Academics As a college preparatory high school, the curriculum of Nazareth Academy is geared to prepare all students for college. Courses are offered at college prep, honors and Advanced Placement levels. Freshmen typically begin with algebra, English, physics, religion, world history and world language with optional fine arts electives. Proficiency exams allow students who are accelerated in mathematics or language to begin at the sophomore level in those classes.
COLLEGE PREP All of Nazareth Academy’s courses in English, mathematics, science, social studies and world languages, as well as courses in fine and practical arts, are college preparatory. Students who satisfy Nazareth Academy’s graduation requirements are well prepared for success at the four-year college of their choice.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT The Advanced Placement Program enables students to pursue college-level studies while still in high school. AP grades are weighted. Based on their performance on the College Board AP Examinations, students can earn college credit and advanced placement in college courses. Students at Nazareth Academy successfully pass AP exams in each academic discipline. This past year, 96 students took 167 exams in 11 different areas.

HONORS Honors level courses are offered in English, mathematics, science, social studies and world languages. Qualified students may pursue honors courses in any or all disciplines. Freshman students who score sufficiently high on the HSPT entrance exam and whose 7th and 8th grade report cards indicate good study habits will be invited into honors courses. Honors grades are weighted.

Faith & Ministry CAMPUS MINISTRY Integrating Gospel values into the Nazareth Academy curriculum is an essential aspect of the Nazareth high school experience. Each student is provided with opportunities necessary to become a mature Christian person. In addition to the curriculum, liturgical and personal prayer, retreat participation and service opportunities all contribute to the continued development of one’s faith. The Campus Ministry Department empowers students in the areas of service, retreat and prayer. Throughout the school year students plan, conduct and generously support Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Lenten collections. Students may also have the opportunity to participate in summer service trips. Day retreats are offered at the freshman and sophomore level. Juniors are required to attend an overnight retreat at LaSalle Manor Christian Brothers Retreat Center in Plano, IL. Seniors may attend the nationally recognized Kairos Retreat. All-school liturgies provide celebrations of Holy Days of Obligation, as well as major school events throughout the year. Students plan and participate in all Masses and prayer experiences. During their junior year, students may also choose to be trained as Eucharistic Ministers.
All Nazareth students are encouraged to become involved in the Service Team, which is a student-run organization with an executive committee and co-chairs for each committee.

Athletics Nazareth is committed to athletic and academic excellence while integrating learning and competition with Christian values and faith. While we take great pride in the continued success of our student-athletes at the conference, regional and state levels, we always keep an eye on the bigger picture. Win and loss records mean nothing if our athletic programs are not helping to develop more respectful, kind, faith-filled and service-oriented student-athletes. This process is best accomplished within the Nazareth framework of Scholarship, Service, Spirit and Unity. Nazareth competes in the ESCC-East Suburban Catholic Conference and is a member of the Illinois High School Association. In support of IHSA policies, Nazareth Academy may not promise or offer athletic scholarships of any kind. Violations may result in loss of eligibility for the student, coach and/or school.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
A competitive entrance exam (HSPT) is administered to eighth grade students on Saturday, December 1, 2018. Nazareth accepts only those students capable of succeeding in its college preparatory curriculum, giving priority to those who test at Nazareth. With an enrollment of 770 students, a high level of student-teacher interaction is ensured.
Fees: $650 per student
Providing a Catholic, college prep education for young men and women requires financial sacrifice. We are aware of the growing cost of education and, for 117 years, Nazareth has been committed to providing scholarship opportunities and financial assistance to students. Financial awards at Nazareth come in forms of both scholarships and financial assistance. Nazareth Academy provides a “Named Scholarship Application” and “Financial Aid Form” on our website, www.nazarethacademy.com, under the Admissions tab. All scholarships and awards are based on student performance in fulfillment of the Nazareth Academy Mission and its four pillars of Scholarship, Service, Spirit and Unity. Nazareth is proud to honor the many alumni who choose to send their own children to Nazareth with a Legacy Scholarship. A $500 annual award will be granted to each student of a mother and/or father who graduated from Nazareth Academy. The award is renewable annually.

