Poletski’s Appliance Center Makes Its Move By Meg Wall-Wild

he November grand opening of the new Poletski’s Appliance Center in Eureka’s Henderson Center was celebrated not only with the business tradition of a ribbon cutting, but also a family tradition: posing the newest family addition in a washing machine (but not to wash, of course). The cutest baby with a pink bow peeked out from a front-load washer to have her photo taken. She also had her photo taken in a spindle model, too, just like her mom and uncles did before her. Rick Poletski is one proud business owner and grandpa. In 1982, when Al and Donna opened Poletski’s Appliance Repair, they concentrated on servicing appliances. Rick grew up cleaning washers and dryers, and mopping ﬂoors as he absorbed the family business. He graduated from Eureka High School in 1988, and then joined the Marine Corps. After serving in Desert Storm, Rick returned to Humboldt. By 1992 he was up to his elbows in stoves and refrigerators. The Poletskis moved the business to 341 W Harris St. in Eureka and expanded into retail. Always with an eye to keeping their customers happy, the business oﬀered scratch and dent discounts, as well as used appliances. By 2008, Rick bought out his parents and settled into running the store

with his wife, Dama. He proudly declares her “the hardest worker in the company, for sure!” He lists her impressive array of skills, including bookkeeping and logistics. Dama attended Arcata High School and met Rick after they’d graduated, when mutual friends set them up. “We had our ﬁrst date at Mazzotti’s Italian Restaurant. She came through the doors like a breath of fresh air,” says Rick. Although the Poletski children started out inside a washer, their paths took them elsewhere. The proud father says, “Jacob will be 19 and is training to be a pipeline welder,” adding 21-year-old Tyler is studying to be a physical therapist and 30-yearold daughter Maddison is an accountant. Poletski bought Fortuna Eel River Appliance in 2010, moving it two doors down to its current corner location at 1001 Main St. “The farmers market is on the side street every week during the season,” he says. He enjoys being part of community life, which inspired him to purchase the empty JoAnn’s Fabrics building in Eureka, a stone’s throw from the local farmers market. “We joined the Henderson Center community.” The new showroom makes it easy to see how an appliance can also be a design detail. “Our customers deserve a quality

experience. We remodeled the old store for more than just the normal. [It’s] a place that looks good, like the interior of a stylish apartment,” Rick says. He is also excited about advances in technology. But he doesn’t wax poetic about Bluetooth capability or apps that allow you to tweak your freezer’s temperature from the other side of the world. Instead, he focuses on energy and water savings, like in laundry. “In cooking, induction magnetic heat is fast and efficient.” He adds, “Digital price tags mean that our prices can automatically change to give the best price to our customers.” Relocating a few blocks west was well worth the substantial effort to move all those appliances. (Think of it like helping that friend move his refrigerator, only to find out he has a whole collection of them.) “The foot and traffic counts are better. And we have a better parking lot. We are already seeing an improvement in business,” says Rick. It doesn’t hurt that Poletski’s Appliance Center is now across the street from the temptations of Fresh Freeze. “We might have to walk around the block a few times after one of their malts.” Some residents are just noticing the move. refer to it as the JoAnns Fabric building. We still do when directing customers to our new location. We hope in time it becomes the Poletski Appliance building.” That should not take long, as he says the exterior glow-up has already made a diﬀerence. “We get so many comments on the exterior paint.” The Poletskis’ love of sports led them to sponsor local golf tournaments. Poletski’s Appliance Center gives more than cheers to Cal Poly Tech’s Lumberjacks, too. But the community support that made Rick

smile is the art that adorns the Henderson Center store’s windows. “It’s Grant Elementary School … student artwork,” he says, a public exhibit for the smallest of artists.

When Rick finished the sentence “My Humboldt Life is,” his love of this unique place came shining through. “Outside recreation with the beauty of the redwoods, close proximity to the Pacific Ocean and a hometown feel.” He values the opportunities, too. “Eureka is so different from a large metropolitan area,” he

says. “I have ability to interact with my customers in the community because I see them everywhere, in restaurants and stores. I run into them a lot.” Not surprising when you realize that Rick and his family have served Humboldt for more than 40 years. He means it when he says, “Come in and see the work we did!” ■

