PRINCIPAL’S WELCOME Welcome to Nazareth College - a school that lives out the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth on a daily basis. We are delighted that you are joining our community and hope that this booklet provides some further information to assist you in settling into your new school. Staff and students at Nazareth are friendly and keen to help you at any time. SCHOOL DAY STRUCTURE Becoming familiar with the school day at Nazareth is something that will happen quickly! Monday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday Timetable •

Each day has five periods.

Each five periods runs for 60 minutes

Students have a 10 minute Pastoral Group every morning on these days

Tuesday Timetable On Tuesday (Day 2 & 7), we have four periods instead of five and we have Extended Pastoral after Period 2. There is only one break on Tuesday - after Extended Pastoral We finish school early. Instead of finishing at 3.03pm, students finish at 2.20pm. This allows time for teachers to have faculty meetings and professional development.

However, when someones physical or psychological safety is at risk, it is important to seek help from a trusted adult. 4. COUNSELLING

At Nazareth College we place an emphasis on whole person development and individual excellence. Nurturing the emotional wellbeing of our students remains a key focus at Nazareth College. In order to address this, Nazareth provides a counselling service for students. This complements the College’s commitment to the pastoral and welfare needs of our school community. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PARENTS Nazareth College acknowledges that the education and formation of young people is a shared responsibility with parents/guardians and the school working in harmony. It is important that as part of the Nazareth College Community parents/guardians are fully supportive of all curricular and co-curricular activities and that students see a consistent approach to their education from both parents/guardians and the school. Important ways parents/ guardians can be involved in their sons’ and daughters’ education include: • Discussing your child’s progress with him/her on a daily basis • Encouraging your child to complete all set homework • Encouraging participation in extra-curricular activities • Attending Student Progress Meetings and Information Evenings • Supporting all aspects of the school program including Camps, Reflection Days, Sports Days and House activities • Encouraging students to wear their uniform correctly and with pride • Encouraging respect for all members of the Nazareth Community • Using this Student Organiser for communicating with staff (eg. notes to teachers) • Absences - understanding the expectations and how to notify of absences. • Making practical contributions to the school community • Supporting the College ethos and all behavioural expectations.

CONTACT WITH MEMBERS OF STAFF 1. Parents are always welcome to meet with members of staff. However, it is necessary to make an appointment to meet in person with a staff member. 2. Parents’ first point of contact should normally be with your child’s Pastoral Teacher. If the Pastoral Teacher is unavailable parents should then contact the relevant Head of House. 3. You can log in to PAM (Parent Access Module) to communicate to teachers and Heads of House. 4. PASTORAL CARE Nazareth College has a well-established Pastoral Care Program that aims to support the Wellbeing needs of our student community. Our Pastoral policy is linked directly to that of the Melbourne Archdiocese of Catholic Schools (MACS) which provides the guiding framework for for Nazareth College. COLLEGE NEWSLETTER The College Newsletter is published every fortnight during school terms. The Newsletter is emailed to all families and is also available through PAM. DIGITAL INFORMATION SIMON EVERYWHERE - FOR PAM Nazareth College uses PAM (Parent Access Module) which is also available as a mobile app called Simon Everywhere. PAM allows parents/guardians to access our school intranet on PCs, laptops, tablets or smartphones to view important information about their children. This platform is our main form of communication. Nazareth College uses CDFpay, a cashfree solution for our school community. CDFpay is and online payment platform offered the the Catholic Development Fund (CDF). Nazareth College encourages all parents to use this simple, cash-free platform such as Online Cafe Naz orders and Student Card top up for canteen purchases. PAM - PARENT ACCESS MODULE SiMON is the Nazareth College Learning Management System used continuously throughout the day by students and staff. Parent access to SiMON is via PAM – the Parent Access Module. In PAM you can: • View Daily Messages • View your child’s Personal Details • View your child’s Timetable • View your child’s attendance • View your child’s reports, including our Continuous Reporting to gain ‘Real-time’ feedback - Book Student Progress Interviews • View the College Calendar • Update your child’s Medical Information To login to PAM go to pam.nazareth.vic.edu.au or access it via the Portals tab on the College website at nazareth.vic.edu.au. BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE (BYOD) INFORMATION The ICT Department is here to support the ICT needs of both Students and Parents. At Nazareth College we run what is referred to as a BYOD, Bring Your Own Device, Laptop Program. This means that your child is required to bring a Laptop that meets the minimum specifications, as detailed in the below chart.

