In this issue, we dive deep into the growing importance of gut health—a cornerstone of well-being. Don’t miss Wise Words with Dr. Dean Mitchell, featuring his insights on overcoming candida (p. 24), along with a thoughtful interview on navigating this common but complex condition. Our feature article offers a practical, compassionate guide to Integrative Medicine, outlining the powerful tools and philosophies that form the foundation of this whole-person approach (p. 16). We also celebrate our readers, beginning the year with Keith Fiveson’s spotlight on page 19—a moving story of resilience, presence and mindful leadership. Lastly, this issue is a celebration of community. We extend heartfelt thanks to the many local businesses and advertising partners who make this magazine possible. Another Leap Forward in Dental Healing:

REDEFINING MODERN DENTISTRY WITHOUT BOUNDARIES

In today’s competitive and ever-evolving world, choosing a dental professional with an expanded skill set is not just a preference but a necessity. Such dental experts bring versatility, innovation and a unique ability to address dental restorative challenges that other dentists may avoid. Unlike those who strictly adhere to conventional practices, professionals with diverse expertise can bridge gaps, think critically, and deliver creative solutions across various treatment domains. Their ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances and approach problems from multiple perspectives ensures that no treatment opportunity is overlooked. Furthermore, they possess the resilience and commitment to take on complex cases others might deem unmanageable. At Integrative Dental Specialists, Dr. Etess and his team pride themselves on providing the personalized attention you deserve. They deliver the highest level of dental expertise, meticulously performed with skill and precision, without compromise. The practice is committed to achieving outstanding long-term functional and aesthetic dental results. All too often, patients are told they need a root canal or that their tooth cannot be saved. This can be particularly distressing when it involves a front tooth, as it significantly affects one’s smile and selfconfidence. However, saving your natural tooth with advanced restorative dental techniques is essential for both your oral health and overall well-being. Natural teeth are designed to last a lifetime, and preserving them maintains the structural 8

New York City – Long Island

integrity of your mouth, which is vital for proper chewing, speaking and maintaining facial aesthetics. Tooth loss can cause surrounding teeth to shift, leading to misalignment, bite problems, and additional strain on the remaining teeth, often resulting in further complications. While dental implants are a reliable solution for replacing lost teeth, they are not natural teeth and come with their own long-term challenges. Full-mouth dental implant reconstruction, often referred to as All-on-4, is an option for patients with severely compromised teeth. However, ensuring that full-arch or full-mouth dental implants are placed correctly requires advanced expertise. Dr. Etess is residency-trained in dental implantology, a credential that far surpasses the qualifications of weekend courses often taken abroad. When it comes to your health, expertise truly matters. Advanced restorative dentistry provides the ability to preserve and restore even severely damaged teeth through innovative techniques, such as composite bonding and biomimetic methods that replicate the tooth’s natural structure. When necessary— and only after all other options have been exhausted—biological root canal therapy or regenerative procedures like ToothRegenesis can help maintain optimal tooth health. Natural-looking all-ceramic crowns, advanced periodontal gum rejuvenation, and next-generation bone grafting procedures allow Dr. Etess to restore your mouth to its ideal condition. These techniques not only save or replace damaged teeth, but also restore full functionality and a youthful, natural appearance to your smile. NaturalAwakeningsNY.com

What sets Dr. Etess apart is his unwavering commitment to exceeding expectations by listening to patients' needs and delivering unmatched care and unparalleled dentistry. Utilizing his extensive specialist training and exceptional expertise, Dr. Etess provides personalized, premier unrivaled dental treatment with accessibility and compassion. Staying at the forefront of dental advancements is a top priority for Dr. Etess. To ensure patients' safety and comfort, the practice employs enhanced ultraviolet air and surface disinfection protocols. If you seek the finest, safest, healthiest and most predictable results supported by the latest technology, contact Integrative Dental Specialists to schedule your appointment today. Jeffrey Etess, DMD, NMD, IBDM, graduated in the top 10% from the prestigious University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. An IVY LEAGUE trained Certified Endodontic Specialist/Implant Specialty Surgeon with a dual degree in Dentistry and Board Certified in Naturopathic & Integrative medicine & certified in biomimetic cosmetic dentistry to provide a broad array of biological dentistry covering all facets of restorative, cosmetic, prosthetic, surgical, endodontic, pediatric, periodontal and implant dentistry for his patients for almost 30 years. Community News Briefs

A growing movement in New York City is reframing wellness through a whole-person lens—one that integrates physical, emotional, environmental and community health. Recent city reports on ecological justice highlight that neighborhoods such as the South Bronx, East Harlem and parts of Brooklyn continue to face disproportionate rates of asthma, heart disease and heat-related illness due to poor air quality, industrial zoning and limited access to green space.

Across Long Island, health and wellness are being shaped by more t h an ju st medical care. From concer ns ab out drinking water to climate change and food insecurity, residents are facing a web of environmental and social stressors that affect whole-person well-being.

