Every other Wednesday morning, members of our staff gather online for a quick update about goings-on across the organization. Each time, we hear about fascinating, impactful efforts that are in some way helping to save open space, care for nature, or connect people to the outdoors. Some are relatively small acts, perhaps advanced by a single member of the staff; others involve staff across multiple departments and millions of dollars. This issue of Natural Lands is a perfect demonstration of the diversity of activity happening day in and day out and of the myriad ways people are contributing to it. The preservation of Crebilly Farm—which had been one of the largest remaining unprotected properties in Chester County—was a tremendous undertaking that took years to bring to completion. In all, thousands of people played a part in this conservation success: the voters of Westtown Township, who chose to create an open space fund to invest in saving Crebilly; the countless volunteers who supported that campaign; elected officials and public servants at the local, county, and state levels; private foundation leaders; more than 700 households that provided contributions; and Natural Lands staff from every department. Meanwhile, at Stoneleigh, a group of dedicated volunteers who call themselves “potstickers” are helping to propagate native plants for the garden and to share with others during the annual Stoneleigh Native Plant Sale. And, at one preserve, a member of our staff is documenting the population of a single species, the eastern box turtle. Then there are those who support our efforts. Much of this issue is devoted to acknowledging the thousands of members and funders who make everything we do possible. The list is long, as you’ll see. That’s because we are committed to thanking every supporter, whatever the size of their contribution or how much time they provide as a volunteer. Every gift and every act by our staff, volunteers, members, and partners makes a meaningful and essential contribution to the advancement of our mission. We are forever grateful for the role you play in Natural Lands, and I hope that you take great satisfaction in knowing that our region is greener and healthier because of you.

Nearly half our staff is dedicated to taking care of our nature preserves and public garden, working to keep nature in balance. As part of Natural Lands’ efforts to manage the impact of deer overpopulation, we installed a deer exclosure fence measuring 800 linear feet at Hildacy Preserve in Media, Delaware County. Located within the floodplain of Crum Creek, the eight-foot-high fence keeps deer out but has openings in the wire that allow other animals to come and go freely. “The concept is to fill this exclosure area with native plants—canopy and understory trees as well as shrubs— to replicate what would occur naturally at Hildacy were it not for the extreme deer pressure,” said Preserve Manager Mike Coll. “I’ll be planting in dense groupings inside the fence with a diverse mix of species. As these plants mature, they’ll provide food, shelter, and breeding habitat for insects, songbirds, and other wildlife. They will also soak up and filter water before it reaches the creek, which is a Delaware River tributary.” n This project was funded in part through a grant from Aqua Essential and the Pennsylvania Environmental Council.

at our preserves annually. The plugs—about 250 pots of them every year—are then planted by Natural Lands’ stewardship staff right where the seeds were gathered. After a decade of efforts to reestablish this unusual species, showy goldenrod is beginning to rebound on our preserves. n

bringing back the barrens. In 2012, Natural Lands added land to ChesLen Preserve that contains a portion of the Unionville Serpentine Barrens. This globally rare habitat has soil that’s high in magnesium and nickel, making the growing conditions hostile to all but a few plants that have adapted to them. Serpentine barrens require periodic disturbance to maintain their unique character. Bordering woodlands encroach as their leaves drop, decompose, and create a rich soil layer over the serpentine bedrock. In order for the barrens to survive, our land stewardship staff use prescribed fire to create disturbance and heavy equipment to scrape away the soil layer to expose the serpentinite stone. Volunteers have then planted barrensspecific plants in the rocky hardscrabble. n

Showy goldenrod (Solidago speciosa) is a prolific nectar and pollen producing perennial that supports bees, wasps, butterflies, moths, and beetles. Eleven species of native bees are specialists in goldenrod and rely on it exclusively. One of the latest plants to bloom, often into November, showy goldenrod is an important food source for late-season pollinators. It is native to Pennsylvania and New Jersey but considered rare. Natural Lands’ preserves are home to about 60 percent of Pennsylvania’s population. In an effort to expand the prevalence of this prairie plant, horticulturists from Mt. Cuba Center in Delaware collect and propagate seed from plants

The 308-acre Crebilly Farm is an oasis of green near the intersection of Street Road and Route 202 in a heavily developed and quickly growing portion of Chester County. Gently rolling fields, rustling leaves in a shady woodland, meandering streams, and birdsong. It’s hard to believe this property was once the subject of heated debate, many late-night township meetings, legal battles, and community petitions. Crebilly is now preserved forever, thanks to a multi-year effort by Natural Lands, community activists, Westtown Township, state and county leaders, generous donors, and committed landowners to prevent the land from becoming another subdivision.

