Indigenous peoples in Canada continue to experience a disproportionate burden of tuberculosis (TB) compared to the general population. This is in part due to the high prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in some First Nations and Inuit communities, and the barriers that exist in effectively identifying and treating the infection to prevent it from flaring up later in life as active TB. This paper summarizes the literature on the prevalence and treatment of LTBI among Indigenous populations in Canada, highlighting the barriers that exist to effective treatment and identifying some strategies for overcoming these barriers.
