She is the third generation of the Manheim family of antiquarians. Her grandfather, Bernard Manheim, emigrated from Austria to New Orleans at the turn of the last century, opening an antique gallery and small cabinet shop at 409 Royal, Manheim Galleries, in 1919. Her father, Abe Manheim, joined Bernard in the family business. As a child of nine, Ida began accompanying her father on European buying trips; she would join the firm fulltime as a young woman. The Manheim family, through Manheim Galleries and later Ida Manheim Antiques, have catered to an international following of discriminating buyers for over 100 years.
