Henderson, Nevada – Nebraska Section PGA Professionals and their Amateur partners teed off for the final round of the 28th Annual Vegas Classic presented by Callaway Golf & Vinnie Krikac State Farm Insurance Agency. It came down to the wire to decide the low professional title as Ted DiGiacomo, PGA of Golf Galaxy – Omaha got up and down out of the bunker on his 18th hole for birdie to clinch the title with 111 points in the modified stableford format. DiGiacomo’s round was back and forth coming home as he had two doublebogeys but he made some clutch putts that led to birdies on three of his final six holes. Justin Onken, PGA of Champions Run, Omaha, NE continued his solid play for the tournament by racking up 39 points but could not quite DiGiacomo as he finished one-point back at 110 points and go enough for solo second. Chris Wiemers, PGA of Happy Hollow Club, Omaha, NE had the round of the day earning 43 points and jumping all the way to third place at 109 points.

My passion to serve our Members burns each day and I hope I can assist you in whatever way you may need. My communication plan is simple…discuss anything you feel important at a time that works! Part of that plan will be monthly updates to each of you via your Section’s enews, special email communication, or however your leaders advise. My plan is to send these updates to you on the 20th of each month. I have also scheduled monthly Career Services updates to the ED’s and Officers in each Section with a summary of activities that may directly or indirectly affect the Section and you as a PGA Member. My plan is to send your leaders this report after each month. Our February Topic…2018 Compensation Survey. Having been in your shoes, I understand the hesitation to complete the yearly survey however, when you think about it, the time spent directly affects each one of us. The information we gather can, and will, assist you in some way. Whether you are re-negotiating a contract, hiring a Managerial position, doing a self-evaluation, or even getting a pulse on the going rate in a market, this information can be used as a tool for YOU. Please take time to complete the survey by going to PGA.ORG. The survey doesn’t take much time to complete. The survey provides valuable information to many Career Paths. The survey is confidential. You will help your Section reach its’ completion goals.

2017 Facility of the Year

Ashland Golf Club

Ashland Golf Club is honored to receive the Facility of the Year Award for the 2017 season. Improved playing conditions, a customer-first mindset, and the ability of our staff to truly love their work has led us to the receipt of this prestigious award. Our facility has grown rounds from under 16,000 in 2014 to 24,600 rounds in 2017 and tripled the amount of weddings held in comparison to 2015. New programming, such as NJGT Team Golf, has tied us closer to our local community and led to increased membership revenue. We are currently using very advanced, golf-related technology to ensure the best customer service experience possible. We believe making visible and consistent capital improvements and reinvesting in our product will be critical to our continued success. 10

Rules Quiz of the Month Valentine’s Day first became associated with romantic love in England in the 14th century when the tradition of courtly love flourished. Over the years, this day has evolved into a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance in many regions around the world, although it is not a public holiday in any country. In terms of greeting card sales, Valentine’s Day ranks second to Christmas; in terms of candy sales, it comes in third behind Easter and Halloween. To help you maintain that “lovin’ feeling,” here is a no-calorie Rules quiz for you to share with your sweetheart! 1. Your hole-tracking tee shot on a par-3 collides with a Valentine’s Day balloon drifting over the course, and your ball ends up out of bounds. The correct ruling is: (a) You may cancel and replay the stroke without penalty. (b) You may drop a ball below the point where you estimate that your ball struck the balloon with no penalty. (c) You may place a ball below the point where you estimate that your ball struck the balloon with no penalty. (d) You must return to the teeing ground under penalty of stroke and distance. 2. You ball ends up on top of a Valentine’s Day cupcake left in the rough by some children. The correct ruling is: (a) Since the cupcake is adhering to your ball, there is no relief without penalty and you must play the ball as it lies. (b) Without penalty, you may take relief by placing the ball as near as possible to the spot directly under the place where your ball came to rest on the cupcake. (c) Without penalty, you may take relief by dropping your ball as near as possible to the spot directly under the place where your ball came to rest on the cupcake. (d) You must eat the cupcake before taking relief from this precarious lie! 3. You ball trickles into a bunker, but is stopped on the downslope by some Valentine’s Day candy left in the bunker by some children. The correct ruling is: (a) You must play the ball as it lies. (b) You may remove the candy provided you can do so without causing your ball to move. (c) You may remove the candy, and if your ball moves, you must replace the ball. If necessary, you may press the ball into the sand to keep it from rolling down the slope and closer to the hole. (d) You may remove the candy, and if your ball moves, you must replace the ball no nearer the hole and without pressing the ball into the sand. If that is not possible, you may place the ball in the bunker at the nearest spot not nearer the hole where it can be placed at rest. If that is not possible, then you may proceed under the stroke-and-distance option of Rule 28 [Ball Unplayable] or drop the ball, under penalty of one stroke, outside the bunker, keeping the point where the ball lay directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped.

