There are issues that come together simply, and then there are issues that feel like a dream you never want to wake from. This is one of those.

From the very first pages, we invite you into a world where fashion and art converge. Our bridal fashion feature (page 44) is unlike anything we’ve produced before — breathtaking gowns inspired by the grace of ballet, brought to life by a professional ballerina whose every pose seems to defy gravity. Watching her move through these looks reminded us why bridal fashion, at its best, is more than clothing. It is transformation.

Equally breathtaking is our floral feature (page 60), where gifted floral designers from across the state have pushed the boundaries of the bouquet into pure sculptural art. These aren’t arrangements — they are statements, each one telling a story as personal and singular as the brides who will carry them.

For this issue’s featured wedding (page 66), we journeyed to the heart of Detroit, where David & Jack celebrated their love at the magnificent Shinola Hotel. Warm, soulful, and filled with sparkling moments, it was the kind of wedding that reminds you Detroit has a romantic soul all its own.

With a background in fine arts, photographer Jeffrey Lewis Bennett of metro Detroitbased JLB Wedding Photography has carved out a niche for creating images that are “influenced by design principles, architecture, and good cinematography.”

“I think my favorite shots have some structure to them,” says Bennett, who has been photographing weddings since 2003. “It’s like I’m laying out print in a magazine. I like visual hierarchy. I like incorporating architecture and having the architecture be as big of a star in the photo as the couple.

“I’m trying to tell a story in the confines of the frame,” he says.

While photography was always a hobby Bennett was passionate about (“I spent a lot of time in the darkroom in college,” he says), “I didn’t think people would pay me money to do it. The first weddings I shot were for friends.” After graduating from college, Bennett worked as a graphic designer and did photography on the side.

In 2008, a couple hired him to shoot their wedding — a wedding he says prompted him to pursue photography full-time. “They said to me, ‘We want you to come and be creative and not feel like you have to constrain yourself to what the industry might want or what the world expects wedding photography to be.’ That experience changed everything for me. Not long after, I left my day job.”

Couples searching for creative shots are often drawn to Bennett’s artistic approach. He offers all his couples teaser reels for Instagram, along with animated GIFs. “There is a healthy balance of fun and candid as well as

moments of real emotion in the work,” he says. “If there’s one thing that really sets me apart, it’s that I think I have a really great understanding of how to use light to make the most dramatic image possible.”

His incredible talent is what prompted a couple last summer to request that he shoot some of their wedding-day photos underwater. “I had some healthy skepticism,” Bennett says. “But they were serious… I had never done underwater photography at a wedding, so it was a learning experience for me.”

While the couple had requested that the shots be taken at the lake where they lived, and more specifically, on their wedding day, lake conditions and logistics weren’t ideal.

They decided to go with Torch Lake in Northern Michigan’s Antrim County, an inland lake known for its Caribbean-blue waters. “We did the underwater photos about a month after their wedding. But they did follow through with getting in their lake on their wedding day,” Bennett says with a laugh. “I hopped on a paddle boat with the groom’s brother, and we went out in the lake in front of a pier with the entire reception and all their guests in the background. They then ran off the pier and into the lake … it was awesome and a real nice way to bookend the coverage of their wedding.”

The results of the underwater photography? “A big success,” Bennett says. “There’s something about the weightlessness that it’s almost like time is still or that you’re floating in space. It looks like a dream instead of reality.”

He adds, “There are also interesting lines of light that you wouldn’t get unless you were underwater.”

For those considering underwater shots for their wedding, Bennett suggests “the clearest water possible with a bright bottom. Torch Lake offers that in Michigan, but it’s probably easier to do this in the Caribbean.”

While Bennett is based in Michigan, he often travels across the country for weddings and engagement shoots. Some of his favorite projects involve shooting couples on adventures — whether

that’s exploring a city like New York or hiking a geological wonder like Horseshoe Bend in Arizona.

“The task is that the three of us are going to try and see as much as possible in one day, and I’m

photographing them along the way,” Bennett says. “I find those jobs to be incredible and perfect.”

In a 450-square-foot storefront in Hamtramck, Forever Club is reimagining the wedding day — one Elvis song, coney dog, and perfectly timed “I Do” at a time.

Founded by hospitality veterans Grace Moses and her husband, Ray, the venue channels the playful spirit of a Las Vegas chapel with a distinctly Detroit edge: retro, a little irreverent, and deeply intentional. “You can find it, book it, pay for it, be done with it,” Moses says. “There are no other fees coming. Everything is thought through for you.”

