What does healing mean to you?
Sometimes healing asks us to slow down enough to listen. I’ve also come to believe that healing is not something we should think about only when something is wrong. Prevention is an important part of the picture. The choices we make every day can support our well-being long before a health concern demands our attention. That might mean moving our bodies, finding ways to manage stress, eating nourishing foods, nurturing meaningful relationships, getting regular health screenings or exploring practices that help us feel more balanced and connected. There is no single approach to healing that works for everyone. What supports one person may not be what another person needs. Part of our own journey is learning to recognize what feels supportive, asking questions and making thoughtful choices about the practices we bring into our lives. I find that empowering. We don’t have to wait until we are struggling to begin caring for ourselves. We can start where we are, with small steps that support the body, mind and spirit from the inside out. This issue explores that broader understanding of healing. Rather than offering one definition or one prescribed path, the stories invite us to consider the many ways people seek greater health, balance, awareness and vitality. My hope is that you’ll find something in these pages that speaks to you—an idea that inspires you to try a new practice, look at your health from a different perspective or simply pause and listen to what your body may be asking for. And there is even more to explore online. Visit NaturalTucson.com for plenty of onlineexclusive content, additional stories and wellness inspiration throughout the month.
Here’s to healing—from the inside out.

As we put together this issue of Natural Awakenings Tucson, I found myself thinking about how many different paths there are toward healing. Some are physical, while others are emotional, mental or spiritual. Sometimes healing begins with something as simple as getting more rest, spending time in nature, changing how we nourish ourselves or paying closer attention to what Holly Baker our bodies are telling us.
Wherever you are on your journey, I hope this issue reminds you that healing can begin with awareness, continue through the choices we make and take many forms along the way.

It’s a simple question, but the answer is deeply personal. Healing may mean recovering from an illness or injury, finding relief from stress, processing an emotional experience or simply feeling more like yourself again.

During AEP, beneficiaries may enroll in or switch Medicare Advantage plans, return to Original Medicare or change a standalone Part D prescription drug plan.
The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), October 15 through December 7, is an important opportunity for beneficiaries to review their health and prescription drug coverage for the coming year. Health Briefs How Does Healing Actually Happen?
When we talk about healing, we often focus on what we do to make it happen: medications, surgery, nutrition, physical therapy, complementary therapies and rest. These can all play important roles, but none of them actually “heals” the body. They provide treatment, support or the conditions the body needs to do the healing itself.
Think about something as simple as a cut. We can clean it, protect it and perhaps close it with stitches, but we don’t consciously tell the skin how to knit itself back together. The body already knows how to begin that process. Healing becomes more complicated when we look beyond a simple injury. Stress, sleep, nutrition, our environment, emotional state and relationships can all influence how we feel and function. Increasingly, we’re recognizing that healing isn’t just about addressing one isolated symptom or body part. The whole person is involved. This is the idea at the heart of Bio-Touch: The body already knows how to heal. Through gentle touch, Bio-Touch works with the body’s own healing ability rather than trying to direct it. Perhaps there is something else happening as well—the simple human experience of being touched with care, compassion and love. Perhaps one of the most useful questions we can ask about healing isn’t simply, “What will make me better?” but “What does my body need in order to do what it already knows how to do?” Bio-Touch in-person training is offered at 5634 E. Pima St., Tucson. Register early, as spaces are limited. For more information or to make an appointment, visit JustTouch.com.
Menopause Symptoms: It’s Not All in Your Head A common refrain from patients is, “I don’t feel like myself,” or, “I’ve gained weight, but I haven’t changed my eating or exercise habits.” Often, they see their doctor because of trouble sleeping, low energy, weight gain, depression or irritability. Blood work may reveal high cholesterol or low thyroid function, leading to medications and advice to eat healthier and exercise. They follow those recommendations but still don’t feel better. Even when lab results improve, they may wonder if the symptoms are in their head. When women’s hormones fluctuate during perimenopause and menopause, systems are affected. Less recognized symptoms include dry skin, short-term memory problems, rapid pulse rate, cramping, nausea, sleep disturbances, joint and muscle pain and anxiety. These symptoms may be hormone-related. Historically, menopause was viewed as a normal decline. Fear surrounding hormone replacement contributed to decreased use in the 1990s and 2000s, and concerns persist despite research showing potential benefits of HRT, including preventing osteoporosis and improving sleep. Finding a practitioner trained in menopause health can help women understand symptoms, consider testing and discuss hormone replacement options. Choosing treatment is a partnership between a woman and her doctor. The symptoms of perimenopause and menopause are not all in your head, nor are they a normal part of getting older. HRT should be a conversation women have with their medical provider. Dr. Alicia Miller, ND, is a women’s hormone specialist practicing functional medicine, anti-aging medicine and weight management through MyMenopauseDoctor, a telemedicine practice. For more information or to make an appointment visit MyMenopauseDoctor.com or call 520-244-3852.