Answers: 1. (d) According to the Definition of “Outside Agency,” wind is not an outside agency. However, Decision 18-1/6 [Ball at Rest Moved by Blowing Tumbleweed] clarifies that something being blown across the course by wind is an outside agency. Therefore, the balloon is an outside agency, and Rule 19-1 [Ball in Motion Deflected or Stopped by Outside Agency] applies. In part, this Rule states, “If a player’s ball in motion is accidentally deflected or stopped by any outside agency, it is a rub of the green, there is no penalty and the ball must be played as it lies ….” In this case, since your ball came to rest out of bounds, Rule 27-1b [Ball Out of Bounds] also applies so you must play a ball, under penalty of one stroke, as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played. 2. (c) The Definition of “Obstruction” states, in part, “An “obstruction” is anything artificial … [and] is a movable obstruction if it may be moved without unreasonable effort, without unduly delaying play and without causing damage.” Given that the cupcake is a movable obstruction, Rule 24-1b [Movable Obstruction] applies since your ball came to rest on top of the cupcake. This Rule advises, “If the ball lies in or on the obstruction, the ball may be lifted and the obstruction removed. The ball must through the green or in a hazard be dropped … as near as possible to the spot directly under the place where the ball lay in or on the obstruction, but not nearer the hole.” 3. (d) See Rule 20-3d [Placing and Replacing: Ball Fails to Come to Rest on Spot] and Decision 20-3d/2 [Ball in Bunker Moves Closer to Hole When Obstruction Removed and Ball Will Not Remain at Rest When Replaced; All Other Parts of Bunker Are Nearer the Hole].

Rules Quiz of the Month Spring thaws and rains may soon be coming to your neck of the woods. Those conditions might dampen your spirts, so here’s a True/False quiz to whet your appetite for increasing your Rules knowledge regarding casual water. In order to get all the correct answers, you may need to wade deep into your Decisions Book! 1. You may take relief without penalty if there is interference to the lie of your ball, your stance, or the area of your intended swing by a puddle of water within a water hazard. 2. Water that overflows and extends beyond the margin of a water hazard is considered to be casual water. 3. With your ball situated just in bounds, you may take relief without penalty from a puddle of water that is out of bounds if the puddle interferes with your stance. 4. If you are unable to find your ball that you know came to rest in a large pool of casual water in the fairway, you must proceed under penalty of stroke and distance. 5. With your ball just off the green, you are entitled to relief from a puddle of casual water on the putting green that intervenes on your line of play. 6. There is no penalty if your club touches a puddle of water in a bunker so long as you do not ground your club prior to making your stroke. 7. If there happens to be some unmelted snow on your line of putt, you may take relief for casual water. 8. Soft or mushy earth is considered to be casual water only if water is visible on the surface before or after you take your stance.

Answers: 1. False The Definition of “Casual Water” states, in part, “”Casual water” is any temporary accumulation of water on the course that is not in a water hazard…” [Emphasis added]. Thus, any water within the margin of a water hazard is part of the water hazard, relief for which is available only by incurring a one-stroke penalty pursuant to Rule 26 [Water Hazards]. 2. True See the Definition of “Casual Water” and Decision 25/2 [Overflow from Water Hazard]. 3. False The Definition of “Casual Water” states, in part, “”Casual water” is any temporary accumulation of water on the course….” [Emphasis added]. As the puddle of water is out of bounds, it is not casual water. Therefore, you must either play the ball with your stance in the water, or deem your ball unplayable and incur a one-stroke penalty under Rule 28 [Ball Unplayable]. 4. False Rule 25 [Abnormal Ground Conditions …] is the applicable Rule given that the Definition of “Abnormal Ground Conditions” indicates that casual water is an abnormal ground condition. Rule 25-1c [Ball in Abnormal Ground Condition Not Found] allows you to take relief without penalty by deeming the ball to be lying at the spot where the ball last crossed the outermost limits of the casual water. See also Decision 25-1c/1.5 [Clarification of Point Where Ball “Last Crossed Outermost Limits of” Abnormal Ground Condition]. 5. False Rule 25-1a [Abnormal Ground Conditions: Interference] states, in part, “If the player’s ball lies on the putting green, interference also occurs if an abnormal ground condition on the putting green intervenes on his line of putt. Otherwise, intervention on the line of play is not, of itself, interference under this Rule.” 6. True See Decision 13-4/7 [Touching Casual Water in Bunker with Club] which states, “The player incurs no penalty as he did not touch the ground in the bunker with his club prior to making his stroke ….” See also Rule 13-4 [Ball in Hazard; Prohibited Actions]. 7. True According to the Definition of “Casual Water,” snow is either casual water or loose impediments at the option of the player. 8. True The Definition of “Casual Water” states, in part, “”Casual water” is any temporary accumulation of water on the course that is not in a water hazard and is visible before or after the player takes his stance.” [Emphasis added].
