It has been a busy winter with a lot of fun activities. We are so happy that you ventured out to Village Green Center and Techny Prairie Activity Center for all our senior programming. Soon we’ll be celebrating the grand opening of the newly remodeled Leisure Center now known as Northbrook Community Center. We appreciate your patience as we wait to unveil the building.
We had a lovely time at the Holiday Party at Sunset Ridge Country Club and wish to give a special thanks to Barbara Rinella for graciously being the member host.
Looking forward to this summer, we are excited to be using our newly remodeled space at the Northbrook Community Center. Upon opening, I will be scheduling tours so that you can see all that has been accomplished.
We are always looking for new members, so please let you friends know about all our fun offerings at the Senior Center.
Bingo continues to be a big hit where we serve light refreshments and give out prizes for winners.
Thank you to those who attended our trip to Drury Lane Theater to see “Get on Your Feet,” a musical about Gloria Estefan. We enjoyed a nice lunch beforehand.
If you ever have any ideas or suggestions about offerings that you would like to see at the Senior Center, please do not hesitate to contact me!
As the weather gets warmer, our Wednesday Walking Club will venture outside to various parks in the community for an hour of walking and socializing. There is no cost if you are a member.
Have a lovely spring!
Sincerely,
Nancy Eschker

Senior Center News
Seniors inspired to join TPAC as members
Article by Elena Ferrarin, Communications Coordinator
When Senior Center member Mary Slattery found out the Leisure Center would close for construction and programming would move to Techny Prairie Activity Center, she was dismayed. “I thought, ‘Oh no!’” Mary said. “I had no idea where Techny Prairie Activity Center was. I might have heard the word ‘TPAC’ but I didn’t even know what it stood for. I wasn’t looking forward to the move.”
Now, however, Mary is a convert.
Not only was she able to seamlessly continue attending her favorite programs — tap dance and bingo — but she has come to love TPAC and all the facility offers, she said.
Mary is among Senior Center members who decided to sign up for a TPAC membership following the temporary closure of the Leisure Center (which will reopen to the public this summer as the Northbrook Community Center). She loves to walk on the elevated track and recently started using the machines on the fitness floor with the help of staff, she said.
“TPAC is really nice, and I really like the location, off the road and kind of quiet,” she said. “It’s peaceful. It’s not big and bustling, and I feel safe.”
Senior Center member Ora Beth Levine had a similar experience. She, too, didn’t have an initial positive reaction when she heard about the
Senior Center News, Cont.
temporary Senior Center move, but has since come to enjoy TPAC and signed up for a fitness membership.
“I was very unhappy because I live close (to the future Northbrook Community Center), and so many activities that I like, like bridge and yoga, were right around the corner,” she said.
“Now I take more yoga classes at TPAC with different instructors and I like the walking track. The people are very nice, and the facility is very nice. The only thing I wish is that there were restrooms on the second floor,” Ora Beth said. “But it surely turned out better than I thought!”
Northbrook Park District Superintendent of Athletics and Fitness Meri Shea said it’s been a pleasure to host Senior Center programs and meet so many seniors.
“We have worked hard to keep Senior Center members comfortable and happy, and it’s been a really positive experience to have them here,” she said. “It’s nice to see them in the lobby having
coffee or stopping by the front desk to talk to staff. It will be sad when they leave! We really hope they will continue to come to TPAC, whether it’s to enjoy our walking track and fitness offerings, or just to say ‘hi.’”
Senior Center member Joann Hoetzer said she’s glad that the Northbrook Park District was able to continue to offer Senior Center programming during construction, and credited the work of staff members Nancy Eschker and Sally Norlie.
“They really do a great job with the programs. They have everything so nice and festive all the time,” she said.
Joann said she has happily continued attending bingo and luncheon events, and now also enjoys her TPAC walking track membership.
Senior Center member Elaine Krinniger is a regular on Tuesdays, when she plays bunco and Farkle, and also enjoys bingo and luncheons.
While she hasn’t bought a TPAC membership (yet!), she’s encountered no issues while attending programs at the temporary location, she said.
“It’s going fine. There have been no problems at all,” Elaine said. “And I am glad that the Leisure Center is going to be remodeled into a beautiful new building. It needed it desperately!”

Northbrook Community Center’s exciting transformation
Article by Elena Ferrarin, Communications Coordinator
The renovation of the future Northbrook Community Center — one of the Northbrook Park District’s most exciting projects in recent years — is proceeding on track, with the reopening expected in time for summer.
The building, formerly the Leisure Center, closed in August 2025 for the $12.1 million renovation project partially funded by a $2.8 million state grant. The 1960s era building will reopen as a modern, bright and welcoming environment that will provide enhanced spaces accommodating programming options for all ages.
Witnessing the building’s transformation over the last few months has been really exciting, said Northbrook Park District Director of Recreation Eileen Loftus, who has regularly donned a hard hat to talk to construction crews and give tours to staff.
“From newly shaped rooms where users can play, learn, create and be together, to window replacements, paint and flooring — the changes are more and more evident with each visit,” Eileen
said. “It’s been wonderful to see the project begin with conversations about the needs of the community, be a part of the design selection process and now watch the project come alive.”
The remodeled building will provide more natural light through new exterior and interior windows, an enhanced entrance leading to the customer service front desk and a warm lobby area with a fireplace.
There will be new areas for performance programs, including a new Studio Theatre, and new gathering areas, including soft seating, tables and chairs in the lobby and expanded hallways. There will be revamped rooms for art programs and senior wellness, a beautiful new kitchen, and much more. Soothing decorative elements include curvy hallway ceiling panels and calming blue and earth tones, as the design by Wight & Co. incorporates biophilic principles (intended as a desire to create spaces that connect humans and the environment).
Northbrook Park District Superintendent of Arts and Recreation Erin Sweet and other staff members knowledgeable about the building’s dayto-day programming ensured that seniors’ needs were incorporated in the project, Northbrook Park District Park Planner Shea Anthony said.
“When selecting furniture, for example, we have made sure that chairs that are paired with tables are at a comfortable height to play long games of cards and are light enough to slide in and out without strain,” she said.
“There is so much institutional and observational knowledge being applied in the decisions being made, which means this building will truly serve its people.”
Overall, the project is a prime example of different disciplines and specialties coming together to make something special happen, Shea said. “It’s like one big symphony,” she said. “The project team is on site every week and it’s gratifying to observe the big and small changes that take place over the course of just a few days. It gives you an appreciation for each step of the construction process and how these steps build on each other.”
