ON THE COVER: Be Happy by Peggy Rubin After a long career in educational publishing followed by several years as an antiques dealer, Peggy Rubin moved to Tucson and finally made space to pursue her dream of becoming a visual artist.

Rubin has always been drawn to the visual Peggy Rubin arts, but it wasn’t until retirement that she picked up a paintbrush and began exploring painting for herself. What started as a new adventure quickly became a passion.
17 Restoring Wholeness
Inspired by the world around her and by artists who have challenged the rules before her, Rubin approaches each canvas with curiosity and a sense of play. A painting may begin with a simple idea or a single color, but she welcomes the moment when the work takes on a life of its own, guided by unexpected marks and movement. Handmade papers, fabric and found objects often add an element of surprise. Being part of Tucson’s SAAG Gallery has added another rewarding dimension to Rubin’s artistic journey. Meeting people who stop to look at her work— and hearing their reactions—reminds her that a painting can mean something different to every viewer. She especially enjoys conversations that begin with, “What do you see?”

Sometimes balance asks us to make a change. Sometimes it asks us to let something go. And sometimes, perhaps most importantly, it asks us to find forgiveness where we never thought forgiveness would be possible—including forgiveness for ourselves. Our main feature, Introduction to Somatic Therapies, explores one pathway toward greater awareness by bringing attention back to the body and its connection to our emotional and mental well-being. Inner balance can be both technical and deeply personal. It can involve our nervous system, physical health and daily habits, while also touching something more intangible: our sense of purpose, peace, connection and center. Whatever balance means to you, I hope this issue encourages you to pause, listen inward and discover what helps you feel more whole. In wellness,
Natural Awakenings is printed on partially recycled and fully recyclable newsprint with black soy ink.
Tucson Edition
For me, inner balance has a lot to do with finding the right pace for life. I was reminded of this during recent travels. There is something wonderfully freeing about long days of exploration, when the usual schedules and routines fall away and there is time to simply notice what is around you. I found beauty in nature, in changing landscapes and in those quiet moments when I could stop, breathe and take it all in. Even in the fullness of travel, I discovered a different kind of balance—the balance between exploring and Holly Baker resting, moving forward and being present.
Perhaps that is what inner balance looks like in everyday life, too. It may be found in a yoga or Pilates practice, a few minutes of meditation, nourishing our bodies with good food, getting enough sleep or making a choice that supports the person we want to become. It can mean listening to our bodies, creating healthier boundaries, reconnecting with family or friends, or simply giving ourselves permission to slow down.

As I thought about this month’s theme, Inner Balance, I kept coming back to one simple idea: Balance is not a destination. It is something we continually create, adjust and rediscover as our lives change.

