letter from the publishers Summer is now in full swing! I remember as a child how much July meant to me. For one, my birthday falls right in the middle, followed by a family trip somewhere, usually to Cape Cod. We would get ice cream, go to drive-in movies, play mini-golf, hit the lakes and beaches, hike by waterfalls, picnic, grill and swim in my aunt and uncle’s pool. Notice the theme?

Being outside so much seems to increase our positive vibes and make us feel healthy and strong. That’s what summer embodies: getting out and enjoying the one true season that allows us to stay outside and put down the electronics. In the article “Wellness Without Walls,” finding different ways to keep fit by engaging with the outdoors offers a renewed outlook on exercise. Rather than staring at walls and mirrors, you’re “smelling the flowers and hearing everything around you.” When we’re walking with our heads in our phones, we miss little bits of nature at every step. My mother always said, “notice” when something in the great outdoors moved her, whether it was the way a tree swayed in the wind, the sound of waves crashing or the zooming noise of hummingbirds whizzing by our heads. Our boys are noticing and taking things outside this time of year…our oldest grabs a basketball and shoots hoops, our youngest and I discovered ‘rail riding,’ which has us pedaling a 2- or 4-seat rider along repurposed train tracks with views of lakes, woods, streams and rivers. He finally puts his phone on silent. Think of it as exercise with a view. And the best part of the summer is reconnecting, slowing down, putting the phones and iPads away, jumping into the waves and laughing together. Grabbing a kayak, testing your balance on a SUP board or just floating and focusing on your breathing in the water helps recalibrate your body and mind as you head back into the four walls of work and life with renewed energy. Grab your yoga mat from the closet, find a patch of grass, ditch the treadmill for a hike in the woods and put your phone on silent so you can hear the birds. I promise you will be feeling those outdoors vibes for a long time to come.

Self-Realization Fellowship Hosts World Convocation

Paramahansa Yogananda

Self-Realization Fellowship’s annual World Convocation will take place August 2 to 8 online and in person at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles. The free gathering welcomes spiritual seekers from around the world for an immersive experience in the yoga meditation teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda, author of Autobiography of a Yogi and founder of Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF).

Led by SRF monks and nuns, the World Convocation offers daily guided meditations, kirtan, inspirational talks on spiritual living and opportunities for meaningful connection. Topics include “The Art of Joyful Living: Yoga’s Path to Happiness,” “Becoming an Instrument of Divine Love” and “Inner Security Through Divine Connection.” Satsangs, or gatherings for questions and answers regarding spiritual truths, also are offered. Yogananda established the annual Convocation in 1950 to help aspiring yogis more deeply focus on what he considered the purpose of life: “… to bring out the buried soul immortality within us,” says Yogananda. Yogananda arrived in America in 1920 from India as a delegate to the International Congress of Religious Liberals in Boston, where he delivered a speech on the science of religion. He founded SelfRealization Fellowship that same year to share his Kriya Yoga teachings, which continue to inspire people to live with greater peace, joy and purpose. In-person attendees also may tour the temples and meditation gardens Yogananda established throughout the area. For more information, visit Convocation.Yogananda.org. Self-Realization Fellowship World Convocation is located at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel, 404 S Figueroa St., Los Angeles, California, and online. The event is free and open to all. See ad, page 13.

A Holistic Path to Emotional Wellness

Licensed clinical social worker and intuitive coach Danielle D. Relyea is helping individuals reconnect with their authentic selves beyond any diagnoses with a mind-body-spirit approach that addresses complex trauma, anxiety, addiction, mood disorders, unhealthy relationship patterns, chronic illness, stress and other life challenges. With 30 years of experiDanielle D. Relyea ence, Relyea combines AttachmentFocused Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (AF-EMDR) with Multidimensional Integrative Healing (MDIH), drawing upon neuroscience, transpersonal psychology and diverse therapeutic practices to support healing and transformation. “Traditional talk therapy may not fully access memories and sensations stored deep within the nervous system, but AF-EMDR integrates neuroscience, attachment theory and somatic processing to activate the brain's natural healing networks,” says Relyea. “Through this process, traumatic memories and emotions can be reprocessed so they no longer trigger overwhelming responses, often without the need for extensive retelling of painful experiences.” MDIH is a powerful method that combines AF-EMDR with spiritual and energetic practices. MDIH recognizes that different dimensions of reality exist and can support our growth when we access them. According to Relyea, everyone has forms of trauma and information that becomes stuck in the nervous system and disconnects individuals from their true, natural essence. Her work focuses on restoring wellness, strengthening and rewiring neural pathways that support positive emotions, clearing generational trauma patterns and helping clients reconnect with their innate intelligence. This therapeutic approach treats a variety of physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual difficulties, and moves people toward wholeness.

Protecting Your Vision Naturally This Summer

The Alexander Technique community is honoring the life and legacy of Rivka Cohen, a world-renowned teacher who influenced generations of practitioners and whose work continues through her students, including New York-based Alexander Technique teacher Jean McClelland.

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors. Spending time in nature can reduce stress, support healthy sleep, encourage physical activity and boost well-being. But while many people remember sunscreen for their skin, they often forget that their eyes need protection, too.

