The National Dental Association promotes oral health equity among people of color by harnessing the collective power of its members, advocating for the needs of and mentoring dental students of color, and raising the profile of the profession in our communities.

GOALS

The goals of the National Dental Association are to:

Improve the delivery of oral health care in underserved communities and improve the educational opportunities of minorities underrepresented in the oral health field.

The specific objectives of the NDA are to:

Establish the NDA as the vanguard of oral health in communities of color.

Perpetuate the tradition and upgrade the stature of African American dentists in service to the minority community.

Increase the number of minorities in dentistry in areas of private practice, academia, administration, research, health policy, media advocacy and the armed services.

As we present the Winter edition of The Flossline, we are reminded that this season invites both reflection and renewed energy for the year ahead. Across the National Dental Association, our members continue to demonstrate leadership, service, and an unwavering commitment to advancing oral health in our communities.

This issue highlights the many ways our organization remains active and engaged. Inside, you will find updates from the National Office, including moments of connection with members at the Hinman Dental Meeting, as well as announcements and opportunities for involvement, such as the upcoming NDA on the Hill advocacy event.

We are also proud to feature the work of our local chapters, including the exciting relaunch of the Greater Metro New York Chapter and community outreach efforts taking place across the country. In addition, this edition recognizes important observances, including Black History Month, Women’s History Month, and National Children’s Dental Health Month.

AN OPEN LETTER TO NDA MEMBERS PRESIDENT

Dr. Wallace J. Bellamy

Building on Legacy, Moving Forward

Dear NDA Family,

My name is Wallace J. Bellamy, and I am honored to serve as the 102nd President of the National Dental Association.

My journey to dentistry and leadership is both unique and inspiring. I am a first-generation dentist with an aesthetic and general dental practice in Elk Grove, a suburb of Sacramento, California. Along with my brother Fred, I am the first in both my immediate and extended family to graduate from college—California State University, Sacramento. However, my story begins well before college.

A chance appointment with a caring dentist led to an opportunity to shadow him between two-a-day football practices during my sophomore and junior years of high school. By the end of that two-week summer experience, I knew I wanted to become a dentist.

I am the son of a career U.S. Air Force sergeant and aircraft mechanic, and I was born in New York City. Because of my father’s service, I lived throughout the United States and Europe. I later graduated from the Boston University School of Dental Medicine and returned to Sacramento to begin my private practice. I did not initially consider myself a leader during college or dental school. However, a mentor and friend recognized leadership potential in me as I was building my practice and encouraged me to become involved in organized dentistry.

Since then, I have had the privilege of serving in several leadership roles, including President of the Sacramento Society of the National Dental Association, President of the Sacramento District Dental Society, Vice Regent for the Northern California Region of the International College of Dentists, Chair of the Leadership Development Committee for the California Dental Association, and one of twelve Directors of the California Dental Association.

Building on our foundation, this moment in history demands intentional leadership to dismantle inequities in oral health and rebuild health and social systems—both internal and external—that truly serve our communities. As NDA members, we are not merely responding to change; we are uniquely positioned to design and manifest solutions through advocacy, innovation, and collective action. This theme affirms our power to shape the future of dentistry with purpose, equity, and impact.

This theme aligns seamlessly with the NDA’s new Strategic Plan, which is built upon four primary pillars identified by our members as the most impactful:

Beyond dentistry, I am the father of three independent young women, a horseman and cowboy—a term historically rooted in men and women of color—a vintner, an avid reader, and a traveler. Above all, I still love what I do: caring for patients and connecting with people.

Dear NDA Family,

It is both an honor and a profound responsibility to serve as Chairman of the Board of the National Dental Association. At this defining moment for our profession and our communities, I invite you to join us July 16–19, 2026, in Richmond, Virginia, for the National Dental Association Convention.

This year’s theme, Architects of Change, is more than a phrase; it is a call to action. Richmond, a city rooted in history and transformation, provides the ideal setting for four days of connection, clinical advancement, leadership development, and purpose-driven momentum toward oral health equity. Together, we will sharpen our clinical expertise, strengthen our practices, mentor emerging leaders, and recommit ourselves to serving the communities that depend on our advocacy and excellence.

I extend sincere appreciation to the members of the Peter B. Ramsey Dental Society for their partnership and dedicated leadership in planning this convention. Your collaboration reflects the strength and unity that define the NDA.

