Social Activist Shares Her Story CJ GUION | EDITOR - IN - CHIEF This week, social activist Kemba Smith will be speaking about her experience with domestic violence, as well as her experience being incarcerated after becoming romantically involved with a drug dealer during college. Kemba’s story has been featured on many national programs which caught the attention of former President Bill Clinton who personally wrote a letter which in return reduced her sentence. Kemba Smith grew up in Richmond, Virginia as on only child. Following her high school graduation, Smith became a student at Hampton University. During her time at the university, Kemba Smith became involved with a drug dealer in an attempt to fit in. Following this relationship, Kemba Smith was sentenced to 24.5 years in a federal prison, but ended up serving only 6.5 years. She was granted clemency by former President Bill Clinton in 2000 after he witnessed her story. Smith received vast support from many people around the nation who had been touched by her story. It is now Kemba’s mission to fight lenghty sentences for first time non-violent offenders. Smith stated in her bio that she wants many students to realize that their are consequences for their actions. Following her time in prison Kemba Smith finished college at Virginia Union University where she received a degree in social work. She also finished up one year of law school at Howard University. Currently, she is hard at work on her foundation, which is entitled the Kemba Smith Foundation. Did you know that December 1st marks National Aids Day? 123 new HIV cases and 56 AIDS cases were reported in Wake County between January and September of 2011 according to the 2011 North Carolina Surveillance Report. Make sure that you are aware what’s going on in your body, as well as your partners. Many people are not even aware that they are infected.... Testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) is available on campus at the Student Health Center.

CJ, The Wednesday, Oct. 26 edition of Technician did indeed reprint a version of the photo that caused controversy over the summer. However, contrary to your claim that it doesn’t make a statement and does not enhance the story, I feel the exact opposite way. The story was about hate speech on campus, and that photo is completely representative of hate speech on campus and therefore a legitimate reason for republishing it. If it were not representative of this very important issue, then we would not have run it. Our staff stands completely behind the decision to run it. In reference to your issues with the staff editorial, I’d like to point out that there is a difference between an article and an editorial. Articles are objective; columns and editorials are subjective. While it’s completely fine to disagree with our opinion on various issues, you made some pretty unfounded claims regarding what the editorial actually said. We never discouraged students and faculty from protesting hate speech – in fact, we commended them for always responding quickly and appropriately when hate incidents occur. You questioned why we would encourage the hate of people based on characteristics they can’t physically change – we never encouraged this. We also never encouraged people to threaten particular groups. Please make the necessary corrections in your online and print publications. The only thing factually wrong with the editorial was the title, since there are indeed caveats to free speech. In reference to your statement that “if the person who wrote those messages on the GLBT Center door actually were to go on a killing spree around campus, the Technician would agree with that as well,” I feel particularly insulted. It’s insulting that you would think we would endorse a killing spree on campus and I ask that you consider apologizing for that particular statement. Technician did not and never has advocated for violence. I’m not exactly sure how you extrapolated that view from our editorial. Saying hate speech is free speech is a far cry from saying we would endorse the action of murder. We also never said we agree with the messages hate speech promotes. In fact, we all found the messages spray-painted on the GLBT Center to be highly offensive. I didn’t realize there were sides to take on the issue of whether hate speech is free speech or not. I’d rather have the right to free speech then to be silenced on every issue someone disagrees with me about. In a statement to UNC System President Erskine Bowles after racial slurs were painted in the Free Expression Tunnel directed toward President-elect Barack Obama, the ACLU said: “…the First Amendment to the United States Constitution protects speech no matter how offensive its content, so long as it does not fall into very narrow exceptions. As a court long ago explained in the infamous Skokie case, ‘it is better to allow those who preach racial hate to expend their venom in rhetoric rather than to be panicked into embarking on the dangerous course of permitting the government to decide what its citizens may say and hear.’” This statement still applies today, whether talking about racial hate incidents or sexuality hate incidents. To reiterate, hate speech is still free speech. Sincerely,

Dear Laura Wilkinson, I appreciate you taking out the time to write a response to the Nubian Message concerning the editorial which was written in last week’s edition. While I stand firmly by my opinions stated in the article that was published last week, I can understand how my words regarding the killing spree could have been seen as offensive. It was my not my intention to insult you personally or the Technician. The point I was trying to make was that sometimes words can turn into actions. By implying that “all speech is free speech”, it did appear that all speech was accepted by the Technician from reading that article. However, the rest of editorial was my personal opinion and I do not feel that it should not be something which should be apologized for. Like it was stated in the response, we are entitled to our opinions whether others disagree with them or not.

The much anticipated game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, finally hit stores early Tuesday morning and what a launch it was. With pre-order sales topping its predecessor, Call of Duty: Black Ops, it was a big day for gamers across the world. Developers hit gamers with a number of titles in the past couple of months that will be sure to give both sides a Merry Christmas. With the NBA lockout still in affect, these games are the only thing some people have to look forward to in the upcoming months. Being a gamer myself, I will discuss whether or not some of these games live up to their hype.

