Cannabis and CBD have been providing pain relief to countless humans but what about the pets we love? We sniffed around VetCBD for the lowdown on how it’s developed products with Humboldt-grown flowers for cannabinoids to help four-legged friends. Look around the dispensary and ask yourself how much of the required packaging we go through will end up in landfill. It could be far less. We’ll introduce you to a couple of Humboldt County farms making an effort to decrease waste by using eco-friendly packaging. Read on and find out how you can make choices that work for you and the planet. the world. Where did the time go? Harvest season has arrived in the Emerald Triangle. From seedlings, you nursed and protected them. You watched as their genders showed. You sent the boys off to boarding school, hopefully before any mischief occurred. You fed and nurtured them as they grew, guiding them through each new challenge. Like a mountain lion protecting her young, you held predators at bay. You fenced out the deer, hoping it would also keep the wild pigs from rooting up your babies. Sometimes it didn’t work. You protected their tender roots from the subterranean threats of gophers and moles with sonic deterrent spikes, and supported them with netting or with ties when their branches became

long and the winds picked up. When the rains came, your redoubled efforts kept most of the sopping bud-laden branches from breaking. Through it all, you stayed awake at night worrying over drought, wildfires. There’s more work for you as you prepare to send your girls out into the world, maybe into the medical profession or perhaps recreation, but you find yourself already looking to the challenges of next year. Southern Humboldt County and they produce some of the country’s best cannabis. The annual Feast of Flowers brings these farmers together to share their knowledge and the bounty of Humboldt’s finest. of entries and raised $15,000 for volunteer fire departments. This achievement is all the more impressive knowing the event is only in its second year. It is obvious the community felt the need to celebrate something, too. Moving an agriculture competition from a crowded social to socially distanced event required coordination, flexibility and willing in-kind partners. Entrants dropped their cannabis off at the Country Club, following pandemic guidelines. Deadlines moved back to allow for time needed to judge the flood of entries. KMUD radio’s The Cannabis Show announced the winners on Dec. 7. Judges evaluated the entries on appearance, smell and taste. Honorary Judge Ray Oaks joined the review panel provided by dispensaries, farmers and local businesses: Team Redwood Roots, Team Ridgeline Farms, Team Whitethorn Construction, Team K-Mud, Team Sylvendale, Team Humboldt Seed Company, Team Country Club and Team Humboldt Brand. Full Moon Farms collected a first-place win in Light Dep (Deprived) Sativa for SPK (Sour Patch