“There’s nothing more fundamental than the right to breathe,” said Eddie Bautista, executive director of the NYC Environmental Justice Alliance in a past press report, underscoring how clean air is essential to human health. At the same time, nature-based therapies are gaining traction across the boroughs. Studies have linked time spent in parks and green spaces with reduced stress, improved immune function and better mental clarity—but access remains deeply unequal. “Without clean air,” says Elizabeth C. Yeampierre, executive director of UPROSE in Brooklyn, “we couldn’t fight for justice.” Adding to the concern, researchers have recently detected microplastics in human organs and blood, raising urgent questions about long-term health impacts. In response, many wellness practitioners are incorporating detox strategies and environmental education to help New Yorkers live cleaner, more resilient lives.

NYC Wellness Movement Linked to Clean Air

In Calverton, expanded testing near the former Grumman-Navy site has renewed concern over PFAS—so-called “forever chemicals” associated with cancer, liver damage and immune disruption, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Climate change is also hitting home. “Winter temperatures on Long Island have risen more than 4 degrees Fahrenheit since 1970—faster than the national average,” reports Climate Central. Public health officials warn that warmer winters can extend the range of ticks and mosquitoes, increasing the risk of Lyme disease and other vectorborne illnesses. Food insecurity is climbing, too. “There are families who have never used food pantries before who are now coming to us for help,” says Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest. Advocates agree: whole-person health begins with clean water, nourishing food and a stable climate.

Why Probiotics are so Important What Works and What Doesn’t

From the Desk of Dr. Howard Robins at The Healing Center in New York City… You will likely be very surprised when you read the following facts—many of which are simply astounding!

amounts. What they discovered was that the probiotics just go in and just go out and don’t populate the gut. They were shocked!

Probiotic bacteria help digest your food in exchange for a warm, safe place to live. They not only help process the food we eat, but they also make vitamins and can produce essential amino acids. Plus, they’re able to talk to and educate our immune system.

Antibiotics and Good Bacteria

Yet, Hippocrates, the famed ancient Greek physician, was purported to say that “all disease begins in the gut.” On a recent 60 Minutes news segment on probiotics, Dr. Patricia Hibberd, an infectious disease specialist and a professor of medicine at Boston University, was asked, “Is there convincing evidence that commercially available probiotics have been found to be beneficial for reducing diarrhea from antibiotics, treating irritable bowel syndrome, or decreasing allergies?” Her answer was, “no!” She went on to say, “The whole idea that maybe throwing in good bacteria that we would take by mouth that hopefully would land in the right places in the GI tract and work with the immune system, we just don't know how to do any of that.” A major cause of confusion may be the placebo effect whereby some people using probiotics may feel better because they expect to feel better. Israel’s Weizmann Institute of Science professors Eran Elinav and Eran Segal collected thousands of samples from a small group of adult volunteers who were given probiotics following multiple endoscopies and colonoscopies to see what was in their gut. Half of the individuals were given placebos and half were given probiotics in very large 10

New York City – Long Island

Have you ever had an antibiotic? Even once in your lifetime? Well, guess what, all your good gut bacteria are gone! Antibiotics kill the good boys off with the bad bacteria rapidly. You may be thinking you’re okay because you take probiotics daily. Well, guess what, virtually 90 percent of them are destroyed by your stomach acids and digestive enzymes and never reach your gut. The rest rarely, if at all, populate the gut wall as discussed and proven above by the researchers. “But it says they were alive at the time of manufacturing on the label,” you think. Yes, they are supposedly in “suspended animation,” but most are dead and those that aren’t dead won’t come back to life even if they survive the stomach. This is what was found and explains the comments and results of the researchers. Dr. Jeff Gordon of 60 Minutes said, “Despite disagreement about how or whether today’s probiotics work, every scientist we spoke with was hopeful about the possibility of improving health by manipulating the microbiome.” All my patients need probiotics as my intravenous ozone therapy will destroy all bacteria, just not as fast as antibiotics. This is what led me to find a product that can really work. Is there an answer? Is there a product that can really work?

Finally, YES! Doctor’s Biome Colon Health.

After years of costly research, in answer to overcoming all the concerns and problems NaturalAwakeningsNY.com

with probiotics, Doctor’s Biome Colon Health was finally created. Extensive use and testing on patients by doctors from around the country have proven its benefits. What makes this new, first of its kind probiotic so special is that it combines 15 strains of PATENTED (they have letters and numbers after their names), LIVING (when you swallow the delicious 100 percent organic vegetable-fruit juice they are ‘awake and alive adults’), NEXT GENERATION SMART BACTERIA that are made and laboratory tested to survive the stomach more than 85 percent and populate the wall of your gut. “Smart” bacteria can sense they’re attached to your intestinal cells, and then remodel their expression of specific genes, including those involved in metabolism, to beneficially exploit your cells and colonize your gut. So finally, you can stop wasting your money on products that have been shown to have virtually no value and take ones that will really make a difference. More information about this amazing, safe and effective treatment is available at OzoneWithoutBorders. ngo and OzoneDoctor. net. Health Briefs