Cohen, known as “Rika,” passed away on February 15. According to the Israel Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique, she was among the profession's most respected senior teachers. Her training began in 1961 and continued with many renowned teachers. In 1980, she founded a teacher-training school in Israel, training generations of teachers and students. “Rika was a brilliant, demanding and powerful teacher with a hugely generous heart,” says McClelland. “She lives on every day in my words and in my hands.” McClelland expressed gratitude for the heartfelt tributes from colleagues and students following Cohen’s passing. The Israel Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique stated that Cohen's professional and human legacy will continue to accompany teachers and students worldwide. For more information, contact Jean McClelland at JeanMcClellandVoice.com. Jean McClelland is on the faculty of the Graduate Program in Acting at Columbia University, is an AmSAT-certified senior teacher of the Alexander Technique and has performed extensively in musical theater. She also offers in-person and virtual lessons and classes. See ad, page 12, and listing, page 28.

Long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light has been linked to eye conditions including cataracts, light sensitivity and retinal diseases like macular degeneration, glaucoma and growths on the eye surface. Wearing UV-blocking sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat helps reduce harmful exposure while outside. Nutrition can also help to protect the eyes. The vital eye nutrients, lutein and zeaxanthin, often called nature's “internal sunglasses,” help filter damaging blue light and support the health of the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp central vision. Antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, along with zinc, selenium, bioflavonoids and other essential nutrients, help combat oxidative stress associated with aging. To help support eye health, OpticaMD™ Daily Vision was recently launched. It is a comprehensive formula featuring lutein, zeaxanthin, bioflavonoids, vitamins and minerals designed to nourish the eyes and support healthy vision for years to come. Hormone Replenishment for Improved Wellness Individualized and Comprehensive

Unfortunately, many practitioners run incomplete testing and interpret hormone levels through very broad lab ranges designed to identify disease, rather than optimal health. This results in patients being told that their labs are “normal,” while they still do not feel normal or well.

A more advanced approach to hormone replenishment takes testing beyond standard blood work alone. Comprehensive hormone evaluation may include specialized testing such as a 24-hour urine hormone analysis and will provide a more complete picture of how hormones are actually being produced, metabolized and utilized by the body. Delivery method for hormones is also important. Most topical hormone products contain solvents, alcohols, fillers and chemical penetration enhancers, which is often a surprise to patients. Newer organic delivery systems are improving hormone absorption without the need for any harsh additives. “Hormones should never be treated as one-size-fits-all. Proper hormone optimization requires individualized care, careful monitoring and ongoing adjustments based on symptoms, testing and patient response over time,” says Dr. Jillian Finker of Finker Wellness, Inc., in Bellmore. “When done correctly, hormone replacement can help patients regain energy, improve sleep, support metabolism, improve mental clarity and simply feel better.” Location: 2308 Bellmore Ave., Bellmore, NY. New Center for Holistic Learning presents

Olive Oil Demystified Olive oil benefits the heart, brain and skin with polyphenols, high levels of vitamins A, D, E and antioxidants, but the many versions out there makes purchasing confusing. “Understanding the labels can help you purchase the best version of this liquid gold,” says Assunta Fusco, Owner of Apricus Naturals, LLC, who has studied herbs for 10 years, growing and picking herbs and olives to make soap. “The most common olive oil, and best for cosmetics, is refined, blended with a small amount of pure extra virgin oil.” A label to avoid for consumption is “pomace,” which Fusco says, “contains refined and processed oils blended with leftover olive oil that has lost all its properties.”

Awakening Your True Voice

The best version for eating is “cold pressed extra virgin,” which contains the original beneficial properties. This version is more expensive and has a strong flavor. “Virgin olive oil” is a little less intense and frequently preferred.

Coming Summer 2026

“Don’t buy olive oil in plastic bottles, labeled pomace or containing blends of different oils,” says Fusco. “Buy virgin or extra virgin in a dark glass bottle that has only one country of origin.”

Workshop will include In-person, Videoconference or Watch Online Recordings

Holistic Facial Aesthetics The Power of Platelet Rich Fibrin for Natural Rejuvenation

One advance in holistic facial aesthetics is the use of Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF), derived from the patient’s own blood. Rich in growth factors and regenerative cells, PRF helps stimulate collagen production, support tissue repair and promote healthier, more youthful appearing skin. Unlike traditional cosmetic procedures, PRF works by encouraging the body’s internal healing mechanisms to restore skin quality. As collagen production increases and tissue health improves, patients often notice smoother texture, improved elasticity, enhanced radiance and a refreshed appearance. PRF can help soften forehead lines, crow’s feet, the “11” lines between

the eyebrows, under eye hollows, fine lines around the mouth, neck creases and other signs of facial aging. A popular application of PRF is microneedling. By creating thousands of microscopic channels within the skin, microneedling allows regenerative growth factors to penetrate deeply and stimulate the body’s collagen response. This combination can improve skin texture, tone, pore size, acne scarring and overall skin quality, resulting in smoother, firmer and healthier appearing skin. PRF injections are commonly utilized in areas such as the under eyes, cheeks, jawline, neck and around the mouth. These treatments help support tissue regeneration and facial rejuvenation, creating natural looking improvements that continue to develop over time as new collagen is formed. Lip rejuvenation is another PRF application. Aging lips lose hydration, softness and

