INTRAVENOUS OZONE THERAPY

Hello June!

When June hits, summer has begun, even though it’s not officially here yet. June signifies kids home for the summer and vacation planning. For some, the stress of such planning goes against what summer is really about: de-stressing. The angst is real.

Planning a trip for everyone’s tastes is one matter. There are so many options: sitting by a beach, adventure hikes, urban or rural, international or domestic… but the key takeaway is to remember that while planning is necessary, planning to do absolutely nothing is also essential. Incorporate time to chill, with no obligations. Both body and mind need this downtime without feeling hurried. Once you incorporate what you can, you’ll find the balance that everyone seeks.

Time outside is one of summer’s best gifts, and in order to keep it carefree and uninterrupted on adventure walks through the forest, take a peek at our cover story, “New Hope for Lyme Disease.” Dr. Howard Robins provides important tips on protecting ourselves from ticks and what to look for if we are bit by one or start having Lyme disease symptoms. He also explains that there is hope with the addition of Ozone Therapy, which “helps the immune system fight off the disease” when the standard treatments are not enough. Prevention and vigilance are key to enjoying a summer free of issues.

And we can’t forget about Dad: the man, the myth, the legend. In our house, Michael is the rock, putting family first without complaint. He prioritizes us over all else. While we don’t need a special holiday to tell him how much we love and appreciate him, it’s nice to be able to carve out one day a year that focuses exclusively on him. Other than his birthday, we love to give him his due. Whether it’s taking him out to dinner, giving him heartfelt cards or taking a family fun trip together on a beach or through the woods, his day kicks off summer.

So go ahead and welcome in June, it doesn’t ask or expect too much from us, just that we notice its arrival, the acceleration of summer, the celebration of Dad and the quiet care that keeps interruptions at bay, just showing up and enjoying what’s ahead.

& Michael

Beyond Carrots: Nutrition and Supplementation for Eye Health

As rates of dry eye disease, digital eye strain, macular degeneration and glaucoma continue to rise, research highlights the important role of nutrition in protecting long-term vision and brain health. While a healthy diet rich in leafy greens, colorful vegetables and fruits, omega-3 fats and antioxidants remains foundational, targeted eye supplementation may help fill nutritional gaps to support metabolic demands of the retina and optic nerve.

Certain nutrients have been studied for their roles in eye health, including lutein and zeaxanthin for macular support, omega-3 fatty acids for ocular surface health and antioxidants for oxidative stress associated with aging eyes. Emerging research reveals underlying connections between mitochondrial dysfunction and inflammation to vision and brain health.

To address ocular nutrition, double board-certified neuro-ophthalmologist and integrative eye specialist Dr. Rani (Rudrani) Banik, MD, has joined forces with OpticaMD to introduce a new line of science-based nutritional supplements that support multiple aspects of eye and neurologic wellness.

The OpticaMD collection includes Daily Vision, a comprehensive ocular nutrition support featuring macular carotenoids, B vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and botanicals; Eye Omega, an omega fatty acid blend to support dry eye and retinal health; Brain Health to support cognitive and neurologic function; Neuro Tension, to support headaches, sleep and stress resilience.

“These formulations were developed to support the connection between eye health, brain health and healthy aging,” says Banik.

Celebrity Psychic Deborah Graham; Summer Solstice Tips

June 21 marks the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year and a powerful turning point associated with abundance, renewal and personal growth. This seasonal midpoint invites reflection and offers an opportunity to realign with intentions.

Celebrity psychic Deborah Graham, known for her work on The Psychic Matchmaker and her podcast The Psychic Connection, shares simple ways to harness this heightened energy and reconnect with oneself.

Start by grounding. Spend time outdoors, feel the touch of the sun, and reconnect with the earth to stabilize the body’s energy. The solstice morning is also an ideal time for manifestation. Reflect on what there is to be grateful for, then clearly visualize what is desired moving forward.

Many people use this time to cleanse and recharge crystals by placing them in sunlight, allowing them to absorb and redirect fresh energy. Incorporating meditation, especially outdoors, can further align the mind and body, helping to find clarity and balance during times of transition.

“The solstice also symbolizes renewal. Embrace it as a reset, a moment to release what no longer serves you and step into a new cycle with intention,” says Graham. “Traditionally, this time of year is connected to fertility and growth, making it meaningful for those considering expanding their families.”

Finally, celebrate the season’s abundance. Enjoy fresh, vibrant foods like berries, corn and tomatoes as a reminder of nature’s richness and life’s ongoing cycles.

For more information about Graham or to book a reading in person or over the phone, call 561-584-0709 or visit PsychicDeborahGraham.com. See ad, page 10.

Most Vision Loss Is Preventable

The Eye Summit 2026 brought together more than 20 global experts in ophthalmology, optometry, neurology, functional medicine and integrative health for a fiveday virtual event focused on preventing vision loss and optimizing long-term eye and brain health.