That simplicity is hard-won. When the couple planned their own wedding more than a decade ago, their venue fell through less than a month before the big day, forcing them to scramble. The experience planted a seed: what if getting married could be joyful — and easy?

Forever Club is their answer. The all-inclusive model covers everything from the officiant and florals to music and décor, allowing couples to focus less on logistics and more on the moment. Some book a year in advance; others call on a Wednesday requesting a Saturday ceremony. Both work.

The concept also reflects a broader cultural shift. “I don’t know if the industry has changed as much as what people want out of it,” Moses says. Post-pandemic, couples are prioritizing time, intimacy, and authenticity over scale. At Forever Club, that might look like 12 guests gathered close, rather than 120 spread thin.

And then there’s the setting. Hamtramck’s creative, anything-goes energy makes it an ideal backdrop for a wedding that breaks from tradition. Couples often turn their ceremony into a full-day experience: champagne toasts followed by dive bars, late-night coneys, or even matching tattoos down the street.

That spirit carries into the details, including the option to add “wedding weenies” — a coney cart parked just outside for a celebratory bite. Plans for a small patio are also in the works to expand the indoor-outdoor flow.

For Moses, it all comes back to accessibility. “You don’t need a big budget to have a beautiful, memorable day,” she says. “Just show up, look cute, be excited, get married.”

In other words, all the fun, without the fuss.

F or the last 10 years, SuitShop has been dedicated to proving that the suiting industry could be done better. Childhood best friends and Michigan natives Jeanne Foley and Diana Ganz launched the brand in 2016, and since then, it has established itself as a resource for stylish, high-quality suits for men, women, nonbinary individuals, and children starting under $200.

“You can own a great suit or tux, one that fits just right and feels great on, for less than the cost of renting one,” Foley says. “It’s something that customers are constantly surprised by, and it’s been at the center of our mission from day one.”

Here, we chat with Foley to learn how SuitShop outfits the entire wedding party in looks they’ll love — and re-wear — for years to come.

What was the driving force behind the creation of SuitShop?

It started with my own wedding in 2013. We went with the standard attire option at the time to outfit the groomsmen — rental tuxedos — only to find that they were unreasonably priced for what you get, didn’t fit well for any of the guys, and had a frustrating process. Even after the wedding, I kept

thinking there had to be an alternative. I couldn’t shake the idea of creating a wedding suit option that didn’t cost more than rentals but gave higher value, fit perfectly for any body type, and offered an easy, organized experience.

With my background in fashion design, it occurred to me that I really could make that happen. I called my childhood best friend, Diana Ganz — an MIT Sloan School of Business graduate and savvy, experienced executive — to bring it to life. Now, SuitShop makes affordable, stylish, and well-fitting suits and tuxedos a reality for everything from wedding groups to prom, business meetings, and beyond.

How does inclusivity play a role at SuitShop, from the foundation of the brand and looking forward to the future?

Since so much of the inspiration behind creating SuitShop stemmed from ensuring a truly great fit at an accessible price point, inclusivity has been stitched into who we are from the beginning.

Thinking about fit for groups of groomsmen specifically — our first and largest audience — we knew it was imperative to offer sizes that cater to a wide range of people, heights, and body types. We offer an industryleading size range: 30 to 64 in jackets for men, and 00 to 28 for women, plus multiple fit types and lengths. We sell suits with jackets and pants sized separately rather than as predetermined sets, so you can mix and match for your perfect, individualized fit.

We’re the first and only brand of our kind with a fully coordinating collection for men, women, nonbinary individuals, and kids. And we plan to only continue to expand in that direction with sizing, fit types, and styles to include everyone for any celebration or moment.

What are some suiting trends we should look for this wedding season?

I’m excited to see that there’s a strong and renewed interest in the classics and neutrals. Black and tan suits and classic tuxedos are extremely popular throughout the rest of the year. And other neutrals, too, are starting to gain traction. Rich browns along with warm sand, dusty latte, and earthy olive are all starting to boom. These tones lend a beautiful, grounded feel to any wedding party, and they’re easy to style without being too predictable.