Kids) and a second in Full Term Hybrid for its popular Blueberry Muffin Gelato. the judges must rely on their own senses to rank each entry.” Lasseter said the annual Feast of Flowers goals are to stay authentic, be real, celebrate and give back. That is exactly what the 2020 Feast of Flowers accomplished. The event remained community-focused in spite of this year’s unusual challenges. The community stepped up to raise $15,000 even when so many are suffering with limited resources. The donations will be distributed to 150 volunteer fire departments with each receiving $1,000 each. Every dollar will support the crews that risk all to put out wildfires. The Feast of Flowers continues to grow a stronger cannabis community and promote the hard work of family farms. As the U.S. House of Representatives voted to decriminalize cannabis and the country inches towards legalization, regional branding is key to protecting Humboldt’s heritage strains as an economic driver. As with the Taste of Terroir’s encouragement of local wine exploration, the event promotes Humboldt’s niche to attract cannabis tourists. Doherty already has an eye to future feasts. “We can’t wait to see how this competition evolves in the years ahead,” he says. He is also happy proceeds are donated to Humboldt’s volunteer fire departments, saying it “is another win-win for our community.” Keep your calendar open for the 2021 Feast of Flowers. With one COVID-altered event under their belt, whatever comes, the SHVBV and the cannabis farmers of Southern Humboldt are ready. And they look forward to when the Feast of Flowers will again be held in the Southern Humboldt Community Park, where we can all readapt to celebrating together. hese women's stories are so fascinating and all connect in such an organic, successful and supportive way. Let me introduce you to some of the baddest Boss ladies in Humboldt Cannabiz — who by lifting each other up in this industry, elevate all of Humboldt County, and all CannaWomen. Today we meet Lindsey Renner of Native Humboldt & Shenell Kres of Humboldt.Farm. Both of these women are passionate about weed and their individual stories are breathtaking, heartbreaking, incredible and inspirational. We will focus today on their stories and where their two stories intersected and created an amazing business partnership under the name Eureka Distribution. Lindsey herself was adopted, her biological father is Wylacki Indian, but she didn't know for sure that she was native american or even adopted until she was about 12 years old. When she was 12 she decided she wanted to seek out her biological father. She was told by her adopted family that she shouldn't because her bio dad was a criminal because he was cultivating cannabis, and they refused to let her get to know her family. Fast forward to a grown up Lindsey living on her property that she decided to call Native Humboldt Farms. She was living there for about three years, when she reconnected with her biological grandparents. She was on the phone with them, describing to them where her land is located and they said 'we know exactly where you are'. They then guided her on the phone to a part of her land, to a hill behind the cemetery where they told her she'd find a white picket fence, that she said otherwise she never would have even seen nor thought to look for. There, just as her grandparents were on the phone guiding her, was a gravestone of Ellen Hoakland, who passed away when she was two, who was Chow-row's daughter. The land upon which Lindsey started her farm, was actually rightfully hers for multiple generations, and stayed in her family bloodline — even through white incursion. There she stood in present day — reconnected to her deep roots and culture - she said it was an amazing connective experience! Lindsey also shard that her great aunt named Lucy Young decided later in life that she needed to speak out about the history, and there's actually a series of interviews in the archives where she described — in vivid detail, that when she had returned to her village and there hung heavy stench thick in the air. It turned out it was the smell of the men of the tribe who had been shot and then their bodies burned. Lucy Young was then rounded up and taken away from her grandmother never to see her again. Their names were changed, their language was almost completely lost along with any memories or traditions of their culture. When Lindsey recounted these atrocities that her great aunt had described during the series of interviews, where she spoke in both English and the (practically lost) Wailaki language. Lindsey also noted, when she started growing in 2008, it was so taboo, she couldn't say what she did for a living. Look at where we are now. It took a lot of sacrifice, sweat, persistence and tenacity to get here, but she made it! She says in 2018 she linked with Shenell and just this year, during COVID, they've started their distribution company together. Like Lindsey, Shenell said she became obsessed with

cannabis at a young age. Her father smoked it but she always had to keep it hidden. She says she was bullied as a kid, she was overweight and had self-esteem issues and weed was an escape from that. She also soon saw the commerce as well as the community and she says it totally changed her life and she's never looked back. A lot of people who looked down on her when she was younger, are now asking her where they can find her products in the dispensary. Now that it's legal, even some of her family members who shamed her for doing the same thing, smoke cannabis. Success is the best revenge — and after a long struggle, Shenell is at the top of her game. From dabbling with heavier drugs, going to rehab, she decided to remove herself from her environment. With $80 in her pocket, she headed for California with a strong focus on cannabis. She indicates her family support is amazing - but she really felt a neeed she needed to figure out things on her own. She was homeless, but she travelled extensively, visited 40 different states, met tons of new people — basically made the best of it. She returned to Humboldt, got a trim job in Honeydew, and she was the only other person there. It was really scary and from that point she promised herself she would never work for anyone ever again. We agreed that for women's security alone, legalization has been a very good thing! Lindsey met Shenell back in 2018 and here in Humboldt, your actions speak louder than your words — although word is bond here too! Lindsey had a few times where she really needed a hand — and Shenell came through — solid — each time. So when Lindsey had had about enough of the large multi-million dollar weed distribution company who basically treated her as a small fish, and who eventually went bankrupt themselves, she decided to take the distribution into her own hands and called upon Shenell to partner with her. The rest is recent history and more success to come for both of these boss ladies in their new company Eureka Distribution. thing made of plastic. Maybe lots of somethings. Each day approximately 8 million pieces of plastic end up in our oceans. It’s mind boggling — there are currently around 5.8 trillion macro and micro pieces floating with the fish. While a nice joint might alleviate the stress from a hard day, it won’t help reduce the stress we’re putting on Mother Earth. But fortunately, some cannabis producers in the Emerald Triangle, including Humboldt County, have given eco-friendly packaging for their products a great deal of thought and investment. Carly and Misha Vandel, both Humboldt State University grads, own and operate ABOVE, located high atop Blake Mountain in the eastern part of the county. Known as Lucy Gulch Estate Farm, Misha, who has degree in microbiology, purchased it in 2014. His goal was to develop the raw 160 acres into a licensed, sustainable cannabis farm but he was beset with obstacles after the Mad River Complex Fire the following year decimated much of the land. The year after that, a record-breaking wet winter crushed a newly erected shop. But Misha, who loves being outdoors and working with plants, remained undaunted. “It’s a pretty inspiring attitude that he has ... he really is the backbone and the visionary of this whole thing,” says Carly, who has a degree in marketing. She describes the mountaintop farm as “stunningly gorgeous.” And they aim to keep it that way. Employees avoid driving back and forth on the mountain any more than necessary to keep carbon emissions down. “We grow primarily with the power of the sun, which really reduces our carbon footprint as opposed to indoor growing, which is typically fueled by fossil fuels,” Carly says, her voice radiating pride. The branded product that ABOVE sells are prerolls, for which the company purchases hempbased plastic tubes from Sana Packaging. Carly says their company is committed to choosing packaging options that are not petroleum-based and are instead renewable and regenerative. “It hurts my heart to use single-use plastic,” she says. “I don’t understand why we have not banned or put a giant tax on single-use plastic. ... It blows my mind.” ABOVE also uses boxes made by a company that is run completely on wind energy and vegetable-based dyes that won’t be toxic for the environment if they inadvertently wind up in landfill. With a limited menu of items, ABOVE doesn’t