A major theme throughout the Summit was that much of vision loss is preventable or treatable when identified early. Experts emphasized the importance of nutrition, lifestyle medicine, reducing inflammation and early detection in preserving eyesight and cognitive function as we age.

Hosted by neuro-ophthalmologist Dr. Rani (Rudrani) Banik, MD, during Healthy Vision Month, the Summit attracted over 20,000 participants from 99 countries. Sessions featured evidence-based discussions on macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, dry eye disease, migraine, concussion-related vision problems, the gut-eye axis, acupuncture and emerging therapies such as photobiomodulation and stem cell therapies.

“The goal of The Eye Summit is to empower people with practical, science-based strategies they can apply in everyday life to protect their precious vision for life,” says Banik.

Although the live event has concluded, individuals can still register to access Day 1 presentations free of charge and learn foundational strategies for protecting vision and supporting lifelong eye health.

Discounts on Medical Intuitive Sessions

Ann Koronowski, owner of Ann Energy Healer, recently completed certification as a Medical Intuitive. Through July 31, she is offering a 25 percent discount on Medical Intuitive sessions.

As a Medical Intuitive, Koronowski uses a variety of techniques to discover subconscious energetic or emotional blockages that may be causing chronic physical or emotional pain. She finds the original root cause of the issue, either in this lifetime or another lifetime, then works with her client to release that energy or emotion. “Sometimes there is immediate relief; however, the root cause often goes much deeper and may take several sessions to uncover completely,” she says.

Physical pain is the body’s way of getting attention. “Consistent negative or suppressed emotions can be the result of physical pain and disease but, more often, these emotions are the cause,” says Koronowski. “If you are experiencing chronic pain, a persistent ailment, or feel that your emotional well-being is suffering, a Medical Intuitive package may be a good fit for you.”

Cost: One Medical Intuitive session, $187 (regularly $249); four-session package, $747 (regularly $996). To receive this exclusive  Natural Awakenings discount, email AnnEnergyHealer@gmail. com. For more information, visit AnnEnergyHealer.com. See listing, page 29.

Curcumin’s Potential to Clear Cataracts

A 2025 systematic review in the European Journal for Integrative Medicine explored whether curcumin, a natural antioxidant and the main compound in turmeric, could help prevent or treat cataracts. A leading cause of blindness, cataracts occur when the eye’s lens becomes cloudy, often because of damage from oxidative stress.

The researchers evaluated the results of 17 studies conducted on animals (in vivo), labgrown cells (in vitro), or both. All the studies showed that curcumin helped prevent cataracts from forming or slowed their progress by reducing damage to fats in cells and by boosting antioxidant enzymes that protect the eye.

While curcumin seems promising, no human clinical trials have been conducted yet because it does not dissolve well in water, making it difficult for the body to absorb efficiently through the digestive system. The scientists believe that making curcumin easier to absorb will be the key to determining if it can be used to treat cataracts.

Guiding People to Access Higher Knowledge

As a professional musician with 20 years of performance experience, Jen Viviant never dreamed of becoming a hypnotist. But then she discovered Dolores Cannon. Viviant saw the breadth and quality of Cannon's work as a hypnotherapist and founder of Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique (QHHT) and it re-ignited another dream: to help others heal themselves. Viviant dedicated herself to this craft and became a Level 3 QHHT Practitioner, the highest attainable marker of training and experience. She was inspired by Cannon’s work with QHHT that was helping people in fundamental, lasting ways. Now, Viviant’s own expertise is guiding people from all over the world to access their higher knowledge and gain profound clarity on personal timelines.

QHHT is a 6-hour deep dive, setting it apart from most hypnosis. “Spending a day in a dedicated space allows one to fully access all your Higher Self wants you to know and it has a beautiful, holistic way of finding the root of any issues, physical, emotional or otherwise,” says Viviant. “You become empowered to transcend subconscious blocks and move forward freely.”

With an easy-going style, Viviant eases clients into what is often unfamiliar territory. This sacred experience is enveloped in love and higher energetic frequencies that allow the greatest potential for connecting to higher knowing. Viviant assures clients that there is no wrong way to experience a QHHT session, which relaxes them and makes it even easier to lock in with their Higher Self.

After a session, clients report feeling calmer, more grounded and knowing they are guided by a higher power with which they are inherently connected. They find confirmation or validation of their feelings and discover more about themselves. A recording of the session is provided for future review.

“I guide my clients through whatever their higher selves are wanting to share with them, whether it's a past life or something else,” says Viviant. “Through a connection with their Higher Self, they uncover valuable information and answers to their questions.”

Sustainable Men’s Fashion

The eco-conscious gentleman seeks to conserve resources, reduce waste and break free from consumerism. When building his wardrobe, he favors quality over quantity, rejecting fast fashion in favor of well-made garments, sustainable fabrics and timeless designs.

Eco-Friendly Fabrics

Synthetic materials like polyester, nylon and acrylic are derived from fossil fuels, take centuries to biodegrade and release harmful microplastics during washing.

