KEY DECISIONS TO MAKE Qualifying through the SQE requires more than just your academic ability; it demands planning, stamina, and a clear understanding of your commitments.
Before starting, make four key decisions: When will you realistically study? Are you studying immediately after graduating, returning after a break or balancing preparation alongside employment and/or other commitments? Be honest about your capacity. SQE preparation is demanding, and exam sittings are fixed, so you’ll need to plan backwards.
How many hours can you commit each week? This is the single biggest factor in guiding your course choice. Intensive full-time study demands sustained focus on a weekly basis and gives little room for leisure whilst longer courses give you time to consolidate knowledge, practise exam technique, and manage competing commitments.

Do you want standalone SQE preparation or a Master’s in Law? SQE preparation can be taken as individual courses or as part of an LLM in Legal Practice. The right choice depends on your academic background, funding options, confidence returning to study and your long-term goals.
Which provider will best support how you learn? When it comes to choosing a provider, cost matters, but so does the quality of the teaching. Understand the teaching style, supervision access, flexibility, feedback opportunities and exam readiness. With around 50% of candidates passing SQE1, structured preparation and the right support can make all the difference.
Do map out your time. Figuring out how much time you have prior to the exams is key. Work out how much time you have to devote to studying and be smart with it across the full number of weeks you have available to study. SQE STUDY PATHWAYS What suits me best? There is no single “correct” route to qualification. However, there are two common ways we see students prepare for the SQE: studying part-time alongside work, or studying full-time. In terms of what’s best for you, this will be informed by your circumstances, capacity and preferred style of learning.
If you aren’t sure whether you want to be a solicitor yet, start work in the legal sector first and immerse yourself in a firm or legal environment. LLM VS STAND-ALONE SQE PREP To help you decide, here are the key differences between an LLM and SQE prep courses:
Legal Content and Depth The SQE preparation training is exactly the same for both routes. The LLM adds two transactional modules and a capstone project, offering deeper engagement in legal practice, including Family Law, Personal Injury, Commercial Law and more.
Time and Structure You can take the SQE step by step, choose your study intensity, and pause between stages. For example, complete SQE1 in 13-weeks, and then study for SQE2 over 20-weeks while working. This route allows you to have complete focus on exam preparation alongside changing commitments. By contrast, the LLM study follows a fixed module structure and timing over one or two years, and learning continues regardless of which SQE exams you choose to take and when.

Revise key underlying law before your course starts This is especially important if you haven’t recently completed your UK law degree or conversion course. Revisiting areas like contract, tort, land law, and criminal law makes SQE prep easier to pick up. Confidence in these foundations allows you to focus on building on these from day one.
Plan ahead Map out how you’ll balance study with other commitments. Look at the course’s sample schedule and establish a realistic weekly timetable for core learning, revision, and practice. Understanding your commitments early on reduces stress and ensures a smoother start.