BOOKLIST INFORMATION All year level Booklists are available on the Nazareth College website under Learning > Learning Materials. All Booklist Orders are to be completed online at: campion.com.au The College has appointed Campion Education (Aust) Pty Ltd as the official supplier of eTexts, books and stationery. Campion are able to provide all items required by students and are the sole suppliers of the eText bundles. Parents, however, are free to purchase stationery and (physical) textbooks from other suppliers. Collection dates for textbooks (physical) and stationery for the next school year are distributed to students in November of the preceding year. TRANSPORTATION College and Public Buses

General Information Bookings Nazareth College offers subsidised buses to assist families in transporting their child(ren) to and from school. Families wishing to use the College bus service should complete and submit the Nazareth College School Bus Application Form. The service is available to students of Nazareth College who wish to use the bus on a full time basis throughout the school year. We are unable to provide a service for casual users.

NAZARETH COLLEGE EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS USING THE BUS SERVICE When travelling on the Nazareth College Bus students must always carry their bus pass. This must be presented to the driver upon boarding. As always, Nazareth students are expected to be courteous and polite to the bus driver and fellow students at all times. Students should remember that when travelling on a Nazareth College Bus they are ambassadors for our community and as such should always represent the College in a positive manner. Students catching a Nazareth College Bus are ambassadors for our community and are expected to wear their uniform correctly and with pride at all times.

Besides the Private Nazareth buses, there are plenty of Public Bus Routes near Nazareth College. There are at least 10 public bus routes which service Nazareth College. These include:

The College subsidises the cost of the buses.

BUS PASS Students will use their school student ID card. The student ID card must be shown when boarding the bus to and from school.

Nazareth College is continually addressing the changing needs of our families. If you do not see a route which suits you, please contact the College to express interest in an alternative route.

MEDICAL INFORMATION Our fully equipped First Aid post located next to Student Services is staffed by an experienced occupational First Aider. Students who are unwell or injured receive prompt attention and, where necessary, parents are contacted. Students with diabetes, asthma, anaphylaxis or other medical conditions are fully catered for with individual action plans and assistance to take their required medications, etc.

COLLECTION OF UNWELL CHILD

Please complete the Confidential Medical Form and return any Action Plans for Anaphylaxis, Asthma, Epilepsy/Seizures or Diabetes. All of which need to be signed by a GP or treating health professional, and signed within the last year. (Plans are valid for 12 months)

Students are not to contact parents directly regarding their health status. Students must present to the Health Centre for assessment from the the school nurse or First Aider.

It is a requirement that all college students have a fully completed Confidential Medical Form before commencing at the College.

MEDICATION AUTHORITY If a student requires over the counter medication e.g. Panadol, ibuprofen or antihistamines on a regular basis for example period pain, you are required to fill in a Medication Authority Form and have your GP or health care provider sign it. All medication brought into the college must be in original packaging, with pharmacy label with student’s name and dosage attached. Medications may only be administered to students in accordance with a written Medication Authority Form together with a fully completed, signed and dated Medical Management Plan. These forms are available on our website. These requirements are regulated by MACS* and the State Government. If parents personal details change, or there are changes to the student’s medical condition please update us at your earliest. Email studentservices@nazareth.vic..edu.au

AMBULANCE COVER Most people make the assumption that when they have private health insurance all ambulance transfers emergency and non-emergency are covered by the health insurance - this is quite often not the case most policies state EMERGENCY transport only. Government card holders such as Health care card providers, may also not be covered for nonemergency ambulance transport. We strongly advise to take out Ambulance Victoria cover.