At Integrative Dental Specialists, Dr. Jeffrey Etess and his aesthetic nursing team embrace a holistic approach to facial aesthetics, combining advanced regenerative therapies with a deep understanding of facial harmony and natural beauty. Their goal is not to change how patients look, but to help them look healthier, refreshed and more confident through treatments that support the body’s ability to heal and rejuvenate. Mindful Resets

Feature Story

When Jennifer Stas-Eliades took up yoga, she bloomed, and from that place of transformation, she felt called to help others do the same. In 2014, she founded Wildflower Yoga Collective, in Flemington, New Jersey. “Yoga is not about being flexible, experienced or a certain age,” she asserts. “It isn’t about doing a headstand or touching your toes. It’s about showing up for yourself, exactly as you are.”

Wellness Without Walls Outdoor Connections for Body and Spirit

In partnership with local businesses, StasEliades pairs yoga classes with fun, social activities in interesting outdoors settings. Yoga at the Vineyard, for example, is held during sunset and includes a wine tasting. Yoga and Horseback Riding begins with a guided ride through breathtaking scenery, followed by stretches and yoga positions that help open the hips. Lavender Yoga takes place in the midst of a blooming field where students are encouraged to breathe in the calming lavender aroma. Afterward, they pick their own bouquet to take home.

O

ur daily lives can feel like a series of predictable routines often confined to the indoors, but a growing outdoor wellness movement is opening up new possibilities by weaving nature into holistic health practices and social gatherings. Whether paddleboarding along a tropical waterway, working out in the park or volunteering at a horse sanctuary, stepping outside brings a wealth of benefits. The American Psychological Association suggests that spending at least two hours a week in nature can nourish our physical and mental well-being, helping to reduce the risk of depression, cognitive decline and high blood pressure. Plus, engaging in an outdoor activity imparts a natural boost of vitamin D and strengthens our immune system. Research

gathered by Colorado State University Sustainability Leadership Fellow Kaiya Tamlyn indicates that spending time outside also encourages greater generosity and a deeper appreciation for the natural world. With so many activities available in both city and rural settings, it is easy to discover something new while making social connections along the way. Finding balance in a busy world is essential, and combining outdoor time, mindfulness and fun can be incredibly beneficial. There are many options to explore, from meditative mountain retreats to beachside drumming circles under the stars or forest bathing in lush green spaces. In a world where 62 percent of adults admit to being constantly online, swapping screens for something more real can recharge our spirits.

“It’s the greatest kind of office—being outside, surrounded by it all. I always arrive early, giving myself time to take it in, decompress, root into the ground, pet the horses or walk through the lavender,” says Stas-Eliades. “People often come to yoga class carrying the weight of their day—work, school pickups, the constant motion. But then they step onto the grass, onto their mat; the sun hits their skin; the breeze moves around them; and something softens. You’re really rooting into the ground in a way that isn’t just metaphorical like it can be in the studio. You’re smelling the flowers and hearing everything around you.”

Exploring Waterways

Nicole Killian, owner of SUP Englewood at the Don Pedro Island State Park, in Cape Haze, Florida, provides groups the opportunity to enjoy nature on kayaks or stand-up paddleboards. “Once on the water, we guide participants through mangrove tunnels, coastal waterways or open areas, depending on conditions,” says the 20-year paddling pro. “Spotting wildlife is always a possibility, especially dolphins, manatees and birds. We offer a real immersive experience based on what the environment gives us that day.” July 2026

According to Killian, people that are new to the sport are often surprised at how manageable and enjoyable stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking are. “We design our experiences to be beginner-friendly, so people leave with confidence,” she explains. “Families connect, kids get curious and there are also quiet moments on the water that allow people to slow down and really take in their surroundings. Those moments tend to have the biggest impact.” Ultimately, the SUP Englewood team of certified instructors and Florida Master Naturalists aims to inspire an understanding and compassion for the marine ecosystem. “I find that in order for someone to want to conserve the waterways, they have to fall in love with them,” says Killian. “We create experiences that motivate people to want to protect the delicate balance of our marine habitats for generations to come.”

Dynamic Hiking

bored with her usual routine, she decided to take her workouts outdoors and explore the Sierra Nevada terrain. “The natural environment challenged my body in new ways and re-engaged my mind,” she recalls. “I quickly saw improvements in performance, along with unexpected benefits like greater focus, calm and a renewed sense of joy.” Inspired by her experience, Vindum founded The Outdoor Fitness Institute, a science-based approach to exercise that leverages the natural environment. She uses elements like hills, trails, grass, trees, rocks, benches and open space to create more dynamic, functional movement. “Nature becomes your gym, and your body responds in ways machines simply can’t replicate,” she explains. “For most people, it can be as simple as walking or hiking on uneven ground, adding hill intervals or incorporating strength exercises like squats, lunges or push-ups in a park.”