have a lot of different packaging needs right now. Nor, according to Carly, does it have deep pockets. “We’re the little guy. ... It definitely takes a chunk. … We could be making more money if we went with a super cheap plastic tube.” The cheap stuff costs around $ 0.07 versus $ 0.25 per unit. Future plans for increasing their product line will evolve slowly since, as she notes, “Being self-funded, we have to only take on so many new endeavors a year.” Joseph Jacovini owns and operates Vesuvio Gardens farms and Varsity Cannabis Co., located in the Whitethorn and Honeydew areas of Southern Humboldt along the Mattole River. A formerly dreadlocked follower of the Grateful Dead, Joseph grew up an Italian Catholic neighborhood in Philadelphia. Interested in cannabis from a young age, he began cultivating it indoors when he was in his 20s, taking trips to Amsterdam to purchase seeds. He managed to stay one step ahead of the law for more than two decades on the East Coast, but cannabis laws became more restrictive. His passion for the Dead introduced him to the opposite coast and he wound up in Southern Humboldt, eventually managing multiple operations. With two farms and two more planned, Jacovini, in his late 40s now, has his dispensing and manufacturing licenses, and will soon have a distribution license. He’s proud to have followed the path to legalization and become the owner of a cafe in Whitethorn, too. Practicing environmentally friendly cultivation and harvesting methods on Vesuvio Gardens, his philosophy embraces the practices of fair trade and sustainability. “It shows in [the quality of] my weed. I’m not one of those guys trying to sell out.” Using eco-friendly packaging is a given. “The amount of [plastic-encased] pre-rolls, the amount of jars, the amount of everything ... where’s it all going?” he asks. It’s a wonder to him that environmentally sustainable packaging isn’t mandatory. Or simpler. Jacovini, who describes himself as a “vertical” business owner, needs a great number of different packaging materials. “It’s so

incredibly frustrating the amount of people I have to talk to,” he says, noting the hurdles of ordering all the pieces he needs from disparate sources. “It would be nice to call just one company, sit down, and be like, I need you to do this, this and this ... but you just can’t.” “It’s daunting,” he admits, and relates a story of a product that requires a jar and a lid, yet only one part of it (the lid) is made from 100 percent eco-friendly materials. He’s also discouraged about the volume he needs to order to keep prices reasonable, and that environmentally friendly packaging is “not priced for the little guys.” Presently, only his pre-rolls are sold with 100 percent environmentally friendly packaging, which means Jacovini is not “100 percent happy,” but he’s on the lookout for more. Like ABOVE, he orders many of his supplies from Sana Packaging, a Colorado-based company that caters to the cannabis industry and whose website promotes their “plant-based hemp plastic, 100 percent reclaimed ocean plastic and other sustainable materials.” He also gives kudos to a company called Tree Hugger Containers, which sells jars that are 50 to 70 percent recyclable and are getting “pretty damn close.” And he notes that Sana Packaging and Tree Hugger Containers are now working cooperatively in order to provide sustainable packaging for products such as vape pens, which may need inner and outer boxes, each comprising different materials. While using sustainable packaging is not without challenges, it’s reassuring to know some conscientious cannabis producers in Humboldt County are doing their part to reduce the stress on the planet. I-don’t-know-what-it-is-but-I-like-it jar. It didn’t seem dusty enough to be my old Stella Blue but the earthy scent and the balanced high were pretty reminiscent. I had been given a few Stella Berry starts and, in a nod to Jerry and the boys, crossed it with Blue Dream and a bit of Blueberry Kush. It still took a couple of seasons and several more crosses to finally achieve a plant that was more than just a name, but the end result had good structure, vitality and aroma, and thrived in my little north-facing valley. That experience gave me a deep appreciation for the art of gardening, the necessity of care and attention, and the slow accretion of knowledge that comes only from time and attunement to seasonal variations, the wants of bugs and the vagaries of wind, water and sun entirely unique to each and every backyard. I learned not just how to grow cannabis, but how to grow microbes, how to grow worms and how to grow the earth. I consider that when I try something new, like when I came upon a farm I hadn’t heard of and a varietal just as unknown, one I have come to think of as “Gratitude Grass.”