Cancer patients treated with doxorubicin, a common chemotherapy drug, may suffer heart damage, including reduced heart function, irregular heart rhythms and heart failure. A 2025 study published in Nature investigated whether astaxanthin, a natural antioxidant found in certain seafood and algae, could help reduce the damage. The researchers divided study rats into a group that received only doxorubicin, two groups that received doxorubicin along with different doses of astaxanthin, and a control group. They used ultrasound scans to check blood markers for heart injury, examined heart tissue, measured cellular energy levels and analyzed proteins related to mitochondrial health. Rats given doxorubicin alone experienced heart damage, mitochondrial disruptions and lower energy levels in the heart. By contrast, rats treated with astaxanthin showed improved heart function compared to the doxorubicin group, fewer signs of injury, healthier heart tissue and higher cellular energy levels. Astaxanthin also protected the structure and function of mitochondria. Further research in humans is needed to confirm whether astaxanthin could safely and effectively be used alongside chemotherapy.

Biofield tuning (BT) balances the body’s energy field using sound vibrations. A 2023 study published in Complementary Therapies in Medicine involved 15 participants that received three weekly hour-long BT sessions over Zoom from certified practitioners during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Participant surveys revealed significant reductions in anxiety, negative emotions and perceived stress after the treatments. They also reported feeling more positive and less overwhelmed. The practitioners observed a decrease in negative emotional language by the participants, indicating a shift to a more positive emotional state. Although the study was small, the results suggest that soundbased energy healing could be an effective, low-risk option for managing anxiety.

Got Milk? Here’s How to Share the Love

Many mothers are unaware of the incredible resource that is their local mothers’ milk bank, such as The New York Milk Bank. These banks help bridge the gap for families who cannot produce enough milk or afford formula. Lactating mothers who produce a surplus can get screened and donate their extra “white gold” to help babies in need—a generous act of love, care and community support. One mother’s abundance can become another baby’s lifeline.

From Holiday Hangover to a Gentle Fresh Start

A

fter weeks of sweets, extra cocktails, and irregular routines, it’s common to enter January feeling bloated, sluggish or mentally “off.” Instead of jumping into extreme detoxes or rapid-weight-loss plans, both of which can raise cortisol and make weight loss harder, a gentler, research-backed reset supports your body far more effectively. The gut microbiome is often called the body’s “second brain,” influencing digestion, immunity, energy and even mood. Studies show that increasing fiber-rich foods such as vegetables, legumes, whole grains and nuts can help rebalance gut bacteria after periods of overindulgence. Aim to add fiber in, rather than cutting foods out.

Anastasia Belousova/Pexels.com

Blood sugar balance is another key. A simple habit, such as taking a 10- to 20-minute walk after meals, can significantly improve post-meal blood glucose levels. This can ease cravings, support energy, and promote a stable mood. Lastly, resetting your circadian rhythm helps your metabolism recover. Consistent sleep and early-morning sunlight exposure help regulate hormones connected to hunger, fullness and stress. Instead of restriction, think restoration. Small, sustainable habits done consistently throughout January can help you feel lighter, clearer and more energized, without the crash of extreme dieting. Healing from the Inside Out Rebuilding Gut Health with Black Stuff by Erin Lehn Editor’s Note: After months of exploring this natural supplement for gut support, I wanted to share my personal experience—and give kudos to the passionate creator working to help people (and pets!) feel better from the inside out.

A

fter decades of navigating food sensitivities and digestive issues, I’ve tried just about everything in search of balance, including elimination diets, enzyme supplements, probiotics and more. But nothing quite prepared me for the subtle-yet-steady shifts I noticed after a few months of using Black Stuff.

Vegers describes it as a gentle restoration. “It’s doing its job step by step, reshaping and rebuilding the microbiome,” he says. And from my experience, that’s exactly how it feels. Not a quick fix, but a foundational shift—supporting digestion, easing discomfort, and slowly widening the range of foods my body can tolerate again.

Created by the team at GWS Biotec and led by Aivis Vegers, this small but mighty supplement blends humic and fulvic acids, polyphenols, lignin compounds and other nutrients sourced from pine bark and birch chaga—ingredients that have long supported soil vitality and offer similar nourishment to our own internal ecosystems.

Black Stuff isn’t marketed as a miracle cure, but rather as a return to biological basics. According to Vegers, our modern world has stripped essential minerals, microbes and nutrients from our soil—and by extension, our food. Industrialized farming, environmental toxins, and daily stress have taken their toll on gut health, immunity and energy levels.

“My biggest plus from taking Black Stuff,” I shared recently with our Natural Awakenings team, “is the ability to digest more foods, things I wouldn’t have dreamed of eating before. And from someone with a sensitive digestive system, that’s a huge win. It gives me peace of mind while traveling or eating food prepared by others—even if there’s some dairy or gluten involved.”