Former professional alpine skier Tina Vindum discovered her true passion when she hit a plateau with indoor training. Feeling

she says. “It reconnects me to something deeper—a feeling of freedom, joy and aliveness that goes beyond fitness. It’s also how I connect with others.” A 2024 study published by Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience backs up Vindum’s assertions, finding a significant uptick in prefrontal cortical activation with increasing terrain unevenness during walking. The positive effects of sunlight on mood and mental health have also been researched and confirmed by numerous studies.

Wild Wanderings

Since 1976, Lanny Kaufer has been a firsthand witness to the rejuvenating power of outdoor hikes and finding hidden gems in nature. His Herb Walks in Southern California invite participants to get active while learning about the healing world of edible and medicinal plants. A typical excursion can last two to three hours of easy walking that is accessible for most people. “After acknowledging the local Indigenous people of whatever location we’re in and

The author of Medicinal Herbs of California: A Field Guide to Common Healing Plants says that his journey began with a spiritual awakening in the mountains of the Los Padres National Forest outside his home in Ojai. “I felt the plants speak to me,” Kaufer remembers, and that is when he felt called to help protect not only plants but also the rest of nature for future generations. Over time, he realized that people need to be inspired to protect nature, mostly by understanding why it matters. At nearly 80 years old, his passion is still as strong as it was in the 1970s. “Whether it’s a plant that can wash your hair, a seed that plants itself or a leaf that creates its own sunscreen, I am helping people find that value,” he says.

Seasonal Stewardship

Volunteering outdoors is a rewarding way to broaden our horizons. Whether we are helping with trail maintenance at a nature sanctuary or organizing campground activities, our efforts can make a positive impact. For five years, Stacy Turner has volunteered at the Winthrop National Fish Hatchery, in Washington state, greeting visitors, conducting hatchery tours and supporting events and field trips. Her enthusiasm for the hatchery’s mission is joyful and infectious, inspiring others to join the cause. “I wanted people to not just look at fish but also learn about the hatchery and all that they do to bring back the success of fish that are native to our area,” she explains, adding that visitors of all ages have expressed interest in pursuing a similar path of stewardship. “In a world that is plugged into the internet, it is always hard to remember that you can get way more out of life by stepping outside and exploring what is in your own backyard, and you are never too old to enjoy life.” Marlaina Donato is an author, painter and composer. egardless of the season, man has always been drawn to the outdoors for exercise, vitality and relaxation. Whether we prefer to bask in the sun and water on the beach or partake of fun in the winter cold and snow, we have four seasons to add variety to our lifestyles, as each season has its own appeal.

thanking the plants, we explore the trailside vegetation as we walk, stopping from time to time to point out what’s catching my attention, sharing stories about the plants and animals, responding to participants’ curiosity, discussing sustainable foraging and learning to identify helpful plants,” he explains.

The seasons also have a more impactful influence on our lives. They inherently affect our emotions, hormones, metabolism and weight, as well as the immune system. Understanding the basic elements of the planet (water, wood, fire, earth and metal), and how they manifest in the body (As it is Above, So it is Below), can be a valuable tool in utilizing this knowledge to restore our health. It is important to recognize the ways in which our bodies talk to us through changes in our homeostasis. Water manifests in the body through our kidneys and bladder, and impacts fear. Wood manifests in the body through our liver and gallbladder, and impacts anger. Fire manifests in the body through our heart and small intestines, and impacts joy. Earth manifests in the body through our stomach and spleen, and impacts worry. Metal manifests in our body through the lungs and colon, which impacts grief. The healing system of the Chinese 5-Elements reveals how we can identify health imbalances by the changes in which our bodies’ emotions and diets adjust to these five elements internally. Even the wisdom of the five elements in Ayurveda (Vata, Pita and Kapha), gives us remedies whenever the elements fall out of balance due to significant fluctuations in our sleep, emotions, hormones, diet or metabolism. Our body communicates with us through physical and emotional signs of digestive problems, uncontrolled anger, skin eruptions, breathing difficulties, urinary tract issues or excessive worry, grief or sorrow. Join the next cycle of our master herb course to gain the knowledge and tools to heal thyself. The course takes a deep dive into these very principles of Creation, to help you redefine the narrative for your personal health transformation. Lyme Disease and How to Overcome It From the desk of Dr. Howard Robins at The Healing Center in New York City

What’s Wrong with Me?

The Answer

Michael came into the office taking short baby steps. His 19-year-old arms and hands were bent and twisted into a weird, spasmodic position. His head tilted to the side, eyes nearly closed, with his face in a strange grimace. He spoke in short three-or four-word sentences. He had been suffering since he was 13 years old, and his father was ready to institutionalize him for the rest of his life. Until he became ill, he was a normal boy and a computer whiz. One day, he developed what appeared to be the flu, except it was in the summer and not the flu season.

In many, but not all cases, antibiotics may eliminate the infection and its symptoms, especially if the illness is treated early. Unfortunately, even when caught early, antibiotics don’t always work. Many people are allergic to the drugs needed or develop sensitivity reactions and have to stop them. Delayed or inadequate treatment (often treating for too short a period of time) can lead to more serious symptoms, which can be disabling and even harder to treat—that is, unless medical ozone is used.

The Cause The disease, a worldwide pandemic, is named after the towns of Lyme and Old Lyme in Connecticut, where a large number of cases of Lyme disease were identified in 1975. The infection is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected ticks. The ticks are extremely small and often fall off the body after feeding, thus masking the fact that you’ve been bitten.