Every now and then I have an experience that reminds me of what I most love about weed. Four in the afternoon and I wanted a little lift, so I leashed up Bernadette and strolled into one of our local dispensaries, she being a good candidate for the “cute dog discount.” Sure enough, we got a buck off a pre-roll of Nepali Pink, stuffed the dollar back in the tip jar and headed on out. The strain is new to me as is the farm that grew it — ABOVE Cannabis, situated in southeastern Humboldt. It has the unique quality of sitting high on a 4,700-foot mountaintop, the lofty perch providing inspiration for their tagline, “High Elevation Cultivation.” It also offers the ideal climate for this strain that has its origins in the mountains of Hawaii, a sativa dominant cross of Powerline, Hindu Sun and Afghani Pink OG. Weed can make you chatty, anxious or sleepy, or sometimes spark grandiose visions of perhaps building a landlocked barge big enough to contain a shop in which one might drink wine and sample cheese while imagining floating down a river in HUMBOLDTCANNABISMAGAZINE.COM | WINTER 2020

France — an idea whose brilliance might best be recognized if pondered while smoking some Jack Herrer on a front porch at sunset. And then there is weed that simply makes you grateful. And for me, that is Nepali Pink. I sampled some at the end of the day and as I began to make some dinner for Bernadette and me. I found myself remembering how much I appreciated my coffee pot, my spoon, my bowl and my frying pan. I love my frying pan. I turned on my speakers, gave each a little loving pat and soon found myself doing an “I love Humboldt” dance in my kitchen, appreciating my floor, my feet and especially my wool socks for their thickness and deep green vibrancy. I made notes to send overdue letters, gave Bernadette a bone for her contribution and capped the night with a cold Steelhead, pausing to appreciate the 20 years of good times we have had together. And then, best of all, grateful the next morning when I awoke nine hours later to the sun out my window, having slept the whole night through. I’ve tried many varietals recently and generally liked them all. Durban Poison, from UpNorth, pretty much knocked out my communication center for a bit but then made for a really nice walk on the beach. And Key Lime Pie, a Durban/OG cross with a little Cherry Pie thrown in (because who doesn’t like cherry pie?) had a similar effect, though I do remember having had what seemed to be a few clever exchanges with strangers on the street. And because one can’t have pie without trying the cake, I had some Ice Cream Cake before the long trip home that came on like a slow train rolling, gathering steam up U.S. Highway 101, the northbound headlights illuminating the falling rain until finally back home, my driver easing us into the station and later into bed for a good night’s sleep. All of these were really good but will surely soon get mixed up and so refresh my I-don’twhat-it-is-but-I-like-it jar. But not Nepali Pink. I keep it in its cleverly designed triangular box, zipped up in the designated weed pocket of my old backpack, now torn and stitched and laced and for which I continue to have all the gratitude in the world. I don’t know where I will travel to next but meanwhile I appreciate just being home, my neighbors and their barking dogs, the ocean wind whistling through my windows. And so for all of that, I give thanks to Above and below, from the mountain to the sea, good old Humboldt grown. Dave Reagan lives in Manila with his dog Bernadette. along with instructions for cooking, smoking and drinking on cue. In all, we prepped, cooked and paired for three courses. The first course was an elote-style corn with a zesty cilantro-lime butter, paired with a refreshing Lemon-Lavender CANN seltzer water (infused with 2 mg THC and 4 mg CBD), and a White Tahoe Cookies pre-roll (23.89 percent THC) from Aloha Humboldt. Next was a choice of lobster or shrimp with plantain dumplings in a spicy tomato stew over rice. We were given a half-ounce of infused chili finishing oil (10 mg THC) from Potli, which added a burst of flavor and subtle heat to the dish. For a bit of texture, this course included sundried tomato and chili salt crackers from Tempo (2 mg each, 10 per bag). Paired with a WildLand Haze pre-roll (21 percent THC). Lastly, dessert consisted of sweet tamarind balls, paired with a blood orange-infused sparkling water (25

