Letter from the Executive Director
Dear Northbrook Park District residents,
Summer is around the corner, and I couldn’t be more excited, first and foremost because we will be welcoming you back to the newly renamed Northbrook Community Center!
The renovation of the former Leisure Center will be finished in time for summer, and we can’t wait to show off the building’s incredible transformation into a more functional and modern space that will accommodate highquality programming for all ages (For more details, take a look at page 9) .
Summer is the best time to venture outdoors and enjoy our 24 beautiful parks, including community parks, neighborhood parks, tot lots and passive parks
Research shows that spending time in nature can reduce stress, improve mood, decrease symptoms of anxiety and depression, increase the ability to focus, and even support heart health and immunity . Who can say no to all of that?
Among the highlights of summer is the opening of our pools, Meadowhill Aquatic Center (MAC) and Northbrook Sports Center Pool, which will be ready to welcome families on May 23 and June 6 respectively Make sure to purchase your pool passes by May 6 for early bird savings!
Summer is also the time to fill your calendar with our special events, where you can enjoy a variety of activities, hang out with family and friends, and meet other members of the community
The adults-only Grapes on the Green event, which has become a favorite for the Northbrook community, takes place June 20 in beautiful Village Green Park in downtown Northbrook (please note the date change)
Our Tuesdays in the Park concert series at Village Green Park kicks off June 23 for seven
weeks of great outdoor music and dancing, along with the chance to win prizes and visit with sponsors
As per tradition, our Fourth of July festivities, in partnership with the Village of Northbrook, include the 18th Liberty Loop and Lap in the morning, a community parade in the afternoon and spectacular fireworks in the evening .
The all-ages Party on the Green will be back at Village Green Park on August 15 with entertainment for the whole family — Taylor Swift covers, blues guitar tunes and an outdoor movie — along with games, bounce houses, arts and crafts, activities and giveaways for all Also, don’t forget to save the date for another adults-only favorite, Northbrook Brewfest on September 19 .
Summer is also when children and teens can engage in exciting activities, make new friends and create lifelong memories at Summer Camp Please turn to page 30 to find out more about our lineup of camps for ages 3 to 13 featuring swimming, field trips, sports, crafts, theater, dance, hockey, ice skating and golf
If you can’t decide which option is best, try several! We offer weeklong camps to give children and families the most flexibility and a chance to explore a variety of interests .
I wish you a fun-filled, joyful summer, and I look forward to seeing you at our parks, pools and special events!
Warmly,
Chris Leiner, Executive Director
IMPROVING COMMUNITY SPACES
West Park Project
The extensive renovation of West Park in Northbrook is scheduled to begin in mid to late May with completion in fall The 24-acre community park is located at 1730 Pfingsten Road, behind the Northbrook Sports Center
The project includes a new playground with increased accessibility, ramped play areas and synthetic turf safety surface; a new picnic shelter near the playground; replacement of three tennis courts; replacement of one sand volleyball court; new native planting areas along the trail; trail additions along the parking lot to create a two-thirds of a mile continuous loop within the park; a new multi-sport court featuring hockey and basketball; and new amenities such as benches, garbage/recycling cans and a drinking fountain with bottle filler and dog bowl
The plan includes the removal of some invasive and declining trees, and planting of 17,000 square feet of naturalized areas
The project is funded in part by a $600,000 Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources .
The project is based on careful evaluation of community priorities and feedback, including public input surveys conducted in 2024 and 2025
Techny Prairie Park and Fields
Starting in August, the Park District will resurface and replace nearly three-quarters of a mile of the multi-use trail at Techny Prairie Park and Fields . The project is estimated to last six to eight weeks, and is funded by a Bike Path Grant of $200,000 through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources
Additionally, the Park District was awarded a $600,000 grant through the state’s Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) program for renovations at Techny Prairie Park and Fields
The grant will allow the Park District to upgrade many of the 113-acre park amenities that were built in 2006 and are now reaching the end of their useful life
Project elements include a new playground with more accessible elements and synthetic turf safety surface; a new picnic shelter; improvements to the Trail Through Time including forest therapy elements, new seating areas and a new woodland path connection creating a new small loop; batting cage renovations including new equipment, an ADA accessible stall and a modernized payment system; renovations at Baseball Field #29 including field drainage improvements, dugout and bleacher shade structures, and new fencing, netting, scoreboard and site furnishings; a new tunnel for batting and pitching use with synthetic turf, portable mound, pitching screen and temporary pitching rubbers; and supplemental pond edge plantings, wildlife habitat improvements and educational signage .
The Park District sought public input for the project in summer 2025 by offering a community meeting led by project consultants, two community open houses, an online survey and an online petition
Heritage Oaks Golf Club
To increase customer comfort during hot summer days, the Park District added shade structures at the Practice Range, Academy tee and the bag drop area at Heritage Oaks Golf Club .
The main feature is the addition of five 20-footwide shade structures at the Practice Range with an aesthetically appealing style that complements the facility’s architecture
Additionally, a 100-foot-wide shade was installed on the east end of the range for the Academy tee, and an 20-foot-wide cantilever shade was installed for the bag drop podium area