The Symptoms and the Difficulty in Diagnosis Early symptoms may include fever, headache, fatigue, depression and a characteristic circular skin rash, which has a “bullseye” (target-like) appearance. The “bulls-eye rash” is thought to occur in only about 80 percent of infected patients, adding to misdiagnosis. Patients often experience flu-like symptoms, such as headache, muscle soreness, fever and malaise, which can also confuse early diagnosis. Lyme arthritis usually affects the knees and feet, and, in some patients, can occur in other joints, including the ankles, elbows, wrists, hips and shoulders. Pain is often mild or moderate, usually with swelling at the involved joint. In rare cases, Lyme disease can cause fatal complications. 18

Numerous courses of oral and intravenous antibiotics failed to work. His symptoms worsened over the years, and several Lyme disease experts later left him in the state in which he arrived at our office. He had late-stage Lyme disease.

Over the past 22 years, intravenous medical ozone has been safely and effectively used to destroy and eliminate Lyme disease, even in late-stage infections. Often, when all hope is gone, even after years of suffering, medical ozone has proven successik Er ful. Usually in just a few weeks, symptoms begin to diminish, offering hope and finally giving relief. When it enters the body, intravenous medical ozone attacks and kills all Lyme disease-causing bacteria. It does it safely, with virtually no adverse reactions. In addition, it destroys all unwanted viruses, fungus, yeast, mold, harmful free radicles and toxins, thus cleansing your body and boosting your own natural immune system. And did I say it does it safely and with virtually no adverse reactions? Food Can’t Fix Everything A Nutritional Issue is Not The Same as a Functional Issue

www.kaboompics.com/Pexels.com with AI edits in Photoshop

by Dr. David Pollack

A

fter almost 20 years blessed with the opportunity to help people using a Functional Medicine approach, I have noticed a significant change in new patients. I hope this change is a sign of a greater shift in all of society. For about the first 10 years, most new patients required coaching on food, nutrition and diet. I have amazing staff, two who handle those with enthusiasm and expertise. In the past 5 years or so, the majority of new patients have been eating better than I might have coached them 10 years earlier. Despite people eating better than I could have hoped, my office is the busiest it’s ever been. The types of problems people have are no different and, in some cases,

they might be more complicated. But this doesn’t mean that eating well doesn’t matter—it definitely matters. In fact, this caused me and my associates a dilemma that I never could have foreseen. By eating healthily, my new patients are doing themselves a great service even when they can’t see the difference. (But I do.) In my first decade of practice, when I had a consultation or examination with a patient, everything hurt, it was intense and I would find issues beyond what the patient knew of. It was sometimes overwhelming for them. Lately, the situation has been different. Besides eating well, my newer patients are very educated on their issues and functional medicine concepts. Examination and consultations are a bit different now. While

the main problem is certainly there with a couple side issues, results are more subtle, more specific, even hidden at times. My craft needed to become more refined, more sensitive. Eating well has actually done its job, but ironically it made my job more difficult. On the other side, my new clients had become more frustrated, less hopeful. They made all these changes and from their perspective very little changed with their health challenges. Most of my colleagues in the functional medicine field are still using early 2000s boiler plate treatments and strategies to deal with this new type of patient. As a result, I have expanded and searched for more and new methods to help. Things like advanced acupuncture, moxibustion techniques, life-changing emotional release methods and detoxification strategies, on top of the tried-and-true methods. Indeed, there are people with nutritional problems. Not the right diet, allergies, poor vitamin load, etc. But many people are starting to realize there is something else going on—likely a functional issue. Something in their body is not working right. Food will not fix that. That doesn’t mean diet doesn’t matter, but putting higher quality gas in your car doesn’t fix a busted engine or transmission (although bad gas might make it worse). Poor diet might add inflammation to an already struggling system and a good diet might decrease that inflammation, but it isn’t solving the problem. We need to identify the engine problem and fix it, not just play with the fuel. Again, this is not to say that some issues aren’t nutritional, but from my experience, most people have functional issues and they can be found and repaired. Dr. David L. Rhythm and Renewal The Transformative Power of Group Drumming by Hannah Tytus

the pull of their differences,” says Arant. “People become entrained. Entrainment is the process where two interacting, oscillating systems synchronize to the same rhythm. Our heartbeats and brainwaves become synchronized when we drum together.”

cross cultures and throughout history, rhythm has been used to support healing, celebration and connection. From traditional ceremonies to modern wellness gatherings, drumming communities create a space where people can share rhythm together, often without the need for extensive musical training or performance. Participants simply follow the beat, listen and contribute their own sound, creating a collective experience that can feel both grounding and energizing.

group drumming sessions to help build resilience through self-expression, and in 2022, he presented a TEDx talk on how this traditional practice can help heal trauma.

Spiritual Renewal

Unity and Empowerment

For him, the West African djembe—played with bare hands—offers a way to process emotion and transform tension. He leads

“Drumming together in a group creates a bridge between people that is stronger than

“Drumming is not just something I play—it is a call to the strength of my ancestors,” says Francis Agyakwa, an educator and social worker reflecting on his Ghanaian heritage. “When we play the drum, we are giving back our tears, our toils and our stress to Mother Earth.”