They have no place in an evolved wardrobe. Better fabrics come from renewable sources grown without chemicals or pesticides, such as organic cotton, linen, hemp, bamboo and responsibly sourced merino wool.

Look for the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification, which ensures environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing, including crop rotation for soil health, a prioritization of rainwater over irrigation and fair wages for workers. This certification applies to all textiles made from at least 70 percent non-GMO certified organic natural fibers.

To replace leather—one of the least sustainable materials—innovative plant-based alternatives are emerging, such as Piñatex from pineapple leaves and wood pulp or mycelium-based fabrics made from mushrooms. Recycled polyester (rPET) from melted plastic bottles spun into yarn helps reduce landfill waste. Approximately nine bottles are needed to make one T-shirt.

TENCEL Lyocell, made with wood from responsibly managed forests, is produced with 50 percent lower carbon emissions and water consumption than similar fabrics.

Herbs are Nature’s Medicine

Male Vitality Through Self Care

The biggest health problems for men are generally the result of lack of health care monitoring earlier in life. For example, the progression of heart disease: "If you don't get your cholesterol checked when it's going high at age 20, and if you don't get your blood pressure checked when it's going high at age 30, maybe your blood sugar's getting a little high when you're 40, what do you think is going to happen when you're 50?" Of the top 10 causes of male deaths, only one is male organ specific: prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer found in men, besides skin cancer. Enlarged prostate is universally considered a result of the ageing process in men. Many men over 40, and more than half of men over 60, are affected. Prostate problems are easily treatable if found in early stages, which is why it’s important to stay ahead of the game and get an annual check-up that includes prostate screening.

With the guidance of a certified herbalist, symptomatic relief can be found for enlarged, inflamed and/or general prostate problems. Herbs used may include parsley, saw palmetto berries, cornsilk, buchu leaves, cayenne, kelp and pumpkin seeds.

Cornsilk, parsley and buchu leaves will promote urination, soothe irritated tissues and provide marked urinary relief. Saw palmetto has a more direct influence on the enlarged prostate, reducing inflammation, pain and that dull aching throb. Saw palmetto extract helps treat benign prostate enlargement and prostatitis, whereas the whole berries have a gentler effect. A gentle diuretic tea can be used to flush out infectious bacteria in cases of prostate infection.

If any of these conditions present, see your doctor immediately. Long-term use of these formulas is not suggested.

Gain the knowledge and tools to Heal Thyself. Join our next cycle of the master herb course launching in June to gain the knowledge and skills to write your own health narrative, holistically, using the natural healing power of herbs, essential oils and crystals.

New Hope for Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is one  of the most misunderstood and potentially life-taking illnesses in the United States. It is caused by the bacterium  Borrelia burgdorferi, which can be transmitted through the bite of an infected black-legged tick (deer tick). If diagnosed and treated early, many patients recover. However, delayed or missed diagnosis can allow Lyme disease to become a chronic, debilitating illness that affects the neurological, cardiac and immune systems and can even result in death.

Lyme is most commonly found in children, aged 3-14, with adults over 50 being the next most affected group. Although anyone at any age, along with outdoor pets, can be infected.

The Lyme Challenge

Lyme disease was named after Lyme, Connecticut, where it was first identified,

but infected ticks are now found across the U.S. The highest concentrations are in the Northeast, including Long Island. The CDC has estimated that 476,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed and treated for Lyme disease each year. Scientists estimate that millions more may suffer from post-treatment or untreated Lyme disease symptoms.

One of the greatest challenges with Lyme is accurate diagnosis. A positive test confirms infection, but a negative test does not necessarily mean there is no Lyme in the body. Lyme also mimics other illnesses. Early symptoms often resemble the flu. As the disease progresses, a very wide range of symptoms are possible, including fatigue, fever, rash, facial paralysis, irregular heartbeat or joint pain. If the disease has already progressed into later stages, it is frequently mistaken for other conditions such as arthritis,

Erik Karits /Pexels.com

heart disease, neurological issues or mental health disorders. Even patients who appear symptom-free after treatment should remain vigilant, as relapses can occur.

Lyme Treatments

Standard treatment for Lyme is antibiotics. Some practitioners argue this is not sufficient, particularly in late-stage cases. Alternative treatments, such as intravenous Ozone Therapy, are gaining in popularity. Ozone Therapy can be used on its own or in conjunction with pharmaceuticals, which makes it an attractive adjunct treatment.

Research shows that Ozone Therapy improves the body’s intake and use of oxygen and activates the immune system to fight off disease. In addition, it improves blood flow and increases anti-inflammatory effects and it can destroy all the Lyme co-infections.

Dr. Howard Robins, a leader in bio-oxidative therapies, participated in research at Tufts University School of Medicine, with funding support from the Global Lyme Alliance, to show how Ozone Therapy works to combat Lyme. Robins has successfully used intravenous Ozone Therapy in his New York clinic for 35 years, administering more than 430,000 treatments proving its benefits and safety.

