Dear Friends, As we reflect on another year of support for agricultural education and FFA, we want to recognize the individuals, groups and companies that invested in the work that we do. We know that your support must be earned and want you to see firsthand how your donations are used. We are proud to invest in agricultural education for 9,000 FFA members and their FFA advisors by growing leaders, building communities and strengthening agriculture. •
Growing Leaders – The Nebraska FFA FFA Foundation has continued to support CASE (Curriculum in Agricultural Science Education) Institutes and the equipment that goes along with them. Katie Arp, agriculture teacher at Bishop Neumann and Wahoo High Schools is in her fourth year of teaching and has participated in four institutes. While she says, these institutes are just as beneficial for her as they are for her students, I know there are many agriculture teachers out there that need more support just to get through each day.
•
Building Communities - In its second year, the local chapter grant program was able to provide $55,000 to local FFA chapters. The McCook agricultural education program had a shop that was sitting empty because of a unique collaboration with the local community college. Students are able to take welding classes and earn college credit, so the high school shop sat empty. The local chapter grant helped them turn this empty space into a learning opportunity. They revitalized their shop into an indoor greenhouse with tower gardens. The gardens are used alongside classroom curriculum and produce is sold as a fundraiser for the FFA chapter.

Strengthening Agriculture - We continue to invest in Nebraska FFA programming to provide Nebraska FFA members with exposure and preparation for the 300 careers in agriculture. In addition to the many competitive events at state convention, the agriscience fair is an area where we continue to see growth. It gives students like Tara Allen of the Adams Central FFA chapter the opportunity to learn about many different areas of agriculture, food and natural resources. Her project about how seasonal alfalfa cutting number affects the nutrient content of the forage produced, which is providing her with experience in research, technology and future career in agriculture she wouldn’t have learned about otherwise.
We have a lot of work to do in order to support the need for employees with experience in agriculture, food and natural resources. Your investment in the Nebraska FFA Foundation is vital to making a difference in the lives of students who will be tasked to feed our growing population. Record-Setting Numbers
Nebraska FFA has grown dramatically recently with five chapters added in 2018-19. Agricultural education prepares students for careers in agriculture, food and natural resources. Our population is growing, and jobs and careers in all sectors of agriculture will be vital to keeping up with the global demand for agricultural and food production. In 2018-19, there were 189 FFA chapters in Nebraska with the average chapter size of 50 FFA members.

CASE Institute Eases Planning Time for Arp Katie Arp always knew she wanted to work with kids, so she went into college with the intention of becoming an English teacher. In April of her freshman year, Arp attended the Nebraska FFA Convention State Degree ceremony to support an old friend and mentee. “I wanted to be there for her. I remember being super proud of her as she reached one of the goals she had throughout high school. In that moment, I decided that I wanted to be able to keep feeling like that,” said Arp. The next Monday, Arp went back to school and switched her major to Agricultural Education.
Katie Arp, Bishop Neumann agriculture teacher and FFA advisor, is certified in four CASE curriculums.
This fall, Arp started her fourth year of teaching and is now the agriculture teacher and FFA advisor for Bishop Neumann in Wahoo. Helping her students succeed is what made Arp want to start teaching in the first place and CASE (Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education) professional development institutes help her do just that. Each CASE Institute focuses on a specific course in agriculture, food and natural resources and is 50-100 hours of training. Once a teacher completes a workshop, they become certified in that area. They’re supplied with updated curriculum and materials and trained to use it in their classrooms. To date, Arp has gone through four CASE workshops. Arp explained that without CASE, she would be a lot more stressed and worried about what to teach and when to teach it. “With CASE, I have a whole curriculum ready for me to use, that I just have to tweak to fit my classes each year. I can now direct time, that would normally be spent writing lesson plans and aligning everything to standards, toward working with students directly to help them learn the material and practice class concepts with the overall goal of helping them succeed,” said Arp. Having CASE curriculum and materials to implement benefits the students in addition to the teachers. “I really liked how it is very much student-centered and inquiry-based learning instead of lecture-based,” Arp explained. “Much of the instruction is through labs, activities, and projects not through lecture. This lets students see concepts first hand and is especially appealing and beneficial to students who are kinesthetic learners.” The Nebraska FFA Foundation is very proud to be able to support Nebraska agriculture teachers through funding for CASE workshops. As Nebraska continues to struggle with retention of agriculture teachers, there continues to be a need to provide agriculture teachers with a sense of stability and the resources they need to be successful.