And it took everyone to get this project across the finish line.”

Conservation easements permanently protect 102 acres, and Westtown Township owns the remaining 206 acres. The township is in the early stages of creating a passive-use public park with walking trails through the stunning landscape. Crebilly Farm played a key role in the Battle of Brandywine in 1777, the first major engagement of the British campaign to capture Philadelphia during the Revolutionary War. The property includes about 5,600 feet of three first order tributaries of Radley Run Creek. Radley Run drains directly to Brandywine Creek just one mile from the property. According to Stroud Water Research Center, there is clear scientific evidence that healthy headwaters are essential to the health of stream and river ecosystems. Protecting these headwater streams provides benefits vital to the health and well-being of Pennsylvania’s water resources and its citizens. The streams running through Crebilly Farm will never be disturbed, and the land around the waterways will continue to clean, filter, and slow stormwater entering them. What’s more, protected open spaces like Crebilly Farm offer community members free access to recreation via walking trails. It’s well documented that spending time in nature is good for physical, mental, and emotional well-being. In the case of Crebilly, it’s good for the soul, too. “Iconic landscapes like Crebilly Farm help root us in—even

Indeed, while all land protection projects have many moving parts, the Crebilly conservation was particularly involved. Part of the challenge was the very high peracre cost of the property, which Natural Lands and our partners had to meet to be competitive with developers. “Land in this part of Chester County is at a premium, and Crebilly Farm is no exception,” said Todd Sampsell, vice president of conservation. “Its location along the 202 corridor made the property even more appealing to developers. There just isn’t that much open space left around here, so that pushes up the price.” In early 2022, Westtown Township hired Natural Lands to apply for public funding on their behalf to begin to

There were a lot of sleepless nights.” It took an extraordinary coalition of funders to preserve Crebilly Farm. In addition to the Westtown Township open space fund, which provided about $7.5 million for the property’s preservation and stewardship, Natural Lands raised $16.5 million in public and private grant funding and gifts from individual donors. “Of course,” said Oliver Bass, “the opportunity to save Crebilly forever would not have been possible without the Robinson family, which opened a pathway to conservation in 2022. They were patient as this process

An open space referendum was added to the ballot in November 2022, and Westtown Township residents voted two-to-one in favor. red and blue vote green. Dedicated municipal open space funds are often essential to preserving land, since conservation almost always comes down to dollars. Without funding to purchase land or development rights, organizations like Natural Lands simply can’t compete with developers. That’s why we’ve been working with municipalities across the region to help them establish open space funds. Conservation-minded residents work to get referenda on their local ballots, and then voters decide whether or not to approve small increases in their own taxes.

In 2022, in addition to Westtown Township’s successful referendum, eighty percent of voters in Carbon County, Pennsylvania approved a bond issue to raise $10 million for farmland preservation and natural areas conservation. Just recently, in 2024, both East Whiteland and Uwchlan Townships in Chester County successfully created open space funds, joining the 93 other municipalities in Pennsylvania that have done so. Voters from both sides of the political divide came together for these referenda, demonstrating the bipartisan appeal of open space conservation. n

“Crebilly would not have been preserved had it not been for the many passionate volunteers who’ve worked for years to find a conservation solution,” said Oliver Bass. “They have our respect and gratitude.” For five years, local volunteers worked tirelessly to fight the sale of the property to Toll Brothers. They did so in township meetings, online, and in court. Their persistence raised awareness within the township and beyond, and news media coverage made the David and Goliath story known to every household in the region. Another monumental volunteer effort was the Vote Yes to Save Crebilly coalition, which formed early in 2022 and played a critical role in the passage of Westtown Township’s open space referendum. Working within a tight timeframe before the November election, these dedicated township residents established a website and social media presence, went door to door with ballot

on the road Pull over safely and put on your flashers. Pick the turtle up, holding it securely with both hands. Move the turtle out of the road in the direction it was facing. Wash your hands, as turtles often carry salmonella, chlamydia, and fungal infections.