Prevention is Key

While ticks are typically associated with wooded areas, they can be carried by the wind to any place outdoors. In addition, a tick bite is not always detected if the tick falls off and does not cause a rash. If a rash appears, it may be missed. Avoiding ticks is critical. Wear long sleeves, light-colored clothing, use insect repellent and perform regular tick checks—even in unexpected

places like Long Island beaches or the backyard.

After being outdoors near ticks, bathe or shower (preferably within 2 hours) to wash off and find ticks more easily. Conduct a full-body tick check using a hand-held or full-length mirror to view all parts of the body (parents should check children thoroughly, especially in the hair). Examine gear and pets. Tumble dry clothes on high heat for 10 minutes to kill ticks on clothing.

Understanding Testosterone

Supporting Natural Production and Hormonal Balance

Testosterone plays a critical role in energy, muscle mass, mood, metabolism, libido and overall vitality for both men and women. Yet many people who are experiencing fatigue, weight gain, brain fog or reduced performance may not realize that hormone imbalance could be contributing to their symptoms.

Functional medicine practitioners look beyond simply replacing hormones and seek to understand what is causing testosterone levels to be low.

Natural testosterone production depends on several foundational factors. These include quality sleep, resistance training, stress management, proper nutrition, healthy body composition, balanced blood

sugar and avoidance of alcohol. Chronic stress and elevated cortisol can suppress hormone production, while poor sleep directly lowers testosterone levels and the body’s ability to recover.

Targeted nutritional support may also help optimize hormone pathways. Certain nutrients and botanical compounds including zinc, magnesium, vitamin D, ashwagandha and DHEA precursors can support the body’s natural hormone production when used appropriately and under professional guidance.

However, testosterone is only part of the hormone story. Hormones work in balance, and one of the most overlooked issues is conversion of testosterone into estrogen.

Testosterone naturally converts to estrogen through an enzyme called aromatase. When this conversion becomes excessive, patients may experience symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, mood changes, decreased libido, water retention or difficulty building muscle despite “normal” testosterone levels.

The balance of hormones is just one reason that functional medicine practitioners rely on comprehensive testing. Evaluating total testosterone alone is often insufficient. Functional hormone assessment may include free testosterone, estrogen markers, SHBG, DHEA, cortisol, insulin resistance, inflammatory markers and lifestyle factors that influence hormone metabolism.

Pollack Wellness takes an individualized approach to help patients restore optimal hormone balance naturally, whenever possible, while addressing the root causes behind hormonal dysfunction. The goal is not simply a higher testosterone level—it is balanced, healthy hormone function that supports long-term wellness, performance and healthy aging.

Dr. David L. Pollack is the founder of Pollack Wellness, located at 66 Commack Rd., #204, Commack, NY. For appointments or information, call 631-462-0801 or visit PollackWellness.com. See ad, page 5.

Another Leap Forward in Dental Healing: ADVANCED

REGENERATIVE

MEDICINE MEETS BEAUTY, HARMONY AND NATURAL ELEGANCE

Facial aesthetics is evolving. Today’s sophisticated facial rejuvenation is not about looking artificial, frozen or overfilled—it’s about refinement, harmony, confidence, vitality and helping patients look naturally youthful and refreshed.

An exciting development in facial aesthetics is combining advanced regenerative techniques with elite cosmetic enhancement to support beauty and youthfulness along with tissue rejuvenation and longterm facial vitality.

At Integrative Dental Specialists, Dr. Jeffrey Etess and the aesthetic nursing team utilize a facial aesthetic approach that blends advanced injectable therapies, regenerative biologics, precision facial analysis and artistic enhancement to create elegant, natural results tailored to each patient.

Protocols can combine premium dermal fillers, neuromodulators, platelet rich fibrin therapy, microneedling, skin rejuvenation procedures, collagen stimulation therapies and emerging regenerative technologies such as exosomes. The result is a more comprehensive and biologically supportive approach to facial beauty and aging.

Premium facial fillers can restore youthful contours, soften folds, enhance lip architecture, support the cheeks and jawline, improve facial balance and create subtle

structural harmony. When performed conservatively and artistically, modern filler therapy is not obvious or exaggerated.

Neuromodulators are effective tools for softening wrinkles created by facial movements. Beyond reducing lines, they can create a smoother, more refreshed appearance while preserving natural expression and facial character.

Regenerative medicine brings in platelet rich fibrin (PRF) as a biologically advanced natural rejuvenation therapy. Derived from the patient’s own blood, PRF contains concentrated platelets, fibrin scaffolding, leukocytes and powerful growth factors that stimulate collagen production, angiogenesis, tissue repair and cellular regeneration. Used beneath the eyes, throughout the midface, around the mouth and in areas where skin quality, elasticity or volume has declined, regenerative therapies improve the quality and vitality of the tissue.

Microneedling combined with PRF further enhances this regenerative process by stimulating collagen induction and cellular turnover. Patients notice improvements in texture, fine lines, crepey skin, acne scarring, enlarged pores, skin tone and overall radiance.