Texture is becoming as important as color, too. That trend towards texture is what inspired our new Linen-Look collection: suits that give that relaxed, comfortable look and feel without the instant wrinkles and sagging, thanks to a revolutionized performance fabric. With SuitShop’s Linen-Look suits, the look stays both airy and polished through the whole day, from the ceremony to the last song. Tweeds and velvets, too, speak to this trend and are getting some real traction at SuitShop. We love the depth that all the texture adds to the big day.

The bigger shift I’m loving is how couples are thinking about coordination over uniformity. More wedding parties are opting to outfit everyone in the same color family rather than in one specific color. This style allows room for individual expression or just extra visual interest within the attire. And it helps ensure that everyone gets a

suit that feels like them, a look that they’ll reach for again — that’s always been SuitShop’s north star.

What does it mean to you that SuitShop is an integral part of so many wedding celebrations?

Really, it means so much. A wedding is one of the most significant days in a person’s life, and being trusted to be part of that milestone feels like a huge honor. Outfitting the wedding party, helping everyone stay comfortable, getting the groom or newlywed feeling their best, or ensuring the style in cherished wedding photos is exactly what a couple hoped for — it’s something we don’t take lightly.

With 4theluvofMatcha, Megan Rragami brings a curated matcha bar experience to weddings, showers, and other special events

Atwo-hour wait time started it all for Megan Rragami, the owner and founder of 4theluvofMatcha.

Launched in summer 2025, 4theluvofMatcha is a boutique mobile bar service that offers ceremonial-grade Japanese matcha and perfectly curated experiences for events like weddings, bridal showers, birthdays, and corporate gatherings throughout Michigan. You can even find her pop-ups at local gyms, Pilates studios, and med spas.

Customization is a priority for Rragami, who offers her clients the ability to customize cups, labels, and menus to match an event’s aesthetic. “It makes each event unique,” she says.

Her house-made syrups, which are free of added sugars, can also be fully tailored to a theme. Popular flavors include banana pudding, strawberry, blueberry, and vanilla. “I do switch the menu monthly,” she notes. “It gives people a lot more variety and options.”

Ceremonial-grade Japanese matcha, known for its vibrant hue, is created from “the youngest, most tender green tea leaves, usually shade grown, and it’s ground super finely,” Rragami says. She offers her clients only the highest quality, sourcing her matcha from Uji, Japan, often referred to as the birthplace of

matcha. Matcha also contains half the caffeine of a cup of coffee, Rragami says.

“It’s like a slow release of energy throughout the day,” she says. “It doesn't make you crash, which is what I liked and why I started drinking it.”

Her love of matcha began during the COVID pandemic when she discovered the popular drink on TikTok. She began

experimenting at home to craft her now-favorite drink. Fast forward to last summer, and Rragami found herself waiting for hours in a line to order matcha at a pop-up in Detroit, only to find out it wasn’t very good.

“In my head, I was like, ‘Wow, if I waited two hours in line, then I feel like anybody would for a good product.’ I texted my fiancé and told him I was going to start

a business,” she says.

With a bachelor’s degree in human resource development and a minor in marketing from Oakland University, Rragami had always thought her career would follow a more corporate path. Matcha changed that.

Following the pop-up, she went home and created an Instagram profile under the name 4theluvofMatcha. With no photos or posts, Rragami woke up the next morning to a message from an influencer seeking her to work a birthday event — in two weeks. Requirements included a mobile cart and the ability to serve about 150 people. She said yes and called her fiancé. “I need you to build me a cart,” she told him.

He did, and the event proved beyond successful with Rragami selling out of her entire stock.

“Ever since, I've been completely booked month after month. It was something that was such a small idea that I thought wasn't going to go anywhere, and now it’s turned into a full-time gig,” she says.

What’s next for Rragami? “I’m releasing coffee to my cart,” she says. “I’ve been perfecting the craft of making different lattes, and I'm super excited to drop it within the next few months.”

Kristen Griffith-VanderYacht shares the art of floral design at Planterra Conservatory

Kristen GriffithVanderYacht has had a wildly varied life. Born and raised in Detroit, he left at a young age and has since lived on a bus, traveled across the U.S. while performing in the musical Rent, and has lived briefly in New York, Boston, London, and Seattle — where he founded his fantastically successful floral design business, Wild Bloom. He also served as head judge on the Netflix show The Big Flower Fight, where his blend of on-point criticism and warm hospitality charmed viewers. Griffith-

VanderYacht’s floral designs have been featured in Better Homes & Gardens, Vogue, O Magazine, and Martha Stewart Weddings, and he frequently makes guest appearances on television shows, including The Drew Barrymore Show and Good Morning America. Harper’s Bazaar named him as one of the top floral designers in the world.