20

New York City – Long Island

When mentoring youth, Agyakwa has seen firsthand the benefits of drumming as a discipline and an intervention. “Their minds stop wandering,” he explains. “They are finally present. For that moment, all they have to do is sit, focus and experience the drum.”

Kristen Arant is a performing artist, songwriter and educator in the Washington, D.C., area. Affectionately known as “The Drumlady”, she leads the Bele Bele Rhythm Collective, a diverse, intergenerational group of women and non-binary folks that celebrate unity and spread the joy and power of West African drumming.

NaturalAwakeningsNY.com

Arant founded and ran the Young Women’s Drumming Empowerment Project from 2005 to 2015 to help teenage girls use drumming as a tool for building self-esteem, personal growth and healing. As the young women learned to play the djembe, they were able to release buried emotion, amplify their voices and express their most authentic selves through rhythm. “When you sit down in a drumming circle, you’re harnessing the power of ancient technology, and the healing process begins as soon as you put your hands on a drum and begin to play,” Arant explains, adding that playing with bare hands allows the player to channel and express feelings of love, freedom and empowerment.

Addiction Recovery and Brain Health

Daniel Dickerson, an associate research psychiatrist at the University of California, Los Angeles, Integrated Substance Use and Addiction Programs, studies the effectiveness of Native American drumming as a treatment for substance use disorders. “Drumming has been a core aspect of the identity of Native Americans,” he says. “It is a very sacred, spiritual practice that is culturally and community-rooted. With cultural-based interventions, we believe there is an opportunity to heal from historical trauma and to restore the balance.”

Live a Life of Purpose

Dickerson also points out that earlier research has shown that “drumming helps to enhance healthy brainwave activity, very similar to what you would see in meditation.” With this increased connectivity between different brain regions, “you have a better ability to handle your feelings and make better decisions.” Nevertheless, healing and recovery require long-term commitments. “You need consistency to sustain any healthy practice,” he observes.

Skills and Practice

“There is so much more to drumming than just sitting there and banging on the head of the djembe. There is a structure to it, such as making different shapes with your hands and bouncing them off a surface in different ways,” says Agyakwa, adding that once students learn the basic techniques, they can flow into creative expressions with more ease. “Each person brings a unique sound to the ensemble,” he remarks. “When we sit in a circle, there’s no hierarchy—only connection. You are going to get out of it as much as you give. Always remember to honor the people that brought this incredible ritual to you. The energy, the joy, the connection—we generate that together.” Hannah Tytus is an integrative health coach, former writer at the National Institutes of Health and host of the Root Shock podcast, exploring the cultural dimensions of health.

A 2021 clinical trial of Drum-Assisted Recovery Therapy for Native Americans, developed by Dickerson, showed that drumming reduced drug and alcohol use, decreased cognitive impairment and lowered physical ailment complains among American Indian/Alaska Native participants. “Substance use is a disease of isolation,” he explains. “With drumming, you get plucked out of your own self and your isolated state, and you are thrown into a supportive Native American community.”

Cool Canines Holistic Summer Tips To Keep Dogs Happy, Active and Itch-Free by Ruth Roberts, DVM, CVA, CVH, CVFT, NAN

If parasitic activity is especially high in a specific area, or local disease cases are increasing, it might be appropriate to use a conventional preventive for a short while. Avoiding tick-borne illness and flea anemia should be the priority. A well-nourished dog with a robust immune system is better equipped to respond to environmental challenges, which is why nutrition and parasite management work together, rather than in isolation.

Movement and Recovery

A

s the weather warms up, dogs often find themselves dealing with overheating and seasonal pests, as well as the physical toll of longer walks and increased outdoor activities. Addressing these seasonal challenges proactively can help our furry friends stay comfortable, active and resilient all summer long.

Hydration, Shade and Smart Timing

Dogs generate body heat quickly, and their cooling systems are less efficient than ours. Shifting activity to early morning or evening can significantly reduce thermal stress. Pavement can reach temperatures that damage paw pads even before it feels uncomfortable, so it is a good idea to choose grass or shaded trails whenever possible. Carrying more water than seems necessary is usually the right call. Water breaks every 15 to 20 minutes on active outings 22

Certified holistic pet health coach, canine rehabilitation practitioner and canine fitness trainer Jennifer Holmes brings a grounded, practical lens to summer conditioning, working with dogs across a wide range of fitness levels and health histories.

and adding warm broth or gently cooked food to the bowl at home will help keep them hydrated. If a dog is panting heavily after a mild exertion or cannot settle down indoors, it is time to take a break and cool down to prevent further complications.

“Summer movement should support the body, rather than overload it,” she says. “I encourage shorter outings in the cooler parts of the day, joint-friendly surfaces like grass or dirt trails and plenty of recovery between adventures.”

Peak flea and tick season calls for a comprehensive, layered approach. Daily combing after outdoor playtime, frequent baths after trail runs, hot-water washing of bedding and consistent vacuuming collectively address the environmental lifecycle that on-pet products alone cannot effectively manage.

