We know that starting a new school is about more than just a change of classroom. It’s about feeling seen, supported, and part of something special. That’s why we take great care to ensure every girl feels at home from the outset. Whether it’s through tailored induction days, buddy systems, or help with practicalities like uniforms, transport, or curriculum choices, we’re committed to helping your daughter settle in quickly and confidently.

Welcome to Newcastle High School for Girls

NHSG is more than a school - it’s a vibrant, nurturing community where girls are encouraged to be bold, curious, and ambitious. Here, your daughter will be known as an individual, supported in her wellbeing, and inspired to discover her strengths and passions.

We’re proud to welcome families from across the UK and around the world, and we look forward to making your move a truly positive experience.

Newcastle High School for Girls: Empowering Girls for over 150 Years

Newcastle High School for Girls (NHSG) is the leading all-girl independent school in the North East, with a proud legacy dating back to 1876. For 150 years, we’ve been empowering girls and young women to become leaders, trailblazers, and world shapers equipped not just with academic excellence, but with the confidence and character to thrive.

As an all-through school, we welcome girls from age three through to Sixth Form, offering a seamless educational journey that builds year on year. Our broad and ambitious curriculum is delivered by inspiring teachers who understand how girls learn best, ensuring that by the time your daughter reaches 18, she is fully prepared for the next stage of her life whether that’s university, a career, or a bold new adventure.

Our academic results at GCSE and A Level consistently place us among the top schools in the region, and our pupils go on to pursue their dreams at leading universities across the UK and beyond. But success at NHSG is about more than grades - it’s about learning without limits. With superb facilities, cutting-edge resources, and a future-focused approach, every girl is encouraged to explore her passions and discover her strengths.

Complementing our excellent academic programme, pastoral care at NHSG is award-winning and central to our educational offer. We are proud recipients of the Debrett’s Award for Outstanding Pastoral Care, reflecting our deep commitment to wellbeing and personal growth.

All girls at NHSG are supported by a strong pastoral approach where every member of staff is responsible for their wellbeing. Alongside this, specialist wellbeing initiatives and mentoring programmes provide additional layers of care.

We know each girl as an individual and we place great importance on building the girls’ confidence, curiosity and creativity within our community of kindness, ensuring that all pupils thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

This ethos of care and empowerment is strengthened by our place within the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST). As one of the 25 schools within the GDST, NHSG is an integral part of the UK’s largest network of independent girls’ schools which has been at the forefront of excellence in girls’ education for over 150 years. Being part of the GDST family means our pupils benefit from the exceptional resources and expertise of a community focused on putting girls first, as well as from unique initiatives such as GDST-wide scholarships, leadership programmes, and career mentoring alongside a huge range of GDST sporting opportunities and rallies. This connection ensures that every NHSG girl is supported by a powerful family that extends far beyond Newcastle, opening doors to lifelong friendships and professional networks long into the future.

And while our reach is national, our roots are proudly local. Located in Sandyford and Jesmond, in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne, NHSG is easily accessible via excellent transport links and a comprehensive school bus service. But what truly sets us apart is our warm, purposeful community - a school where every girl is known, supported, and inspired to be the very best version of herself.

Girls can join NHSG at any stage from Nursery through to Sixth Form. Our curriculum is broad and ambitious, with a strong emphasis on STEM, the arts, and languages. For pupils arriving from overseas, we offer dedicated support for English as an Additional Language (EAL), ensuring every girl can thrive academically and socially.

Entry Assessments

The assessments are age appropriate so for example a girl of Nursery age will come along with you to meet the our Early Years Phase Leader so that we can learn more about her, while a girl of Senior School age will complete an entrance examination and have an interview with one of our Senior Leadership Team. Our Admissions team will guide you through this process

Relocating from Abroad

Our team is experienced in guiding families through the visa process and helping pupils integrate smoothly into school life. We offer flexible admissions timelines, EAL support, and a strong pastoral programme to help international students feel at home.