In January 2025, he made his triumphant return to the area, serving as Floral Director at Planterra Conservatory in West Bloomfield.

At Planterra, he teaches workshops, consults with business clients, and works with couples getting married at the conservatory. Designing for weddings brings Griffith-VanderYacht a special joy. “The romance of a couple’s story is really the most magical part in our relationships,” he says. “I love being part of that day and helping to tell their story through flowers.”

Meeting with new clients, he says, is an adventure in discovery. “It starts with establishing a floral vocabulary. Sometimes it’s just a feeling, sometimes it’s a vibe,” he says. From there, he works with the couple to establish a “floral education so that they have the vocabulary to properly articulate, speculate, and express what their dreams are.”

Having spent more than a decade and a half in the floral design business, GriffithVanderYacht has seen his share of missteps from a wedding design perspective. His biggest takeaway? “Pinterest is a lie,” he says. He warns couples that “most Americans cannot afford to spend $200,000 on their flowers. They often come

to me with these extremely unrealistic expectations for their budget.”

That said, GriffithVanderYacht is dedicated to crafting an unforgettable floral experience for his clients, no matter their budget. “As a florist,” he says, “my job is to make your flowers look as beautiful as they can on that day.” Sometimes that means making a few last-minute adjustments; after all, he says, “Floral design is an art, not a science. We also have to be listening to nature at the same time. Sometimes the flowers say, ‘I want to go this way. I want to face that way. I want to open and unfurl this way.’”

For Griffith-VanderYacht, the joy of working on wedding designs is in sharing — and shaping — the story of a couple’s first moments in marriage. “Guests never remember the food. But time and time again, they always remember the ambiance of the day. They remember the décor,” he says.

“If you have gorgeous flowers, transformative flowers,” he says, “the guests always remember.”

Love Lettering by Erin started as a passion project. Erin Attruia originally set out to create elevated, luxurious signage for the weddings of close family and friends, but it has since blossomed into a full-service stationery and signage business for weddings and events.

“I focus on creating intentional designs from start to finish,” Attruia explains. “The couples I work with really love a cohesive design experience that starts with the first impression their guests get with invitations and is carried through all the way to their dayof signage and stationery.”

With a focus on luxury, elegance, and sophistication, Attruia thoughtfully crafts save-the-dates, invitations, day-of paper goods, and signage using a variety of methods like digital printing, letterpress, and foiling. While all of Love Lettering’s services are offered à la carte, Attruia collaborates with couples to define their overall vision and

venue aesthetic, and to determine the full scope of needs. Most often, invitations serve as the foundation of the overall design, and elements are then carried through to the dayof pieces, creating a seamless and personal experience. “Over the years, I’ve started offering rentals of some of the signage pieces I love that can be easily customized for couples,” Attruia says. “It’s really fun to make a statement with something like a seating chart and elevate the guest experience.”

Thanks to Attruia’s unique skill set, Love Lettering has had the opportunity to create a wide range of designs and experiences for couples. From a wedding with soft pastels and florals that translated into scalloped and layered stationery items, to signature drink signage created on model sailboats — the possibilities are endless. “I want my couples to know that stationery is more than just relaying information,” Attruia says. “It is really setting the tone for their entire wedding and is the first impression their guests will see. The Rare Plant Fairy

What began as a small apartment hobby has grown into a global plant phenomenon, as Jocelyn Ho cultivates rare species — and a thriving community of collectors

Jocelyn Ho’s path into rare plants began almost by accident. After relocating from Hong Kong to Detroit with her new husband, Ho, a speech pathologist at the time, found herself waiting for her green card — and filling the time with plants. A south-facing window overlooking the Detroit River offered ideal light, and her collection of greenery quickly outgrew its space. “My husband started to complain about how many I had,” she says with a laugh.

One weekend, hoping to clear space, she listed a couple of plants on Facebook Marketplace and sold them for more than $1,000. In that moment, the idea took root. “I realized there might be a business in this,” she says.

She soon launched what would become Rare Plant Fairy — a name inspired by her natural gift for cultivating even the most elusive varieties. “I didn’t start with rare plants,” Ho says, explaining that her collection began with approachable, beginner species before evolving into more uncommon finds. Backed by experience in biology and botany, she has long been drawn to ecology, though it wasn’t until later that she recognized the transformative role plants can play indoors — not only aesthetically, but also in supporting overall well-being.

