Welcome to today’s performance! We could not be here without the tenacity and creativity of NDI New Mexico’s excellent staff; the dedication and effort of our talented students; and the commitment and support of our public partners and donors. This has been another year of uncertainty and once again, the NDI New Mexico community has worked together to rise above the challenges in support of children’s health, development, and success.

NDI New Mexico teaches children to Work Hard, Do Their Best, Never Give Up, and Be Healthy. Applied with energy, these skills help young people experience excellence on stage, in the classroom, and throughout life. For the past 27 years, this powerful message has positively impacted nearly 150,000 youth and is more critical today than ever.

One of the lessons that we take from this year is the importance of growing and responding to the evolving needs of our children, families, and community. We believe that we have a responsibility to be reflective of the many children we serve and to serve them in the most inclusive, accessible, and effective ways possible. NDI New Mexico is working diligently to provide the trained teaching staff and most effective programs to serve the next generation of children in our state, helping them to thrive and succeed in meaningful ways.

Helping children develop the tools they need to thrive!

One of the truly unique aspects of NDI New Mexico is its instructional approach: the methods, traditions, and philosophies that provide children with not only an education in dance but also the tools they need to thrive in all aspects of life.

Commonly referred to as the “whole child” approach to education, this methodology has been central to NDI New Mexico since it was first developed by NDI New Mexico’s co-founder, Jacques d’Amboise.

“Jacques had a natural way of teaching that was incredibly motivational and engaging for children, and challenged them to meet high expectations,” said NDI New Mexico Artistic Director Liz Salganek.

“He took complex dance movements and broke them down into discrete elements that children could learn, rehearse and ultimately perform at very high levels, and inspired them every step of the way through vivid imagination and a wry sense of humor.”

Weaving together what she learned from Jacques with her own creative contributions and curriculum development, Catherine wrote the Teaching Excellence® Manual. This has been a foundational tool to train instructors and ensure that children participating in the program over the decades received the training, support, attention, and high expectations that helped them thrive long after they left NDI New Mexico.

d’Amboise’s teaching approach was organic. NDI New Mexico’s Founding Artistic Director Catherine Oppenheimer knew that codifying his methods and processes would be key to the cultivation and growth of the program in New Mexico.

“Our instructors are there to inspire students to find the satisfaction of working hard and doing their best to achieve big goals, and also to get comfortable with taking risks in front of their peers,” Salganek said. “We teach through dance and the arts, but the curriculum and choreography is ultimately in the service of a child’s development.”

Jude Garcia, principal at Sandia Base Elementary, agreed. “NDI is an amazing program that supports our students in many ways,” she said. “First and foremost, it supports the multiple intelligences. Students learn through music, movement, interpersonal skills, and visual-spatial skills during NDI lessons. Students learn to work together, follow directions, and pay attention to detail during their NDI classes. All of this supports them academically in the classroom.”

Rivera noted other areas where NDI New Mexico’s whole child approach diverges from traditional dance instruction. “Our ultimate purpose is to enrich lives – the children, parents, and the community as a whole,” he said. “It’s not about a single child who is talented. It’s about this community in which we live.”

Jackie Burns, NDI New Mexico’s Director of Outreach Programs, has a unique perspective on how the whole child approach plays out in a state that is largely rural and lags behind most of the country economically. Burns has been an NDI New Mexico instructor for more than two decades – nearly her entire career. For her, the organization’s approach means that almost any child, no matter where in the state he or she lives, has access to NDI New Mexico’s unique instruction that, as Burns said, “Can reach children’s core, and help them want to be their best.”

“It’s why I love our residency programs,” Burns said, referring to the substantial instruction and performance efforts the organization brings to many rural communities around the state. “There are towns in which every single resident has been involved with NDI New Mexico in some way, whether as students, parents, or volunteers.”

With almost 30 years of success, and successful evolution, Salganek firmly believes that NDI New Mexico’s whole child approach will continue to adapt and

remain effective for generations to come. “Curriculum can and should evolve,” she said. “There will always be new styles of dance, new movement vocabulary, and new themes to explore. However, there will always be fidelity to our whole child methodology.”