As we gather in Richmond, I also urge every eligible dentist, student, and specialist to commit to membership in the National Dental Association. Membership is not simply a professional affiliation; it is an investment in collective influence, mentorship, advocacy, and legacy. When we stand together, our voice carries farther.

The National Dental Association was founded during a time of segregation and exclusion, when equity in opportunity and access was denied. While the landscape has evolved, inequities remain. In many ways, our voice today is even more critical than during those early formative years. We must continue to advocate intentionally for our students, our practices, and the communities we serve.

That advocacy continues beyond the convention. I invite you to join us for NDA Hill Day in Washington, DC, in May 2026, where we will stand united on Capitol Hill to champion policies that advance oral health equity and protect the future of our profession.

Colleagues, I am proud to echo the theme of our President, Dr. Wallace Bellamy: we are not merely participants in dentistry; we are architects shaping its future. LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Executive Insights

Dear NDA Family,

As we begin a new year, I want to share several updates from the National Office and highlight the momentum building across the National Dental Association. Our progress is made possible by the dedication of our members, leaders, and partners, who continue to advance our mission of improving oral health equity and strengthening our profession.

I want to recognize the leadership of our President, Dr. Wallace Bellamy, whose 100 Day Plan has helped energize the organization and sharpen our focus on key priorities. I also encourage members to review the NDA Strategic Plan, which provides a roadmap for our work through 2028 and reflects a shared vision for the future of the Association.

Our advocacy efforts remain a central focus. The NDA will host Hill Day on May 7 in Washington, DC, bringing members together to engage with policymakers and elevate the importance of oral health in national policy discussions. We also look forward to strengthening our presence during Congressional Black Caucus Weekend and continuing to ensure that oral health remains part of the broader health equity conversation.

This summer, we are excited to gather for the 113th Annual NDA Convention in Richmond, Virginia, July 16–19, 2026. Planning is well underway for a dynamic program featuring continuing education, networking opportunities, and the return of the NDA Golf Tournament, a favorite tradition among members.

As we look ahead, I encourage every member to stay engaged, whether through your local society, regional events, advocacy initiatives, or national programs. The NDA’s strength has always been rooted in the active participation of its members.

Finally, I ask each of you to help us retain, recruit, and reclaim members. Invite a colleague to join the NDA, encourage a former member to return, and help us grow the next generation of leaders. The challenges ahead require a strong and united voice for our profession and the communities we serve.

NDA National Office Connects with Boston University Students

Dr. Dunham, Assistant Dean of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging, and Justice and Assistant Professor of General Dentistry at Boston University, organized a dinner at Eddie Merlot’s Steakhouse in Boston’s Seaport District. The elegant setting provided a welcoming atmosphere for meaningful conversation as student doctors shared their professional journeys with representatives from the NDA National Office.

The National Dental Association, in partnership with the Georgia Dental Society, successfully hosted the Hinman Reception on March 13 in Atlanta, bringing together dental professionals for an evening of connection, collaboration, and community engagement. Held during the renowned Thomas P. Hinman Dental Meeting, the reception provided a welcoming space for attendees to network, strengthen professional relationships, and celebrate the shared mission of advancing oral health equity.

The Hinman Meeting itself remains one of the most respected and well-attended dental conferences in the country, drawing thousands of dental professionals each year for worldclass continuing education, cutting-edge exhibits, and meaningful peer engagement. Hosted annually in Atlanta, the meeting features a robust Exhibit Hall and a wide range of educational sessions designed to keep dental teams at the forefront of innovation and clinical excellence.

hroughout this year’s conference, the National Dental Association maintained a strong presence in the Exhibit Hall, where the organization hosted a booth dedicated to engaging attendees, sharing resources, and highlighting its mission. Transition Weekend 2025

The National Dental Association hosted a highly engaging continuing education webinar on November 6, 2025, as part of its 102nd National President’s Inaugural Weekend. In collaboration with Crest and Oral-B, and with support from the California Dental Association, the event highlighted the Association’s commitment to advancing equity and inclusion in oral healthcare. Titled “Advancing Patient Health with Authentic and Trusting Relationships: The Importance of Cultural Humility for Dentistry,” the webinar brought together dental professionals nationwide to earn CE credit while exploring patient-centered care.

Keynote speaker Dr. Eleanor Flemming led a compelling session focused on the shift from cultural competency to cultural humility. Attendees examined how lifelong learning, self-reflection, and a deeper understanding of diverse patient experiences can strengthen trust and improve health outcomes. The discussion emphasized practical strategies for building authentic relationships and fostering inclusivity in everyday clinical practice.