on a nature walk Don’t disturb or handle the turtle. Take a photo if you wish (and send it to photos@natlands.org if you’re at one of our preserves), but don’t post the location on social media. Take home some happy memories but NEVER take home a turtle.

in your yard or garden Make your property more inviting to turtles by leaving downed trees and leaves whenever possible. If you observe a turtle digging a nest (May through July), keep pets and curious children away from that area. Eggs incubate for up to 80 days.

When Zane Miller was growing up, he got to know a particular eastern box turtle. Every spring for several years in a row, this turtle made her way to his mother’s flower garden to lay her eggs. “She had a chunk out of her shell that made her quite distinct, so we knew it was the same turtle,” said Zane. Perhaps this was where the Natural Lands preserve manager’s fascination with these reptiles began, though he’s quick to point out he’s not a turtle expert. “Really, I like all wild things,” Zane clarifies. “I love studying them to learn more about them.” Zane has spotted quite a few box turtles as he goes about his workdays. The more he encountered, the more he began to wonder how robust their population was. Eastern box turtles are a species of special concern in Pennsylvania. Their numbers have declined steadily throughout their range due to habitat loss and poaching by the illegal pet trade. A naturally low reproduction rate further compounds their challenges. Females may take up to a decade to begin laying eggs, which have a high natural failure rate. Both eggs and hatchlings are vulnerable to predators like skunks, racoons, and foxes. However, eastern box turtles are long lived and produce eggs well into “old age.” There are some reports of individuals living more than 100 years in the wild. Recalling that turtle from his childhood, Zane knew he could identify distinct individuals by their shell and skin markings, which are as unique as human fingerprints. So, he set up a spreadsheet with GPS locations, photos of shell patterns, sex, and guesstimated age based on size. Zane carefully logs every box turtle he comes across during his work. And he shares his findings via the Pennsylvania Amphibian and Reptile Survey, a citizen-science effort to document the state’s herptiles. Turtles, like birds and butterflies, are an indicator species; their presence and abundance can tell us a lot about the overall health of the ecosystem. “It’s important to study indicator species, particularly to understand how our land stewardship activities may impact them,” Zane explained. “Over time, my documentation can help me get a fuller picture of this species. For example, I have noted individuals that have traveled more than a quarter of a mile and several hundred feet of elevation change. That’s quite something considering their average walking pace is about two tenths of a mile per hour.” Box turtles generally stick to a relatively small home range but do travel farther during spring mating and nesting season. Sadly, many turtles are crushed by cars when they attempt to cross roadways built across their habitats. Unlike mammals, turtles are ectothermic; they regulate their body temperatures from their surroundings. When it’s hot outside, they seek shade. When it’s

cold, they find a sunny spot. Though they don’t live in water, box turtles prefer a humid environment. Zane has noticed they’re particularly active during and after a rainstorm. “Natural Lands’ preserves are ideal turtle habitat,” Zane shared. “Few roads traverse these conserved acres and development isn’t a threat. We also leave leaves and fallen trees to decompose, which offer great shelter from the heat of summer and a place for turtles to keep warm in winter. Turtles often return to the same site each winter, when they enter a state called brumation, which is similar to hibernation. It’s yet another compelling reason for leaving dead trees to decompose. I’ve seen quite a few box turtles emerging from under dead trees where they overwintered.” In late summer, after a few days of rain, a turtle appeared by Zane’s office door and stayed there. At first, he was delighted, but Zane became worried

after the third day and when he noticed one of the turtle’s eyes was closed. He transported the animal to Aark Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center in Chalfont, PA. The clinic staff there diagnosed the turtle with conjunctivitis, which was hampering the animal’s ability to forage. They admitted the turtle to administer antibiotics and help it put on some much-needed weight. Once it’s healthy again, they’ll release it exactly where Zane found it: at his office door. The loss of even just one turtle to a species faced with so many challenges is significant. Fortunately for this lucky reptile, and the many others that call the preserve home, Zane Miller is keeping a watchful eye out. “It doesn’t have to just be me,” said Zane. “If we all create safe habitat in natural areas in our yards and gardens and support conservation efforts around the region, together, we can be part of the solution.” n