my Ogle is enjoying a Shelter Cove December. “It feels like we finally got our summer,” she says, noting the warm temperatures, sunshine and calm waters along the coastline. “We always get kind of a good shoulder season because the weather is beautiful.” She’s in the right place to enjoy it, too, on the patio of the recently renovated Mario’s Marina Bar, where she has served as “ringleader” on behalf of the bar’s out-of-town owners for the last five years. In that time, the spot has once again become a local social hub with craft cocktails and lately a spot for locally sourced and pop-up dining, from sliders to sushi. Mario’s, Ogle explains, was originally a shepherd’s hut back when there were sheep and other livestock in the hills. It opened as a bait and tackle shop serving the fishers and their then thriving industry before evolving into a bar and restaurant. What was always there was the view, a stunning panorama to the west over the Pacific Ocean and, to the south, the Sinkyone Wilderness. On a clear day, she says you can see all the way down to Fort Bragg. “I went to Mario’s when it was an old dive bar,” says Ogle, a veteran of the North Coast’s restaurant scene. Originally, she hails from Fremont but moved to Humboldt County in 2006 at 18 to attend then Humboldt State University. She spent a year away in Portland, Oregon, to attend culinary school and returned to work in the kitchens of Luke’s Joint, the Other Place, Masaki’s Kyoto Japanese Restaurant and Larrupin’. She also tended bar at Richards’ Goat Tavern & Tea Room. After restaurants reopened in the wake of the COVID shutdowns, Ogle was working in a restaurant in Trinidad. There, she was recruited to help reopen Mario’s. In 2021, she started the grueling grunt work of cleaning and remodeling with Alex Rush and Yaijara Padilla. “I could not have done it without them,” she says with a deep exhale. The added banquet room has hosted events and birthdays, and with further improvements planned, Ogle looks forward to branching out even more. “We’re really getting wedding ready,” she says. “We’ve dabbled in it and done a couple small parties, but we’ve got the upper beer garden and the lower.” Both are on the cliff side and feature a fire pit. There’s a stage for bands and, of course, that view. Her fiancé Ray Kosma has done a lot of work on the building aspect as well, with a “super hyper custom” eye toward using local labor. The resulting “nautical glam” is a nod to the bar’s past, says Ogle, “But’s fun, it’s alive, it’s very Shelter Cove.” The same could be said for the offerings at Mario’s these days. Ogle keeps a garden at her home, where 1,000-foot elevation and warm temperatures help her grow all kinds of ingredients for the menu. Newly planted citrus trees, herbs, edible flowers, melons and cucumbers find their way into cocktails, whether mashed, muddled or stirred. For a possibly overwhelmed first timer still reeling from the scenery,

she recommends the Earl Greyhound, with its sweet and salty fig leaf rim, fragrant Earl Grey tea, grapefruit and honey, with or without the vodka. Warm weather notwithstanding, winter drinks are having their moment right now, including Ogle’s house-made eggnog with a vegan option. Kosma is Cuban, so you’ll find coquito, a traditional spiced coconut cocktail, as well. There are espresso drinks, hot cider and hot chocolate to beat an evening chill, and Ogle recommends the Eggnog Latte with whiskey. High Tide in the Cove has found a home in the kitchen at Mario’s Marina Bar five days a week, making ceviche, fish and chips, salmon burgers and the coconut-rich Brazilian fish stew moqueca. “They’ll try anything, really,” says Ogle. The smash fries, house cut and topped everything you’d find on a smashburger from sauce to onions, is a favorite of hers. “I get mine with jalapeño,” she says with a little hum. “So sood. I try not to eat them every day.” The garden comes into play again for the menu, as does a little foraging. If a mushroom hunt goes well, the spoils show up in the specials. Likewise, the windfall from a Shelter Cove resident’s pear tree meant the Bosc beauties featured in everything from fritters to salads. Chef Pangnou Vang’s sushi pop-ups on Sundays are drawing a following, too. Vang, formerly chef at Sushi Blue, brings skill and creativity to her takes on poké, traditional nigiri and colorful rolls, and Ogle marvels at her luck making it happen. Sundays are open music jam nights, so while Vang is making sushi, locals arrive toting instruments and tuning up to play. It is, as promised, fun, alive and very Shelter Cove. “It’s been really beautiful,” says Ogle. ■ DECEMBER 2025 • My Humboldt LIFE