ACADEMIC AND LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIPS CSJ scholarships are awarded to the top test takers on the Nazareth Entrance Exam. Recipients are awarded a $5,000, $3,500 or $2,000 renewable scholarship toward tuition. New for 2019-2020 Students who score 97-99 will receive $5,000 Students who score 94-96 will receive $3,500 Students who score 91-93 will receive $2,000 Unity Scholarships are awarded to incoming freshmen who exhibit strong scholarship, service and leadership during their years of elementary education. Recipients are awarded a $1,000 renewable scholarship toward tuition. Unity applications are distributed on the day of the Nazareth Entrance Exam.
CAMPUS Nazareth Academy is set on over 20 acres of land. Academic buildings, a beautiful theatre and multiple athletic venues are some of the highlights. On campus parking is available to junior and senior students, as well as guests. 2016 saw the opening of Nazareth’s newest building, The Walsh Center, which includes new Fine Arts spaces, classrooms, a second gym and an expansive fitness center. The renovation of M Building for the 17-18 school year modernized 11 classrooms and allows for additional flex and meeting spaces.
DRESS CODE Nazareth Academy believes school uniforms celebrate our school identity and unity. Girls wear the uniform skirt with the uniform polo shirt. Boys wear solid black, navy or tan full-length dress pants with the uniform polo shirt. A uniform fleece pullover is optional. Solid black dress or athletic shoes and solid color socks are also worn. Neat grooming and conservative haircuts are an expectation.
PARENT PLEDGE PROGRAM As a Catholic, Christian community we believe by helping each other, we all grow and prosper. The Parent Pledge Program supports all who benefit from the Nazareth experience. Nazareth Academy encounters significant challenges as we set tuition each year while confronting rising operating costs. We encourage participation in the Parent Pledge Program to help pay the difference between tuition and what we actually spend to educate your child at Nazareth. This program provides a variety of ways for every family, regardless of financial circumstances, to help above and beyond tuition.
Technology At Nazareth, we understand that the role of technology in education means more than which devices we have; technology is a key component in the vitality of our classrooms and fulfillment of our mission. We strive to transform and enhance the way students learn and communicate by providing greater opportunity for collaboration, innovation and creativity. GOOGLE APPS FOR EDUCATION Each student receives a nazarethacademy.com Google account and has access to Gmail, Google Classroom, Google Drive and Google Calendar as well as all other free Google apps.
1:1 IPAD PROGRAM All students use iPads for most of their courses. Students provide their own iPad or iPad mini with a minimum of 128 GB storage. An iPad Pro with 64 GB or more of storage is also acceptable. A keyboard and stylus, while highly recommended, are optional. Students are responsible for iPad care and maintenance. The use of iPads provides enhanced opportunities for learning, while the savings in book costs more than make up for the purchase of the device over four years. Once a student registers a device, he or she receives access to Nazareth’s secure and protected WiFi network throughout the school.
TECHNOLOGY CENTERS Students have additional access to devices before, during and after school. The Computer Lab offers 60 Apple iMac computers. The Media Center has 60 Chromebooks, 30 iPads and 3 iMac workstations available for coursework, digital research and communication. Additionally, the Media Center offers a state-of-the-art audio visual setup, complete with projected AppleTV. The Computer Science classroom has 30 Daktech laptop computers for the instruction of computer programming. The Digital Media Arts Classroom has an additional 6 iMacs for in-class use.
TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM Classrooms contain a variety of technological resources including projectors, AppleTVs and Smartboards. Faculty members have the flexibility and resources to access tools and applications which best encourage collaboration, innovation and creativity. Examples include: Notability, Nearpod, Classkick, Catholic Bible app, Logo Creator, Floorplanner, Socrative, Pixlr, Desmos Graphing Calculator, Kaizena, mindmeister, Haiku-Deck and ReadRhythm.
REDIKER’S PLUSPORTALS FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS PlusPortals provides student and parent access to personalized information, including grade reports, in real time. PlusPortals is available to each student and parent through any web browser.
DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP Nazareth maintains a clear and consistent policy regarding the school’s expectations for Digital Citizenship and provides each student with a Responsible Use Policy.

You will “shadow” your host throughout his or her day of classes and get a feel for the academic and social aspects of Nazareth Academy. Experience why Nazareth is a great place to be.
Please come to the main office on the west side of the building between 7:30-7:45 a.m. Mr. Bonk will greet you and introduce you to your Nazareth host. School begins at 7:55 a.m. with shadow pick up at 3:00 p.m. Please arrange for pick up at the main office at the conclusion of the school day.
WHO CAN SHADOW AT NAZARETH? We encourage all 7th and 8th grade students to spend the day at Nazareth. 8th grade students may schedule a visit beginning in September and 7th grade students may schedule a visit beginning in January.

You need not bring anything with you for the day. Nazareth will provide you with a folder and pencil, as well as a lunch voucher valued at $6.50. You may want to bring an extra dollar or two just in case!