Some scientists predict they’ll experience increases in nest failures, skewed sex ratios, and disease outbreaks. Others think the species may benefit from a warming climate with higher winter survival rates and longer seasons to reproduce, particularly in the northern parts of their range.

to purchase them individually and transfer Vineland ownership to the Pennsylvania Game Commission so they will be conserved in perpetuity and managed to balance the needs of wildlife and visitors. The properties’ forests provide important food, cover, and nesting habitat for several species of migratory P songbirds. These species require unbroken woodlands; Delaware Bay their populations are very sensitive to forest fragmentation by roads or other development. By adding these natural areas to already conserved and managed lands, we’ve ensured they’ll never be developed and that the songbirds—along with other wildlife and beneficial insects—will always have a home.

Over the past several years, landowner Michael Kaczenski has acquired land with the intent of preserving it. Thorough the conservation easement with Natural Lands, he’s done just that. The 252-acre forested property includes about 7,830 feet of streams that flow to the Lehigh River. Native tree species, including Eastern hemlock and white pine, create a dense canopy overhead. Understory trees like red maple, hawthorn, American beech, and black cherry reach for the sunlight. The shrub layer includes serviceberry, lowbush and highbush blueberry, rhododendron, and steeplebush. The forest floor is thick with ferns and other native perennials. “The land is remarkably free of invasive plant species,” said Kate Raman, conservation project manager. “It’s rich habitat for wildlife, including fisher, mink, porcupine, river otter, and flying squirrel, not to mention the almost 100 species of birds that rely on the land for food, shelter, and breeding.”

We reached a milestone in June of 2023 when Natural Lands placed conservation easements on about a third of the land. In December 2024, we crossed the project finish line when, thanks to myriad funding partners and individual Save Crebilly Campaign donors, Westtown Township acquired the remaining 206 acres. That land is slated to become a passive-use park with walking trails through the stunning landscape. “We are extremely thankful to Natural Lands, and join them in our heartfelt gratitude for everyone, known and unknown, who has generously contributed their creativity, spirit, time, talent, and financial resources to make this momentous occasion possible,” David and Laurie Robinson said. “We are humbled by the incredible community support in fulfilling this extraordinary conservation and preservation effort.”

14.4 acres Silver Spring Township Key Partner: Silver Spring Township Now protected in perpetuity with a conservation easement, Shillelagh Farm is made up of woodlands, farm fields, and floodplain, and includes about 1,050 feet of Hogestown Run. The land adjacent to the stream— which the landowner, Starr Offenger, has committed to leaving as a vegetated buffer—helps absorb and filter floodwaters during storms. The property is in an area that, after nearly three centuries of agricultural use, has experienced heavy development. As a result, Shillelagh Farm is one of few remaining historical farmsteads in this part of Silver Spring Township. “I could never in good conscience let this sacred land become another car lot or warehouse, which now surround our boundaries,” said landowner Starr Offenger. “It is a little piece of paradise for the wildlife to enjoy. It is indeed very calming to look out over the meadow and enjoy the beauty. I am glad for the opportunity to preserve!”

The land is heavily wooded with native deciduous species. Forests like this are incredibly important for the health and well-being of us all. They clean the air we breathe, filter the water we drink, absorb and slow stormwater, store carbon, and shelter wildlife including insects, which are the foundation of the web of life. “Natural Lands played a vital role in bringing this important tract to the Game Commission,” said Tim Haydt, Pennsylvania Game Commission’s bureau director for habitat management. “Protecting this property from development will add to the biological, recreational, and scenic values associated with the network of lands comprising State Game Land No. 46. Natural Lands has proven to be an invaluable partner, and we look forward to future collaborations.” n