Discover the Benefits of Tai Chi OLLI-UA members can also attend a free six-week course beginning Wednesday, September 16, at 9 a.m. on the University of Arizona campus. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Arizona (OLLI-UA) is a member-led, volunteer-run learning community for adults 50 and up. Membership provides access to hundreds of classes, social activities and other opportunities for learning and connection, with no tests or grades. Tai Chi offers more than physical movement. The practice incorporates elements of Chinese culture, philosophy and language while emphasizing balance, harmony and awareness. Rather than relying on muscular force, practitioners use Yi (intent) to guide Qi (internal energy). Regular practice can support balance and help cultivate greater harmony in body and mind. Those interested in exploring Tai Chi can experience this ancient practice through two upcoming opportunities offered by YMAA Tucson Tai Chi Ch’uan. A free introductory Tai Chi talk and demonstration will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 29, at YMAA Tucson Tai Chi Ch’uan, 4648 E. Speedway Blvd in Tucson. What does it really mean to feel balanced? Balance is not about having every area of life perfectly aligned. It begins with understanding ourselves deeply enough to recognize when we have become disconnected from our own needs, values, emotions and inner truth. Evolutionary Astrology can offer a meaningful framework for that self-understanding. Your birth chart reflects patterns, tendencies, emotional needs and areas of growth that can help bring greater awareness to the ways you move through life. By exploring these themes, you may begin to recognize where you are operating from old patterns and where you are being invited into greater conscious choice. At Celestial Bridge, Jayme Raymond approaches Evolutionary Astrology as a grounded tool for reflection and self-discovery. A reading creates intentional space to slow down, reconnect and see yourself from a new perspective, bridging astrological insight with practical, compassionate guidance. The goal is not to tell you who to be or predict your future. It is to help you better understand yourself, reconnect with your inner guidance and consciously navigate your unique path forward. Sometimes, finding balance begins with simply coming back to yourself. Book a Soul Birth Chart Reading with Celestial Bridge to begin exploring your chart as a map for deeper self-awareness, clarity and conscious growth. Bile Acids: An Unknown Contributor to Our Overall Health C Malambo/peopleimages.com on AdobeStock.com
The Art of Coming Back to Yourself
By gaga on AdobeStock.com
Health Briefs Our amazing body can produce up to one liter of bile per day. Many people know about bile’s function in emulsifying dietary fats but are unaware of its other functions. Problems with bile acids can also be a rarer cause of chronic digestive problems such as constipation, diarrhea, loose stools, abdominal pain, gas and bloating.
Bile is made in the liver and stored in the gallbladder. Upon eating a meal containing fats, the gallbladder releases bile into the small intestine. After assisting with fat absorption, about 95 percent of primary bile acids are reabsorbed in the last part of the small intestine and sent back to the liver to be reused. The remaining five percent of primary bile acids head into the colon, where they are changed into secondary bile acids by colonic bacteria. Secondary bile acids have diverse effects on the body, including reducing harmful bacteria in the colon; improving insulin resistance and blood sugar control; enhancing muscle function; helping convert inactive thyroid hormone (T4) into active thyroid hormone (T3) in cells; reducing systemic inflammation in the body; and protecting neuronal health in the brain. With that said, elevated levels of some secondary bile acids have been found to increase the risk of colon and liver cancer. The good news is that functional medical practitioners can test primary and secondary bile acid levels. Again, this is always a consideration if a patient has had chronic digestive problems that have not responded to more common treatments. With more advanced testing, treatment plans can be tailored for precision. Dr. Amy Harding will discuss gastrointestinal issues and what you can do to feel better on Thursday, Sept. 17, from 6 to 7 p.m. Transformational Medicine is located at 2028 E. Prince Rd. in Tucson. The Zero-Waste Kit Practical Tools for Everyday Living by Kevin Greene

A
zero-waste kit isn’t about perfection— it’s about preparation. This small, portable set of reusable items helps cut down on single-use plastics, disposable packaging and other unnecessary daily waste. Whether heading to work, grocery shopping or meeting friends for lunch, keeping a few reusable essentials on hand makes sustainable choices easier and more consistent.
of short-lived items designed to be used only once.
Why Build a Zero-Waste Kit?
Because manufacturing these products requires energy, water and often fossil fuel inputs, choosing reusables helps conserve natural resources and lower greenhouse gas emissions associated with extraction, production, transportation and disposal. In a desert city already facing intensifying climate impacts, reducing single-use products is one practical way Tucsonans can address the problem at its source.
Waste often results from convenience. Many disposable products—water bottles, coffee cups, utensils, grocery bags and takeout containers—are used simply because they are readily available. A zero-waste kit makes reusable options just as accessible.