Wauneta-Palisade Receives New Shop Equipment Through Grant
Thank you Charles W. Herbster for donating $20,000 to the Nebraska FFA Foundation Local Chapter Grant Program. Mr. Herbster toured four grant recipients schools this past year including Wauneta-Palisade’s agriculture classroom. Imagine yourself using a computer from 20-30 years ago. Your computer is slow and couldn’t really do a lot compared to today’s technology. This is exactly how the welding equipment at Wauneta-Palisade Schools was until last school year.
Having the updated equipment has already been beneficial for learning and to prepare for FFA competitive events. In March of 2019, the chapter had two district champions in welding, one in oxy/acetylene and one in TIG welding. Before that the students that participated in the welding contest felt that they were unprepared because they didn’t know how to run the newer machines that had different features than their older machines. “I think having welders that actually work like welders should give us a lot better chance in making it in districts and hopefully to state,” said Anthony, welding student.
Their agricultural classroom updated their outdated welding and shop equipment with the help of the Nebraska FFA Foundation Local Chapter Grant Program and their school district. “There are a couple of reasons our shop equipment needed to be upgraded. Our students were at a disadvantage in going to contests because our equipment was older than what was being used. Our students were not being prepared for modern industry with our equipment. We felt there was a need to bring them up to date,” said Rod Gaston, WaunetaPalisade agriculture teacher.
They now have two welding classes with around 24 students in their high school of 65 students. Of the 65 total high school students, 31 are FFA members. Colby, welding student, said, “I like the new welder better, they have a digital screen to set the heat and wire speed on the wire welder. On the old wire welder, you had to turn a knob with a bunch of different numbers so it is nearly impossible to get the heat and speed correct for the certain type of metal and thickness.”
Wauneta-Palisade’s agriculture teachers applied through the Nebraska FFA Foundation Local Chapter Grant Program in the spring of 2018. In the summer of 2018, they received word that the Nebraska FFA Foundation was fully funding their grant request. The teachers said that without the grant, the updates would not have been possible to purchase in that amount of time. The grant selection committee chose Wauneta-Palisade as one of the 11 grant recipients of 2018 to receive $9,363 of the $55,000 awarded. The school district then matched the grant from the Foundation.
The main reason the school wanted to invest in the updates was to teach the students skills they can use in the industry today that will be beneficial to their future careers. Plus welding is a skill that will always be helpful in the students lives. The Nebraska FFA Foundation is able to give grants to chapters in need for innovative projects because of many generous donors. This was the second grant program, and the Foundation plans to continue the grant program for many years to help support the local FFA chapters, agricultural classrooms and school-based enterprises/ Supervised Agricultural Experiences. The Foundation has been able to impact 16 chapters through the program in its first two years.
They were able to purchase a Lincoln Precision TIG 225 welder, a Powermax 65 plasma system, a CNC plasma cutter, a Millermatic 252 Mig welder, an oxy/acetylene torch and torch kit, grinder, drill, wrenches, sockets, welding helmets, face shields, welding jackets and welding books. The welding teacher, Mr. Danny Schluckebier, described being able to purchase all of this updated equipment like winning the lottery. All of the equipment was purchased during the 2018-19 school year.
Wauneta-Palisade has already seen the benefit from the new shop equipment and is excited to use the new equipment for many years.