The First Aider will contact the parent if the student needs to leave the College. Parents are required to collect their child from Student Services.

IMMUNISATION The Secondary School Immunisation Program offers free vaccines to help make sure students and communities are protected from diseases such as dipheria, tetanus, whooping cough, human pappilomavirus (HPV) and meningococcal ACWY. The City of Greater Dandenong delivers this immunisation program to all Secondary Schools within their area. The college will distribute the information to all Year 7 students, both male and female, at the start of Year 7. Please note, this is NOT mandatory to be completed at the college. The Public Health and Wellbeing Regulations 2019 authorises secondary schools to provide their local council with student and parent/guardian contact information for any student scheduled to receive a vaccination. Everyday vaccination saves lives and makes it possible for Victorians to live free from the illness and disability caused by so many infectious diseases. All Year 7 and Year 10 Victorian secondary students can receive these vaccines for free. There is one round of injections for the Year 7 students. The immunisations will be held at the College. ACCELERATION PROGRAM

Recent research has identified accelerated learning as the single most important contribution schools make to enhance the education of high-achieving students. The Acceleration Program provides students with pathways for acceleration in individual subjects throughout Years 7 – 12.

MUSIC PROGRAM AND PRODUCTIONS Nazareth College has a broad range of opportunities in the Performing Arts for students to experience the exhilaration associated with rehearsing and preparing performances in dance, drama or music.

Nazareth College offers students wishing to study Dance the opportunity to rehearse and practice the whole year in the weekly Dance class that studies Hip Hop and other contemporary styles.

Students who work in these disciplines develop greater self-confidence and stronger communication skills, and through working in close knit groups, acquire invaluable experience in high level ensemble situations.

Students with an interest in Drama are able to pursue acting opportunities through the involvement in the Production which takes place every second year. The College has its own 800 seat auditorium for all performances including opportunities for students to study lighting and sound behind the scenes on professional equipment.

The Music Department has approximately 100 instrumental students and a wide array of ensembles including the Guitar Ensemble, Drumline, Junior and Senior (Contemporary) Naz Bands, Junior and Senior Concert Band, Vocal Ensemble and a mix of different chamber groups. Students are introduced to the Instrumental Music Department in Year 7 and are able to take lessons on most instruments, rehearse in one of the ensembles and perform in various concerts throughout the year.

Nazareth encourages all its students to take an interest in the activities of the Performing Arts, whether that be in a performing or support role, or just as an audience member. The Performing Arts program endeavours to develop each student’s interpersonal, communication and cognitive skills with the aim of creating positive and productive adults. SPORT AT NAZARETH Nazareth College is part of the Southern Independent Schools (SIS) Association. For five to six weeks each term we participate in Inter School Sport against the twelve other schools who are also part of the SIS Competition. The Inter School competition occurs on a Thursday for Junior and Senior Competitors and on a Friday afternoon for Intermediate competitors. All competitions takes place during school time. Each term, there are a variety of different sports available. We also have three House Carnivals each year: Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics. All students have the opportunity to participate in each carnival each year. From our House Carnivals we choose our Inter School Squads. The SIS Carnivals are held throughout the year - Swimming and Cross Country in Term Two and Athletics in Term Three. The SIS Swimming Carnival is held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre; SIS Cross Country at Baxter Park; and SIS Athletics at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park.

The Cafe is open for Morning Tea and Lunch and provides a wide variety of approved food choices. Lunch orders and special requests are welcome for those with special dietary requirements. EFTPOS facilities are available as a convenient method of payment ($5.00 minimum purchase) The Cafe is large, comfortable, and an enjoyable place to have your lunch, snack or a cold or warm drink. The College uses CDFpay, which is a cash-free online payment platform offered to help pay for school extras such as lunch meals.