Continuing Education Sessions Transition Weekend 2025

The National Dental Association delivered three high-impact continuing education sessions during its 102nd National President’s Inaugural Weekend, each designed to strengthen clinical excellence and patient care. These sessions brought together respected leaders in dentistry to provide attendees with practical, evidence-based insights that could be immediately applied in practice.

The first session, led by Dr. Stanley Malamed, focused on pain control protocols and strategies to make dental procedures more comfortable, effective, and safe. A nationally recognized expert in dental anesthesia and author of widely used textbooks, Dr. Malamed guided participants through modern approaches to managing pain and anxiety in clinical settings, reinforcing the importance of patient safety and preparedness. The second session, presented by Dr. Tamir Wardany, explored the underlying causes of short- and long-term dental implant complications, equipping attendees with critical thinking tools to better diagnose, prevent, and manage implant-related challenges.

The final session featured Michelle Callaghan, who led an interactive course on Bioclear techniques and injection molding. This hands-on focused session emphasized minimally invasive restorative dentistry and innovative techniques to improve esthetic outcomes. Together, these three CE courses reflected the National Dental Association’s ongoing commitment to advancing clinical knowledge, fostering innovation, and supporting dental professionals in delivering high-quality, patient-centered care.

NDA HealthNow® Transition Weekend 2025 2025 NDA Transition Weekend

The National Dental Association proudly hosted its NDA HEALTH NOW® Community Dental Day on Friday, November 7, 2025, at Saint Paul Church of Sacramento, providing essential oral health services to the local community. As part of the Association’s signature NDA HEALTH NOW® initiative, the event focused on expanding access to care, improving health literacy, and promoting preventive oral health practices in underserved populations.

During the event, NDA volunteers and dental professionals provided free dental screenings for both adults and children, ensuring that families had access to critical early detection and guidance for maintaining oral health. Attendees also received dental supplies, educational resources, and participated in engaging, family-friendly activities designed to promote healthy habits. The event created a welcoming and impactful environment where community members could connect directly with oral health professionals and gain valuable knowledge about their care.

This Community Dental Day reflected the National Dental Association’s ongoing commitment to eliminating oral health disparities and bringing care directly to communities in need. Through initiatives like NDA HEALTH NOW®, the Association continued to champion equitable access to care while empowering individuals and families to take an active role in their oral health and overall well-being.

BOARD MEETING

Q4 Board of Trustees Meeting Summary

The Q4 Board of Trustees meeting of the National Dental Association was held in Sacramento and focused on strategic planning, financial stewardship, and organizational growth.

During the meeting, the Board approved the Association’s 2026–2029 Strategic Plan, centered on membership engagement, community outreach, student and pipeline support, and health policy and advocacy. Trustees also reviewed the proposed 2026 budget, with discussions emphasizing sustainability, operational efficiency, and alignment with organizational priorities.

The Board additionally approved the site selection for the 2027 National Convention as part of its long-term planning efforts.

A featured presentation from the California Dental Association highlighted findings from its newly released oral health equity report, including disparities in access to care and opportunities for collaborative advocacy and policy work.

The meeting also included standard officer, committee, and staff reports covering governance, membership, finances, programs, and convention planning.

EDDIE G. SMITH LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE

The Eddie G Smith Leadership Institute (EGSL)’s mission to equip current and future leaders with the tools to guide the National Dental Association into its next century. Through expert-led sessions, peer learning, and mentorship, participants will strengthen their capacity to lead, serve, and grow within the NDA.

Eddie G. Smith, Jr., DDS, FACD, FICD, authored the first Constitution of the NDA, served as the first Speaker of the House of Delegates (1967-1970), and served as President of the NDA from 1972-1973. Dr. Smith fervently believed that the future of the NDA would be determined by the strength of its leaders; that the duty and obligation of current leaders is to sufficiently train and mentor future leaders; and that the information, history and knowledge must be preserved and passed on to the next generations. He also believed that those who have the capacity to lead must do so and that to carry the mantle of leadership, leaders must devote themselves to becoming students of the leadership process.

Focuses on developing and recommending policies and programs to improve public dental health. This committee also assists component societies and agencies in enhancing community oral health programs.

