THE LEGACY CONTINUES Each year at the Closing School Mass and at Graduation, we take a moment to honor those families who have chosen to continue their Nazareth legacy by sending their children to our beloved school. At Mass, the alum-parent and graduate were invited to step forward and to pass along the light from the alumni candle from one generation to the next as they received a blessing from the congregation. On May 20, Nazareth Academy held a Graduation Mass and Commencement at the Westin Lombard for the 162 graduates of the Class of 2018. Alongside faculty, staff, alumni, families and friends, the graduates gathered to celebrate, reflect, pray and most importantly, to go light this world. James Moster, Valedictorian, gave the Graduation Address. He spoke of the unique ways the Class of 2018 has created a legacy and challenged them to not let the fires of their passions die out, “The smoke of our burning passions permeated every room of the school these four years. Let people complain about smoke in their eyes or how brightly you shine, because they’re just blind to the beauty of grit...Keep your hope-filled eyes on the horizon, but don’t forget to scan the ground ahead of you.” Jim will attend the University of Notre Dame. In her Gratitude Reflection, Gabrielle Meyer also encouraged her classmates toward greatness. “Class of 2018 - this is our time. We owe it to everyone who got us to this point, and to ourselves, to make the most of it. Let us make our rise to the top the way we say ‘thank you’ to those people who helped us see our magnificent potential.” Gigi will attend Marquette University. The Salutatorian is Samuel Byczek, who will attend the University of Southern California. Sam is a recipient of a National Merit Letter of Commendation, a Congregation of St. Joseph Scholar, an Illinois State Scholar and a two-sport student-athlete. At the 2018 Awards Ceremony Sam was named the 2018 Outstanding Male Scholar-Athlete. The Sister Oliver Donlin Award, the highest service award that can be earned by a graduating senior and the only award given out on the day of Graduation, was awarded to Jamie Glas. Much to the point of this award, Jamie is a true servant leader. She has upheld Nazareth’s pillars and has accepted the challenge of striving to reach her potential by developing the whole person. She was also the recipient of the Religious Studies Award and Outstanding Service Award for 2017-18. Jamie will attend Loyola University in the fall.