Black Stuff aims to replenish what’s been lost. Acting as a postbiotic compound, it nourishes the gut lining, supports cellular detoxification, and helps the body absorb nutrients more efficiently— without synthetic additives or preservatives. What strikes me most, though, is not just the product

Founder Aivis Vegers (standing in the middle) and the Black Stuff team

itself, but the heart behind the brand. Vegers and his team are incredibly responsive and kind. Their passion is rooted in a genuine mission to help people, and animals, feel better in a world where wellness often feels out of reach. In addition to their signature supplement, GWS Biotec offers other high-quality products such as DeParaTox (a natural parasite cleanse), OxiFit (a nitrate-rich beetroot powder), and a collagen-infused skin spray made with Black Stuff and natural plantbased surfactants that’s been getting buzz for its glow-boosting properties. While I recently took a detour from my guthealing regimen due to holiday indulgences, I’m eager to return to what’s been working— and for me, Black Stuff has earned its place in that routine. To learn more, visit Black-Stuff.com or connect with the team on Instagram and Facebook at @blackstuffworld.

s interest in health and wellness grows, more people are seeking medical models that go beyond symptom treatment and disease management. Integrative medicine has emerged as one such approach, blending conventional and complementary methods to address the health of the whole person. An integrative health approach offers a practical, evidenceinformed framework for personalized care. Its focus is shifting the conversation to prevention by cultivating holistic health that goes beyond the absence of disease.

Defining Integrative Medicine

on the whole person, is evidence based and draws on all appropriate therapies and lifestyle approaches that promote optimal health and healing. Brent Bauer, M.D., a professor of medicine and the research chair for Mayo Clinic Integrative Medicine and Health, describes it as “bringing the best of both conventional and evidence-based complementary therapies together to optimally meet the needs of the patient. We simply ask, what is the best therapy for the individual patient? That gets us back to what I would think of as plain old good medicine.”

The Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine & Health defines integrative medicine as a philosophy that emphasizes the practitioner-patient relationship, focuses

massage therapists or any number of specialized practitioners. “Integrative medicine is taking the best of what we call Western medicine and integrating it into what is practiced in other parts of the world to create a health plan where the patient is the focus,” says Hakima Amri, Ph.D., co-director of the integrative medicine and health sciences program at Georgetown University. These other medicine systems include Traditional Chinese Medicine, Indian Ayurveda, Unani-Tibb medicine, homeopathy and others.

The Whole-Person Mindset

Integrative medicine is about viewing patients holistically, considering all parts of their humanity. Rather than examining organs or systems in isolation, practitioners evaluate the multitude of factors that influence illness or well-being. It emphasizes disease prevention, resilience building and health restoration throughout the lifespan. “We bring a whole team of practitioners to work with the patient, to look at the patient as a whole and not only treat symptoms, but to truly heal the patient,” explains Amri. Whole-person health rests on five key principles: patient-centered, relationship-based care; personalized health plans; attention to physical, mental and spiritual well-being; prevention and self-responsibility; and collaboration across modalities and providers. It acknowledges the patient as being embedded in environmental, relational, emotional and spiritual contexts that each play a part.

Integrative Medicine in Practice

Bauer explains how an integrative approach might work for a surgery patient. “If they have pain, a conventional approach might include medications, physical therapy or perhaps an injection. As an integrative physician, I have an even larger toolkit with things such as acupuncture, tuina (a Chinese bodywork technique), massage, mind-body practices like yoga and meditation, herbs and supplements, and low-level laser therapy.” As the medical doctor leading the team, Bauer confers with other in-house practitioners to build a customized care plan. This expanded toolkit gives him a better chance of finding a therapy that not only works for the patient but also fits their personal preferences to optimize their quality of life.

Why Whole-Person Health Matters

“Chronic conditions are the biggest plight to humanity today. People are living with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, allergies, irritable bowel disorders and more,

often with multiple conditions at once,” says Amri. Chronic disease is now a leading health challenge in the United States, heavily impacting quality of life for many. One in four American adults lives with chronic pain. At the same time, the use of complementary and integrative approaches has risen sharply from 19.2 percent in 2002 to 36.7 percent in 2022, with increases in yoga and meditation leading the growth.

strong social and spiritual connections, and time in nature, finding these evidencebased habits to be not only restorative, but profoundly transformative.

“I think integrative medicine is an excellent approach for any patient,” says Bauer. “But I think it really shines when it comes to patients with chronic disease. By definition, most chronic illnesses are ones that conventional medicine cannot cure.” At the Mayo Clinic, he sees firsthand how integrative approaches can transform lives. He often introduces mindfulness and biofeedback-based meditation to help patients manage stress.

• Myth: Integrative medicine is exotic. People often think it is coming from elsewhere—other people’s traditions—and not our culture, yet many of the modalities were founded in the West, including naturopathy, chiropractic, osteopathy and homeopathy, notes Amri.

Beyond symptom relief, Bauer emphasizes a comprehensive lifestyle framework rooted in integrative principles that include balanced nutrition, regular exercise, daily mind-body practice, restorative sleep,

Misconceptions and Skepticism

When it comes to innovative healing philosophies, myths abound. Here are some common misconceptions about integrative medicine.