Another emerging regenerative technique involves exosome therapies, which are being explored to enhance tissue healing, improve skin rejuvenation, support collagen synthesis and accelerate post procedural recovery. While the science is evolving, many experts believe exosome-based therapies may be the next breakthrough in nonsurgical facial rejuvenation.

Few healthcare professionals possess the type of advanced understanding of facial anatomy, musculature, symmetry, occlusion, soft tissue dynamics and precision injection techniques as do highly trained dentists like Dr. Jeffrey Etess and his aesthetic nursing team.

Dentists work within the oral and maxillofacial region daily, performing delicate procedures involving nerves, vascular anatomy, mus-

culature and intricate facial structures. This extensive anatomical knowledge, combined with an artistic understanding of facial aesthetics such as proportion, symmetry, structure and tissue behavior, creates a uniquely qualified perspective for facial rejuvenation that creates natural beauty and harmony.

Dr. Jeffrey Etess and the aesthetic nursing team at Integrative Dental Specialists combine advanced regenerative therapies, precision injectable techniques, biologic principles and artistic facial analysis to create personalized treatment plans designed to support graceful aging, facial harmony and naturally refined rejuvenation so that patients become the most confident and refreshed version of themselves.

The Rise of the Men’s Wellness Retreat

Why More Men Are Choosing Restoration Over Recovery Days

For years, men’s vacations often followed the same formula: packed schedules, late nights, too much food and alcohol, very little sleep and returning home more exhausted than when they left. Somewhere along the line, “getting away” started to resemble a scene from The Hangover

But something is shifting.

More men are now choosing travel experiences that make them feel more restored instead of depleted. Wellness-focused retreats built around movement, nature, recovery and meaningful connection are growing

Tahir Boyacı/Pexels.com

rapidly as men search for something deeper than entertainment.

And, contrary to stereotype, these retreats are rarely about sitting silently on a yoga mat for seven days straight.

Today’s men’s wellness retreats are often active and grounded. Think hiking, surfing, strength training, cold plunges, breathwork, meditation, clean food and conversations that go beyond work stress or surface-level small talk. Some are rugged and outdoorsy. Others lean to luxury. But most share a common purpose: helping men slow down long enough to reconnect with themselves.

The main reason: Many men are tired in ways they rarely talk about; not just physically tired, but mentally overloaded, emotionally stretched thin and constantly performing.

According to a national survey conducted by the Cleveland Clinic, many men report feeling pressure to appear mentally strong even when struggling internally. Nearly half admitted they are more stressed than they let on about it to the people around them.

That pressure adds up.

For many men, wellness retreats work precisely because they do not force vulnerability. Instead, connection happens naturally through shared experiences. A conversation during a long hike feels easier than sitting face-to-face at a bar. Sitting around a fire after a day outdoors often opens the door to honesty in ways traditional vacations rarely do.

Movement lowers defenses.

Nature helps, too. Research continues to show that time outdoors can reduce stress, improve mood and support mental clarity. Removing constant notifications, deadlines and noise allow the nervous system to settle down in ways many people do not realize they need until they finally experience stillness.

Ironically, many men also relax better when there is structure involved. Wellness retreats provide activity with intention—giving

men something to do while quietly helping them unplug, breathe deeper and reset.

Some men do not realize how exhausted they are until they spend a full day somewhere during which no one expects anything from them.

Perhaps that is why wellness travel continues to grow. The nonprofit Global Wellness Institute reports that more travelers are prioritizing experiences that support mental, physical and emotional well-being rather than simply offering distraction.

For many men, the real luxury is no longer excess.

It is finally feeling calm

The Reset We’re Really Craving

Two Intentional Ways to Travel for Detox, Nourishment and Renewal

Detox-supportive travel no longer fits into a single category. Today, it exists along a spectrum—from wellnessforward hotels that weave nourishment and restorative therapies into a flexible stay to guided retreat programs that offer a more structured experience. Both approaches share the same intention: supporting the body through mindful food, therapeutic care and environments designed to restore balance.

The difference lies not in effectiveness, but in how much structure a traveler wants.

The Foundation:

Food as Daily Medicine

Whether staying at a wellness-focused hotel or participating in a retreat, food remains the cornerstone of detox-supportive travel. Meals are typically organic, seasonal and minimally processed, designed to ease digestive load while supplying essential nutrients.

Guests often encounter vegetable-forward dishes, mineral-rich broths, fresh juices or gut-supportive meals prepared simply and eaten slowly. Without distraction or excess, food becomes informational—revealing how ingredients affect digestion, energy and mental clarity.

For many travelers, this shift alone brings noticeable changes: less bloating, steadier energy throughout the day and a renewed connection to hunger and fullness cues.

Path One: Wellness-Forward Hotels & Destinations

Flexibility, Autonomy and À La Carte Support

Wellness-forward hotels allow travelers to opt into detox-supportive practices while maintaining the freedom of traditional travel. These properties integrate nourishment and therapeutic care without requiring adherence to a fixed schedule or program.

