FFA Intensified My Passion for Ag
I feel privileged and honored to serve as the 20172018 Nebraska FFA President. I grew up with a strong passion for agriculture, which intensified when I joined FFA. Through my participation in contests, activities, and community service projects, I discovered I wanted to be a state officer so that I could serve fellow students across Nebraska to intensify their passions.
In just three short months, I have been amazed and energized by the talents of student leaders throughout Nebraska. Your state officer team has been fortunate to attend several training workshops to help us prepare and taught us how to apply our skills to our year of service. We immediately used what we learned to plan the 2017 COLT conference, attended by nearly 1,000 FFA members. My biggest takeaway from that experience was this: the depth of talent in Nebraska is awesome. We also met and connected with fellow Nebraska FFA members at the NPower conference in late July. These experiences simply wouldn’t be possible without the support of donors and sponsors. You play a huge role in helping the future leaders of agriculture grow and develop their own passions for agriculture in our state. I speak on behalf of all Nebraska FFA members when I say, thank you.

I BELIEVE IN THE FUTURE OF AG CAMPAIGN UPDATE
Sponsorships Provide Programming, Project Support
September marks the official start of the eighth annual I Believe in the Future of Ag fundraising campaign. This campaign serves as an outlet for local FFA chapters to raise money for innovative projects in their classrooms, leadership programming, community service projects and field trips to advance agriculture education in their schools.
These corporate partners provide support for an educational campaign for FFA and agricultural education in Nebraska and support fundraising efforts at the local level. “Local FFA chapters and agriculture education chapters play an integral role in growing and developing future leaders in agriculture and in our communities. I see this campaign as a very important tool to help those chapters have the resources they need to grow leaders and build communities,” said Stacey Agnew, Nebraska FFA Foundation Executive Director.
This year, Aurora Cooperative, BigIron Auctions, Central Valley Ag, CPI, DEKALB®/Asgrow® and Verdesian committed $20,000 each to the campaign. Other sponsors, contributing $10,000 each, include: Bayer CropScience, CoBank, Country Partners Cooperative, Croplan by WinField United, GrainBridge, Farm Credit Services of America, Farmers Cooperative, Frontier Coop, Nebraska Farm Bureau Federation, Pinnacle Bank, Producers Livestock, Valley Irrigation.
Donors to the I Believe in the Future of Ag campaign choose which chapter they support. 100 percent of each local donation will be sent back to the designated chapter at the end of the campaign and a portion of the $35,000 challenge matching pool will be distributed to participating chapters.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: JEFF & DENISE McAFEE
Connecting Everyone to Ag Is Important to McAfee’s Jeff and Denise McAfee’s connections to agriculture are obvious and easy to explain. Their family farm operation near Leigh, Nebraska, consists of a cattle feedlot, a cow-calf herd, and corn, soybean and alfalfa crops. Both grew up on Nebraska farms. Jeff was an FFA chapter officer in the Allen FFA Chapter where he attended high school, and fostered his interest in soil science.
The McAfee’s daughter, Blythe, and son, Boone were also active FFA members during their time attending Leigh Community School. Both served as chapter officers, developed impressive public speaking skills and are now applying their skills in their agricultural careers. Blythe works for Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality and Boone works for Nebraska Corn Board. McAfee described the Leigh FFA chapter as a chapter kids grow up wanting to be in, including his own.
“It helped them in their public speaking, and offered them knowledge about parts of ag that our farm operation isn’t particularly involved in. We are still seeing the impact of what they learned,” he said. With all those layers of connection and appreciation for Nebraska FFA, the McAfee’s primary reason for supporting Nebraska FFA Foundation through its Leadership Gift program is somewhat unexpected: they want to create a connection for all Nebraska students (and adults) to Nebraska agriculture and feel that supporting FFA in suburban schools is one way to accomplish that.
“If people don’t have a connection to ag, they won’t have an interest or understanding of the policies and legislation that impact the ag sector,” Jeff said. “FFA provides the opportunity to educate students about the diversity of agriculture: it’s science, business, philosophy and economics all rolled into a way of life that is vital to feeding the world.”

5TH ANNUAL NEBRASKA FFA FOUNDATION TIRE AUCTION
Support Nebraska FFA Members on September 13 Titan Tire Corporation, a subsidiary of Titan International, Inc., will be hosting a tire auction for the Nebraska FFA Foundation at Husker Harvest Days on Wednesday, September 13, 2017. In its fifth year, the 2017 auction will include 76 tires auctioned on-site paired with an online-only auction for a John Deere Gator and a pair of LSW Extreme Floatation Tires.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: LORAN AND NANCY WACH
Wachs Pledge Gift of Corn to Honor FFA’s Importance Loran Wach’s high school FFA experiences in Hayes Center prepared him equally for two very different career paths. The 1979-80 state officer earned a degree in agriculture education from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. He completed a year of student teaching at Leigh, NE, but was presented with an opportunity to rent ground and ultimately, Loran went back to farming and ranching. Recognizing what an important role FFA had in his past, Loran and his wife Nancy pledged to support the Nebraska FFA Foundation with a Gift of Corn, which represents $1,000 per year for five years.

He also completed an SAE program focused on crops and livestock.
“The ag education courses I took in high school provided me with a background in livestock management and crop production,” Loran said.
The Wach’s also help support their local Hayes Center chapter through volunteerism, and supporting the school’s fundraising auction. 5