Considers and addresses insurance-related issues for the protection of association members. This committee also advises the Board of Trustees on plans aligned with policies adopted by the House of Delegates.

Facilitates cooperation with dentists and dental organizations domestically and abroad to exchange dental knowledge and information in alignment with House policies.

Investigates and evaluates applicants for loans from the association’s special fund, designed to support deserving students at the nation’s dental colleges.

Ensures that the organization adheres to the highest ethical standards in all its activities and decision-making processes.

Builds strategic collaborations to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion in dental education, leadership, research, and patient care. This committee strives to close disparities affecting Black, Latinx, and American Indian communities,

ADVOCACY CORNER

UNDERSTANDING THE 2026 MIDTERMS

U.S. midterm elections occur every two years during the middle of a presidential term. In 2026, voters across the country will head to the polls on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.

During midterm elections, Americans vote for several important federal, state, and local offices.

At the federal level, voters elect all 435 members of the U.S. House of Representatives and approximately one-third of the U.S. Senate (33 or 34 seats). In many states, voters will also elect governors, state legislators, and other local officials, depending on the election cycle and state ballot.

Midterm elections play a critical role in shaping the direction of the country. The results determine which political party controls Congress, influencing legislation, healthcare policy, funding priorities, and regulatory decisions that can affect professions such as dentistry and public health.

For healthcare professionals and organized dentistry, civic participation helps ensure that policymakers understand the needs of patients, providers, and communities—particularly on issues such as access to oral health care, Medicaid policy, workforce development, and public health programs.

Election timelines and procedures vary by state, but voters should be aware of several key deadlines, including voter registration deadlines, early voting periods, and absentee or mail ballot request deadlines. Members are encouraged to check their state election websites or Vote.gov for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

Voting is one of the most powerful ways to participate in the democratic process. By staying informed and engaged, dental professionals can help shape policies that impact oral health care and the communities we serve.

The ANDA has been for many years a support group for the spouses of dental professionals. Membership is open to all spouses regardless of sex. ANDA also raises scholarship funds and awards yearly scholarship(s) to deserving dental students. This is done at the NDA Convention and through individual donations.

Greetings NDA Family,

Organizations such as the Auxiliary to the National Dental Association (ANDA) must continually define and redefine their purpose during uncertain times.

Early on, ANDA’s role was clear, as was the makeup of its membership. However, much has changed, and we have now been given a blank canvas to respond to those changes. It is up to us to imagine and recreate the organization we want ANDA to be.

What will membership in ANDA look like? What will our value proposition be? In what ways will we complement the mission of the NDA? How will we expand our outreach? Do we need a leadership succession plan? How will we manage our scholarship funds? And how will we address obstacles created by the current administration’s manufactured “DEI” problem?

While uncertainty may describe where we are today, one thing is certain: we must meet this moment, and we must do so with confidence.

That means we must be decisive, courageous, and ready to step into the unknown. We must be willing to feel uncomfortable, because these are not comfortable times. We must remove fear from our decisionmaking and embrace what has not yet been defined.

The NDHA

Founded in 1932, the National Dental Hygienists’ Association (NDHA) has been committed to the professional development needs of its members. Since its inception, the objective was to address the professional concerns of African American dental hygienists. Through the years, the organization has grown and in 1962 it became an affiliate of the National Dental Association. The goal at the time was to develop a network of communication and camaraderie among its members. The NDHA offers limited financial support to students of color through its scholarships that are awarded annually. Student memberships are also available for a small membership fee.

The National Dental Hygienists’ Association (NDHA) has proudly launched its first-ever Student Success Program, License Ready. This initiative is designed to support dental hygiene students as they transition from education to licensure and professional practice.

NDAF Announces Historic Scholarship Investment for Academic Year 2026–2027

As we prepare for the Academic Year 2026–2027, I am proud to announce the continued expansion of the NDAF–Colgate Scholarship & Fellowship Program and the third year of the Crest–Oral-B BRIDGES Scholarships.

Through the generous support of the Colgate-Palmolive Company, the National Dental Association Foundation will award 58 scholarships and fellowships totaling $280,500 in direct support this year, one of the most significant investments in our history.

Dr. Jeanne C. Her leadership reshaped dental education and expanded opportunities nationwide for men and women of color.