Healing & Psychic Weight by Rain (Danielle) Dvorak To truly change the body, in other words, heal, one must start transformation on a nonphysical level. Just using a physical approach (like Western medicine) is only addressing one of the aspects of our being, as we are multidimensional beings. Of course, exercise, sleep, food and supplements all have an energetic aspect to them, but it goes much deeper than that. As mentioned before, change is an energetic principle, not a physical one. To heal the physical body, transformation must occur first on energetic levels. That means understanding our attachments or anchors—the psychic weight you carry, predominantly on emotional and mental levels. You are encouraged to think about all of this, contemplate it, ask the universe for input, ask your guides or whatever you believe in for guidance, ask for help to understand and move forward. One last thing...
T
o heal, we must shift our energetic nature, meaning nonphysical change. Nobody else can do this for us. They can light the way, but we have to walk the path.
Change is an energetic principle, not a physical one. To truly heal, there needs to be a shift of our energetic nature, which is the source of our physical body. That means understanding our attachments or anchors—the psychic weight we carry. What is “psychic weight”? Regrets, guilt, unfinished business, emotional baggage, chronic fear or anxiety, betrayals, self-betrayal, unforgiven grudges, past resentments and more. The more psychic weight one carries or holds, the slower evolving and healing occur, because that psychic weight creates our relationship to the speed at which change can happen.

A Steady Hand in Uncertain Times Dr. Teri Jackson’s Patient-Centered Approach to Oncology by Suzie Agrillo
examining the relationships among metabolism, inflammation, immune function, hormones, digestion, stress, environment, lifestyle and emotional health. The eventual focus on oncology became deeply personal after the loss of both Jackson’s father and brother to aggressive forms of cancer.
Cancer Care Becomes More Individualized
Cancer treatment has evolved considerably. Rather than looking only at where a cancer originates, physicians can increasingly examine the molecular characteristics of an individual tumor. Genomic testing, targeted therapies, immunotherapies and sophisticated imaging have expanded treatment possibilities. Of particular interest is the tumor micro environment—the biological surroundings in which cancer develops and behaves.
Dr. Teri Jackson, NMD
I
n the complex and often overwhelming world of cancer care, physicians are tasked with more than diagnosing and treating disease. They must also guide patients through some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. For Dr. Teri Jackson, NMD, that responsibility is both a professional calling and a deeply personal mission. A graduate of Bastyr University with training in naturopathic medicine, Jackson brings together emerging cancer science and a whole-person approach to care. Based in Tucson, Jackson focuses on integrative oncology, supporting patients alongside conventional cancer treatment. Central to this philosophy is the recognition that cancer requires appropriate 12
Tucson Edition
medical treatment while the health, resilience and quality of life of the person experiencing it also deserve attention.
A Patient-First Philosophy
No two cancer journeys are alike. Modern oncology has introduced increasingly sophisticated treatments, but individualized care remains at the heart of Jackson’s practice. “Every patient comes with their own story, fears and goals,” Jackson says. “Treatment isn’t just about targeting cancer—it’s about supporting a person through the process.” An early fascination with why illness develops—not simply how to treat it after it appears—led to naturopathic medicine. That training provided a framework for
NaturalTucson.com
“Cancer cells do not exist in isolation,” Jackson explains. “They interact with immune cells, blood vessels, connective tissue, inflammatory signals, metabolic conditions and many other components of what we call the tumor microenvironment.” This systems-level understanding can create a bridge between conventional oncology and whole-person care.
Looking at the Biological “Terrain”
One way to understand the body surrounding a tumor is as an ecosystem or “terrain.” An integrative evaluation may consider glucose and insulin regulation, inflammation, immune function, hormonal signaling, circulation, digestion, nutrient status, toxic exposures, sleep and stress physiology. Another consideration is “adaptive capacity”—how effectively the body responds to stress, recovers and maintains balance.