New Mexico has been deeply impactful and transformational.

From his early involvement as a board member helping guide the building of The Dance Barns, to chairing the Finance and Investment Committees, instituting rigorous financial planning and oversight, to making lead gifts to major capital and endowment campaigns over the past 20 years, as well as his significant annual support, Garrett has advocated for NDI New Mexico’s long-term, sustained success.

“Since first engaging with NDI over 20 years ago, I have been impressed with the remarkable impact its programs have had on the children of New Mexico,” said Garrett Thornburg. “NDI participants improve their grades, achieve higher levels of standardized testing proficiency, and experience reduced absenteeism and fewer disciplinary infractions.

n NDI’s early years as a fledgling non-profit, Garrett rolled up his sleeves. He helped install the sprung dance floor at the Pink Church studios and drove the costume truck to performances. He celebrated with staff over dinner at Gabriel’s after the last North show each year. And whenever needs arose, Garrett provided students with lunch or rides home. NDI New Mexico Emeritus Director Susan Dubin said, “It’s amazing to think of the many thousands of children in New Mexico whose lives have been positively impacted by Garrett’s leadership and philanthropy.”

“Celebrating alongside the children really moved me,” said Mr. Thornburg. “Despite various struggles and challenges, the NDI program plays a prominent role in overcoming obstacles. Dancing their hearts out and learning about the Core Four, children discover the strength of their inner potential.”

NDI New Mexico students and their families inspired and helped shape Garrett’s philanthropic work across the state. The corporate giving program at Thornburg Investment Management invests in efforts to address homelessness, food security, the arts, and other community support.

The Thornburg Foundation’s grantmaking supports evidence-based approaches to advance reforms in education, sustainable agriculture and water, and government transparency. For more than two decades, the Thornburg Foundation has provided operating grants to dozens of vital community organizations such as Interfaith Community Shelter, Food Depot, Roadrunner Food Bank, Gerard’s House, and the Sky Center.

Each year in December, NDI joins forces with Thornburg Foundation and Thornburg Investment Management to transform The Dance Barns into a winter wonderland party bursting with food, gifts, and games for children and families currently living at the Esperanza and St. Elizabeth’s shelters.

NDI New Mexico Emeritus Director Edward Lujan said, “Garrett is quite a gentleman and caring philanthropist. The more I worked with him, the more I found that his whole focus was for the cause and the community.”

MEASURABLE RESULTS

In standardized assessments in writing, math, science, and reading, NDI New Mexico Advanced Training students outperformed their peers by 6%-17%.

In late 2020, NDI New Mexico announced the findings of an academic evaluation report conducted with The University of New Mexico Prevention Research Center and designed to understand the relationship between children’s participation in NDI New Mexico’s Advanced Training programs and school-related outcomes, including school attendance, academic performance, and disciplinary behavior. The results, which reflected the 2015-2019 academic years, were impressive:

Mexico’s Advanced Training participants had 1.5-2.5 times higher odds of being proficient on standardized tests in those subjects.

Students who participated in NDI New Mexico’s Advanced Training programs were more likely to be proficient in writing, math, science, and reading standardized testing compared to children who did not participate. Even after accounting for demographic factors such as grade level, gender, and participation in the free and reduced lunch program, NDI New

Students involved in the Advanced Training program were also less likely to be chronically absent from school compared to students who did not participate. After adjusting for demographic factors, students participating in Advanced Training programs had about 1.5-2 times the odds of having 10 or fewer absences during an academic year.

NDI New Mexico Advanced Training students had 10 or fewer absences during an academic year compared to 15-20 absences by their peers.

The odds of having disciplinary infractions at school were also lower among children in NDI New Mexico’s Advanced Training programs compared with non-participants. After adjusting for demographic factors, students who participated in the Advanced Training programs had 2.7 times statistically lower odds of having disciplinary infractions on record compared with students who did not participate.

The study represents NDI New Mexico’s culture of rigorous assessment and commitment to continuous improvement of its programs on behalf of the state’s children. Indeed, NDI New Mexico has sponsored many independent studies over nearly two decades to better understand and confirm the link between participation in its programs – including its schoolcentered programs and its more advanced After-School programs – and children’s

And while the methodologies, data sets, and focus areas have varied, the overarching results continue to show that students who participate in NDI New Mexico programs have higher test scores in writing, math, science, and reading, and also have higher grade point averages than peers.