Dr. James E. GBADS, UCSF, College of Alameda Community Service Health Fair

Dentists, guests, and dental auxiliaries came together in service to the community at the Bay Area Health Ministry Health Fair, held on September 6, 2025, at Parks Chapel AME Church. Members of the Greater Bay Area Dental Society welcomed the opportunity to mentor and connect with student attendees, including UCSF SNDA students and College of Alameda dental assisting students. In addition to networking and outreach, dental professionals assembled oral hygiene and educational kits for community members. The event also featured Alameda County resources and a food giveaway. GBADS is proud to recognize all of the volunteers whose efforts reflected the organization’s commitment to service and community engagement.

Greater Bay Area Dental Society Professional Student Mixer February 6, 2026

On February 6, 2026, GBADS members hosted a professional student mixer at the office of NDA member Dr. Danny Marquis. The event brought together SNDA students from local San Francisco dental schools, including UCSF and UOP, for an evening of mentorship, networking, and encouragement. Attendees were introduced to the value of organized dentistry and encouraged to remain engaged through the National Dental Association. Co-sponsored by Viv Arches Dental Studio of Northern California, the mixer served as a meaningful investment in the next generation of minority oral health professionals.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHTS NYC

The Greater Metro New York Chapter of the National Dental Association has been actively rebuilding and relaunching its presence in 2026. The chapter began the year with the GMNY NDA Relaunch Party, welcoming both longtime and prospective members, introducing its new executive board, and hosting National President Dr. Wallace Bellamy, President-Elect Dr. Dorita Newsome-Dobbins, and Executive Director Marcus Ware as honored guests.

Later in January, GMNY NDA partnered with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. for the MLK Day of Service, providing dental screenings and oral health education to a local community in need.

In February, in celebration of Black History Month, chapter president Dr. Emma J. Guzman, along with members Dr. Chanelle Small and Dr. Ashley Lofters, presented a multidisciplinary lecture for the New York State Dental Association titled Rooted in Excellence.

Over the coming months, GMNY NDA will continue expanding its community impact through partnerships with the Queens Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, Flagston Family Center, and Black Men’s Health for a series of educational and service-driven events. As the chapter moves forward, it remains committed to education, fellowship, leadership development, and community engagement.

SHAW UNIVERSITY WELCOMES NEWEST SNDA CHAPTER

The Shaw University Undergraduate Student National Dental Association was founded to provide students with a platform for collaboration, mentorship, and professional growth in dentistry. Under the leadership of Founder and President Ezekiel Kwandahor-Mensah, the society has quickly become a hub for academic excellence, leadership, and community building.

Driven by a strong passion for dentistry, Ezekiel founded and now serves as president of the first-ever Shaw University Pre-Dental Society, creating a space for students to collaborate, study, and prepare for careers in dental medicine. He has completed more than 120 hours of dental shadowing, attended multiple national conferences, and joined NC State’s dental society as a freshman to expand his professional network. His research involvement also includes shadowing prostate cancer studies at Duke University, where he explored the connection between dental hygiene and prostate cancer risk.

WOLVERINE DENTAL SOCIETY

The Wolverine Dental Society proudly represents African American dentists throughout the metro Detroit area and continues to create meaningful opportunities for education, connection, and professional growth. Our monthly meetings and continuing education courses are open to both members and non-members and are hosted primarily via Zoom Webinar.

March’s continuing education program features “Management and Prevention of Dental Caries: An Evidence-Based Update,” presented by Dr. Edmond R. Hewlett, DDS, Professor Emeritus and Associate Dean at the UCLA School of Dentistry. In April, we look forward to hosting our Annual CE Day at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry, featuring Dr. Tamika Thompson and Dr. Anthony Neely. This event remains a favorite among local dentists, hygienists, dental assistants, and dental students.

Student engagement has also remained a priority. In the fall, male dentists and dental students gathered for the Brothers Brunch, and this month, female dentists and dental students will come together for a Ladies High Tea. These events provide valuable opportunities for mentorship, connection, and community building.

We are also excited for our end-of-season gathering aboard the Diamond Jack Detroit Belle Riverboat, where guests will enjoy dinner, dancing, a continuing education course, and a scenic sunset cruise along the Detroit River.

Honoring the Life and Legacy of Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr.

Black History Month offers a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the leaders whose courage, vision, and sacrifice helped shape the world we live in today. Among those figures stands Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr., a man whose life’s work left an undeniable mark on the fight for civil rights, political representation, economic justice, and human dignity. For decades, his voice stood as both a challenge and an encouragement — urging the nation to do better, reach farther, and remember those too often left unheard.