The benefits are practical. A refillable water bottle replaces disposable plastic bottles, reusable shopping bags eliminate the need for paper or plastic bags, and food containers make it easy to bring home leftovers without disposable packaging. These habits can also save money by reducing purchases
NaturalTucson.com
The environmental benefits are larger. Having reusable essentials handy reduces landfill waste and supports a circular economy focused on reuse rather than constant replacement. They also reduce demand for new disposable products made from virgin raw materials.
Core Items to Include
A well-rounded zero-waste kit covers eating, drinking, shopping and everyday errands. Consider including:
Refillable water bottle: A stainless steel or glass bottle wrapped in a silicone sleeve keeps drinks ready and replaces disposable plastic bottles. Travel mug or tumbler: Useful for coffee, tea or other drinks; some cafés offer discounts for bringing your own.
Botox $10 per unit
Reusable food container: A leakproof glass or stainless-steel container works well for leftovers, lunches, snacks or takeout. Reusable utensil set: Bamboo or stainless-steel cutlery helps you skip plastic utensils. Cloth napkin: Washable and useful for meals, spills or wrapping snacks. Foldable shopping bag: A compact tote avoids disposable bag use and fits in a purse, backpack or pocket. Produce bags: Lightweight mesh or cloth bags are perfect for loose fruits and vegetables. Small jars or reusable pouches: Handy for bulk foods, snacks or leftovers. Reusable straw: Useful for those who regularly use straws.
Customizing a Kit
The best zero-waste kit is one that will actually get used, so it should be built around a daily routine. Prioritize containers, utensils and napkins for meals away from home. Keep a travel mug in the car or backpack for beverages. Farmers market shoppers may want extra produce bags, while travelers might carry refillable toiletry bottles, snack pouches or compact utensils. Keep maintenance simple: wash items on arriving home, restock regularly, store the kit in one dependable place and replace anything too bulky with a lighter option. An easy-to-carry kit is more likely to become routine.
Building It Sustainably
There’s no need to buy everything at once. The most sustainable approach is to start with reusable items already owned—jars, containers, cloth napkins and shopping bags can all be repurposed rather than purchasing new products. When buying new items, prioritize quality over quantity. Durable materials such as stainless steel, glass, bamboo and sturdy fabric can last for years with proper care, making them better environmental and financial investments. Build gradually. Start with one or two essentials—perhaps a water bottle and shopping bag—then add items as opportunities arise to replace disposables. This keeps costs manageable and lets habits develop naturally. In a fast-paced world built around convenience and disposability, keeping a few reliable reusables nearby can feel grounding. The goal isn’t to achieve zero-waste perfection, but to be prepared to make more intentional choices. Over time, each reusable item can replace countless disposable ones, making waste reduction simpler, supporting more mindful consumption and turning small, repeated actions into lasting habits that benefit both people and the planet. Kevin Greene is a volunteer with Stop Waste Tucson, a local zerowaste advocacy group. Learn more at StopWasteTucson.org.

A.J. Croce A New Chapter in a Musical Odyssey by Suzie Agrillo
F A.J. Croce
or much of his early career, virtuoso pianist A.J. Croce, son of legendary singersongwriter Jim Croce, avoided performing his father’s songs, choosing instead to establish his own artistic voice. A.J. is currently in the midst of the final tour of his celebrated “Croce Plays Croce” show. When he appears on September 15 at the incomparable Fox Tucson Theatre, he will perform a combination of his father’s hits alongside his own music.
Croce’s father died tragically in a plane crash in 1973 when he was 30, and A.J. was only 2 years old. Songs like “Time in a Bottle,” written by his father before A.J. was born, carry deep emotional significance for A.J. and have become central to his live performance. His musical heritage creates a dialogue between past and present; these performances highlight the timelessness of wellcrafted songs and the personal connection between generations. What sets A.J. apart is his refusal to be confined by expectations. While audiences are often initially drawn by his last name, they quickly discover a performer who honors tradition without being defined by it. His music channels the spirit of artists like Ray Charles, Leon Russell and Randy Newman—rich in storytelling, groove and emotional nuance, rather than merely echoing Jim Croce’s style. A.J. is passionate about all genres of music, but the bottom line is that it has soul. Ultimately, A.J. Croce’s story is about transformation. He took a name known around the world and built something new with it, proving that influence does not have to limit creativity. Through decades of music-making, he has established himself not merely as Jim Croce’s son, but as an accomplished, skilled artist with a voice—and a vision—entirely his own. For longtime fans of Jim Croce and newcomers alike, A.J. Croce offers a moving reminder that while time passes, great songs, and the stories behind them, still endure. He is carrying on a musical legacy while forging his own path. 12