Garberville Rotary Installs Peace Pole at Garberville Town Square

he Garberville Rotary Club, in collaboration with the Garberville Town Square Board, is honored to announce the installation of a Peace Pole in the center of Garberville Town Square. The unveiling took place on Sunday, Sept. 21, 2025, coinciding with the United Nations International Day of Peace. The dedication ceremony included live music by The Cronies and remarks from several community leaders and representatives Peace Poles are internationally recognized monuments that bear the inscription “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in multiple languages. Since the first pole was planted in Japan in 1955,

more than 200,000 Peace Poles have been installed in over 200 countries and territories worldwide. Each serves as a silent yet powerful reminder that peace is possible — and that communities everywhere share in the responsibility of fostering understanding, empathy, and respect. “A primary vision of founding and developing the Garberville Town Square has been to promote peace by having a shared community space,” said Robie Tenorio. “Nothing aids the peacefulness of a diverse and opinionated community more than a lovely, calm place open to all, where residents and visitors can gather, relax, party, and discuss. The Peace Pole is a

symbol of such coming together both local and international. You are always welcome here to meet your neighbors and exchange food and ideas.” Rotary’s Commitment to Peace For Rotary International, peace is not just an abstract idea — it is one of the organization’s seven Areas of Focus and a guiding principle for action. Clubs around the world sponsor Peace Pole projects as living monuments to peace and fellowship. “Every peace pole planted is a beacon of Rotary’s enduring belief: that peace is not just a dream, but a shared effort,” said Darrin Guerra, President of Garberville Rotary Club. “It

reminds us that even small symbols can inspire great change when rooted in service, empathy, and global fellowship. By planting these markers of hope, Rotary advances its mission of service above self, promoting peace, cultural awareness, and global collaboration.” The Garberville Rotary Club has been actively involved in service projects across Southern Humboldt, from supporting local youth programs to enhancing public spaces. The installation of this Peace Pole reflects both Rotary’s global mission and the club’s local commitment to fostering a stronger, more connected community. ■

Fortuna CERT Team Assists CAL FIRE with Restoration Project, Continues Mission of Community Preparedness

he Fortuna Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) recently dedicated time from their busy schedules to help restore one of CAL FIRE’s local signs, demonstrating their ongoing commitment to community service and disaster readiness. The project highlights the strong partnership between CERT and CAL FIRE, as well as their shared goal of supporting public safety across Humboldt County. The sign refinishing project was led by Emily Mazzone-Clementi, leader of Fortuna Teen CERT, who oversaw the ANSWERS TO BRR AND GRR

effort from start to finish, along with Dr. Lane Thomsen of the Fortuna Junior Academy. Two youth groups collaborated on the restoration: Fortuna Teen CERT and the Fortuna Pathfinder youth, a local organization similar to Scouts and part of the Seventh-day Adventist Youth program. Their teamwork underscores the important role young volunteers play in supporting and strengthening the community. Battalion Chief Andrew Gonzales of the CAL FIRE Fortuna Command Center expressed his appreciation for the team and the ongoing partnership. “We are grateful for the Fortuna CERT volunteers and the work they do,” he said. “Whether responding to emergencies or supporting community projects like this, their efforts strengthen our mission and help keep residents safe. Their dedication is recognized and truly appreciated.” The Fortuna Emergency Command Center supports CAL

FIRE operations by handling emergency communications and dispatching resources throughout the region. The center plays an important role in ensuring timely and coordinated response during incidents. Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) are trained volunteers who empower communities to be ready, resilient and confident in the face of emergencies. Through hands-on learning and essential preparedness training, CERT

equips individuals and organizations with the practical skills needed to protect themselves and support others during the critical first hours and days of a disaster. Fortuna’s CERT team operates under the guidance and support of the Fortuna Fire District and works closely with other CERT members throughout the Humboldt County CERT Council. HCAOG Releases Draft Long Range Plan Identifying More Than $1 billion in Regional Transportation Infrastructure Needs

he Humboldt County Association of Governments (HCAOG), our regional transportation planning agency, is inviting residents to help shape the future of mobility in Humboldt County through the 2026 Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) Update. The RTP is a policy document that guides transportation priorities and funding for the next twenty years. It influences everything from road maintenance and safety improvements to public transit, bike and pedestrian facilities, and planning for zero-emission vehicles. A draft of the document titled Varieties in Rural Options of Mobility (VROOM) 2026 – 2046 is now available to review at https://www.hcaog.net/regional-transportation-plan-update. The comment period on the public draft will close on Monday December 29th. Community input – whether made in-person, by email, or through the online survey - will directly inform strategies to make travel safer, more efficient, and more accessible for everyone but especially for vulnerable users such as seniors, youth, people with disabilities, pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit riders. “The transportation system is our region’s largest, and arguably most critical investment,” said Brendan Byrd, Executive 22 My Humboldt LIFE • DECEMBER 2025