Rev. Jackson emerged during one of the most transformative periods in American history. As a young activist, he became involved in the Civil Rights Movement and went on to work closely with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He later led Operation Breadbasket in Chicago, focusing on economic empowerment and greater opportunity for Black communities. His work reflected a belief that justice was not only about equal access under the law, but also about real access to jobs, resources, and dignity.

Throughout his career, Rev. Jackson consistently pushed the conversation forward. He understood that the fight for equality had to extend beyond protest alone. It had to include advocacy, policy, economic advancement, education, and coalition building. That vision led to the founding of Operation PUSH and later the Rainbow Coalition, which brought together people from many different communities under a shared call for justice and opportunity. His leadership reminded the country that progress becomes stronger when people work together across lines of race, class, and

The National Dental Association proudly recognizes Dr. Cherae Farmer-Dixon for her historic achievement and continued leadership in dental education. As Dean of the Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry and Chair of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Board of Directors, Dr. Farmer-Dixon continues to lead with excellence, vision, and purpose. Her appointment is especially significant as she is the first Black woman to hold this role in ADEA’s 101-year history, marking an important milestone for academic dentistry.

This moment is one of great pride for the NDA. Dr. Farmer-Dixon’s accomplishment reflects the values our organization continues to champion: leadership, service, representation, and a commitment to excellence. Her rise to this role is a testament to years of dedication and impact in dental education, patient care, and institutional leadership. It also serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of Black leadership in shaping the future of the profession.

A native of Indianola, Mississippi, Dr. Farmer-Dixon is a graduate of Mississippi Valley State University and Meharry Medical College, where she earned both her DDS and MSPH degrees. She later earned an Executive MBA from Tennessee State University and completed additional leadership training through Harvard University and Boston University. With more than 30 years of experience as a clinician, educator, and administrator, she has consistently advanced dental education and expanded access to care for underserved communities.

The NDA is honored to celebrate Dr. Farmer-Dixon not only for the history she has made, but for the legacy she continues to build. Her leadership is an inspiration to students, educators, and dental professionals across the country, and her achievement stands as a meaningful example of excellence, progress, and possibility.

As the National Dental Association recognizes National Children’s Dental Health Month, we are reminded of the importance of promoting healthy habits, preventive care, and access to quality dental services for children. This annual observance highlights the vital role that education, early intervention, and community outreach play in helping children build strong foundations for lifelong oral health. It also reflects the NDA’s continued commitment to advancing equity in oral health and supporting the well-being of the communities we serve.

The Wolverine Dental Society and the National Dental Association extend their deepest sympathies and prayers to the family of Dr. Paul Agyekum, who passed away on Saturday, February 7, 2026.

THE JACKSON HISTORICAL HOUSE IN ALABAMA

As our nation prepares to commemorate its 250th anniversary, the story of National Dental Association alumnus Dr. Sullivan Jackson is being remembered and retold. He and his wife Richie Jean Sherrod Jackson and their home played pivotal roles in the Selma to Montgomery Marches leading to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Designed and built by Wallace Rayfield, the second Black architect to be licensed in the U.S., the Jackson’s house was home to three generations of African American dentists, Dr. William Whitted, Dr. E. F. Portlock and Dr. Sullivan Jackson. Dr. Jackson, a graduate of West Virginia State University and Meharry Medical College, as well as a WWII veteran who served in the 588th ambulance company which landed at Normandy on D-Day, was the third to live there. Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Coretta Scott King were childhood friends and the Jacksons answered the call when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. needed a safe haven from which to rest, plan and execute the marches in March, 1965.

In 2022 Jawana Jackson, the Jackson’s only child, approached The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan about permanently acquiring and moving her family home to secure its place in history for generations to come. The Henry Ford agreed and is currently restoring it along with 7000 related artifacts including the chair in which Dr. King sat to watch President Johnson deliver his famous “We Shall Overcome” speech signaling the forthcoming Voting Rights Act. Other artifacts include Dr. Jackson’s dental instruments, his tooth-shaped dental office clock, his Alabama Dental Society Award and a teeth shade guide circa 1950-1959.

The Jackson Home opens to the public on Friday, June 12 even as the campaign to raise funds to restore it, preserve and digitize artifacts and create educational exhibits and curricula continues. NDA members are welcome to visit the home upon its opening and join The Henry Ford in perpetuating the Jackson legacy through campaign donations.