What began as a small operation in her Detroit apartment quickly grew into a thriving facility with more than 30 employees, all dedicated to cultivating and sharing the beauty of rare plants. Today, Rare Plant Fairy ships to collectors and enthusiasts around the world, with a steadily expanding following fueled by social media, where Ho and her team host weekly live sessions to showcase their latest offerings.

Looking ahead, Ho is focused on expanding her tissue-culture program and cultivating the elusive Ghost Orchid — an endangered species with fewer than 100 specimans left in the wild. Still in the research phase, the effort reflects both ambition and purpose. “If we can help bring this orchid back from near extinction, it would be incredible,” she says.

From finding the perfect venue to an unforgettable night on the dance floor, Jack and David Chase wouldn’t change a thing about their wedding celebration

No notes: two words to describe the wedding of Jack and David Chase, who married at the Shinola Hotel in downtown Detroit on September 7, 2024. They said “I do” surrounded by 150 of their closest family and friends — some of whom traveled from outside the country to celebrate their big day. Detroit was not initially their top pick for a wedding location. Jack grew up in Grosse Pointe Farms, and David grew up in Iowa, but the couple

resides in Chicago. Upon their engagement, it seemed to make the most sense to wed there, but a trip to Detroit almost immediately changed their plans.

“We were in Detroit for an unrelated reason, and we were like, ‘You know what, let’s go see Shinola,’” Jack recalls. “The only place we ever toured in Detroit was Shinola Hotel, and we walked in, we saw it, and we looked at each other like, ‘Oh, maybe we’re getting married in Detroit.’”

After visiting somewhere between 10 and 20 additional venues in Chicago, nothing lived up to the feeling they got when they toured the Shinola. With that, their decision was made.

From there, wedding planning began. “We knew that the venue spoke for itself, and we’re not over-thetop people, so we kept things really simple,” David says. They prioritized spending more on elements that mattered most to them and chose more cost-effective options for vendors or items of lower importance. Overall, they maintained a “go with the flow” mentality from early planning stages through the big day. “Jack and I are very much people like, ‘What happens, happens,’” David says. “If it’s a total disaster, then it’s a funny memory.”

They spent the wedding morning getting ready separately and spending time with their respective families and friends. Afterward, they came together for a first look where they gifted each other — and their best men — Shinola watches and shared a drink of Eagle Rare bourbon purchased at their joint bachelor party. It was one of the very few solo moments, as they wanted to spend most of the day with their guests.

“A lot of couples are like, ‘We need time to ourselves,’ but we didn’t really have that mentality,”

David says. “All of our friends and family flew in from all over the world, truly — my brother from France and friends from Spain. We wanted to spend time with them, so we kept the personal time to a minimum.”

Instead of a larger wedding party, Jack and David opted to have one best man each. Even with the small wedding party, they stayed close to their friends by sitting with them at the reception, at a long table running down the middle of the room.

The evening sparkled with many memorable moments, including a rose petal toss (which resulted in

David accidentally getting a handful of them thrown into his mouth), their first dance to “Butterflies” by Kacey Musgraves sung by Jack’s cousin, and a dazzling tuxedo change for the couple, going from traditional black tuxes for the ceremony to Jack’s green tux and David’s white tux for the reception. Another special moment was between David and his father, who has since passed away, but at the time had just started chemotherapy treatment. “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond was “their song,” and when it started playing, Jack went and found David’s dad, who had stepped away from the

noise of the reception. When Jack brought him into the room, David’s dad lit up, and they were able to celebrate together. “That was a special moment we will always remember,” says David.

So, what exactly constitutes a “no notes” wedding for Jack and David?

“I love saying that it’s a ‘no notes’ wedding because I’m not open to feedback,” Jack says. “There are no notes; there’s nothing you can say to me that would change what we did. It was absolutely perfect.”

“Yeah, I would agree with all that,” David says. “There’s nothing I would change.”

Located on 27 beautiful acres, Zingerman’s Cornman Farms and its venues were restored from their 1834 foundations with the most discerning guests in mind. Featuring a beautiful exhibition kitchen, chef’s garden, a classic farmhouse, and four-season barn, guests can enjoy the beauty of the countryside just minutes from downtown Ann Arbor.