We sat down for a Q&A interview with A.J. to talk about a life shaped by infinite talent, irreparable loss, and a deep love of music.
Q&A With Legendary Singer-Songwriter A.J. Croce Music has always been part of your life. Did you feel destined to become a musician?
I don’t think of playing music as my destiny, but rather as more of a calling. I have never considered playing music for fame or fortune. I gravitated to it as a gift I can share to make the world a better place.
Why did you choose to settle down in Nashville?
Nashville is a collaborative place to live in as a musician. Not that I didn’t have collaboration in Los Angeles or New York City, but there’s more of a hustle in those cities.
Your father, Jim Croce, remains one of America’s most beloved songwriters. What does his music mean to you today?
The stories told in my father’s songs are incredibly universal. He makes heroes out of everyday people. That was his gift. As a child, I knew him mostly through photographs and recordings, but as an adult, I’ve come to appreciate his songwriting even more.
Please tell us what the fans at the show can expect at Croce Plays Croce?
It’s the unexpected. Every night is unique. People come for the nostalgia and my father’s songs. I also have built a body of work I’m proud of that I perform. Every night I ask for requests. I have a skeleton of a set, but the middle is open for something different at every show, and I share stories, photographs and songs that connect my father’s music and my own journey. The band itself includes some incredibly soulful singers as well as an ensemble of incredibly talented musicians. We have as much fun or more than anyone else in the room.
How would you describe your own musical style?
Soul music—it draws from rock and roll, rhythm and blues, jazz, folk, pop and Latin music. I’ve never wanted to stay in one lane. I practice 4 to 5 hours every day if I’m not on tour. When I’m on tour, I practice 2 to 3 hours a day. When I’m not planning for tours, I’m composing.
A.J. Croce
A.J. Croce
What do you hope listeners take away from your performances that they might not expect?
The joy of the music. The concerts are intimate and dynamic, featuring storytelling, improvisation and a deep connection with the audience. Listeners can forget about the world for 90 minutes and just feel connected and entertained.
What keeps you inspired to keep your creativity flowing and the songwriting fresh?
I’m always finding new ways to tell a story.
Regardless of the genre, it’s already been done. What’s left is the combinations of genres. That’s where I get my inspiration for original songs.
The Neville Brothers, B.B. King, Ray Charles, John Oates, Floyd Dixon and James Brown.
I read that you lost your eyesight for a while as a child. How did that impact your music?
This is the last chance to hear me perform “Croce Plays Croce.” It’s a special show because I’ve discovered a way to share not only my father’s music, but also songs from my albums and the many artists that inspired us. This is a family legacy in which two generations are present through stories and music. It’s a one-of-a-kind performance, and I’m proud to be able to share it with the audience in Tucson.
I was legally blind from age four to age ten. After six years, I began to be able to see better with one eye. Being legally blind impacted me immensely. I was drawn to music and taking solace in it. During this difficult time, creating and performing music provided me with purpose and hope. I had access to my father’s albums as well as my grandfather’s music collection and through these albums, I was introduced to the music of Ray Charles. Listening to him helped me to find my identity as an artist and to create my own individualistic music.
Which musicians have you performed with?
In addition to playing solo gigs at jazz clubs, I’ve been fortunate enough to play with some serious legends, including Willie Nelson,
Is there anything else you’d like to tell our readers about the show?
Croce Plays Croce will be at the Fox Tucson Theatre, 17 West Congress, Tuesday, S eptember 15, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $46-$80 all-in. VIP packages are available. Introduction to Somatic Therapies Reconnecting Mind and Body in an Overstimulated World by Sheldon C. Baker
Somatic healing practices can provide a reset through movement and body awareness. According to Gina Nick, Ph.D., a naturopathic physician with 25 years of experience and an integrative medical practice in Los Angeles, “Somatic therapies are designed to address physical tension and release the stored emotions and stressors housed in the body.” These practices—which can be performed at home or with the help of a professional—forge a healthy, fluent connection between the mind and body by creating heightened self-awareness and boosting recovery and resilience. The result is sustained calmness and an improved ability to achieve serenity, focus and cognitive clarity.
Noticing the Body’s Messages
“Chronic stress doesn’t just affect your thoughts. It changes your biology,” explains Daniel Amen, M.D., a double board-certified psychiatrist, neuroscientist and author of multiple national bestsellers, including Change Your Brain, Change Your Pain: Breaking the Doom Loop to Heal Chronic Physical and Emotional Pain. “When stress hormones stay elevated for too long, they increase muscle tension, fire up inflammation and contribute to chronic pain. They also disrupt sleep, impair digestion and can even reduce blood flow to the brain, making you feel anxious, exhausted or mentally foggy.” Somatic therapy relies on interoception—awareness of body sensations—to identify and release stress and trauma. These sensations originate from the autonomic nervous system, which governs involuntary bodily functions like heart rate and digestion. 14