“This doesn’t mean that changing the terrain makes the tumor disappear, and it isn’t a substitute for appropriate cancer treatment,” Jackson emphasizes. “It means we are caring for the biological environment and the person in addition to addressing the cancer itself.” Conventional oncology may target a tumor through surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy or targeted therapies. Integrative oncology can provide a complementary perspective by examining broader factors that may affect health and quality of life. “I don’t see these approaches as competing philosophies,” Jackson says. “Ideally, they complement one another.”
Navigating an Overwhelming Diagnosis
A cancer diagnosis can bring an enormous amount of information, fear and pressure in a very short period. Patients may suddenly be learning unfamiliar medical terminology while facing potentially lifechanging decisions. “Often the first thing people need is not another list of things to do,” Jackson says. “They need someone to help them make sense of what is happening.” Slowing down the information, identifying immediate priorities and developing a manageable plan can help make an overwhelming situation feel more navigable. Integrative medicine also does not mean rejecting conventional medicine, nor does “natural” automatically mean safe. Herbs, nutrients and supplements can have significant biological effects and may interact with medications or cancer treatments. Cancer care should never exist in a silo. A care team might include a medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, surgeon, primary-care physician, naturopathic physician, nutritionist and mental-health professional. Communication among practitioners is particularly important when supplements or natural therapies are being considered.
From Surviving to Thriving
A recurring theme in Jackson’s approach is “thriving” through cancer. That does not mean pretending cancer is positive or expecting an upbeat attitude every day. Rather, the goal is to look beyond the diagnosis and preserve as much quality of life as possible. “How can we preserve strength? How can we support energy and nourishment? How can we maintain muscle, mobility, sleep, relationships and emotional well-being?” Jackson asks. The meaning of thriving can change throughout the cancer journey. At times it may mean feeling strong and active. During a difficult week of treatment, it might simply mean having enough energy to enjoy dinner with family or take a walk outside. Community is another important part of the picture. Cancer affects partners, children, friends, coworkers and caregivers. Practical help with meals, transportation, child care and appointments can be invaluable, while emotional connection can help patients feel less alone. Caregivers need support as well. “Healing doesn’t happen entirely inside a doctor’s office,” Jackson says. “Relationships, belonging and having meaningful support matter tremendously.”
Hope Grounded in Reality
A cancer diagnosis involves many factors outside an individual’s control, yet there may still be meaningful areas where patients can participate actively in their care. Nutrition, movement, metabolic health, sleep, stress regulation, relationships and asking informed questions are among them. The goal is empowerment without creating a sense of responsibility for circumstances beyond a patient’s control. That distinction becomes especially important in a world filled with conflicting cancer information. Patients can be vulnerable to promises of miracle cures, rigid
protocols or claims that the right food or supplement can control an outcome. Hope, Jackson believes, should be grounded. “There is a difficult balance between helping someone recognize how much they can do to support themselves while also acknowledging the uncertainty inherent in cancer,” Jackson says. Despite the emotional challenges of the work, both patients and the rapidly evolving science of cancer continue to provide motivation. “Our understanding of cancer metabolism, immunology, the tumor microenvironment and systems biology continues to evolve,” Jackson says. “I don’t think I will ever reach a point where I feel finished learning.” Ultimately, integrative oncology does not have to present patients with an either/ or choice. Modern cancer treatment has made tremendous advances, while broader questions about metabolism, inflammation, nutrition, immune function, stress physiology and quality of life can remain part of the conversation. The larger philosophy extends beyond fighting cancer. It is about helping create conditions in which the whole person has the greatest possible capacity to adapt, recover and thrive—wherever that person may be in the cancer journey. Ready to explore a whole-person approach to cancer care? Whether newly diagnosed, undergoing treatment or navigating survivorship, patients can learn how integrative oncology may complement their existing care and support overall health and quality of life. Turn Down the Heat What Inflammaging May Reveal About Aging and Restoration by Sharon Whiteley
It would be an overstatement to call inflammation the root cause of chronic disease. Biology is rarely that simple. But chronic, low-grade inflammation is increasingly recognized as intertwined with many of the conditions and biological changes associated with aging. In fact, chronic inflammation is now recognized as one of the hallmarks of aging. And that raises a fascinating question: What happens when inflammation itself becomes part of the aging story?