Director of HCAOG. “We want to hear from as many folks as possible about their transportation-related priorities so that we can help make sure our regional investments continue to reflect our local needs.” The draft plan identifies over $1 billion in funding needs for local streets and transportation infrastructure projects such as road rehabilitation, trails, bridges, interchanges, roundabouts, and bike lanes. In the public transportation sector, proposed long-term projects would increase service to every 15-minutes, add Sunday buses, and modernize the fleet at a cost of $300 million. Access Humboldt Extends BOLDtFEST Short Film Incubator Submission Deadline to January 5, 2026

ccess Humboldt announced today that it is extending the submission deadline for its annual BOLDtFEST Script-to-Screen Short Film Incubator. Filmmakers, writers, and creators now have until January 5, 2026 to submit their short film scripts for consideration. BOLDtFEST is a year-round filmmaking incubator designed to empower Humboldt County residents to bring original stories from script to screen. Selected projects receive access to workshops, mentorship, production support, equipment, and crew collaboration opportunities — culminating in a red-carpet premiere at the historic Eureka Theater. “Interest in BOLDtFEST continues to grow,” said Christina Marie Jeffers of Access Humboldt. “By extending the deadline, we’re opening the door for more local storytellers to participate, refine their scripts, and take advantage of the unique resources this program provides.”

Each day, we provide platforms that help Humboldt County stay informed, connected, and creative. We operate WAVE cable channel 7, Optimum/Altice 8,10,11, & 12 and KZZH 96.7 LP-FM radio. We broadcast original, local programming, from movies to public service announcements and everything in between. Town halls, creative stories, raucous city meetings, educational modules and more appear on our cable channels, YouTube channel, and streaming at AccessHumboldt.net. We provide unedited, fulllength meeting coverage of city councils, county boards, and community commissions. Our mission is to make civil servants accessible to the people they serve. When you need to know what decisions are being made and who is making them, Access Humboldt is there.

We support local voices that might otherwise go unheard on commercial stations. This includes partnerships with artists, nonprofits, Indigenous communities, youth creators, and underrepresented groups through projects like the Redwoods Listening Post. We DO NOT discriminate against community producers who cannot afford expensive productions. If we receive content in a format we can air, it will air regardless of race, religion, political affiliation, or any other status/identity that might be discriminated against. We broadcast local sports events like Humboldt Roller Derby, amplify civic conversations, and share cultural celebrations that reflect the unique character of our region. We train new content creators. Through our workshops, internships, and member programs, people of all ages can learn video production, radio hosting, editing, and storytelling. You can also access studios, equipment, and airtime to share your work! We host BOLDtFEST, a community-centered short film incubator that brings together writers, directors, and producers to create locally made movies — “Humboldt made, Humboldt displayed” — at the Eureka Theater. Upgraded Citizen RIMS Launches

he Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office has launched a comprehensive update to its Citizen RIMS platform, developed in partnership with Sun Ridge Systems. This modernized system transforms how community members access public safety information, delivering improved functionality and deeper transparency in law enforcement operations. Since establishing the original Citizen RIMS in 2018, the Sheriff’s Office has maintained its commitment to public access of crime and activity data. The enhanced platform significantly expands these capabilities with advanced tools designed to foster greater

community engagement and understanding.The platform now includes comprehensive Stop Data reporting, fully aligned with California’s Racial and Identity Profiling Act (RIPA) of 2015. This addition provides detailed documentation of officer-citizen interactions, demonstrating the department’s dedication to transparent and equitable policing practices. Community members can now explore dynamic incident mapping to identify neighborhood trends and patterns, while enhanced crime statistics feature user-friendly charts and visualizations that make data interpretation more accessible to residents seeking

to understand local safety conditions.The platform serves as a centralized resource for daily media releases, stolen vehicle reports, missing person cases, and recent arrest information. This consolidation ensures residents have streamlined access to critical public safety updates. A security camera registration feature enables residents and business owners to voluntarily register their surveillance systems, creating valuable investigative resources that strengthen collaborative safety efforts throughout Humboldt County.Additional functionality will be introduced in the coming months, including direct service request capabilities that will allow community members to interact with the Sheriff’s Office through the platform.“The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is committed to earning our