Examples of negative body sensations include clenching muscles, racing pulse, stomach churning, temperature fluctuations, tightness around the chest and tingling. Steven Bradshaw, a psychologist, somatic experiencing practitioner and founder of Beyond Psychology Center, in Los Angeles, explains that the autonomic nervous system features two subsystems that regulate safety: the sympathetic nervous system that mobilizes the body for action in dangerous situations and the parasympathetic nervous system to promote calmness and recovery. Chronic stress or trauma can get stuck in the sympathetic nervous system, causing a state of constant alertness. “The body is safety for the mind,” he remarks. “I use a mind-body approach that engages your inner healer to move from states of anxiety, burnout, disconnection and pain into states of goodness, flow and a deep sense of belonging in your own body.” Aimie Apigian, M.D., MS, MPH, founder of Trauma Healing Accelerated and author of The Biology of Trauma: How the Body Holds Fear, Pain, and Overwhelm, and How to Heal It explains, “Somatic therapies are body-based approaches that work at the level of sensation. Sometimes that means creating a sensation of safety in the body, and sometimes it means creating the sensation of overcoming a moment of powerlessness from the past, often

e are often told to “just breathe” when we feel distressed, overreactive, overstimulated, hyper-vigilant, exhausted or digitally overloaded. Stress is a common consequence of modern life, and sometimes, a few deep breaths can provide relief. However, when stress becomes ever-present and deep-seated, we may need a bit more help to release the tension in our muscles and to lower our heightened blood pressure out of fight-flight-or-freeze mode.
Mind-Body Practices
“As anyone who has ever danced knows, our feelings can be more readily accessed through movement and getting in touch with our body’s sensations, which is what somatic therapy does,” says Jacob Teitelbaum, M.D., a board-certified internist specializing in chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, sleep and pain, as well as the author of several books, including Pain Relief in 4 Simple Steps: Eliminating the Root Causes of Chronic Pain. While conventional talk therapy focuses on using the rational mind to release embedded stress, daily body-awareness activities can help people learn to process their tension while building emotional resilience.
Four-Count Breath: An excellent tension reliever and mental refresh, the four-count breath can be performed anywhere at any time. Inhale fully while counting to four, hold for four, exhale for four and pause for four. Repeat up to five times. Body Scan: This exercise is all about interoception and is done by noticing sensations from head to toe while sitting or lying down comfortably. Full-Body Shake: Standing up and shaking arms, legs and shoulders for 30 seconds not only loosen limbs but also relieves pentup stress. Rolling the head in a circular motion can also release knotted tension at the base of the neck. Humming: The vibrations from humming (either a tune or single note like an “Om”) physically calms the vagus nerve, which bidirectionally carries information via electrical and chemical messages to and from the brain. A 2023 study published in the medical journal Cureus involving 23 participants revealed that humming significantly lowered stress biomarkers compared to physical activity and sleep, with positive impacts on the parasympathetic nervous system to reduce the fight-or-flight response.

through movement, by finally doing the self-defense movement you were not able to do when the real event happened. The benefit is that we uncouple a sensation from the meaning of danger it got paired with. That can be an internal sensation, like the twisting of your gut, or an external one, like a particular sight or smell. The sensation stops automatically signaling danger, and the body gets to learn a new response rather than only understanding the old one.”
Other self-somatic therapies can calm the body and mind, creating a sense of safety, which quiets racing thoughts and brightens the person’s outlook. “The aim of a daily practice is to create a sensation of internal safety or a felt sense of support in the body,” Apigian counsels.
Amen recommends starting with basic practices, including slow diaphragmatic breathing, daily body movements, good quality sleep and time spent in nature. One of his favorite calming strategies is the butterfly hug to soothe the brain and body. “Simply place your hands on your opposite shoulders and gently stroke them downward,” he explains.

Mindful Movement: Moving with intention and body awareness can deepen in-the-moment joy and appreciation while also reducing anxiety, releasing tension and improving mood. Start with deep breathing, then turn attention inward for a head-to-toe body check while moving. This can be practiced while washing the dishes or participating in a fitness class. Guided Imagery: A technique that can be performed alone or with a therapist, guided imagery utilizes breathwork and meditation while envisioning an object or scene, using all of the senses. Capitalizing on the mind-body connection, multi-sensory visualization reduces stress and relaxes muscles.
Guided Therapies
Long-term, somatic therapies with the help of expert practitioners can result in creating healthier habitual emotional patterns, which contribute to repairing mood imbalance and creating sustained well-being. Craniosacral therapy is a gentle, hands-on approach that releases physical tension to enhance relaxation. It focuses on the skull, spine and craniosacral system, which includes the cerebrospinal fluid, fascia and soft tissues surrounding the central nervous system. A 2023 study published in Behavioral Sciences (Basel, Switzerland) involving male firefighter cadets found that five weekly sessions of craniosacral therapy significantly reduced cortisol levels, a primary stress hormone. Rolfing somatic movement is a touch-based technique designed to unblock or release protective posture patterns such as shrugged shoulders, bent postures and clenched jawlines from unresolved stress, anxiety and trauma. According to the Dr. Ida Rolf Institute, Rolfing resets the body’s stress response by releasing restrictions in the fascia—the connective tissue network that surrounds, separates and holds together the body’s muscles, bones, organs, blood vessels and nerve fibers. 16