Guests may choose from spa offerings such as infrared sauna, hydrotherapy, lymphatic drainage, abdominal massage or restorative bodywork, alongside menus designed to support digestion and metabolic balance. Time in nature, quiet spaces and thoughtful design further support nervous system regulation.

This approach appeals to travelers who value autonomy—those who want wellness woven into their stay, not structured around it.

Regions where this style of travel thrives include:

Italy and the Mediterranean, where slow meals, daily walking and simple cuisine naturally support digestive health

Mexico and Costa Rica, offering naturecentered properties with cleansing menus and spa circuits

North America, particularly California, Arizona and the Northeast, where hotels increasingly incorporate seasonal detox offerings and integrative spa services.

Path Two: Guided Detox & FoodFocused Retreats

Structure, Education and Support

Detox retreats offer a more guided experience. Meals, therapies and daily rhythms are curated within a defined schedule, often led by functional medicine practitioners, naturopaths, integrative nutritionists or traditional healing professionals.

In addition to food and spa therapies, retreats frequently include educational components—such as cooking demonstrations, nutrition talks or lifestyle workshops—designed to deepen understanding and support long-term integration.

For travelers who find clarity and comfort in structure, retreats provide containment, accountability and depth—without requiring ongoing decision-making.

Choosing the Right Path

Neither option is inherently better. The most supportive experience is the one that aligns with a traveler’s personality, health needs

and season of life. Some seek flexibility and exploration; others benefit from guidance and defined rhythms. Both paths can lead to meaningful, lasting insight.

In the end, detox-supportive travel isn’t defined by where one stays—but by how intentionally food, rest and care are woven into the journey. When those elements are in place, travel becomes not just restorative, but informative— offering clarity that continues long after the return home.

Self-care isn’t a luxury—it’s the foundation of a healthy, resilient life. When we choose travel experiences that nourish the body and calm the nervous system, we’re not escaping our lives; we’re learning how to care for ourselves more intentionally within them.

Shae Marcus, the founder of The 11:11 Experience, believes intentional pauses and meaningful travel remind us who we are when life slows, offering clarity, connection and space to begin again. For more information, visit The1111Experience.com.

Hope, Healing & Wellness for

Finding Meaning and Hope in Troubled Times

A Conversation With Jeffrey Rubin

Jeffrey Rubin, Ph.D., is a psychoanalyst and a pioneering expert in meditative psychotherapy, which integrates Western psychotherapeutic modalities with Eastern meditative traditions. In practice since 1978, he treats patients in New York City and North Salem, New York. Rubin is an international lecturer and keynote speaker, as well as a faculty member at The American Institute of Psychoanalysis, The Object Relations Institute and the C.G. Jung Institute of New York. An author of eight books and numerous articles, his latest works include Meditative Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis: Pathways to Healing and Transformation and Psychotherapy Case Studies: Escaping the Prison You Didn’t Know You Were In.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of psychotherapy?

In most schools of Western psychotherapy, the emphasis is on identifying and addressing what is wrong with people. In my book The Good Life I explain that we need a double focus—not just looking at what challenges us, but also exploring our untapped potential.

Psychotherapy is a search for meaning and self-awareness, as well as an inquiry into relationships as a vehicle for self-transformation. These are its strengths. In therapy, relationships tend to be carefully described and understood, looking into the complexities and obstacles.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of meditation?

Even if you practice with 100 people, meditation offers less insight into relationships compared to psychotherapy. It doesn’t focus on meaning. A woman once told me in therapy, “I don’t want to travel to Tibet to learn about Buddhism,” then paused, “I said ‘don’t’—is that a Freudian slip? Maybe I’m going to Tibet only because my boyfriend wants to go.” A meditation teacher would dismiss her slip as a glitch, while a psychotherapist might see it as symptomatic. As an adult, you have to learn to distinguish between symptoms and glitches, and one of the dangers of meditation is that you often stay on the surface of things.

As for strengths, meditation teaches you to greet the present moment freshly with minimal biases, minimal expectations, maximal openness and the innocence of a child. Meditation also reduces selfcriticism, and fosters self-compassion and acceptance.

What is meditative psychotherapy?

It is what I call the marriage of mindfulness and meaning. You need to be present and centered like a meditative discipline teaches, while also willing to investigate and inquire into things. Analyzing your feelings is difficult if you’re emotionally reactive. Meditation allows you to explore emotions, delve deeper, form thoughts and notice details. I call this “expanding inner space.” Inner space is not a place, but a capacity that you develop to become centered, reflect and broaden your perspective. Once you cultivate this capacity, psychotherapeutic investigation becomes easier.

Courtesy of Jeffrey Rubin

What symptoms are you seeing more often in therapy sessions?

Greater alienation, powerlessness and loneliness. People are overwhelmed, foggy-headed and frazzled. As we face relentless tough news cycles, economic uncertainty and social divisions, people act like pinballs in a machine, ricocheting off walls and lashing out with road rage and impatience towards loved ones.