Past analyses also have shown that children participating in the organization’s programs have demonstrated improvements in overall physical health, as well as gains in skills such as self-control, focus, planning, and prioritization.

NDI New Mexico’s arts-centered youth development programs, which are made available to children either free of charge or pay-as-you can, and their demonstrably positive impact on children’s academic performance and personal well-being, are crucial in a state that continues to grapple with issues such as poverty and sub-par academic performance. Indeed, more than one-third of New Mexico children under the age of five live in poverty and overall high school graduation rates lag behind national averages by a significant margin.

Proven teaching techniques + supportive schools + dedicated instructors + powerful performances = healthier students who are successful in school and feel prepared for life.

However, what also remains true year after year, and study after study, is that NDI New Mexico’s unique approach of using the creative arts as the catalyst for helping children develop critical life skills such as confidence, discipline, and healthy habits is a powerful weapon in New Mexico’s fight against societal issues that negatively impact its youth.

“NDI New Mexico’s mission is to give children the tools they need to thrive and succeed through every phase of life,” said NDI New Mexico Executive Director Russell Baker.

“The conduit is dance, performance, and artistic expression, but what we really provide children is an environment where they can gain confidence, learn discipline and teamwork, set high standards of excellence, and express themselves as individuals. We’re absolutely committed to continuing to conduct rigorous research to understand the impact our programs have on children, and equally important, to learn how we can continue to improve so we can have an even greater positive impact on students’ performance in school, sense of well-being, and ability to achieve their goals as they progress into adulthood.”

Previously, The University of New Mexico Center for Education Policy Research conducted a study over two academic years of more than 41,000 students grades three through nine, comparing grade point averages and standardized test scores of those who participated in NDI New Mexico programs and those who did not.

In some groups, NDI New Mexico students had, on average, GPAs a full point higher than their peers in their school district. And overall, NDI New Mexico students’ GPAs were 30%-42% higher than their peers. In standardized assessments in writing, math, science, and reading, NDI New Mexico students outperformed their peers by 6%-17%.

Importantly, all NDI New Mexico students had significantly higher increases in all outcomes related to health and behaviors compared to their peers, with the greatest gains related to working hard, selfconfidence, achieving excellence, tenacity, and goal-setting. NDI New Mexico students also showed impressive gains in teamwork, academic engagement, attempting new things, and focusing in class. Students who participated in NDI New Mexico programs demonstrated superior locomotor skills compared to peers, and also showed statistically significant improvements in endurance and strength.

“We’re proud of the fact that our programs continue to achieve their primary goals of helping children to build skills that enable them to thrive into adulthood,” Baker said. “We’re also committed to continuously improving and subjecting our work to rigorous analysis, all of which will benefit New Mexico families now and in the future.”

WHO WE SERVE

This year we will serve more than 7,500 children, reach 234 public school teachers in 87 schools in 31 communities. In addition, we will deliver 200,000 hours of instruction through live online classes and video packets.

NDI New Mexico believes that every child has the capacity to learn how to be excellent by working hard, doing their best, never giving up, and being healthy. Our work is guided by our belief in children, as well as our commitment to social responsibility, excellence, sustainability, and financial integrity.

Our In-School programs focus directly on schools and children in the greatest need: 82% qualify for Federal Free or Reduced Cost Meal Program; 68% are Hispanic, 15% Anglo, 13% Native American/Alaskan Native, 4% Multiracial, Asian/Pacific Islander, African American. We are committed to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.

Meet Alumnus

EDWIN FELTER

If you live near Santa Fe, or even in the Southwest, there’s a good chance you’ve experienced the multifaced talents of 23-year-old Edwin Felter. He sings, in a gorgeous voice. He dances with fluidity and grace: jazz, tap and, perhaps most importantly, traditional Native American hoop dance. He’s a scholar, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in engineering. He’s also deeply committed to his heritage as an instructor of Tewa, the ancestral language of Nambé Pueblo, where Felter was born and where he still lives. And last but certainly not least, Felter is an NDI New Mexico alumnus.

puts your feet to work – it probably has more footwork than any other dance form except ballet,” he said. “And when you put a kid in tap shoes, they realize they can make music with their feet. It’s so much fun.”

