has proven to be one of the most challenging years in recent history... From the Pandemic’s arrival on our shores in late February to the social injustice and continued unrest taking place across the country, this year has forced us to rise to the challenge professionally, personally, and socially. We sincerely thank all of you, our partners, for your continued support, effort, understanding, flexibility, and most of all, your open-mindedness, which has allowed us to navigate through difficulties together and to successfully deliver an amazing portfolio of projects despite the obstacles the year has presented us. Amid these historic moments, NEI has, not only met historic challenges, we have continued to keep the nation and the economy moving. We have been extremely busy with both construction projects and other exciting endeavors. We reflect on 2020 with gratitude for our partners, staff, and all that we have accomplished.

In the summer of 2020, NEI finished construction on Flat 9 at Whittier for Preservation of Affordable Housing (POAH). Located at 100 Cabot Street in Roxbury, MA, Flat 9 at Whittier is the first of a two-phased project, and involved the demolition and removal of the existing Whittier Street Apartments to make way for its new 92 rental units which include one, two, and three-bedroom apartments and townhouses. The development includes amenities such as a community room, courtyard, office space for residents, and a playground. NEI has also been selected as the general contractor for Phase 2 which will include 52 new multi-family units in stacked townhouses. The Whittier Choice Neighborhood Initiative (CNI) is a collaboration between POAH, Madison Park Development Corporation, and the Boston Housing Authority to redevelop the Whittier Street Apartments site in Roxbury. When complete, the site will be fully redeveloped with over 350 units of mixed-income housing and commercial space.
