There’s a lot happening at the City right now, and we’re excited to share what’s coming up as we head into a big year of planning and community conversations.
Listening First: Helping Shape Fortuna’s Future
Instead of jumping straight into writing new plans, the City started by simply… listening. Last fall we embarked on a Listening Campaign. We talked with more than 60 people — longtime residents, newer families, teens, business owners, immigrant community members, City staff, and the full City Council — to hear what people love about Fortuna and what they hope to see in the years ahead.
Across all those conversations, people shared a lot of common ground. Folks want:
• A stronger local economy — including Mill Site development and a thriving Main Street.
• To protect the small-town feel that makes Fortuna special.
• More opportunities for teens and young adults so they have reasons to stay or come back.
• Clear communication from the City and a long-term sense of direction.
All of this input will guide how we update our General Plan and Strategic Plan this year — two major roadmaps for Fortuna’s future.
Join Us at Two Community Workshops
We are taking this information from the Listening Campaign, and we are inviting everyone — residents, businesses, families, and youth — to help build the next chapter for Fortuna.
Workshop 1: Imagining Future Fortuna
Wednesday, March 25, 2026
Doors open 4:00 p.m., workshop runs 5:30–8:00 p.m.
River Lodge
We’ll dig into the shared themes from the Listening Campaign and start shaping Fortuna’s vision and values.
Workshop 2: Charting a Course to Future Fortuna
Saturday, April 11, 2026
Doors open 10:00 a.m., workshop runs 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
River Lodge
This session will get more hands-on: economic development, youth opportunities, land use, infrastructure, and services.
And don’t worry — these aren’t typical government meetings. Expect food, a teen-friendly space, free childcare, and Spanish interpretation. We want everyone to feel welcome.
A lot of what we heard directly connects to business community priorities:
• Revitalizing Main Street
• Supporting a strong local workforce
• Predictable, clear communication and permitting
• Moving Mill Site development forward
These themes are already shaping the draft Strategic Plan, especially around economic development. Your input will help influence how the City invests and prioritizes in the years ahead — so your voice at the workshops is incredibly valuable.
And last but not least, budget season is here
• We’re also diving into the Fiscal Year 2026–27 budget, and here’s what’s coming up:
• Department budget requests due April 1
• Measure E meetings on April 8 and April 15 at City Hall at 5:30 pm
Public budget workshops on April 27 and May 4 at City Hall at 4:30 pm
• Fee Schedule adoption on May 18 at City Hall at 6 pm
• Final budget approval on June 1 at City Hall at 6 pm
This year’s budget will be shaped by what we’ve heard through the Listening Campaign — making sure the City’s resources line up with the community’s priorities.
Thank you,
Amy Nilsen

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR:
In April 2025, we opened our second location on Main Street in Fortuna, a space created intentionally for gathering and connection. This café-style shop gives us room to offer more of what our community has asked for: cozy indoor seating, breakfast sandwiches, seasonal menus, and a warm lobby to settle in with a drink or a pastry. This new location represents the next chapter of our growth — a chance to expand what we do while staying true to the heart of who we are. It’s a place where you can linger, meet a friend, study, celebrate, or simply slow down and enjoy something made with care.

New Business of the Year Nominee: Viltrakis Design Build Viltrakis Design Build started on paper in 2021 but really began in Joey Viltrakis’s childhood, remodeling homes with his parents as a toddler. He has since worked for some of the best custom home builders in Humboldt County and decided to start his own venture alongside his wife Michelle in delivering high-quality custom homes coupled with an equally high-quality construction experience for the homeowner. Michelle and Joey both went to Hydesville Elementary and Fortuna High School, and their personal connection to the Humboldt Community is apparent in their approach to walking homeowners through the experience of having their dream home built, while breaking the mold of the typical stressful contractor-build experience. They have looked far outside of Humboldt County to see what other custom home builders do and the experience that people can have when having their home built, and adopted and adapted those methods here in Humboldt County, creating a turn-key company that continues to deliver gorgeous coastal homes here all while giving the customer an experience that makes their project feel as personal and special to Viltrakis as it does to them.

Nene’s Goodies -Home-Based Business NomineeNene’s Goodies -Thank you for stopping by Nene’s Goodies! My name is Ahna and I am the owner/baker! Nene’s was started from my want/love of making clean, simple, rustic foods for my family. I started baking sourdough about 5 years ago. Breads, tortillas, noodles, you name it! I started selling a few loaves here and there to friends. My grandson (who calls me Nene) suggested if I start a business I should name it “Nene’s Goodies”! And so it was named! I officially started Nene’s last April and to my surprise within almost a year my little sourdough business has grown tremendously! From selling maybe 10 loaves in a week to 80 loaves (plus other goodies) at 1 event! Wow All thanks to the amazing support of my family (especially Mr. Nene), our friends (old and new since we started the business) and most importantly to our amazing customers! I am extremely honored by the Fortuna Chambers nomination of Home-based Business of the Year!!!! It’s always been my goal to have my customers feel as if they visited their favorite grandma, leaving them filled with love and goodies!!

Easy Squeezy Lemonade was squeezed into existence in July 2023 after Nathaniel and Colt qualified for the State High School Rodeo Finals in Bishop. While we were there, I became a regular at a lemonade stand that served the most amazing, ice-cold lemonade, and somewhere between cups I thought, “Humboldt needs this… and I can do it!” As soon as we got home, I contacted the Fortuna Junior Rodeo committee and asked to give it a shot. Armed with a pop-up from our garage, a health permit, and mountains of lemons, sugar, and water, we jumped in. The support that first year absolutely blew me away! We started popping up at every event we could find, and by year two we upgraded to a trailer to keep the lemon-