• Myth: Integrative is the same as alternative. Integrative medicine is not alternative medicine. Alternative therapies replace conventional care, often without scientific evidence, while integrative medicine combines evidence-based approaches for positive outcomes.

• Myth: There is little scientific evidence. According to Amri, the assumption that there is no scientific evidence to support the use of integrative medicine is 30 years out of date. Today, almost every major healing modality has been studied. Bauer highlights the scale of research, pointing to the Mayo Clinic Integrative Medicine program, which has published more than 600 peer-reviewed manuscripts covering hundreds of clinical trials over three decades showing the benefits of massage, acupuncture and mind-body practices.

Communicating With Healthcare Providers

Although one-third of adults report using complementary and integrative medicine modalities, at least 42 percent of users do not disclose their integrative therapy usage to their doctor. This nondisclosure can be dangerous, as many integrative modalities can potentially interact with medications or chronic conditions. Amri offers an example: “Ginkgo biloba is good for improving memory, but it is also

a blood thinner. If someone is on prescription blood thinners, it could cause serious complications.” Many herbs and supplements can interact with prescription medications and preexisting conditions, so it is very important to establish an open and honest dialogue with healthcare providers. To facilitate good conversations, Amri advises patients to be open and well-prepared. She encourages patients to bring their research materials with them to their appointments: “Do your research ahead of time,” she says. “If there are papers or studies you find interesting, take them with you and share them with your doctor. Be prepared and explain why you want to try certain therapies.” “Physicians can do their part by listening carefully and by honestly acknowledging where their knowledge base might be limited,” says Bauer. “This is a great time for them to reach out to their integrative medicine colleagues and have them provide guidance to help meet the patient’s needs with evidence-based approaches.”

Looking Ahead

Despite the growth in integrative medicine, key barriers remain. Bauer points to insurance as the biggest gap, explaining, “Very few of these evidence-based, helpful, costavoiding therapies are covered by payers. My hope is that we see that change significantly in the immediate future. In a fiveto-ten-year time frame, I think we’ll simply drop all the labels and call it good medicine.” Amri also sees the field evolving quickly. “We’ve been training a whole generation of researchers that look at things differently,” she remarks, adding that policy reform and adequate reimbursements are essential to making integrative care more accessible. Integrative medicine brings together evidence, empathy and empowerment, uniting the best of conventional, traditional and complementary approaches. It emphasizes collaboration between patients and providers, shared responsibility for wellness and a comprehensive focus on the whole person. By bridging therapies, fostering dialogue and addressing chronic disease with both science

Methods-of-Care Glossary by Hannah Tytus • Conventional medicine (also Western, biomedicine or allopathic medicine) is mainstream medicine that relies on the scientific method and considers the body as divisible into discrete and measurable parts. From primary care physicians to pediatricians and dentists, most medical doctors provide this type of care. In emergency rooms and urgent care facilities, conventional practitioners offer critical, lifesaving measures every day. • Complementary medicine involves medical techniques used alongside conventional standard of care. For example, acupuncture can be used as a way to ease the side effects of chemotherapy. Under this model, the various practitioners do not work together as a team to coordinate care plans. • Alternative medicine includes medical modalities used in place of conventional care, often lacking evidence and not recommended by science professionals. For example, forgoing chemotherapy in favor of herbal remedies is considered alternative and is not recommended by most health professionals. • Integrative medicine is a coordinated, multimodal approach combining both conventional and non-conventional therapies that have been supported by evidence. For example, integrating chemotherapy, medical massage and acupuncture under one roof allows practitioners to collaborate on a patient’s progress and share treatment strategies.

Intergenerational Living A Healing Model for Families and Communities by Hannah Tytus

Aflo Images from Aflo/CanvaPro

Paso, Texas, views intergenerational living as a response to systemic strain and a necessity for mutual care. “The benefit is that you have more support—someone who can help you out,” she explains. “If your child is sick, someone can call and advocate for you. Someone can take your parent to an appointment. In this economy, living together is going to make more and more sense.”

D

octor of Natural Medicine Sofia Chavez, a curandera, or traditional healer, reflects on her vibrant upbringing in New Mexico. “I grew up with Native American, Latinx, Mexica, Navajo, and Apache family—the blended people and traditions of New Mexico,” she recalls. “I spent a lot of time with my great-grandparents. The tradition was to let your hair grow long, and I remember how my great-grandfather would sit on the front porch with me and braid my hair.” This early immersion in family, ceremony and the rhythms of the land shaped Chavez’s lifelong path of healing. After moving across the country and starting her own family, Chavez returned to visit her mother’s New Mexico ranch with a 5-year-old daughter. The visit was joyful, but Chavez was struck by the fact that her daughter barely knew her grandmother, seeing her as a kind stranger rather than a close

relation. “My children didn’t experience grandparents the way I did, didn’t know them as I did, and this is how language, culture and ceremony become lost,” she laments. The daily sharing of customs and storytelling that Chavez valued so highly growing up with her grandparents was possible only because of their proximity. Today, her daughter is all grown up and has children of her own. To preserve the family heritage, Chavez once again lives in a mixedgeneration home, allowing her to share important values and traditions with her grandchildren. This is reflective of a larger trend as multigenerational households are on the rise again after having declined in the mid-20th century.