FOR PEOPLE WHO LOVE to go out and smoke, eat and drink in groups, 2020 has been a year of deprivation. The days of casually passing joints around with 12 perfect strangers are on pause. No more intimate pairing dinners where you bask in the shared joy of gastronomic innovation with people outside of your quaran-team bubble. But modern problems require modern solutions. Like so many other businesses faced with surviving the pandemic, Food Flower Future has adapted with the times to create a new kind of socially distant smoke sesh. Before COVID-19, Food Flower Future specialized in creating unique cannabis pairing dinners. Khara Pechtes, the company’s owner, delved into the industry acting as a bridge connecting and cross-promoting cannabis producers, chefs and food-lovers with a casual or curious interest in cannabis. Her events were (and will be again, in a post-vaccine world) elegant social affairs, aimed at promoting community, as well as food and cannabis education. She created spaces where guests could not only consume and smoke controlled dosages of some of California’s finest cannabis, but where they could meet the growers and producers, too. At the core of it all, Pechtes wants her guests to feel connected to the plant’s history: the places it grew, the hands that grew it and the producers innovating new ways to consume it. Prior to the pandemic, attendees of Food Flower Future dinners would experience an elevated, cannabis-infused meal prepared by a chef, paired with cannabis-infused mocktails and prerolls with complementary terpene profiles. Gift bags would go home with each guest, complete with a mixture of samples, coupons and swag from the sponsoring canna-companies. But this format — depressingly — no longer works in a socially distant world. After the first few months of social distancing, Pechtes decided she was going virtual. With a few alterations to her business strategy, she has now successfully completed her second virtual cannabis dinner. In November, we attended her second Food Flower Future (FFF) dinner and had front-row seats from our own kitchen. Pechtes gave attendees a swag bag containing all the infused goodies to be incorporated throughout the dinner, as well as shopping lists so we could cook along. Chef Kimberly Kamish King, formerly of Los Angeles, live-streamed via Zoom all the way from Jamaica. Each of Kamish’s courses were printed on FFF cards listing their respective cannabis-infused items for pairing; our job at home was to prep ahead of time, then tune into Zoom to follow

mg CBD), and not one, but two more pre-rolls: Wookie Cookies from Arcanna Flowers and a Dad Grass joint (12.3 percent CBD). The pacing and arrangement of the ingredients made for a fullrange experience, building with THC and ending CBD-heavy. One aspect of FFF’s in-person events that translated seamlessly to the virtual format was the comingling of attendees with brand reps and owners. Attendees were able to meet the growers and makers via Zoom, ask questions and receive insider insight into the brands. Some of the sponsors in attendance included Tempo co-founder Robert Holland, representatives from CANN and Wyld, as well as Linsey Jones, the CEO of Aloha Humboldt. Aloha Humboldt, located in Willow Creek, is a small-batch, family-owned farm focusing on sustainable growing practices for their sun-kissed cannabis. While Aloha Humboldt is run by a husband and wife team, Jones, like many of the sponsors Pechtes partners with, is the CEO and brand visionary. There are elements of a face-to-face dinner that simply can’t be recreated through a virtual replacement. But the quirks resulting from a bunch of THC-loving adults all tackling instructions separately added a levity that made the night indelible. Some attendees were (reasonably and hilariously) distracted by Instagramming and HUMBOLDTCANNABISMAGAZINE.COM | WINTER 2020