Overweight dogs need not be excluded from summer activities. Research published in Veterinary Research Communications shows that even a small amount of weight loss can improve lameness in obese dogs with osteoarthritis, with improvements seen once weight loss reaches 6.1 percent. An overview published by the Canadian Academy of Veterinary Nutrition explains that body fat not only adds extra pressure to joints, but also releases inflammatory compounds like leptin, which can increase inflammation within the joints and throughout the body.

A rinse for external use made with two ounces of apple cider vinegar and a gallon of water can also help reduce the overall flea problem when used regularly with other measures. Use a sponge or hands to apply the diluted vinegar to the coat, especially under the tummy and along the inside of

For senior dogs or those with joint concerns, Holmes suggests focusing on small, consistent investments, rather than larger, infrequent efforts. She explains, “A smart summer day may include a short morning walk; a few, gentle strength exercises; rest during the heat; and another easy

exposures summer brings. Moisture-rich, gently cooked meals tend to support digestion and hydration more effectively than dry, ultra-processed kibble, particularly during warmer months.

When it comes to hands-on recovery at home, Holmes advises pet parents to start with calm observation. “Run your hands lightly over the body and notice heat, tension, sensitivity or swelling. Then, use slow, gentle strokes over the shoulders, back, hips and legs,” she counsels. “Light massage, gentle muscle compression, slow paw holds and quiet rest can help the nervous system settle.” The key rhythm she describes is simple: “Dogs build strength through movement, and they recover during rest.”

Consistency Is Key

Nutrition as Foundation

Beyond exercise and weight management, Holmes notes that nutrition is also crucial for mobility. Quality protein, healthy fats, hydration and colorful, dog-safe vegetables can all contribute to joint health and movement. Supplements such as omega-3s,

movement session later. Simple exercises like slow walking, sitting on a hill, backing up, stepping over low objects and weight shifts can support strength, balance and confidence.”

green-lipped mussel, collagen, glucosamine chondroitin, turmeric and herbs that support a healthy inflammatory response may also aid in joint comfort and mobility. It is best to use these supplements under the guidance of a veterinarian or certified pet health coach. For dogs with sensitive digestion or those traveling frequently, a spore-based probiotic that survives heat can help maintain resilient gut function on the road. Consistent dietary choices impact coat condition, joint resilience, inflammatory tone and a dog’s ability to handle the environmental

Holistic summer wellness does not require perfection or a complete departure from conventional tools. It is built upon small, repeatable habits: keeping the bowl moisture-rich and nutritionally sound; moving with intention and allowing appropriate recovery time; layering parasitic protection proportionately; and knowing a dog’s baseline well enough to notice early changes. As Holmes puts it, “Activity today should support tomorrow’s movement.” Done consistently, these daily choices help protect comfort now, while supporting resilience and mobility in the future. Wise Words

Why are your tours unique?

They are all spiritually oriented, though spirituality isn’t required to participate. We visit sacred locations and always include meditation sessions, both in the morning and at the sacred sites. In Italy, my tours feature sound baths. While a local guide often accompanies us, I also provide insights into the spiritual philosophies of the places we explore.

Journeys That Change Us

This type of travel is especially powerful when it helps people form a connection to something. We’re not just visiting beautiful locations; we’re immersing ourselves in places imbued with wonderful energy.

A Conversation With Anthony Profeta by Sandra Yeyati

In Rishikesh, we visit the Beatles’ ashram, now a museum, which delights fans standing where John Lennon and George Harrison once did. I discuss Transcendental Meditation, which the band members practiced, and we engage in a meditation session there. We might also talk about how their meditation and spirituality influenced their music.

enowned meditation teacher and sound-therapy expert Anthony Profeta leads transformative retreats in spiritual destinations worldwide such as India, Greece, Italy, Bali, Thailand and Nepal. Over the past 26 years, he has dedicated his life to studying Eastern and Western contemplative traditions under the mentorship of esteemed teachers, including Sharon Salzberg, Jack Kornfield, Lama Zopa Rinpoche and the Dalai Lama. Profeta developed an interest in sound healing during his time in an Indian monastery where Tibetan monks used Himalayan singing bowls in meditation. He conducts transcendent sound baths in sold-out venues across the U.S. and provides singing

bowl therapy at the Cleveland Clinic and New Horizons of the Treasure Coast & Okeechobee, a mental health and substance abuse recovery agency. In 2025, Profeta earned the award for Best Sound Therapist in the U.S. from Evergreen Awards. Profeta’s upcoming trips include The Soul of Egypt Tour from September 13 to 24, offering private access to all three chambers of the Great Pyramid; a Sedona retreat from October 29 to November 2, featuring therapeutic hikes among the area’s worldfamous red rocks; and a return to Egypt in 2027 for The Veil of Ra Eclipse from July 28 to August 4, allowing participants to experience six minutes of midday darkness among the temples of ancient Thebes. NaturalAwakeningsNY.com

In Bodh Gaya, where Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree, there’s always at least one person moved to tears when they sit under the tree. It changes them. In Egypt, some feel like they’ve had a past life there, and now they’re reconnected with it. These trips often become pilgrimages of connection and awakening. Because it’s group travel, it becomes a shared experience that creates lasting bonds. Whether we’re watching a sunset in Sedona, walking through sacred sites, sharing meals or riding a bus, we share stories, get to know each other and laugh together. Those moments become emotional anchors that connect people long after the trip ends. Some of the most meaningful journeys are the ones we share.