Adapting to Shifting Trends

Ginger Raya, Ed.D., a healthcare executive, educator, speaker and executive coach in El NaturalAwakeningsNY.com

Chavez points out, “During the 1950s through the 1990s, there was such an emphasis on doing things on your own, driven by prosperity. In that independence, we forgot that we need each other. Now the cycle continues, and our world is flowing into different times. We’re remembering that we need one another.” Within her cultural beliefs, which view the world as inherently cyclical and relational, this shift is part of a larger pattern. “We’re living in these cycles of life,” Chavez says. “If we’re going to reclaim our joy and optimism, we have to move forward with it together.” Raya acknowledges that while families are remembering the value of connection, they are also confronting long-held cultural stigmas. “We carry unnecessary shame about aging and dependence,” Raya says, adding that increasing dependence with age is a natural part of life. “Why not embrace intergenerational living?”

Leading a Richer Life

Chavez passes down her way of life through small moments, as her great-grandparents did. “I take my grandchild outside so she can hear me as I do my sun salutations,” she says. “We go to the trees so she can touch the leaves and the bark. My hope is that by

being present with me—hearing our prayers and gratitude for food, for nature, for connection—she’ll absorb it. By watching me simply being myself, talking to the earth and the plants, I hope her life will be richer, more vibrant.” Shared living isn’t all harmony. “Sometimes we need our personal, private cave time,” says Chavez, noting that sacred moments of stillness and connection to both nature and spirit are essential for maintaining our equanimity. By honoring this recharge time in ourselves and others, we create the conditions for greater harmony within the household. At the same time, balance and flexibility are also important; Chavez may miss a morning ritual or two if her grandchild is sick or her daughter needs her. It is a reminder that honoring both structure and spontaneity allows intergenerational life to flow more naturally.

Listening Deeply

“When we live together, there are simply more possibilities to talk, to listen, to grow and to connect. By being in environments of togetherness more often, you have more chances to really learn how to listen—far more than when you see each other only a few times a year,” says Chavez. Interpersonal disagreements or “growing pains” can be navigated with a facilitator. In her culture, pláticas—heartfelt, empathetic conversations—are treasured and integral to ceremonies, including the sacred sweat lodge, where a medicine person facilitates emotional and relational healing through an environment of warmth and song. In other communities, therapy together can help ease tensions and build bridges. Intergenerational living presents challenges but also offers connection, learning and wisdom across generations. For Chavez, “Traditions are a beautiful way to share our love.” Hannah Tytus is an integrative health coach, researcher and content creator at KnoWEwell, P.B.C., and former writer at the National Institutes of Health.

The Fellowship Community A Living Model of Intergenerational Care Nestled on 80 acres of forests, fields and biodynamic farmland in Chestnut Ridge, New York, The Fellowship Community offers a holistic, human-centered approach to elder care rooted in the spiritual philosophy of Anthroposophy. Founded in 1966 by physician Paul Scharff and his wife, Ann, the Fellowship was created in response to a growing concern that elder care was becoming increasingly routinized and impersonal. More than five decades later, it remains a vibrant, work-based, intergenerational community where elders are supported as whole human beings—body, soul and spirit. Approximately 140 elder members, coworkers and their children live together on the rural campus, located about 30 miles northwest of New York City. The community blends independent living, meaningful work and shared cultural life to create an environment where elders feel valued, purposeful and deeply connected. A range of living options, including independent apartments, studios and private rooms with individualized support, allowss members to age in place with dignity and continuity of care. Daily life at the Fellowship is rich with opportunity. Residents enjoy nourishing meals, therapeutic and medical services, and a lively cultural calendar that includes movement classes, music, films, lectures, study groups and seasonal celebrations. Lifelong learning is woven into the rhythm of the community, with hands-on experiences in speech arts, painting, pottery, woodworking, weaving, baking and biodynamic farming. Intergenerational collaboration is central, with young and old working, learning and growing together in service to one another and to the land.

Fellowship residents

“Our approach to elder care is deeply relational,” says Mia Bieber, admissions manager at Rudolf Steiner Fellowship Foundation, the nonprofit that oversees the community. “We believe it should foster joy, belonging and continued development. Here, the wisdom of the elders and the striving of the young meet in a way that enriches everyone.” Guided by a mission to cultivate a social process worthy of our common humanity, the Fellowship emphasizes individualized care, meaningful work, continuing education and responsible stewardship of the earth. Biodynamic agriculture, cooperation with neighboring institutions of the Threefold Community, and a commitment to social renewal through equality, economic brotherhood and cultural freedom are integral to its vision. The Fellowship continues to expand its legacy as a living model of intergenerational care—one that supports purpose, connection and growth throughout all phases of life. Mind Matters Uncovering the Root Causes of Anxiety and Depression in Young Adults

O

Kindel Media/Pexels.com

by Dr. David Pollack

ver my 17 years in practice, I’ve witnessed a dramatic shift in the average age of my patients. A decade ago, most of my clientele were 50 and older. However, in the past five years, I’ve seen a significant increase in patients in their teens and twenties.