dabbing, some supervised with a glass of wine or a joint in hand as their kitchen partner toiled at the stove, and more than a few of us had to get creative with our tamarind selections (what do you mean there’s a difference between frozen tamarind, tamarind paste, and tamarind candy?). Also, why do so few of us know what a ripe plantain looks like? When COVID-19 restrictions end, there is certainly a niche to fill for foodie entrepreneurs in Humboldt County. Cannabis food-pairings in the Emerald Triangle have been few and far between, with only a handful of publicized events occurring since legalization. For now, only those willing to venture to local dispensaries to create their own infused and paired menu can revel in a tasty haze similar to that of Food Flower Future’s attendees. For those within reach of Pechtes’ L.A. headquarters, virtual dinners continue to flourish until we’re allowed to dine with our fellow stoner brethren again. truck to the parking lot where we found her. Luna, as we named her, had leukemia, which in humans is a personal enemy, striking you and you alone. Not so with cats. Feline leukemia has become viral. And it is a beast. Unstoppable, it follows paw prints between the cornrows as it spreads from farm to farm, barn to barn, and from Luna to our other cat. While writing this article, my mind kept going back to my lost friends. VetCBD would have made their rough journey easier to bear. Mine, too. When Dr. Tim Shu looked at a crowded veterinary ER waiting room that probably included a Luna or two, not one patient stood out. They all stood out. Dr. Shu, like many of us, noticed pain management options for animals were sorely lacking. He combined his experience as a practicing veterinarian and a love of research to create cannabis tinctures to treat dogs and cats in pain. “It’s not so much that there was one particular patient, it’s more so the reality of animals’ lifespans. They live such short lives, always shorter than what we’d like, and I want their lives to be full of happiness and free of pain.” Dr. Shu uses the acronym PAINS to explain how VetCBD can help: pain, anxiety, inflammation, nausea and seizures. Our furry family members age along with us, sharing a lot of the same aches and pains, and, unfortunately, diseases. Dogs with hip dysplasia, cats stressing out, arthritis or cancer — they suffer as we do. As the number of people who successfully treat these same problems with cannabis increases, it is a logical progression that pets can benefit, too. Local dispensaries Humboldt Patient Resource Center (Eureka and Aracta, www.hrpchumboldt. com) and Satori Wellness (McKinleyville, www. satoriwellness.org) carry VetCBD, so I asked both about pet CBDs. Budtenders are some of the best people to consult when looking for advice and this time was no exception. Even though CBD is available in pet treats, they said it is easier to regulate dosage and adjust for pain with a tincture like VetCBD. I remember trying to coat many a pill

with butter for a little sick kitty who quickly turned into an angry cat armed with needle sharp claws. Putting a drop on her favorite food would have been a lot easier. One budtender was genuinely excited to speak about VetCBD, having seen a noticeable difference when it’s used to treat elderly dogs. than Vet CBD’s 20:1 formula (20 parts CBD to 1 part THC), Dr. Shu responded quickly. He created a 10:1 formula (10 parts CBD to 1 part THC). Budtenders also pointed out that even though the tincture is full-spectrum (meaning it includes THC and other cannabinoids), it is formulated to medicate without intoxicating your dog or cat. Still, if your pet has not been treated with CBD before, the budtenders advise starting at a lower dose than recommended. Patient education is the cornerstone of proper pet CBD use, and www.VetCBDHemp.com provides, answering fundamental questions such as: Should I give my dog CBD with food? (yes); Have there been any reported cases of allergic reactions? (no); And is it safe to give my cat CBD? (yes). But with a tincture, the best results do not come from only one strain and there is difficulty in standardizing those strains. One grower’s Ringo’s Gift may have small variatins from another’s, although they share genetics. Phytochemical makeup (the chemical compounds in any given plant) of cannabis includes cannabinoids CBD and TCH, plus some 400+ other compounds. These numbers may change as research comes to light. Dr. Shu looks for cannabigerol (CBG) the parent molecule for cannabinoids, and cannabichromene (CBC), thought to act as an anti-inflammatory and painkiller. Cannabis as a treatment for animals has been rediscovered through the efforts of animal lovers, including Dr. Shu. His research delves into history as well as science, like the use of cannabis in traditional Chinese medicine. “There are very few anecdotes for cannabis treatment for animals but the ancient Greeks used it. It was a fairly common ingredient in US large animal veterinary medicine in the 1800 and 1900s.” Hemp was widely grown to supply a hungry rope industry back then, and Thomas Jefferson used it to feed cattle noting

it was superior to tobacco, which provided no nourishment. Although use of CBD is legal in California, veterinarians are barred from prescribing or even discussing CBDs with pet owners. The bill SB-627 aims to change that by allowing veterinarians to prescribe but not dispense cannabis treatments. This passed bill is in committee and if all goes well, your vet should be able to discuss CBD treatment options with you sometime in 2021. Dr. Shu’s care for suffering animals extends well beyond his doorway.