Trauma-sensitive yoga or trauma-informed yoga is designed to cultivate a compassionate awareness of what is happening in the body in the present moment and to develop the ability to take effective action based on that knowledge. It empowers individuals to reconnect with their bodies in a safe, non-judgmental environment and regulate the nervous system. A 2018 qualitative analysis published in International Journal of Stress Management identified key emotional themes that emerged from engaging in trauma-sensitive yoga, including gratitude, compassion, relatedness, acceptance, centeredness and empowerment. Somatic experiencing is a specialized therapy designed to retrain the nervous system by processing trauma in small, manageable sessions. Instead of focusing on the story of the trauma, the therapist guides the client to notice physical sensations, while providing a feeling of safety and well-being. This treatment approach releases vestigial negativity and creates a new, intuitive, more deeply self-aware and empowered way of sustaining emotional well-being. A 2021 literature review published in European Journal of Psychotraumatology reported that somatic experiencing positively impacts symptoms related to post-traumatic stress disorder, notably reducing affective and somatic complaints while improving overall well-being.
Eye-Movement Therapies
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) centers on moving the eyes in a specific manner while being guided to process traumatic or stressful memories, which are stored differently than normal or happy ones. Reprocessing helps to repair mind injury caused by the traumatic event. Brainspotting (BSP), a newer neuro-based therapy, uses eye position or “brainspots” to access and release unresolved emotional energy stored in the limbic system and subcortical region of the brain. Compared to EMDR, BSP is more somatic and intuitive. In a 2022 study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, just one 40-minute session of EMDR or BSP was found to have beneficial effects in processing distressing memories.
Finding Relief and Resolution
“Somatic therapies recognize that many emotional and physical symptoms are protective responses rather than a mental disorder, weakness or failure,” says Annie Wright, a licensed psychotherapist and relational trauma specialist. ur outer appearance may reflect our inner experience. Stress, life experiences, memory and self-perception influence how we feel in our bodies and how we present ourselves to the world. What appears on the surface may point to deeper patterns of stress, protection or imbalance.
The Inner Path to Radiant Health
Physical and emotional stress affect overall well-being, and unresolved experiences may be difficult to recognize or work through on our own. From a holistic perspective, addressing the whole person—body, mind, emotions and spirit—offers an opportunity to explore these patterns and support greater balance. Some holistic and spiritual traditions also explore inherited patterns and past experiences as part of understanding emotional and energetic imbalances. These perspectives offer individuals another way to reflect on their experiences and explore personal healing. Suzanne Pear, RN, PhD, licensed aesthetician and quantum energy practitioner, provides aesthetic and energy treatments designed to support clients in reconnecting with their sense of well-being and revealing their natural beauty. When Restlessness Has Something to Say by Deb Beroset
same kind of life has been postponed for months. A calendar can be manageable while its owner no longer wants their days to look like that. Nothing dramatic has to be wrong. Sometimes the discomfort is pointing toward something that has become true.