Starting at Small Forward: “NBA 2K12” IGN Rating 9.5/10 My Rating 9/10
Like Kevin Durant or Lebron James, NBA 2K12 is a force to be reckoned with inside the gaming world. Taking the title as the best basketball game franchise ever, 2K sports have shut down its opponent in NBA Live to become the only basketball game on the market. I must congratulate NBA 2K12 for releasing such a great game even with the NBA lockout looming overhead. The only reason NBA 2K12 doesn’t get a 10/10 from me is because 2K11 was better graphically. Some of the players look almost alien-like and don’t resemble their real life counter parts at all. Another big reason that it didn’t get a 10/10 is because NBA 2K11 focused solely on the greatest basketball player of all time Michael Jordan. In my opinion, NBA 2K11 will always be the greatest basketball game ever or at least for quite some time. Smoother game play, tons of new modes, and amazing new features make this game a definite top pick.

Starting at Shooting Guard: “Batman Arkham City” IGN Rating 9.5/10 My Rating 10/10 The Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant of its gaming genre, Batman Arkham City will go down in history as one of the best games of 2011. Receiving universal critical acclaim Batman Arkham City, just like its predecessor Batman Arkham Island, revolutionized superhero fighting games. Receiving nothing less than a 9 from any review score, Batman is a must have title for any gamer. A personal favorite of mine, Batman Arkham City, has the best of it all: graphics, game play, story line, side missions, fighting, etc. which were all put together in great detail to make a masterpiece of a game.

Starting at Point Guard: “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3” IGN Rating 9/10 My Rating 9.5/10 Most basketball teams run their offense through the point guard, and it’s only fitting that a Call of Duty game be named the starter seeing as it pretty much runs the gaming world. Just like the reigning NBA MVP Derrick Rose, Modern Warfare or any Call of Duty game always steps up to the plate to make the big plays. Should Modern Warfare 3 be considered the greatest game out? Maybe not, but in my opinion it should hold the title as the best 1st person shooter. With its fast pace gun fights, action packed campaign and multiplayer, and its new Elite player ranking system, Modern Warfare 3 is already selling out in stores and will be breaking records in no time. No leisure or pro player should be without this game. Is this game worth $60? YES. Is this game worth standing in line until 2:00 am for the pre-order release? YES. Is this game the game of the year and what you have finally been waiting for? YES.

The Christmas season is right around the corner as shopping has begun. If you are like me it is probably is a hassle trying to figure out what to buy as a gift. Below I am going to list and explain the top 5 things that I’m sure you probably can’t go wrong in giving anyone, at this time of year. 5. Gift Card. As we all know money is never the worst gift to give. Anyone would love to receive money whether it is in the form of paper or a VISA or an AMEX credit card. Not only will a gift card be beneficial for the receiver of the gift, it is also easy for you to obtain. You won’t even have to question if the recipient will be appreciative of your gift. 4. Boots. I know this seem like an odd gift to add to the top list of things to get but oddly enough boots are on some people’s Christmas list this year. If you have not noticed it’s starting to get cold and females are starting to change their wardrobes to match the season. And almost every girl who walks around campus has at least one pair of boots they have worn already. However you may be wondering, why give boots when people already wearing some, well because boots are just like regular shoes. It doesn’t hurt to have more than one pair, especially in different color and style. So help protect someone’s feet for the winter by buying them boots. And don’t limit that gift to just females; guys still wear boots as well, just not the knee high boots. 3. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Now this may be just a one-sided gift but I’m sure it’s a gift that will excite many men, and women, if they have not already pre-ordered this game. Call of Duty, according to GameSpot.com, is a single person shooter game which tells the continued storyline of the US forces struggling with the invasion of the Russian Federation. This game can be played online with other players which makes it more exciting. This game was just released yesterday, November 8, 2011, and can be played on PC, Xbox, and PS3. 2.iPhone 4S. Many people have been supporting the Android, but once word has gotten out about Sprint launching the iPhone 4S some have been jumping on the Sprint bandwagon. The iPhone has a new Dual-Core A5 chip, an 8-megapixel camera, as well as a front facing camera. Talk time can last up to 8 hours a charge. This phone compared to the iPhone 4 has better reception. Stay in contact with your family and friends by asking for this item as a gift. 1. Tablet. A tablet is the newest edition to the technical world that soon many people, especially college students, will join. The tablet in short terms, is pretty much like an enlarged Smartphone and a laptop without the keyboard wrapped in one. Since it is sleek and easier to carry around compared to the laptop, it’s an essential gift that anyone wouldn’t mind receiving. The tablet comes in different sizes, colors, and different manufactures. Most to all of them have a front facing camera for you to be able to video chat, and there is plenty of storage space. You can’t go wrong in asking for a tablet as well as giving one this Christmas. All of these items are items that are considered to be great gifts for this Christmas season. Whether it is asked for or not, I’m sure no one would be upset if any of these items were given to them. So go ahead and get into the holiday giving spirit early and be a blessing into someone else’s life.