STRENGTHENING AGRICULTURE
Garret Talcott Named American Star Farmer Finalist Growing up on his family farm outside of Bennet, Garret Talcott always knew that he was going to be a farmer.
without their land, his SAE wouldn’t be where it is today. He also thinks about how much knowledge his parents taught him throughout his childhood to make him the farmer he is today.
Garret Talcott of the Palmyra FFA Chapter always had a passion for agriculture. As a child, he would ride with his parents in the tractors and always enjoyed it. When he wasn’t outside, he would still be farming with his own toy tractors in the house. He was already dreaming about becoming a farmer.
FFA also benefited Talcott because he learned skills such as land judging and livestock judging, which are useful skills he will use forever. While in college, Talcott continued to grow his SAE projects. He credits FFA for teaching him the important record keeping skills involved with farming. When you have an SAE project, you are required to keep records to submit to earn your Greenhand, Chapter, State and American Degrees along with applying for proficiency and star awards.
Once Talcott was in high school, he could finally be in FFA. He participated in FFA leadership conferences and competitive events, attended State FFA Convention, community service projects, National FFA Convention and also started his Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAE).
Talcott was selected as an American FFA Star Farmer Finalist in 2019 at National FFA Convention. He also received his American Degree.
Talcott’s SAEs started with working on his family farm and cattle operation, managing his own cattle herd, show cattle and wheat production. His family doesn’t usually plant wheat, but Talcott wanted to plant wheat because it was something new to him and he could use the straw as bedding for his cattle. His wheat SAE project taught him how to market his grain, about the wheat growing season and about contracts to rent the land.
He learned through FFA and his family that community service is important. Talcott serves on the Bennet Fire Department and is in his third year. He wanted to be on the fire department because that is something crucial to have in a town. Talcott plans to continue to grow his farming operation with his wife, Morgan and family. “I thank my great landlords that allowed me to farm their land, custom combining customers, family, FFA advisor and everyone that has helped me along the way with my farming career.”
By the time Talcott was graduating high school to go to college for welding, he had already learned how to run all of the equipment on his family’s farm. His SAE projects grew and changed over the four year time period. He grew his cattle herd, produced corn and soybeans, grew and sold sweet corn, raised hogs, had a lawn care business and started his own custom combining business with the combine and semi that he purchased himself. Talcott was able to grow his crop production projects because members of the community allowed him to rent their land. This is something he is very thankful for because

Rich Katt Legacy of Leadership Endowment Rich Katt, who retired from the Nebraska Department of Education in July 2018, was a leader for Nebraska FFA and agricultural education. He played a vital role in the development of leadership programs, which trickled down to many FFA members. The Rich Katt Legacy of Leadership Endowment will ensure Nebraska FFA members are ready to be successful in the agriculture industry because of the leadership training they receive, which is accessible and affordable.

We all have special memories in our FFA jacket, whether it be ourselves, family or friends. The blue jacket is the main symbol of FFA nationwide. The Nebraska FFA Foundation is proud to support students by providing the Blue Jackets. Bright Futures. program. Contributors could elect to be a part of the 2018 program by donating $100 per student. The FFA members must apply to be selected for an FFA jacket and, for many, this is one of their first experiences as an FFA member. In 2018, over 800 Nebraska FFA members applied through this program.

I Believe in the Future of Ag is focused on building financial capacity for the future of FFA in Nebraska. It gives us the opportunity to educate community members on the importance of agricultural education and FFA programs. The campaign spanned all of Nebraska and included two media partnerships with Husker Sports Properties and KRVN/Rural Radio Network. Industry sponsors donated $250,000 towards the campaign. Local FFA chapter donors donated over $412,000 for their chapters and $35,000 was awarded to participating chapters in matching funds. The top I Believe chapters for 2018-19 were McCool Junction, Ravenna, Elgin and O’Neill. The top chapters are based on receiving at least $500 in donations and participating in the sponsor engagment contest. Out of the 189 chapters, 133 chapters participated in the campaign. $412,000 was donated this past year directly to the chapters, but the funding and volunteer needs at the local level are always needed.