One question I have been returning to lately is: What am I no longer available for?
T
here are times when the first sign of change is almost embarrassingly ordinary.
A room that has been perfectly acceptable for years suddenly feels unbearable. Nothing is broken. Still, there is a startlingly clear thought: I cannot spend another year of my life in here. Or a webpage for an acting class keeps getting reopened, despite no theatrical ambitions and no sensible explanation for the interest. A calendar that once felt satisfying begins to feel oppressive. Someone hears themselves say, “I want a quieter life,” and notices the relief that arrives before the mind has time to object. These moments are easy to dismiss. Restlessness is inconvenient. Desire can seem indulgent, especially when life is, by most measures, good. So the instinct is often to smooth the feeling over. Get more sleep. Take a vacation. Practice gratitude. 18
Tucson Edition
Sometimes that’s exactly what’s called for. And sometimes the feeling keeps returning because something in life is no longer willing to be ignored.
Listening to What Disturbs the Peace
We tend to think of inner balance as calm: a settled nervous system, a manageable schedule, enough time for exercise and sleep. All of that matters. But balance in a living system is not the same thing as stillness. Think about walking. Human beings are built to move. Walking keeps us healthy not despite all that shifting and adjusting, but in part because of it. Movement is part of how the body stays well. Our inner lives may need movement, too. The job can still be respectable while the thought of doing it for five more years produces a sinking feeling. A relationship can be loving while the conversation about whether both people still want the
NaturalTucson.com
Not what should I stop doing? “Should” invites the whole committee into the room: family expectations, cultural rules, self-improvement advice, your best friend’s opinion. “No longer available for” is quieter. It asks what’s already begun to lose its hold. Then comes the companion question: What am I becoming available for?
Following the Heat
Recently, one woman wrote to me about wanting to take an acting class at 65. Another, after years of career demands and caretaking, described wanting a quieter life—and dancing. “The only grind I now want,” she wrote, “is from coffee.” That’s what I call heat: the place where something has energy. Heat can show up as desire, curiosity, irritation, relief or a subject that keeps returning. It does not mean do this immediately. If Lisbon has heat; nobody needs to sell the house and move to Portugal before lunch. It means there is something worth noticing. Inner balance is not about obeying every impulse. Nor is it about becoming so competent at managing life that every inconvenient feeling gets managed out of existence.
Sometimes what unsettles us is precisely what deserves attention.
Intuitive, Healing Arts & Yoga
A Small Move Changes the Conversation
The mind often wants certainty before movement. What does this mean? Where is it going? Is this really what I want? That’s a lot to ask of a flicker. A small move can reveal more than another month of thinking. Take the acting class once. Visit the city for an ordinary weekend, with a grocery store and morning coffee instead of a tourist itinerary. Turn the conversation rehearsed in the shower into five minutes of the real one. A move gives possibility contact with reality. Then reality gets to answer back. Something becomes clearer. Energy rises or falls. The next move changes.

Closing the Gaps in Senior Health Care Insurance
Hospital Indemnity Plans
For individuals enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, hospital indemnity insurance can provide an additional layer of protection. Medicare Advantage plans may have significant copayments associated with an inpatient hospital stay or care in a skilled nursing facility.

M
edicare is an important step toward protecting health and finances in retirement. But enrolling in Medicare is only the beginning. Once Medicare coverage is in place, the next important question becomes: What isn’t covered?
For many Medicare beneficiaries, the answer can come as a surprise. Medicare provides valuable health care coverage, but depending on the type of Medicare coverage selected, beneficiaries may still face deductibles, copayments, coinsurance and expenses for services or care that Medicare does not fully cover. That is where ancillary and supplemental insurance products can become an important part of retirement planning. These products are designed to address specific financial risks and help fill some of the gaps that may remain after Medicare coverage is established.

A hospital indemnity plan can provide benefits for covered hospital or skilled nursing stays, helping offset some of these potentially large out-of-pocket expenses. Rather than being caught off guard by a substantial copayment following a hospital stay, beneficiaries can plan ahead for that possibility.
Cancer, Heart Attack and Stroke Plans
A serious diagnosis can bring expenses that extend well beyond the medical bills themselves. Cancer, heart attack and stroke plans can provide additional funds following a covered diagnosis or event. Depending on the policy, those benefits can help with expenses associated with treatment and recovery, as well as other costs that may arise during a serious illness. The additional financial support can give individuals and their families more flexibility at a time when their primary focus should be health and recovery.
Home Health Care Plans
For many people, one of the most important goals is simple: stay at home for as long as possible. Home health care plans can help make that goal more achievable by providing benefits for certain types of extended care and assistance in the home. Depending on the plan and benefit requirements, coverage may help with a home health aide and other forms of assistance with everyday needs. Some plans may even provide benefits when care or assistance is being provided by a spouse, family member, friend or neighbor. This can be especially meaningful because family members are often the first people to step in when someone needs additional help at home.
Short-Term Care Plans
Traditional long-term care insurance can provide valuable protection, but it may not be affordable or attainable for everyone. Premiums can be costly, and health underwriting may make qualifying difficult for some individuals. Short-term care insurance may offer another option. These plans are designed to provide benefits for a shorter period of care, both at home and in a facility, and may offer a more practical alternative for individuals who cannot afford or qualify for traditional long-term care coverage.
Look Beyond Medicare
The goal is not to purchase insurance simply for the sake of having more insurance. It is to identify the risks Medicare or a Medicare plan may leave behind and determine which gaps are important to address based on an individual’s health, finances, family situation and priorities. Once Medicare is taken care of, it is worth asking: If something happens tomorrow, where are the gaps—and is there a plan in place to help fill them?