Meet Inflammaging
“Inflammaging” describes the persistent, low-grade inflammation that tends to increase with age. Unlike the inflammation we notice when we get hurt, it can be remarkably quiet. No swelling. No obvious pain. No alarm bell. More like a smoldering fire in the background. The term “inflamm-aging” is not new. It was coined by Claudio Franceschi and colleagues in a peer-reviewed paper in 2000. It, however, is having a bit of a resurgence.
I
nflammation is having a moment. But what happens when it becomes part of the aging story? For years, inflammation was something we mostly associated with an injury, an infection, a swollen joint—or something else we could actually feel. That conversation has changed. Today, inflammation seems to be everywhere. We hear about it in discussions of heart disease, diabetes, metabolic health, autoimmune conditions, cognitive decline and a growing list of chronic illnesses. Scientists are increasingly interested not simply in inflammation as a necessary response, but in what happens when inflammatory processes persist over time.

Research increasingly points to a complex relationship between inflammaging and other biological processes of aging, including cellular senescence, immune-system changes and mitochondrial dysfunction. Inflammation may not simply be a consequence of getting older; it may also contribute to age-related decline and disease.
So What Can We Do About It?
Rather than asking only, “How do we treat the diseases of aging?” perhaps we should also ask: “How do we create conditions in which the body has a better opportunity to restore, repair and regulate itself?” That shift—from fixing what is wrong to creating conditions for restoration—is compelling to me.
Back to the Earth
And that is where some of the less conventional areas of health research become interesting—including grounding, or earthing. The idea is remarkably simple: physical electrical contact between the human body and
the Earth’s surface, whether through bare feet outdoors or through conductive materials designed to provide that connection indoors. I’ve been a student, participant and follower of grounding research for many years as it sits at the intersection of several things that fascinate me: the human body, our increasingly technological environment, sleep, restoration and our relationship with something very old—the Earth itself. Grounding is not simply an idea without a scientific literature. Peer-reviewed research has been published for more than two decades, with studies examining areas including inflammation, immune response, wound healing, sleep, pain and physiological stress. A 2015 review specifically examined grounding in relation to inflammation and immune response.
Not Proven Doesn’t Mean Not Interesting
That doesn’t mean grounding has been proven to prevent or reverse inflammaging. It hasn’t. The research on this front deserves more rigorous investigation, including larger and independently replicated studies. But there is enough published work to make grounding an interesting area of inquiry—not something that should simply be dismissed because it doesn’t fit neatly into conventional health conversations. For me, that distinction matters.
Restoration, Not Just Recovery
Perhaps the most interesting future of healthy aging won’t come from one miracle intervention. It may come from understanding the many small environmental and behavioral signals that influence our biology—how we sleep, move, eat, manage stress, interact with technology, spend time in nature, and perhaps even how we reconnect electrically with the natural world. Maybe the goal isn’t simply to recover from what modern life demands of us. Maybe it is to create the conditions for restoration. And perhaps that is a more interesting way to think about aging altogether. Not as something to fight. But as a biological process we can learn to understand—and support.
Turn Down the Heat
If inflammaging represents one of the quiet forces pushing the aging process in the wrong direction, then learning how to turn down the heat—and create more opportunities for restoration—may become an increasingly important part of what it means to age well. Aging is not a disease to be defeated. It is a biological process to be understood—and tended to with care. ave you ever wondered about the benefits of energy healing? Is it real? Can it really help? Some might ask. Energy healing is as varied as wine varieties. There is great diversity in healing modalities, and depending upon who the practitioner is and the type of healing being offered, the results can fluctuate a great deal. There are phenomenal healers out there and just as many ineffective ones. Prior to making an appointment, do some due diligence, ask for references and book a session if it feels like the right thing to do. The following examples are from recent healing sessions and real-life issues: Client A came for a healing session with a lifelong issue of rejection and abandonment from her family, especially her mother.
NaturalTucson.com
She came out to her mother as a teenager and was immediately rejected. For deeper wounds and lifelong issues, Spirit has guided that a series of four sessions after the initial evaluation session can significantly help release and heal the wounds and issues. After the second of four sessions, she sent a text: “The work we are doing is deeply personal, down to my core. Yesterday’s session broke me open, and I have a lot of deep processing to do. You’re an amazing healer!” Client B came with the trauma of sexual abuse when she was younger. Now in her late 50s, she was able to release decades of feeling unlovable and inadequate. Selfworth was nonexistent. The release of toxic
Intuitive, Healing Arts & Yoga
energy from her lower chakras was palpable. She requested a second session to go deeper.