Despite its name, Ridge Farm is almost completely wooded. The dense forest provides essential habitat for songbirds and other wildlife. It also helps to filter rainwater before it flows into the more than 7,000 feet of Standing Stone Creek that, along with Geiser Run tributary, meanders through the property. The creek is classified by the PA Department of Environmental Protection as a high-quality, cold-water stream. These waterways and the land surrounding them are part of the Juniata River Watershed, water from which leads into the Susquehanna River and then onto the Chesapeake Bay. The conservation easement on the 667-acre property is the culmination of more than two years of working with the landowners and our partners, ClearWater Conservancy and Open Space Institute. “ClearWater Conservancy was excited to collaborate with Natural Lands and the Wojdylak family to preserve this beautiful property in perpetuity,” said Elizabeth Crisfield, executive director of ClearWater Conservancy. “Maintaining habitat connectivity through forested ridgelines is an important contribution to climate resilience in central Pennsylvania, facilitating natural

One seed at a time, these volunteers are growing plants to increase the biodiversity both at Stoneleigh and yards, gardens, and patio planters across the region.

It’s Wednesday and a group of five volunteers gather in Stoneleigh’s greenhouse around a table piled high: bags of potting soil, plastic plant pots of varying sizes, trowels and tweezers, seedlings in tiny pots, and glassine bags filled with seeds of various kinds. The conversation is lively as they work methodically, transferring the seedlings from their starter pots to larger containers—a process known as “up-potting”—and placing seeds in grow trays filled with soil.

This tightknit group of volunteers used the old Stoneleigh greenhouse as their workspace for several years, which was cramped quarters. “You get to know each other well when you work in such a small space together,” Lin shared. “We have such camaraderie and regularly get together socially outside of our volunteer work.” Built in 1935, Stoneleigh’s estate greenhouse was originally designed for vegetables and houseplants. Though this building served the garden well, Stoneleigh’s ongoing evolution as a public garden requires new infrastructure. In late 2024, the old greenhouse was demolished to make way for a new one that will improve energy efficiency, increase production capacity, and host new programs. The greenhouse is slated to be completed later this summer, and the Potstickers can’t wait to ramp up their work. Thanks in part to the Potstickers, the Plant Sale offerings have really grown over the years; in 2025, there were more than 280 different varieties for sale. Said Lin, “Stoneleigh has given so much to me and others who visit. Volunteering is my way of giving back. These little seedlings are my babies. It’s rewarding to see them grow. As a Stoneleigh volunteer, I’ve grown, too.” n

These are the Stoneleigh Potstickers, a humorous name they gave themselves as most of their work is to stick seeds or small plants in pots. When the plants get bigger, they stick them in larger pots, repeating this process until the plants are large enough to install outdoors or be sold at the annual Stoneleigh Native Plant Sale. Though the work might sound tedious and monotonous, the Potstickers look forward to their Wednesday gatherings, which occur year-round. “In the colder months, we spend time cleaning seeds,” explains Lin Hall, who proudly notes she was the original Potsticker. Stoneleigh’s Director, Ethan Kauffman, wild-collects seed from Natural Lands’ preserves and other places. The volunteers take apart the dried seed heads, separating the seeds from the chaff, sometimes using tweezers and magnifying lenses. Like the other Potstickers, Lin fell in love with Stoneleigh after a visit some years ago. Her first volunteer role was as a Stoneleigh Ambassador, greeting guests when they arrive and helping orient them to the garden. “I’m big on education,” Lin shared. “As an Ambassador, I get to talk to people about the importance of native plants. But what better way to experience the beauty and benefit of natives than to grow some in your own yard? So many of the plants we pot up and care for are sold at the Plant Sale, which brings me great joy. I have some physical limitations, but as a Potsticker I can still get my hands in the dirt.” Fellow volunteer Martha Van Artsdalen agreed. A former writer and garden columnist, Martha loves that she can brush up on her Latin species names as she works. “We get to keep learning—from each other and the Stoneleigh staff. It’s such a positive experience.” Martha particularly enjoys opening the brown paper lunch bags that Ethan uses to collect the wild-collected seed heads. “Cleaning the seeds is hard work but opening those bags with all those different species… it’s like Christmas morning!”