o evaluate evidence-based research for a health treatment, it is important to comprehend the research methodology, study design, included and excluded evidence, and the potential existence of bias in the study’s design, execution or funding. This understanding is essential before drawing any conclusions. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are the gold standard for evaluating the efficacy of medical treatments with minimal bias and determining if an intervention surpasses placebo effects. However, individualized homeopathy poses unique methodological challenges that differ 22

from testing a standardized pharmaceutical drug. Unlike conventional RCT drug trials, where all participants with the same diagnosis typically receive the same medication and dose and are evaluated uniformly over specified time periods, classical homeopathy is tailored to the individual patient rather than the disease diagnosis. Two patients with migraines, seasonal allergies or arthritis may receive different remedies based on their physical symptoms, emotional state, sleep patterns, food cravings, environmental sensitivities, personality traits and constitution. As a result, researchers designing
NaturalTucson.com
and conducting homeopathy trials face the following challenges that hinder the use of testing models developed for single pharmaceutical compounds: • Participants with the same diagnosis often receive different remedies, making it difficult to standardize interventions across a trial. • Homeopaths frequently adjust remedies as symptoms evolve, whereas conventional RCTs require treatments to remain fixed throughout the study. • Homeopathic care includes lengthy consultations, individualized assessments,
follow-up visits and therapeutic relationships that may independently contribute to outcomes beyond the remedy itself.
conditions and post-surgical recovery, but the certainty of evidence remains low to moderate due to study limitations.
• Patients may seek improvements in well-being, energy, resilience or quality of life in addition to symptom relief, yet clinical trials measure only disease-specific endpoints.
The Scientific Debate Extends Beyond Clinical Trials
What Clinical Studies Demonstrate
Many studies on homeopathy exist, but their quality differs greatly. Some treatments, such as Arnica montana for pain management, show more promising evidence than others. Systematic reviews, which are toptier research tools that compile, evaluate and synthesize empirical studies, find the evidence on homeopathy inconclusive due to issues like small sample sizes, inconsistent study designs, varying prescribing methods, difficulty blinding individualized treatments, publication bias and poor methodologies. These limitations prevent the determination of whether benefits are due to specific homeopathic effects, nonspecific therapeutic effects, placebo responses or a combination of all three.
Some Reviews Reach Divergent Conclusions
Systematic reviews can reach different conclusions due to varying inclusion criteria. One review might include all studies regardless of quality, while another might focus only on larger trials or low-riskof-bias studies. These design differences affect the conclusions. For example, the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council found no reliable evidence supporting homeopathy for any health condition after analyzing only studies with strict methodological criteria. By contrast, a meta-analysis conducted by the University of Bern in Germany specifically focused on individualized homeopathy. The analysis concluded that statistically significant effects may exist for treating conditions such as childhood diarrhea, respiratory
Perhaps the greatest controversy about homeopathy pertains to its mechanism rather than its clinical outcomes. Many homeopathic medicines are diluted beyond Avogadro’s limit, leaving no measurable molecules of the original substance. Conventional chemistry and pharmacology struggle to explain how these highly diluted remedies could produce biological effects. Homeopathy researchers argue that these findings, along with advances in understanding complex biological systems, justify further investigation into mechanisms involving nanostructures, water organization, electromagnetic signaling and other physical processes that are not yet fully understood.
A Growing Consensus for More Research Arises
Scientists on both sides of the homeopathy debate agree that future research must combine the methodological rigor of randomized trials with study designs that more accurately reflect clinical practice. This requires larger sample sizes, transparent
reporting, standardized outcome measures, longer follow-up periods and independent replication across multiple research centers. Additionally, homeopathy study designs should better align the research methodology with the intervention being studied without sacrificing scientific rigor. The goal is to maintain the standard for evidence while formulating research questions that accurately represent the personalized nature of homeopathy practice. This approach will yield clearer insights into where homeopathy offers meaningful benefits, where it falls short and how it can best contribute to evidence-informed, patient-centered integrative healthcare.