None of the clients had shared anything about these issues in advance. They came to light during the healing sessions and were confirmed afterward in discussion. Energy healing can assist with many different issues, including claiming your power, self-love, self-worth, releasing negative and toxic energies that no longer serve you, and dealing with abandonment and betrayal, guilt, anger and even hatred. It’s important to know that when negative energies and belief systems are released, they need to be replaced with higher frequencies, as well as the light and love of God, The Universe, All That Is or whatever you want to call it. Everyone has the ability to heal and raise their frequency, or vibration, to a higher level. A person has to want it, however, and be ready to address the issues that have been keeping them stuck and unhappy. CJ Walker is an energy healer and owner of The Temple of Isis Healing Center, LLC, located at 4791 N. Oakwood Dr., Tucson. Client C’s session revealed an issue with abundance. She had experienced financial lack for as long as she could remember, no matter how hard she worked. It identified as a past-life issue bleeding into this lifetime, and Spirit facilitated an Awakened Vow Break to release her from past vows of poverty in other lifetimes.

Beyond the Breast What Is Your Body Trying To Tell You? by Lisa Holliday
The Body Is Interconnected
A breast thermogram focuses on the breasts, chest and nearby lymphatic regions. A halfbody study expands the view to include the head, neck, thyroid region, back, chest, abdomen and pelvic region. A full-body study continues from head to toe, including the arms, hands, legs, knees and feet. A broader view can be useful because circulation, lymphatic flow, nerve pathways, muscle tension, posture, dental health and previous injuries may all influence how heat is distributed across the body’s surface.
W
hen most people hear the word thermography, they immediately think of breast health. Breast thermography is an important service, but the breasts are not separate from the rest of the body. Everything is connected. Beginning with a half-body or full-body thermogram can provide a broader picture of the body’s thermal patterns while establishing a personal baseline that can be followed over time.
Thermography uses a specialized infrared camera to detect and map heat emitted from the body’s surface. A clinical thermographer captures images using standardized preparation, positioning and imaging protocols. The study is then sent to a qualified medical doctor trained in thermographic interpretation, who reviews the images and provides a written report with observations and recommendations for appropriate follow-up. Thermography does not diagnose disease or replace mammography, ultrasound, laboratory testing or medical examination. It is an adjunctive tool that can provide another layer of information and encourage people to become more proactive participants in their health. 18
Tucson Edition
When viewing breast images, for example, it may be helpful to also see the surrounding chest, underarm, neck and upper-back regions. Dental concerns involving the teeth, gums or jaw may also create thermal patterns that warrant further evaluation. A pattern in one area does not automatically explain a pattern elsewhere, but viewing multiple regions may provide useful context for the interpreting physician and other health care practitioners. Both hot and cold patterns can provide information. Thermography is not simply about finding “hot spots.” The interpreting physician also evaluates cooler areas, symmetry and asymmetry, vascular patterns and differences between one side of the body and the other.
Prevention Begins With Awareness
A thermogram may reveal a thermal pattern that is not visible from the outside, sometimes before an obvious symptom is noticed. This does not mean every warm or cool area represents a health condition. Instead, the information may encourage questions or additional evaluation when appropriate. Thermography does not claim to prevent illness. Its preventive value is in the awareness it can create, helping people make more informed choices about their care.
NaturalTucson.com
Establishing a Thermal Baseline
Every person has an individual thermal “fingerprint.” An initial half-body or fullbody study documents thermal patterns at that moment and establishes a baseline for future comparison. One study provides a snapshot. Comparison studies can create a story. When follow-up images are taken using consistent preparation, positioning and protocols, the interpreting physician can evaluate whether patterns remain stable or meaningful changes have occurred. A new or changing pattern may support a recommendation for further evaluation by a qualified health care practitioner. Comparison studies may also document thermal changes following dental care, physical therapy, chiropractic treatment, injury recovery, lifestyle changes or other practitioner-directed care. Thermography cannot prove that a particular treatment caused a change, but it can provide a visual record that complements other clinical information. A breast thermogram may be appropriate for someone focused specifically on breast monitoring. A half-body study provides broader context throughout the torso, while a full-body study establishes the most comprehensive head-to-toe baseline. At Inflammation Imaging, the goal is to help clients see their bodies from a different perspective, establish a meaningful baseline and follow their thermal patterns over time. Thermography is gentle, noninvasive, radiation-free and requires no contact or compression. The body is always communicating. Sometimes, the first step in prevention is learning how to listen. Lisa Holliday is a clinical thermographer and owner of Inflammation Imaging. To learn more about thermography or schedule an appointment, call 520-468-1530 or visit InflammationImaging.com. Inflammation Imaging is located at 405 W. Cool Drive in Oro Valley. See ad, page 7.