I think we’re seeking cotton-candy self-care. People watch Law and Order reruns and isolate themselves because they’re overwhelmed, so anything becomes too much. They seek quick routes to peace, but it’s like empty carbs for the spirit. Tastes good, and the next second, you’re hungry for more.

The alternative is to sit with the uncomfortable feelings, which is a trainable ability. As we learn to sit with more discomfort, we become more patient and tolerant, allowing us to eliminate adversarial relationships and form closer connections with less friction and meanness.

How can we learn to handle difficult emotions?

I call it equanimity training. Equanimity means accepting whatever happens with a calm, matter-offactness. I’m okay if there’s pleasure; I’m okay if there’s pain. In The Art of Flourishing, I wrote about our obsession with happiness. Although it’s nice that people are trying to cultivate positive emotions, eliminating discomfort reduces our tolerance for tough times.

To expand your tolerance for uncomfortable feelings, start by focusing on less emotionally triggering things in your meditation

practice. For example, learn to master sitting with increasingly uncomfortable sounds. Begin with a pleasant sound—hear it, let it wash over you. If your mind wanders, gently return your attention to the sound without judgment. Once you can do that, move to a neutral sound. Hear it. Let it wash over you. After mastering that, progress to an irritating sound, and eventually move to more challenging ones like a crying baby or a police siren.

Apply this practice to all five senses to develop presence, concentration and equanimity. Whether you’re observing a beautiful flower or a war-torn village, the skill set remains the same. You’re not numbing yourself; you’re experiencing without clinging or attachment. Simply let it wash over you and remain open to the next moment, greeting the present with freshness. You can then apply this to your emotions. If you’re scared, sit open to the experience, let it touch you and let it wash over you. This is a concrete way of calming ourselves.

What self-care measures do you recommend?

People have to live in two worlds simultaneously. They have to recognize what’s wrong and continue pursuing what they value. Keep chasing your passions, spending time in nature, connecting with lifespirited people and supporting older relatives. Stay active and eat healthy. Prioritize quality rest and strive for a meaningful life.

When Dogs Forget

A Holistic Guide to Canine Cognitive Health

As dogs age, changes in their behavior can be confusing and unexpected. These early shifts are frequently ignored, even though they may signal the onset of canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD), a progressive condition similar to Alzheimer’s disease in humans. Recognizing the signs and supporting cognitive health holistically can significantly improve a dog’s quality of life.

Common Symptoms

CCD is a neurodegenerative disorder that causes the gradual deterioration of the brain’s structure and function. Abnormal protein deposits known as beta-amyloid plaques accumulate in the brain, disrupting neural communication and causing

cognitive and behavioral changes. The condition typically occurs after age 11, but large breeds may exhibit symptoms sooner.

In a study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, researchers evaluated 180 senior dogs. Among the 15-to-16-year-olds, approximately 68 percent exhibited impairment in at least one behavioral category, and 35 percent demonstrated impairments in two or more categories.

Veterinarians use the acronym DISHAA to outline the most common signs. These include: disorientation (getting lost or stuck in corners, staring into space or wandering aimlessly); interaction changes (becoming more withdrawn, clingy or fearful of

familiar people or pets); sleep-wake cycle changes (restlessness at night and increased daytime sleep); house soiling (forgetting previously learned habits); activity-level changes (reduced interest in play); and anxiety (increased fear or restlessness).

Disease Origins

CCD is linked to brain inflammation, oxidative stress, and age-related changes in circulation within the brain. Beta-amyloid plaques similar to those seen in Alzheimer’s disease can interfere with communication between nerve cells, while reduced blood flow in the brain may contribute to problems with memory, learning and spatial awareness.

Metabolic changes may contribute to cognitive decline in aging dogs. Clinicians at the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals–Angell Animal Medical Center note that impaired neuronal glucose metabolism is one of several processes associated with cognitive impairment in dogs with CCD. This means brain cells may become less efficient at using glucose for energy, which can affect memory and orientation. Researchers have long explored the relationship between brain function and metabolism. In 1855, Claude Bernard demonstrated the link between brain function and glucose regulation in dogs. In human medicine, Professor Suzanne de la Monte, M.D., of Brown University, coined the term “Type 3 diabetes” to describe how disrupted insulin signaling in the brain may contribute to neurodegeneration similar to Alzheimer’s.

Environmental toxins increase stress. Holistic pet health coach and biotechnologist Karin Druckenmiller notes that lawn chemicals, household cleaners and water pollutants accelerate oxidative damage (leading to inflammation), disrupt mitochondrial function (affecting nerve cell energy) and interfere with neurotransmitter signaling (impairing nerve cell communications). These toxins are absorbed through dogs’

Milton Buzon/Shutterstock

paws, skin and respiratory systems, leading to a chronic increase in the brain’s inflammatory load.

Nutrition Therapy

Diet is a powerful tool for supporting cognitive health, and many nutrients have been shown to slow the decline. For dogs with CCD, the goal is to reduce brain and gut inflammation, stabilize blood sugar and nourish the microbiome without excessive starch. High-carbohydrate, ultra-processed diets pose a risk because chronic insulin spikes increase the metabolic burden on an already struggling brain.

