Academics
All U.S. History Honors students participate in History Fair projects. For the past two school years, 6 Nazareth students have advanced all the way to National History Day competition in Maryland.
NAZARETH STRIVES TO EDUCATE THE WHOLE PERSON As a college preparatory high school, the curriculum of Nazareth Academy is geared to prepare all students for college. Courses are offered at college prep, honors and advanced placement levels. Freshmen typically begin with algebra, English, foreign language, physics, religion and western civilization with optional fine arts electives. Proficiency exams allow students who are accelerated in mathematics or language to begin at the sophomore level in those classes.
COLLEGE PREP All of Nazareth Academy’s courses in English, foreign language, mathematics, science and social studies, as well as courses in fine and practical arts, are college preparatory. Students who satisfy Nazareth Academy’s graduation requirements are well prepared for success at the four-year college of their choice.
Did you know?
HONORS Honors level courses are offered in English, foreign language, mathematics, science and social studies. Qualified students may pursue honors courses in any or all disciplines. Freshman students who score sufficiently high on the HSPT entrance exam and whose 7th and 8th grade report cards indicate good study habits will be invited into honors courses. An additional quality point is given for courses taken at the honors level.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT The Advanced Placement Program enables students to pursue college-level studies while still in high school. An additional quality point is given for courses taken at the advanced placement level. Based on their performance on the College Board AP Examinations, students can earn college credit and advanced placement in college courses. Students at Nazareth Academy successfully pass AP exams in each academic discipline. This past year, 68 students took 108 exams in 12 different areas. 1

Faith & Ministry
CAMPUS MINISTRY Integrating learning with Christian values and faith, Nazareth provides each student with opportunities necessary to become a mature Christian person. In addition to the curriculum, liturgical and personal prayer, retreat participation and service opportunities all contribute to the continued development of one’s faith. The Campus Ministry Department empowers students in the areas of service, retreats and prayer. Throughout the school year students generously support Thanksgiving, Christmas and Lenten collections. Students also have the opportunity to participate in several different

summer service trips. Day retreats are offered at the freshman and sophomore level. Juniors are required to attend an overnight retreat at LaSalle Manor Christian Brothers Retreat Center in Plano, IL. Seniors may attend the Kairos Retreat, the premier nationally recognized retreat program founded in the Jesuit tradition. Eight all-school liturgies provide celebrations of Holy Days of Obligation as well as major school events throughout the year. Students plan and participate in all prayer experiences. Students may also choose to be trained as Eucharistic Ministers.
INTEGRATING LEARNING WITH CHRISTIAN VALUES Did you know? In September 2013, Nazareth mandated a record number of student Eucharistic Ministers. 50 students volunteered their time over summer months and before and after school for training and prayer.

ATHLETICS Nazareth is committed to athletic and academic excellence while integrating learning and competing with Christian values and faith. Participation in interscholastic athletics can make a material difference to the development of young adults. Athletics is a process that can be used to cultivate leadership skills and an attitude of achievement that can be beneficial for a lifetime. This process is best accomplished within the Nazareth framework of Scholarship, Service, Spirit and Unity. Nazareth supports the policies of the Illinois High School Association. In doing so, Nazareth Academy may not promise or offer athletic scholarships of any kind. Violations may result in loss of eligibility for the student, coach and/or school.

The popular Nazareth Academy Fine Arts program, filled with opportunities for the creative mind to grow and excel, offers academic courses in art, band, choir, drama and speech. Students enhance these classroom experiences by participating in multiple bands, choirs, color guard, the fall play and the spring musical. Come add your creativity and talent to Nazareth!
Students are highly encouraged to choose from a wide range of clubs and activities to complement varied interests. Organizations meet on a specific day of the week during the Activity Period (3:00-3:30 p.m.). Athletic practices do not begin until 3:30, allowing those interested in participating in both athletics and extra-curriculars to do so successfully.

A competitive entrance exam (HSPT) is administered to eighth grade students on Saturday, January 10, 2015. Nazareth accepts only those students capable of succeeding in its college preparatory curriculum, giving priority to those who test at Nazareth. With an enrollment of 750 students, a high level of studentteacher interaction is ensured.