However, Felter’s inherent energy and joy was abruptly halted when his father died unexpectedly. Felter, still in elementary school, was left deeply traumatized. “I was depressed and in a really bad place,” he said. “I had been a social butterfly, confident, and motivated. I lost all of that when my father died.”

Like so many New Mexico school children, Felter’s NDI New Mexico experience began when he was in fourth grade and participated in its weekly dance session in his elementary school gymnasium. Instructors noticed his inherent talent and enthusiasm, and suggested he join the afterschool SWAT team.

“I always loved acting, singing, and dancing,” Felter said. “It made me feel free.” While he learned an array of dance styles, Felter said he always particularly loved tap. “Tap

Felter said the trauma left him uncomfortable in school and reluctant to continue with NDI New Mexico. “But my mom pushed me to return to my dance classes,” he said. “She felt it would help me rediscover who I was and learn how to mourn my losses but also to keep moving forward.”

And it worked. “Going back helped me overcome the emotional obstacles I was facing. And being with the instructors and the other kids helped me regain my attachments to people.”

Felter left NDI New Mexico after 6th grade to pursue other activities that enabled him to explore his other talents and his passions.

“That’s something else NDI New Mexico instructors gave me: the mind-set of never staying complacent and to learn new things. They gave me wings, and I flew.”

Felter graduated from Pojoaque Valley High School and Northern New Mexico College. He also became involved in The Lightning Boy Foundation, which is focused on nurturing youth through instruction and performance of traditional Native American hoop dancing.

“I am a traditional native man,” Felter said. “I grew up around the reservation and I was always involved with traditional dance and music.” The organization, aware of his myriad creative talents, asked Felter to join as its lead singer. “They also taught me hoop dancing and now I teach young children the basics,” he said.

The tradition of hoop dancing is vital, Felter added, because “it honors all living things present on mother earth and represents humans living in harmony together.”

In addition to teaching hoop dancing, Felter has taught elementary school math and science. He’s also a certified Tewa language

instructor, teaching indigenous language to middle- and high-school students in Pojoaque.

“One’s native language is essential to one’s purpose as a Native American,” he said. “If you can speak your language, you can fully participate in your traditions and your culture.”

Despite everything he’s already accomplished, Felter said he’s always looking for ways to contribute to his community, build on his talents, and broaden his horizons. “I feel like a human Swiss Army Knife,” he said with a laugh. “Lots of tools, lots of possibilities. NDI New Mexico helped me become that.”

NDI New Mexico’s fundamental belief is that all children have the capacity to learn to work hard, never give up, do their best, and ultimately experience success. Whether children dance with us for one year, or come back year after year, we know their experience has a positive and lasting impact on the way they see themselves and move through the world.

In-School Program

NDI New Mexico In-School classes are taught at public elementary schools during the school day as part of the schools’ curriculum. These joyful and energetic classes are taught by highly trained NDI New Mexico instructors and professional pianists. In-School classes serve an entire grade level (3rd, 4th, or 5th) and are fully inclusive of all children in a class, including those with special needs. Children in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Rio Arriba, Santa Fe, Pecos, Pojoaque, and the Española Valley receive 15-30 weekly classes throughout the school year and finish their program with exciting culminating performances. All NDI New Mexico In-School classes are free of charge for children and their families.

Residency Program

Our traveling Residency team brings music and dance to underserved children in rural and urban communities in all corners of New Mexico. The Residency team lives in each community for one to three weeks, conducting daily In-School classes that culminate in exciting, interactive performances in gyms and theaters for their friends and families. Schools, dancers, and communities look forward to NDI New Mexico’s visits each year.