Once it is cool, cut the poached chicken into 1-inch diced pieces and place them in a medium bowl. Add the mayonnaise, curry, paprika, salt and pepper; fold together until the ingredients are well mixed and the spices are evenly incorporated.

YIELD: 2 TO 4 SERVINGS
2 cups chicken stock ½ lb boneless skinless chicken breast ½ cup mayonnaise 1 tsp curry powder ¼ tsp paprika ¼ tsp salt ¼ tsp freshly ground pepper 1 medium apple (Gala, Cortland or Honeycrisp), cored and diced 1 Tbsp raisins, chopped ½ cup torn fresh parsley leaves

In a small saucepan, add the chicken stock and set over medium-high heat. When the stock is just starting to bubble, reduce the heat to medium and submerge the chicken breast in the broth. Cook, turning once, for about 15 minutes, until the chicken is totally cooked through and firm. Remove the chicken breast from the stock and set on a plate to cool. (Strain and save any leftover stock for another use.)

Straightening Up Exercises To Improve Posture and Well-Being by Tom Whittle
B
ad posture in adults often starts in childhood. A 2020 study published in iScience surveyed nearly 600,000 children and found that 65 percent had incorrect posture, with a higher prevalence in girls and kids over 10 years old. Contributing factors may include carrying heavy backpacks, especially when slung over one shoulder, excessive screen time, lack of exercise, stress and being underweight. As we
age, poor posture can lead to pain, soreness and stiffness throughout the body, according to the Hospital for Special Surgery, in New York City. Simple changes can make a big difference. Regularly check that the ears are aligned above the shoulders and the shoulders are over the hips. Stand tall with the shoulders pulled back, chest open and stomach slightly
pulled in. Take frequent breaks from the phone, computer and TV to move around. Rick Richardson, a doctor of physical therapy at the Physical Therapy Center of Excellence, in Bedminster, New Jersey, suggests that daily exercises to loosen tight muscles and strengthen core and back muscles are essential for maintaining body alignment. Here are his recommended stretching and strengthening exercises. As muscles become stronger, incorporate light weights into the strength poses. Always consult a healthcare provider or physical therapist before starting a new exercise program. Tom Whittle is publishing manager of Natural Awakenings.
STRETCHING EXERCISES
While seated, hold the side of the chair with the right hand and grab the top of the head near the ear with the left hand. Gently pull toward the left shoulder, holding for 30 seconds. Keep the neck muscles relaxed throughout the stretch. Switch hands and repeat. Perform two or three sets on each side.
While seated, hold the side of the chair with the right hand and rotate the head 45 degrees from the right arm. Grab the top of the head with the left hand and pull the nose toward the left armpit. Keep the neck muscles relaxed throughout the stretch. Switch hands and repeat. Perform two or three sets on each side.
While lying on the back, tuck the chin toward the spine to create a double chin, holding for three to five seconds. Avoid nodding or lifting the head during the stretch. Perform 10 to 15 reps, two to three times a day.
With toes on the floor and chest on an exercise ball, hold the body straight with arms out to the side in a T-position and palms down. Raise the arms from the floor to shoulder height and hold for one to two seconds. Repeat 10 to 15 times, once or twice daily.
With toes on the floor and chest on an exercise ball, hold the body straight with arms out to the side and elbows bent down. While maintaining bent elbows, raise them to shoulder height and hold for 1 to 2 seconds. Repeat 10 to 15 reps, once or twice daily.
With toes on the floor and chest on an exercise ball, hold the body straight with arms out in a Y-position and thumbs pointing up. Raise the arms overhead and hold for one to two seconds. Repeat 10 to 15 times, once or twice daily.

STRENGTHENING EXERCISES
Unlocking a Pet’s Natural Healing Powers
difference in their recovery. According to Bessent, “A quiet, calm home helps to balance qi and allows the framework for the pet’s body to heal.” A structured, gradually increasing activity plan will help to rebuild strength and balance without overloading healing tissues. Too much activity too soon can set back progress. Creating a serene, predictable home environment also reduces stress and supports better rest and appetite.