Our team will work with you to create a custom experience that’s perfectly suited to your vision. Cornman Farms offers inclusive wedding packages for intimate celebrations for four to 75 guests. We’re experts at planning and hosting events of all kinds — especially if they involve gathering around fantastic, farm-to-table food. That’s exactly why Chef

Kieron Hales reimagined this historic property as an event venue with an emphasis on excellent food. The way we see it, nothing brings a family, a team, or community together like good food.

The Ballroom @ CityFlatsHotel

Our venue is different from the rest because we are a one-stop-shop for couples. CityFlatsHotel is a boutique hotel centrally located in downtown Grand Rapids, within walking distance of all the city’s most popular attractions. Our Ballroom Suite and hotel rooms are available for the wedding party to get ready in, while they enjoy in-house breakfast, lunch, or mimosas. We also have the Parlour @ CityFlatsHotel, our hair and makeup salon that specializes in bridal styling. Couples can have their ceremony in the Ballroom, head to Events @ CityFlatsHotel — our modern, smaller-sized venue — for cocktail hour, and then return to the Ballroom for the reception. Our unique space consists of three outside decks, two enclosed floors, and a pilot house that are fully climate controlled. One of the most important things you can do to avoid stress during your wedding weekend is to make a wedding timeline. Providing a timeline for your wedding party, vendors, and guests will keep everyone on the same schedule. It might sound like overkill, but including every detail will make sure there is zero confusion about what is happening, when it’s happening, and where everyone is expected to be throughout the celebration. Here is a basic guide for what you will be doing that day and how long to plan for each.

1BREAKFAST

30 minutes

Remember, this is going to be a long day. Eat a breakfast with lots of protein — think eggs, bacon, sausage, Greek yogurt, protein shakes, cottage cheese, or peanut butter toast. Give your body what it needs to make it through this marathon day!

2GETTING READY

2 hours

Allocate time for ALL the fun stuff: hair, makeup, dance party, champagne, robe wearing, getting dressed, etc. Note: gettingready photos will be included in this time block.

3SOLO PORTRAITS

30 minutes

This is when you and your fiancé will get your portraits done with your photographer, individually.

4FIRST LOOKS

30 minutes

Whether you’re doing this as a couple or with your wedding party, parents, etc., this should give the photographer plenty of time to get the perfect first-look photo!

5WEDDING PARTY PHOTOS

30 to 60 minutes

These shots will be of your wedding party, of course. But you can also get shots with your parents, kids, and other important people involved in your day. These can also be done after the ceremony if you’re not doing a first look with your fiancé.

6TRAVEL TIME

30+ minutes

If you are getting ready at your ceremony venue, disregard this. If you are traveling, be sure to leave enough time to account for traffic. You also need to plan for travel from the ceremony to the reception if they aren’t at the same venue.

7CEREMONY

30 to 60 minutes

This will depend on the type of ceremony you are having. Many ceremonies that follow traditional religious formats tend to be longer (around an hour), but most tend to wrap up right around the 30-minute mark.

8COCKTAIL HOUR

60 minutes

I mean, it’s called cocktail hour, so… Seriously though, this is about right unless your guests can turn happy hour into several hours!

9ENTRANCES + CAKE CUTTING

15 minutes

Most likely you will have your entire wedding party introduced before you. Then it’s time for your grand entrance as a married couple! Many couples also choose to cut their cake at this time.

10WELCOME TOAST + BLESSING

15 minutes

Since all eyes are already on you, now is the perfect time to take a moment to welcome your guests and thank everyone for joining you on your wedding day. As this speech will be a transition to dinner, it’s also the perfect time to include a blessing before you commence the meal, depending on your faith.

11DINNER + SPEECHES

60 minutes

Immediately following the welcome speech, your dinner service can begin. Between courses is when the speeches should take place. Typically, speeches are given by the best man, maid of honor, and father of the bride.

12SPECIAL DANCES

10 minutes

After the meal is complete, make your way to the dance floor for your first dance as a married couple. Then it’s time to bring your parents to center stage. You know the drill here — dance with your parents and cue the tears.

13DANCING 2+ hours

Since you’re already on the dance floor, let’s get the party started! Encourage your guests to join you as your DJ or band shifts into more upbeat music. If you have a second outfit for your reception, now is the time to go change!

14GRAND EXIT

10 minutes

As you are saying your goodbyes, have your coordinator or your emcee instruct your guests to head to the exit to see you and your new spouse off!

You’re Finally Married!

So, how do you change your name?