After-School

THE DANCE BARNS & THE HILAND THEATER

Children ages 3-18 come to The Dance Barns in Santa Fe and The Hiland Theater in Albuquerque each week to participate in high-quality dance and performance training in creative movement, ballet, modern dance, jazz, tap, and hip-hop. Classes range from beginner to pre-professional levels and are taught by inspiring instructors using their technical dance expertise along with the NDI New Mexico instruction. These classes are open to all children in the community. Tuition for these programs is offered on a sliding scale, ensuring that every child has the opportunity for an enriching after school experience. Whether children are exploring their first experience in dance, taking classes for creative expression and exercise, or have their sights set on a career in the performing arts, our After-School programs build a sense of achievement in a nurturing and noncompetitive atmosphere.

Teaching Excellence ®

NDI New Mexico is committed to developing highly trained instructors to deliver our award-winning instruction to children across the state. Instructors are the backbone of our programs, and their expertise is vital to a child’s engagement and success. Our Teaching Excellence® workshop is a critical building block for training our instructors to develop the skills needed to conduct fast-paced, dynamic, and engaging classes. During the two-week intensive, participants work with children alongside our own master teachers and are immersed in hands-on training in NDI New Mexico’s highly engaging, fun, and athletic teaching methodology.

There is so much to love about NDI New Mexico! In addition to the sense of satisfaction I get contributing as a board member, I especially appreciate my involvement on the Santa Fe Gala Committee. There’s great camaraderie and a mix of both long-time members and new members. Each person brings brilliant ideas and an enthusiastic spirit to the committee.

The joy, energy, and excitement on the day of the Santa Fe Gala is like no other! Watching students perform in the theater and then proudly greet guests afterwards as they walk into the grand tent for a post-performance dinner party is uplifting and inspiring.

THE DELGADO FAMILY

As NDI New Mexico nears its 30th anniversary, a common observation is how its positive impact now extends across multiple generations of New Mexicans. The child who in the 1990s attended dance classes in the “little pink church” off Pacheco Street in Santa Fe is now a parent who watches his or her own children perform at The Dance Barns or The Hiland Theater. Similarly, community members whose belief in the promise of NDI New Mexico during its early years have continued their support over multiple generations within their own families.

Take the Delgados: Larry and Angie, their daughter Cynthia and her husband John, along with son David and his wife Lori. As a family they have supported NDI New

The family’s involvement with NDI New Mexico began in the late 1990s. Larry, who served on the Santa Fe City Council from 1990-1998 and as the city’s mayor from 1998-2006, said he first heard of NDI New Mexico just a few years after it was established during a conversation with Ambassador Frank Ortiz Jr., a Santa Fe native who served as the Ambassador of the United States to Grenada, Barbados, Guatemala, Peru, and Argentina.

“I was talking to the ambassador one day and he told me, ‘You just have to see this program,’” Larry recalled.

“So, we bought tickets, went to the performance and were just completely inspired by the children.”

They were so inspired, Angie noted, that Larry and the Ambassador worked together with the Santa Fe public school board to enter a long-term lease with NDI New Mexico, enabling the organization to establish a permanent home in the city –what is now The Dance Barns. Larry also served as a member of the NDI New Mexico Government Relations Committee for more than 10 years. The couple became stalwart donors, contributing each year, as well as

supporting special events and the NDI New Mexico Endowment. They are committed to sustaining the future of NDI New Mexico.

“We even performed onstage one year,” Angie said with a laugh. The theme of that year’s performance was the swing era of the late 1930s and, as Larry noted, “Angie and I like to dance, and we like to dance the jitterbug.” However, in true NDI New Mexico fashion, Larry and Angie were expected to attend rehearsals along with their much younger dance partners. NDI New Mexico co-founder Catherine Oppenheimer even sent them home with videotapes (this was the 1990s after all) so they could practice on their own.

But the Delgado family’s contribution hardly ended there. Larry and Angie introduced their daughter Cynthia to the organization. “I was blown away by NDI New Mexico’s impact on New Mexico’s youth,” Cynthia said.

“It was important to me to be involved in the Santa Fe community and I just jumped into being part of the NDI New Mexico family,” she added. Her contributions over the last 20+ years are significant: Cynthia served as a board member for 17 years, serving as Chair for two of those years and working on the board’s development, strategic planning, and executive committees. After transitioning off the board, she joined NDI New Mexico as a staff member, where for nearly four years she has served as director of government and corporate relations. She and her husband, John, also serve as volunteers and, like Cynthia’s parents, donate to the organization through annual giving and as special event donors. They are also Silver Sneakers Legacy Society members.