Beginning with the 2015-2016 school year, Nazareth is proud to honor the many alumni who choose to send their own children to Nazareth with a Legacy Scholarship. A $500 annual award will be granted to each student of a mother and/or father who graduated from Nazareth Academy. The award is renewable annually.
Nazareth Academy believes school uniforms celebrate our school identity and unity. Girls wear the uniform skirt or pants with the uniform polo shirt. Boys wear solid black, navy or tan full-length dress pants with the uniform polo shirt. A uniform sweatshirt or fleece pullover is optional. Solid black dress shoes and solid color socks are also worn.
ACADEMIC & LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIPS Over 40 CSJ and Unity Scholarships were awarded to the Class of 2018. CSJ scholarships are awarded to the top test takers on the Nazareth Entrance Exam. Recipients are awarded a $3,000 or $5,000 renewable scholarship toward tuition. Unity Scholarships are awarded to those incoming freshmen who exhibit strong scholarship, service and leadership during their years of elementary education. Recipients are awarded a $1,000 renewable scholarship toward tuition. Unity applications are distributed the day of the Nazareth Entrance Exam.
CAMPUS Nazareth Academy is set on over 20 acres of land. Academic buildings, a beautiful auditorium and multiple athletic venues are some of the highlights. Ample and secure parking is available to junior and senior students, as well as guests.
PARENT PLEDGE PROGRAM As a Catholic, Christian community we believe by helping each other, we all grow and prosper. The Parent Pledge Program supports all who benefit from the Nazareth experience. Nazareth Academy encounters significant challenges as we set tuition each year while confronting rising operating costs. We strongly encourage your participation in the Parent Pledge Program to help pay the difference between tuition and what we actually spend to educate your child at Nazareth. This program provides a variety of ways for every family, regardless of their financial circumstances, to help above and beyond tuition. The results are amazing!

Technology IPAD LAB (ILAB) Nazareth Academy has created an interactive iPad lab available for use as a classroom. The lab consists of 30 3rd generation Apple iPads.
FACULTY TECHNOLOGY Nazareth Academy provides each faculty member with a Lenovo i5 tablet and a 3rd generation Apple iPad.
EDLINE Nazareth Academy uses Edline as the portal to allow students and parents to access personalized information created just for them. The Edline service is available to each student and parent through any web browser, anywhere.
COMPUTER LAB, LIBRARY AND COMPUTER SCIENCE The Computer Lab has 60 Apple iMac computers available to all students. The Library has 20 wireless Lenovo i5 tablets and 3 iMac computers available for student use. A student ID is required to checkout a laptop. Three workstations are available to facilitate research. Online periodical databases and other Internet resources are available. The Computer Science classroom has 25 Daktech laptop computers for the instruction of computer programming. MS Office 2013 Professional Plus is installed on each device to allow students to efficiently complete homework assignments and gain experience using word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation applications. Kaspersky Labs virus scanners are used throughout the LAN to prevent any potential virus outbreaks and to block Spyware and Adware. Barracuda Web Filters are used to block inappropriate web content, viruses and spyware.

Edline is a time saver, allowing students and parents to receive grade reports, lost or missing homework assignments, billing invoices, calendar events and the latest Nazareth news. The Interactive Classroom feature set adds exciting new tools and features for faculty and students. New features include: online discussions, interactive assignments, electronic homework hand-in, and flexible online tests and quizzes.
BYOD (BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE) All incoming freshmen will be required to purchase an iPad for daily use throughout their four years of high school. The vast majority of classroom textbooks will be offered electronically. Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors may bring their own electronic devices to school, allowing them to access classroom-related material throughout the school day. Participation in BYOD for 2014-2015 for these grade levels is optional. In addition, a limited number of courses offer electronic textbook options.
GOOGLE APPS FOR EDUCATION Nazareth Academy uses Google Apps for Education. Each student receives a Google account and has access to Gmail, Google Drive and Google Calendar, as well as all other free Google apps.

You will “shadow” your host throughout his or her day of classes and get a feel for the academic and social aspects of Nazareth Academy. Experience why Nazareth is a great place to be.
Dress pants (or skirts for the girls), a collared shirt or sweater and dress shoes. Please do not wear jeans or gym shoes.
WHO CAN SHADOW AT NAZARETH? We encourage all 7th and 8th grade students to spend the day at Nazareth. 8th grade students may schedule a visit beginning in September and 7th grade students may schedule a visit beginning in mid-January.
HOW DO I SCHEDULE A SHADOW DAY? Schedule a shadow day any day of the week school is in session. Please call Mr. John Bonk at 708.387.8538 a minimum of two full days in advance to schedule your visit. Call soon as certain dates fill up fast.
WHOM WILL I SHADOW DURING MY VISIT TO NAZARETH? Our goal is to help you have the best day possible. Your host for the day will be either a freshman or sophomore who has interests and academic goals similar to yours. Know a current Nazareth student you would like to shadow? We will make every effort to accommodate your request.
WHERE AND WHEN SHOULD I ARRIVE? Please come to the main office on the west side of the building between 7:30-7:45 a.m. Mr. Bonk will greet you and introduce you to your Nazareth host. School begins at 7:55 a.m. with shadow pick up at 3:00 p.m. Please arrange for pick up at the main office at the conclusion of the school day.