What makes a place sacred?

That’s a tough question to answer because what people consider sacred is subjective. For some, the awe-inspiring peaks of Mount Shasta are as sacred as a 4,000-yearold temple. The beauty of a place can make it spiritual.

the valley, they begin to cry and say, “I can’t believe I did this.” This achievement makes them feel stronger, accomplished and capable of breaking through limiting barriers. They return home feeling more courageous and ready to face other challenges bravely.

On the other hand, Varanasi, India, is one of the seven sacred cities to Hindus, where many go to die. In the Hindu tradition, it’s a place where cremations occur along the Ganges River. When I take Westerners to witness this, they can’t believe it’s happening out in the open like that. So, what makes a place sacred is subjective.

What kinds of transformations have you witnessed?

Very often, when I guide a meditation in a pyramid or a beautiful location, people start to cry. Some feel connected to a past

Because Assisi is a UNESCO World Heritage site, it cannot be modernized, so you are transported back to medieval Italy. I lead discussions about the life of St. Francis, including his spiritual ideas and practices. People have told me they can feel a deep connection to St. Francis there, sensing his spirit in the olive groves and streets. It’s as if they’re taking his same footsteps, and it becomes a very spiritual experience.

life; others share that they have received a crucial message they needed to hear. Couples have walked away transformed by the shared experience and the meditations, promising to continue meditating together at home to support each other’s journeys. In Sedona, I’ve seen people pushed beyond their comfort zones. Whether we're walking or hiking, when they reach the top of the mountain and they’re looking out over

What words of encouragement do you have for those afraid of joining strangers in a group-travel setting?

We help people step out of their comfort zones. I often tell them that the beautiful surprises that come from the unknown can be incredibly rewarding. Sometimes the strangers we travel with become the people that transform us. Strangers can become friends, and these friends can feel like family. Another Leap Forward in Dental Healing:

THE DENTAL FACE LIFT

THE HIDDEN LINK BETWEEN YOUR SMILE AND FACIAL AGING Thinking about facial aging brings up wrinkles, sun exposure, genetics and skin quality. While these certainly contribute, an overlooked cause of facial aging is found in the teeth.

Years of grinding, clenching, acid erosion, fractures and untreated dental disease can reduce tooth height and alter the way the upper and lower jaws meet. As this occurs, the height between the upper and lower jaws begins to decrease. The distance between the nose and chin shortens, lips lose support, facial folds deepen and the lower third of the face appears prematurely aged. Modern restorative dentistry can rebuild this foundation. It’s important for comfort and function, but Patients are surprised to learn that rebuilding worn teeth is like a “Dental Face Lift” because it restores the underlying structural support and reestablishes proper vertical dimension. Facial balance improves along with enhanced lip support, a more defined jawline and a healthier, more youthful appearance. At Integrative Dental Specialists, under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Etess, treatment is approached from a comprehensive perspective that considers both oral health and its impact on facial harmony. Rather than simply repairing individual teeth, the goal is to restore function, preserve natural structures whenever possible and support long-term health and aesthetics. All-ceramic dental crowns closely replicate the appearance and strength of natural teeth. When carefully planned and precisely executed, ceramic restorations can rebuild worn or damaged teeth, restore bite relationships, reestablish vertical dimen-

sion and the support that contributes to a youthful appearance. For patients who have experienced tooth loss, dental implants have revolutionized treatment possibilities. By replacing the missing tooth root, implants help preserve jawbone volume while restoring strength, function and aesthetics. Implants integrate with the surrounding bone and provide a long-lasting foundation.

This philosophy reflects what Dr. Jeffrey Etess has pursued throughout three decades of clinical practice: a level of precision, innovation and biologically driven treatment beyond conventional dentistry. It is the commitment to providing what can only be described as Unrivaled Dental Care—care designed not merely to repair problems, but to preserve health, restore function, support facial harmony and create lasting results.

Jeffrey Etess, DMD, NMD, IBDM, graduated in the top 10% from the prestigious University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. An IVY LEAGUE trained Certified Endodontic Specialist/Implant Specialty Surgeon with a dual degree in Dentistry and Board Certified in Naturopathic & Integrative medicine & certified in biomimetic cosmetic dentistry to provide a broad array of biological dentistry covering all facets of restorative, cosmetic, prosthetic, surgical, endodontic, pediatric, periodontal and implant dentistry for his patients for over 29 years. Advancements in regenerative dentistry have further elevated treatment outcomes. One is the use of Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF). Derived from the patient's own blood, PRF contains concentrated growth factors that support tissue regeneration and enhance the natural healing response. Etess and his team routinely incorporate advanced PRF protocols into implant placement, bone grafting, ridge augmentation, sinus grafting, extraction site preservation and soft tissue regeneration procedures. These biologically driven techniques support healing and help create a stronger foundation for long-term success. A healthy smile not only improves appearance, it also preserves the framework of the face. July 2026