Hailing from Enfield, North Carolina, Keyuntae “Killa Key” Ward has been working diligently within the music scene. At a young age he expressed his passion for music. I am proud to present to you the first issue of “The Nubian Message,” NCSU’s first AfricanAmerican newspaper. It’s been a long time coming, but we’re finally here and yes, we’re here to stay!
Be sure to pick up this special edition which will be the last edition of the Nubian Message for the 2011 Fall Semester.
Despite the enthusiasm most of us have regarding the newspaper, there are many people, all different racial groups, who either do not understand the purpose of the newspaper, or are simply totally against it. Realizing that we can’t please everyone (nor will we ever attempt to), I hope that I can reach some of these people by explaining briefly the reasons for creating and the purposes of “The Nubian Message.”
It has been a pretty good year for the Nubian Message, and we hope that you will continue to support us as we enter 2012.
As many people know, African American students across the country have been speaking out against what we feel to be unfair conditions on our campuses. At N.C. State, one of our main concerns has been unfair and unjust media coverage of the African American community on this campus. As hard as we have tried, our cries for justice have not been heard and our proposed solutions to our media problems have not been accepted thus far. Rather than sit around and wait for some fair coverage by that other paper on campus, “The Nubian Message has been created to represent the African American community at NCSU totally, truthfully, and faithfully. In doing so, we shall cover every aspect of African-American life at NCSU. The vision I have for this newspaper, which is shared by everyone involved with it, is ambitious, but not unrealistic. “The Nubian Message should and will be the media voice for African – Americans at N.C. State. It will be a publication in which people can learn about different aspects of our culture, as well as find useful information about State’s campus. With the concentrated efforts of our people, this vision can become a reality very soon. Finally, it is important that every one realize that this newspaper is not a racist publication. We are not seeking superiority, nor segregation; all we want is an equal voice on this campus and with the The Nubian Message, the door is open for us to have that voice.

To many of us, male or female, our hair is important. The salons and barbershops we visit are not just a place of business but they are a part of our culture. Movies such as “Barbershop”, “Beauty Shop” and Chris Rock’s “Good Hair, Bad Hair” show how deep hair care is rooted into our communities.3 However, it is well known that good hair care is sometimes hard to find. Many of us are away from home so it’s difficult to find a place that you are comfortable with. Many times if you do find a decent shop, it’s not a secret, so it’s often crowded. I advise you to go beyond Western and Hillsborough St. If you aren’t happy with the shop you currently go to, you have the right to take your business somewhere else. The main things to keep in mind when looking for a new shop are cleanliness, pricing, location, services and customer service. All of these will contribute to you becoming a frequent and happy customer. You should see how well a shop is kept before you let any clippers or combs near your scalp! Most shops list their pricing but it doesn’t hurt to ask. Also make sure they are familiar with your type of hair. If you’re natural, find a shop that specializes and helps their customers take care of natural hair. If you’re prone to those razor bumps at the nape of your neck, talk to your barber and make sure he/she understands that. You can also ask a stylist/barber about their past experience. Dear Nubian Queen, I am a freshman and I am stressing out about the remainder of the semester and the fact that final exams are approaching. I need advice on what you think may be a good idea to help relieve some stress and simply calm my nerves. How can I learn to relax with this being such a stressful time of the year? Sincerely, Stressed Out Dear Stressed Out, Do not let this time of the year stress you out. There are lots of activities you can do to help relieve some of the stress that has built up over the semester. First of all, you should go ahead and look at your exam schedule and put your exam times on a calendar. Next, you should plan what days and times you will study for each particular exam. This will help you from feeling overloaded when exam time actually hits. Also, note that there are only three more weeks of classes, one week, which includes thanksgiving break and another, which is dead week. So just hang in there, because the semester is almost over. There are many activities you can participate in to help relieve some built up stress. One of my favorite things to do is workout. Doing some mild cardio can really relieve stress. Some types of cardio I like to do is jogging, using the bike, jumping rope, etc. If you want to do something more relaxing, yoga and pilates are both great exercises to participate in. If you can find some time to go to the gym and give 100% I’m sure you will see your stress levels decreasing. Another idea to relieve some stress is simply having fun. Spending times with friends and family can be good for the soul. Try going out to dinner, going bowling, watching movies, going out for ice cream, etc. Getting your mind off schoolwork for a while by doing something you enjoy is always healthy for the mind. This will give you a break from the tedious studying. Some other activities you can do are writing poetry, listening to music, painting, reading a book you enjoy, or even retail therapy. Just try and do a couple of activities that I have already listed and remember to relax and I’m sure the amount of stress will lower. Ways to Protect Yourself: Tips on Purchasing Condoms • Buy only latex or polyurethane condoms lubricated with a spermicide. Condoms come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and textures. • Look for condoms with a reservoir tip, designed to give room for the ejaculate. • Check the expiration date. • For oral intercourse, purchase non-lubricated latex condoms or dental damns for oral sex performed on a female. If you feel the condom break or slip during intercourse, pull out and use a new one. You can contract a STD at anytime when you engage in unprotected intercourse. Limit the number of partners you have. The more partners you have the greater your risk for contracting a STD.