One of the most concerning trends I see in this younger population is the quick prescription of anti-anxiety and antidepressant medications. When these patients come to my office, I always ask: What kind of blood testing have you had to rule out underlying chemical or metabolic imbalances that could be contributing to your symptoms? More often than not, the answer is little to none. There are numerous factors that can either contribute to or even fully explain anxiety and depression— yet, they often go unexamined. Let’s explore some of the most common ones.

The Gut-Brain Connection

One of the most frequent health issues I see in young adults struggling with anxiety and depression is chronic digestive dysfunction. The gut and brain are deeply interconnected for several reasons:

percent of the body’s total neurotransmitters, including serotonin and dopamine. If gut health is compromised, neurotransmitter balance can be disrupted, affecting mood and mental well-being. 2. Nutrient Absorption – Many young adults experience dietary shifts and absorption issues that prevent essential nutrients from reaching their cells. Carbohydrates, which are often overconsumed, can increase cortisol levels, exacerbating anxiety. Meanwhile, proteins and healthy fats are often lacking. 3. Chronic Discomfort – Persistent digestive discomfort can act as a constant source of stress. This ongoing irritation keeps the body in a state of tension, which can perpetuate anxiety symptoms.

Hormonal Imbalances

Beyond digestion, I often investigate hormonal health. A thorough thyroid assessment is crucial, yet many conventional doctors perform only basic screenings, such as TSH and T4 tests. While these are a starting point, additional tests—T3, thyroid peroxidase antibodies, and thyroglobulin antibodies—are essential. In some cases, standard thyroid hormone levels may appear normal, but elevated antibodies reveal an underlying issue that can contribute to anxiety and depression.

1. Neurotransmitter Production – The digestive system produces approximately 70

Cortisol and reproductive hormones also play a significant role. Chronic stress depletes cortisol, which in turn affects estrogen and testosterone production. For women, irregular menstrual cycles, excessive or scanty bleeding, and severe cramps

22

NaturalAwakeningsNY.com

can signal hormonal imbalances. For men, libido issues and persistent skin problems are common indicators, though blood work is often needed to confirm imbalances.

Neurotransmitter Levels

Lastly, we must consider neurotransmitter balance itself—particularly serotonin, the primary target of most anti-anxiety and antidepressant medications. Yet, many patients have never had their serotonin levels tested before being prescribed medication. If serotonin is low, these drugs may be beneficial, but if levels are normal or high, they likely won’t help and may even cause unwanted side effects. A safer, more natural approach is to provide the body with serotonin precursors, allowing it to regulate its own balance rather than relying on medication. However, in many cases, when we optimize digestion and balance hormones, neurotransmitter levels correct themselves naturally.

A Comprehensive Approach

Beyond the factors mentioned above, numerous other issues can contribute to anxiety and depression in young adults, including eye movement and tracking disorders, pelvic and tailbone misalignment, sinus congestion, liver and kidney dysfunction, rib cage restrictions and sympathetic nervous system overstimulation. The good news? These issues can often be quickly, safely and effectively addressed— sometimes in a matter of weeks, or even overnight. It is an honor to help young people transform their lives through targeted, holistic care. By identifying and correcting the root causes of their symptoms, we empower them to reclaim their health and wellbeing—without unnecessary medications or lifelong dependency on pharmaceuticals. on Conquering Candida by Sandra Yeyati Candida is a type of yeast that can live on the skin and in the body without causing problems, but an overgrowth can lead to an infection called candidiasis, also known as a yeast infection, which can range from mild to severe and affect various parts of the body.

What is a candida overgrowth?

ean Mitchell, M.D., is a boardcertified immunologist and a pioneer in holistic immunology. New York City – Long Island

A healthy microbiome is diverse, with all kinds of different bacteria, viruses and yeast, whereas an unhealthy microbiome is distorted because the good bacteria have been wiped out, leaving candida, a highly resistant organism, as the dominant species. A candida overgrowth occurs when candida yeast microorganisms predominate, affecting the microbiome and resulting in a range of unpleasant symptoms.

What are the most prevalent symptoms of a candida overgrowth? After treating thousands of patients, I have categorized symptoms into four distinct levels. The initial stage manifests as gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating, constipation or diarrhea. The next stage involves leaky gut syndrome, where the yeast moves out of the intestine. This phenomenon is particularly prevalent in women who develop chronic vaginal yeast infections. The third stage of candida overgrowth occurs when the candida penetrates NaturalAwakeningsNY.com

What causes an overgrowth of candida?