Larry and Angie agreed that children benefit from NDI New Mexico in ways that are transformative and have lifelong impact.

“Young people need to have self-esteem,” Larry said. “They also need to understand the concept of teamwork and they need to have a sense of discipline. All of that comes together when they rehearse, and especially when they get to perform in front of their families.”

Angie added, “NDI New Mexico expects children to follow rules and work hard, but also to enjoy themselves, support each other, and communicate.”

The Delgado family sees itself as inextricably linked to NDI New Mexico’s past, as well as its future. Larry and Angie have great hopes for the organization’s future. “Funding is very important but so is support from the community,” Angie said.

For Larry, the hope is also that the organization can continue to grow and reach even more families across the state.

“Thousands of children are being taught important lessons such as self-worth, the rewards of hard work, and that they have people who care about them,” Larry said.

“I want to see thousands more children involved, so they can learn these lessons as well.”

And getting involved in support of those goals isn’t hard, Angie said. “Once you see those children smiling onstage, you’re hooked. I love those smiles!”

One of the hallmarks of NDI New Mexico is a tradition of live musical accompaniment, performed by talented professional musicians. Its lively tunes have literally been heard in communities across the entire state of New Mexico for nearly three decades: Pianos are rolled into elementary school gymnasiums as part of NDI New Mexico’s In-School program, afterschool students rehearse their steps to live musical accompaniment, and of course a live ensemble drives the large-scale performances.

And, as the NDI New Mexico community knows, the heart and soul of the program has for decades been Musical Director Bert Dalton.

Dalton is retiring after leading NDI New Mexico’s musical program since 1996, “Back when Catherine Oppenheimer was running it out of her living room,” he said. “We’ve come a long way since then.”

Dalton said he wasn’t sure what or even how to play piano for a children’s dance class. “My friend just said, ‘you’ll figure it out.’”

Dalton is a modest man, describing himself as “an itinerant jazz musician from Chicago.” In fact, he had a thriving career as a touring musician, producer, and arranger when a friend contacted him out of the blue and asked if he’d be interested in playing piano “for a class at a dance school.” Dalton said he wasn’t sure what or even how to play piano for a children’s dance class. “My friend just said, ‘you’ll figure it out.’”

What impressed and intrigued Dalton was the interplay between the dance instructor, the music, and the children. “There’s something about live musical accompaniment that draws out a better performance and makes it more exciting for children,” he said.

“The musicians bring personality and humor to the process. All of that makes it really fun, and when children are having fun, they retain more information.”

And while it’s a rollicking good time for all, the role of the musician as part of the teaching process is highly nuanced. “While a lot of what we do as musicians is improvised, we’re watching the instructors very closely and responding to what they’re teaching. Everything we’re doing is to focus the children’s attention on what the instructor is teaching. That constant interplay between all of us is really what makes the classes work.”

Though traditional musical education is not the primary role of the musical staff, Dalton laughingly said that he “tries to slip it in when the children aren’t looking.” He’s described the inner workings of the piano, discussed the importance of various musical articulations such as staccato and legato, and challenged students with odd meters and unique lyrical pieces. “We’ve even written music to accompany poetry,” he said.

The

true education, and the larger meaning of NDI New Mexico’s musical program

is to help students learn important life skills that help them thrive now and in the future. “That’s really what we’re teaching. We’re just using the very effective tool of music to do it,” Dalton said.

Dalton said he’s confident in handing over the reins of the musical program after all these years. “It’s been a good run and I’m ready to retire,” he said. The musical department has grown over the years from a literal one-man band to several music directors and nearly 20 pianists.

But for those envisioning the jazzy sound of Bert Dalton fading away from NDI New Mexico, he said not to worry. “I’m looking forward to my first summer off in 25 years. However, I’ll continue to be a resource for the organization.”

And that statement is surely music to everyone’s ears.