Northbrook Community Center’s Exciting Transformation
The renovation of the Northbrook Community Center — one of the Northbrook Park District’s most exciting projects in recent years — is nearly done, with the reopening expected in time for summer
The building, formerly the Leisure Center, closed in August 2025 for the $12 .1 million renovation project partially funded by a $2 8 million state grant .
The 1960s era building will reopen to the community as a modern, bright and
welcoming environment with enhanced spaces to accommodate programming options for all ages
The Northbrook Community Center will host Sunshine Preschool, the Senior Center and Northbrook Theatre, along with a wide variety of classes and programs for children, adults and seniors
Witnessing the building’s transformation has been really exciting, said Northbrook Park District Director of Recreation Eileen Loftus Story continues on page 11 →
From Render to Reality
The building’s transformation is nearly complete — check out some of the construction progress! Note: renders presented by Wight & Company do not represent final design decisions.
EarlyClassroomChildhood
“From newly shaped rooms where users can play, learn, create and be together, to window replacements, paint and flooring — the changes are more and more evident with each visit,” Loftus said “It’s been wonderful to see the project begin with conversations about the needs of the community, be a part of the design selection process and now watch the project come alive ”
The renovated and repurposed building will provide more natural light through new exterior and interior windows, an upgraded entrance leading to the customer service front desk, and a warm lobby area with a fireplace .
There will be new areas for performance programs, including a new Studio Theatre, and new gathering areas, including comfortable seating, tables and chairs in the lobby and expanded hallways
A new demonstration kitchen will host cooking programs, and there will be revamped spaces for early childhood programs, art workshops and active programs for children and seniors
Soothing decorative elements include curvy hallway ceiling panels and calming blue and earth tones, as the design by Wight & Company incorporates biophilic principles (intended with the desire to create spaces that connect humans and the environment)
Northbrook Park District Superintendent of Arts and Recreation Erin Sweet, along with other staff knowledgeable about the building’s day-to-day programming, worked
on the project to ensure the needs of users of all ages were met .
A great element of the renovation is having a true front entrance to welcome community members, Sweet said “People will enjoy being able to walk from the parking lot through the new entrance into a welcoming lobby area,” she said “Our Northbrook Community Center staff members are looking forward to greeting individuals providing information and guidance as they get to know the new spaces in the facility The building and its amenities will have a friendly, open and communal feel, and we can’t wait to showcase it for the enjoyment of the entire community ”

NORTHBROOK PARK DISTRICT NEWSWORTHY NOTES
The Park District was awarded two prestigious “Best of the Best” awards from the Illinois Association of Park Districts late last year .
The Arts in the Park award recognizes support for the arts and partnerships with artists and organizations to enhance the quality of life in the community
From staples like the Tuesdays in the Park free summer concerts to the success of Northbrook Theatre, the Park District has a year-round calendar filled with arts-related offerings for all interests and age groups .
This includes summer camps for theater and visual arts; classes in ceramics, painting, drawing, sewing, culinary arts and more; private lessons in piano, voice and dance; introductory music classes for children; and dance, theatre and drama classes for all ages Many Park District community events incorporate the arts, such as Autumnfest in October and Grapes on the Green in June
Additionally, the Park District is committed to reducing barriers and making art opportunities accessible with a scholarship program that awards over $40,000 annually to individuals with financial need
The Best Green Practices award recognizes initiatives to incorporate and encourage environmentally friendly business practices and policies
Techny Prairie Activity Center remains dedicated to sustainability thanks to its 833 rooftop solar panels, even after the addition of two hours of running time to its HVAC systems for the comfort of patrons .
Last year, the Park District contributed to the community’s environmental education, including
with an exhibit during the Village of Northbrook’s first Climate Action Day (save the date this year on May 30!) and an “Oaktober” table at Autumnfest (save the date on October 3!)
About two acres of green space are converted into native areas every year, and prestigious Audubon certification is maintained for Heritage Oaks Golf Club, Techny Prairie Park and Fields and Wood Oaks Green Park
The Park District also utilizes environmentally friendly equipment including an electric fleet vehicle, electric robots for field striping, mowing and golf ball picking, and a hybrid reel mower
Golf Kudos
Park District golf facilities and staff members were recognized for industry leading operational achievements and awards at the annual PGA of America Show that took place earlier this year in Florida .

Lightning Warning Systems
The Northbrook Park District has two lightning warning systems One is located at Heritage Oaks Golf Club with ancillary units at West Park and Wood Oaks Green Park The other unit is located at Techny Prairie Park and Fields with ancillary units at the Chalet in Meadowhill Park and Village Green Park
Strike Guard monitors cloud and cloud-to-ground lightning The lightning warning system will activate when there is an immediate lightning threat in the area . When this occurs you must seek shelter immediately The unit will deactivate when the immediate threat has passed
Activation (an immediate lightning threat is present)
One uninterrupted (15-second) siren will sound and a strobe will flash
Deactivation (the system has determined conditions are safe)
Three 5-second blasts will sound and the strobe will go off .
Testing takes place on Tuesdays at 9:30am for the lightning systems. Be sure not to confuse testing with an actual alarm! Testing will not take place if there is threatening weather .
A new lightning warning system will be installed this summer For more information, visit nbparks.org/status .