A well-balanced, home-cooked diet is essential because it is complete, easily digested and allows pet owners to rotate proteins to minimize food sensitivities that can trigger neuroinflammation. Druckenmiller emphasizes that supporting a senior dog’s brain doesn’t need a dramatic overhaul; small, consistent improvements are most effective.

To start, she recommends adding fresh, antioxidant-rich foods like blueberries, leafy greens or omega-3 sources. A 2025 systematic review published in Geroscience concluded that omega-3 fatty acids have shown significant cognitive benefits in aging dogs. Switching to filtered water is another small but impactful way to reduce unnecessary contaminants and enhance overall brain health.

Many dogs benefit from a small amount of medium-chain triglyceride oil (MCT oil), which can offer an alternative energy source for the aging brain. A study in Epilepsy &

Behavior found that this supplement, derived from coconut oil, supported brain function and improved cognitive abilities in dogs with epilepsy.

Lifestyle Improvements

Dynamic daily routines and mental engagement can also help support cognitive health. The Dog Aging Project, which tracked more than 10,000 dogs, found that regular exercise was associated with fewer age-related behavior changes and a lower likelihood of cognitive dysfunction.

Scent-based activities are especially effective due to the strong link between smell and brain processing. Foraging toys like the snuffle mat, as well as scent trails or “find the treat” games, provide meaningful stimulation without physical strain.

Druckenmiller notes that predictable routines, gentle enrichment, soft evening lighting and clear pathways through the home significantly benefit dogs experiencing cognitive decline. Adding traction with rugs, yoga mats or non-slip runners enhances their stability and reduces anxiety from slipping.

Early Action

CCD is a progressive condition, but significant improvements are achievable, including fewer episodes of nighttime restlessness, calmer days and renewed interest in play. Monitoring changes with quality-oflife checklists and regular veterinary visits will guide care as a dog’s needs evolve. The strongest message from current research is to start early. Brain-supportive diets, consistent exercise, daily enrichment and routine wellness exams establish a strong foundation long before cognitive changes occur. With early, multi-modal support, dogs can remain engaged, comfortable and connected with their loving families as they age.

How to Eliminate the Herpes Viruses Permanently, Once and for All!

From the desk of Dr. Howard Robins at The Healing Center in New York City

Did You Have Chickenpox or a “Cold Sore”?

Most everyone answers “yes” to this question. If you answered yes, then you have a herpes infection. Both types of viral infections are easily transferred by contact with someone that has a current outbreak. You likely may have both!

Herpes zoster (HZ), commonly known as shingles, is a viral disease characterized by a painful skin rash with blisters in a limited area on one side of the body, often in a stripe. The initial infection causes the illness chickenpox, which usually occurs in children and young adults. Once the chickenpox is gone, the virus is not eliminated from the body and can go on to cause shingles. HZ is not the same disease as herpes simplex type 1 and 2, despite the similar name, though both HZ and herpes simplex belong to the same viral family.

time, especially in times of stress, using alcohol, or when eating foods high in a protein called L-arginine, found commonly in nuts and chocolate, among other foods.

It Can Be Eliminated!

HZ becomes dormant in some of our nerve cells without causing any symptoms. Many years after a chickenpox infection, the virus may break out of nerve cells and cause a viral infection of the skin in the area around the nerve. The virus may spread from one nerve to another causing a painful rash. Although the rash usually heals within two to four weeks, most people experience nerve pain for months or years, a condition called “postherpetic neuralgia.” In the past, outbreaks usually occurred in the elderly, but now it is common for anyone at any age that is under great stress or has a compromised immune system.

Herpes simplex 1 and 2 cause the oral or genital forms of what we commonly simply call “herpes.” It also spreads in a way similar to the HZ virus. Herpes simplex is a viral disease caused by both herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2. Oral herpes, the visible symptoms of which are often called “cold sores” or “fever blisters,” is an infection of the face or mouth. Oral herpes is the most common form, and genital herpes is the second most common form of infection. However, both types can be found both orally and genitally! Recurrent outbreaks may occur from time to

Treatments with antivirals can reduce outbreaks and may alleviate the severity of symptomatic episodes but will not get rid of the infection. Medical ozone is the only medicine known to destroy and rid the body of this horrible infection.

Please don’t believe the commercials on television saying you can never get rid of it. Though with no promises or guarantees, medical ozone has been used all over the world to treat infections that normally cannot be fixed, i.e., herpes in all its forms. Medical ozone is a gas that when it enters the body intravenously acts like “glue” to all viruses, bacteria, fungus, yeast and mold. It destroys or inactivates them so the body can remove them completely.

Most importantly, medical ozone does it without harmful adverse reactions or side effects so typical with pharmaceuticals. In more than 50 countries, over 45,000 physicians have been using it worldwide for over 70 years to successfully and safely treat diseases such as herpes.

So, don’t give up hope and don’t wait!