Meet Alumnus JAMES MONTAÑO

Many, if not most, NDI New Mexico alumni recall the years of memories they accumulated through their participation: the introduction to dance and live musical accompaniment in their elementary school gymnasiums, the thrill of being chosen for afterschool SWAT teams, and perhaps even the rigorous training as a member of Celebration Team.

This precocious, curious boy also happened to be in the fourth grade at Salazar Elementary School as NDI New Mexico was in its earliest stages, having established a New Mexico foothold a year or two before. “In those early years, the organization would do one big production at one school,” Montaño said. And in 1992 NDI New Mexico chose Salazar, and the performance was The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere.

For James Montaño, now 37 years old and a Ph.D. student in the Department of Theatre and Dance at the University of Texas in Austin, it was a single experience with NDI New Mexico as a Santa Fe elementary school student that profoundly influenced the course of his education and career.

For several years, Montaño, his parents, and four siblings lived in a trailer park near the Santa Fe airport. “My father made jewelry for a gallery downtown, but we never went there. Santa Fe then, and in many ways even now, felt like three different cities shoved together,” he said. “I would ask myself, ‘Why can’t I go there too?’” And as a teenager I would go out on my own to hear music and to see live theater.”

Participating in the production was a transformative experience not just for Montaño, but for everyone at Salazar. “The entire school reshaped itself for this performance,” he recalled. Physical Education classes became dance rehearsals. Artists arrived to paint a gorgeous mural across the school’s façade. Costumes were sewn. “And every single adult at the school, from teachers to janitors, got involved.”

“The entire process was amazing,” Montaño said. But what struck him most deeply was being part of a collaborative process. “The production exposed all of us to a new way of engaging with ourselves, each other, and the arts,” he said.

Ironically, Montaño himself did not dance in the production. “I grew up in the church and was primarily a singer,” he said. “I remember being disappointed at first that I didn’t have a dancing role, but I could sing, and I knew how to harmonize, so I became part of the performance’s choir. It was such an exciting experience.”

It was also the beginning of what would eventually become an esteemed academic and professional trajectory. “That performance at Salazar was a completely new experience for me. It created this entirely new existence that ran parallel with my daily world. It was a rush that I kept trying to recreate and pointed me toward the world of theater,” he said.

Montaño attended University of Massachusetts Amherst, then received a graduate degree from Harvard University. Along the way he also taught performing arts and nurtured a deep passion for regional theater. He’s nearing the end of his doctoral studies in Texas, focusing on the impact of regional theaters across the U.S.

“New York takes a lot of the energy and attention in the world of theater, but if you talk to the performers, they’ll tell you their first performance was for an organization like NDI New Mexico, or in some other regional theater. Organizations like NDI New Mexico are important contributors to their communities and incredible exporters of talent.”

Montaño loves his role as a university instructor and is committed to helping regional theater companies thrive. And in many ways, he said, all of that started with The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere at Salazar Elementary School in Santa Fe.

“I feel so lucky to have been exposed to something I loved at such a young age,” he said. “It was performance – seeing it, feeling it, and participating in it – that made me realize this was the language I wanted to learn and where I wanted to make a contribution.”

PAUL AND CONNIE CASSIDY

My wife Connie and I have been involved with NDI New Mexico for several years, and I’ve been a board member for four years. I’ll be taking on the role of board chair in September of 2022.

It’s the children who participate in NDI New Mexico who drew us in, and who keep us engaged and supportive. There’s nothing better than seeing their smiling faces, and to see how proud and supportive their parents are of their achievements. And of course, NDI New Mexico has a terrific staff. They’re all good, dedicated people who are at the organization for the right reasons.

Connie and I think it’s important that NDI New Mexico focuses beyond the major cities such as Albuquerque and Santa Fe. The needs are the same whether a child is in Silver City, Taos, or Socorro.

Michael Herndon 1955-2021

In memory of our dear friend Michael Herndon, an incomparable singer, songwriter, and entertainer, and father of three. Michael performed with NDI New Mexico for nearly 20 years and deeply touched the lives of everyone who had the pleasure and privilege of working with him, as well as the thousands of children and families who saw him perform year after year. He spread love, joy, and inspiration as a musician and a friend. Rest in peace.