Fuel for Recovery
How Dogs and Cats Bounce Back
E
very dog and cat has a remarkable ability to heal, but recovery is about so much more than waiting for a cut to close or symptoms to disappear. True healing involves the whole animal, including the immune system, diet, environment, energy levels and emotional well-being. Their body naturally moves through a series of steps to clear up the damage, rebuild tissues and restore strength. Factors like a pet’s constitution, life force and living conditions can all influence how well—and how quickly—this process unfolds.
The Four Phases of Healing
When a pet gets a cut, scrape or injury, the body immediately jumps into action in a series of overlapping processes: • Hemostasis is the body’s immediate first response to stop the bleeding. • Inflammation kicks in as immune cells rush to the area to clear damaged tissue and respond to potential threats. This stage is essential, even though swelling or redness can look frightening. • Proliferation describes how the body builds new blood vessels, connective tissue and specialized cells to repair the injured area. • Remodeling is when new tissue strengthens and reorganizes, restoring function over time. These stages look different depending on the type of tissue or injury. The skin, liver, muscles, bones and nervous system all heal in their own unique ways, but the common theme is a coordinated effort to restore function when the body has the resources it needs.
Repair and Restoration Times Differ
Cats and dogs go through the same healing steps, but their pace and patterns can differ. A well-known 2004 study in Veterinary Surgery found that feline skin wounds take a little longer to heal, while dog skin closes and grows strong quickly. Species is not the only factor at play. Age, nutrition, injury severity, blood flow, medications and rest will influence how quickly pets bounce back. Cats, for example, may face extra challenges if illness or stress affects their appetite, making proper nutrition especially important during recovery.
Integrating Holistic Techniques
Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) takes a whole-animal view of recovery, in which qi (the body’s vital energy) and xue (or blood, the nourishing substance that feeds tissues) play central roles. A pet’s history, stress levels, chronic conditions and lifestyle can affect their qi and overall constitution. Holistic support often includes tailored nutrition, acupuncture, herbal medicine and appropriate activity. Dr. Chris Bessent, the founder of Medicus Veterinary Diets, The Simple Food Project and Herbsmith, with extensive training in TCVM and certifications in veterinary acupuncture, chiropractic and Chinese herbology, relies on a combination of Eastern and Western approaches to evaluate the whole animal, rather than focusing on a single symptom, thereby providing the best possible environment for healing.
Food is the foundation of healing. Recovery demands extra energy and nutrients to maintain and rebuild tissue. During healing, adequate protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals play critical roles in immune function and tissue repair. The goal is not to overload the system with supplements, but to feed a balanced, species-appropriate and complete diet that matches the pet’s individual needs. According to the World Small Animal Veterinary Association’s global nutrition guidelines, individualized feeding plans are imperative, particularly when a pet is ill or recovering. Bessent’s integrative approach places a great deal of focus on food and nutrition. Through Medicus Veterinary Diets and The Simple Food Project, she has developed whole-food strategies that align nutritional quality with clinical requirements. For pets recovering from illness, surgery or injury, supporting their healing journey means giving the body the right conditions—plenty of rest, calm surroundings and the nutrients needed to do its amazing repair work. Homeopathy vs. Herbal Medicine Two Natural Approaches With Very Different Principles by Athena Eamon
A
stroll down the natural health aisle may reveal bottles of herbal and homeopathic remedies sitting side by side on the shelf. Although they may seem similar, these two therapeutic systems have distinct origins, preparation methods, concentrations, dosage philosophies and ways of working in the body. Herbal medicine, also known as botanical medicine or phytotherapy, harnesses the power of plant parts like leaves, flowers, roots, bark and seeds to prevent and treat illness. The chemical compounds found in the herbs interact with human physiology and can be studied pharmacologically and clinically to understand their effects on biological processes. While some homeopathic remedies are derived from plants used in herbal medicine, others come from minerals, chemicals and
even animal sources. Homeopathy operates on the principle that “like cures like”. It uses highly diluted natural substances to encourage the body’s own healing mechanisms. Before embarking on herbal or homeopathic treatments, it is important to consult all members of a patient’s whole health care team to ensure that potential interactions are managed and the best integrative care is supported. Athena Eamon is a researcher and parent with nearly two decades of experience studying and using homeopathy, integrative health and whole-person wellness. Underwritten by Grato Health, in operation since 1987, dedicated to advancing health and wellness through natural, holistic solutions that support the body’s ability to heal.