Wondering how to change your name after the wedding? Ready to start ordering ALL the things with your new monogram? The following step-by-step guide is intended to help you navigate getting your name changed here in Michigan. Our goal is for you to have this over and done with for good once you finish this list.

1PURCHASE CERTIFIED COPIES OF YOUR MARRIAGE LICENSE IN ADVANCE

These documents are the most important part; so important that you can’t move on to step two without them. Do this when you go to apply for your license.

2UPDATE YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY CARD

You can either apply for a new social security card by mail or in person at your local Social Security office. If you plan on going to the Social Security office in person, you can save yourself some time by filling out an application

online for a social security card in advance. While on their website, be sure to find out what documents you will need to bring with you.

3GET YOUR NEW DRIVER’S LICENSE

Updating your driver’s license with a new name must be done in person. In Michigan, you will need to have your name updated on your license and take a new photograph, as well as pay the renewal fee. Michigan’s Secretary of State offices accept appointments; you can make yours online. While you are on the site making your appointment, be sure to see which documents you will need to bring with you.

4GET A NEW PASSPORT + TRAVEL DOCUMENTS

Changing your name on your passport is considered a correction. If your passport was issued less than a year ago, you’ll be able to have the correction made without paying a fee. However, if you’ve had your current passport for a year or more, there will be a fee. While all passport changes must be applied for by mail, the U.S. Department of State has a convenient tool on their website that will help you fill out the change form. While you are on the site, be sure to see which documents you will need to send to the National Passport Processing Center.

5CHANGE THE NAME ON YOUR BANK ACCOUNTS

As soon as your identification has been updated with your new name, head to your local bank branch to update the information on your bank accounts. Note that most banks require that these changes be made in person. We recommend you call ahead to see which documents you will need to bring with you.

6CHANGE THE NAME ON YOUR CREDIT CARDS

The process for changing your name on your credit cards will vary by institution. Call your credit card company directly to see what their procedures are. You can usually find the customer service number on the back of your credit card.

7PROVIDE YOUR NEW NAME AND BANKING INFORMATION TO YOUR EMPLOYER

Now that your ID and bank accounts match, contact your company’s Human Resources office or payroll processor to provide your new information as soon as possible. This way your checks will be issued with the correct name, and direct deposits will be processed correctly and — most important — swiftly!

8UPDATE YOUR INSURANCE INFORMATION

Whether you’re combining insurance policies or are simply updating the information on your own policy, this is a major change you need to make as soon as possible to ensure you’re covered in the event of a claim. You will need a copy of your marriage license to move this along.

If you’re insured through your employer, go through human resources or the insurance representative to find the appropriate forms and contact information.

Planning to combine your coverage? Make these changes all at once. Marriage is considered a major life event, so you also have the opportunity to change your health care coverage — even if it isn’t an enrollment period. For auto and home insurance, adding an additional vehicle or a new home to your policy could result in some great savings if you combine multiple policies with the same company.

9UPDATE YOUR MORTGAGE, RENT, AND UTILITY COMPANIES

With your new name and new payment information in hand, it’s time to update the payment information for your mortgage or rent, and your utility companies. Most can be easily updated online in your account portal or on the phone, and should be as simple as typing in your new last name and entering your new credit card number or bank routing information.

If you’re at this step, then you’re getting married REALLY soon — within 33 days to be exact, since that’s how long you’ll have once you apply for your marriage license! Here’s a step-by-step guide for getting your marriage license in the state of Michigan:

1SET DATE

Make sure you know your date before applying!

2 APPLY

You can apply online or in person. Contact information for every county clerk’s office in Michigan can be found by scanning the QR code below.

3 SECURITY NUMBERS

SOCIAL

You will need to provide social security numbers for both applicants. Applicants without a social security number must provide a legal explanation in person at the county clerk’s office.

4 PROOF OF AGE

Government-issued birth certificates and current driver’s licenses or state IDs (copies sufficient) are required for both applicants. Documents must be in English.

5 RESIDENCE

At least one applicant must be a resident of the county in which you are to be married. If both parties are from out of state, but getting married in Michigan, they must apply for their license in the county where their ceremony will take place. Proof of address is required with either a valid driver’s license or state ID.

6 FEE

The fee is $20 for Michigan residents and $30 for out-of-state applicants.

7 PICK UP

License must be picked up in person — with all required documents — at the county clerk’s office no sooner than 3 days after submitting your application.