Long-term use of antibiotics, proton pump inhibitors or acid blockers, birth control pills and even steroids—including the ones you inhale or take orally—can disrupt the natural balance of the gut microbiome, leading to candida overgrowth. The other big culprit is excessive glucose intake. Disruptions in the endocrine system can also lead to candida problems. That includes people with diabetes, metabolic syndrome or polycystic ovarian syndrome who tend to have high insulin and high blood sugar levels. And when you’re under a lot of stress, your cortisol levels go up as a defense reaction, which can also increase blood sugar levels and precipitate a candida imbalance.

In your 30-day candida protocol, what dietary changes do you recommend?

deeper into the body, leading to symptoms like brain fog. This occurs because excessive yeast production generates acetaldehyde, a substance that can cause cognitive impairment. The fourth stage is when the candida becomes deeply ingrained, resulting in chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and widespread muscle pain.

Initially, avoid processed sugar, dairy (including cheese and yogurt), grains (especially wheat-based), fermented foods and alcohol. You can consume fiberrich foods, which benefit your microbiome. Apples and berries are good, but avoid very sweet fruits like watermelon, cantaloupe or pineapple. Include a variety of vegetables, especially cruciferous ones and greens, but avoid corn (too sugary)

What about the next prong of your treatment—the antifungal medications?

There is a big misunderstanding about the dangers of antifungals, even among some doctors. From my experience, they tend to be very safe medications. Several FDA-approved options work very well. Patients typically require a minimum of three to four weeks of treatment, with some needing more, potentially extending to several months, to eradicate candida when it has deeply infiltrated the tissue.

What type of supplementation do you recommend?

I have patients come in, especially when I’m prescribing the antifungals, for intravenous vitamin therapy known as the Myers’ cocktail, comprised of B-complex vitamins, magnesium, vitamins C and D3, plus the antioxidant glutathione. People who are having medical issues like candida need extra support. Intravenous vitamins also mitigate the Herxheimer reaction, a flu-like response that occurs when candida begins to die off and releases toxins, triggering an immune response.

Could you explain the sublingual immunotherapy drops included in your protocol?

Following my treatment with strong antifungals, the idea is to administer a little bit of candida in the form of sublingual drops to stimulate the body’s own immunity and build up a tolerance. This approach aims to empower the body to effectively manage candida without the reliance on future antifungal interventions. Essentially, it involves stimulating protective antibodies to keep the candida in check. Sandra Yeyati is national editor of Natural Awakenings.

From digestion to mood, every system is interconnected in subtle ways that influence how animals feel and behave. Understanding and supporting these connections allows pets to experience more ease, energy and joy in everyday life. An integrative, energybased approach views animal companions as complete physical, emotional and energetic beings, combining modern veterinary science with natural healing strategies to restore balance and connection.

for the child that made the soup healing,” he says, encouraging pet parents to use the same “energy of gratitude” when preparing their food.

adding that conventional veterinary medicine often focuses on individual parts of a pet’s body, whereas a holistic approach includes balanced nutrition, daily movement, emotional connection and a healthy home environment to build lasting vitality.

Clean Nutrition and Proper Hydration

“Holism means that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Our pets are more than their bodies made up of tissues and cells, so a holistic approach looks at the bigger picture,” says Dennis W. Thomas, a holistic veterinarian and author of Whole-Pet Healing,

Nutrition is the foundation for vitality, and a pet’s food should nourish, not burden, the body. Whole-pet wellness begins with clean, fresh ingredients and balanced hydration. “We must always look for the best guidance as to how to keep the physical body healthy with proper nutrition,” says Thomas, noting that food is more than just ingredients; it also carries energy and intention. “People were always looking for the right ingredients, hoping to get the same results, without realizing it was the love Grandma had

Dr. Chris Bessent, a holistic veterinarian and founder of Herbsmith and Medicus Veterinary Diets, stresses the importance of feeding pets whole foods, defined as “real, unprocessed ingredients, not byproducts or powders, but complete, natural foods that retain their original nutrients.” Whole-food meals combine fresh meats, organs, fruits and vegetables—for example, chicken, liver, blueberries and sweet potatoes—to create balanced nutrition. Hydration is equally important for overall wellness. Pets thrive with constant access to clean, filtered water and moisture-rich foods. Adequate hydration supports digestion, circulation and temperature regulation; flushes toxins; and maintains healthy skin and joints.

Daily Movement and Play

Exercise keeps pets strong, alert and emotionally balanced. Movement promotes flexibility and joint health, as well as behavioral stability. “Exercise is a form of self-care for dogs. It keeps their bodies strong, minds sharp and emotions balanced,” says Denise Bozenski, a holistic pet health coach, professional dog trainer and certified canine fitness coach based in Phoenix, Arizona. “It’s not about intensity; it’s about consistency, connection and engaging both body and mind.”

Bozenski explains that gentle, consistent activity such as walks, swimming and play reduce anxiety and prevent stiffness. Regular movement supports joint health, cardiovascular strength and a healthy weight, as well as providing essential mental stimulation. Dogs are natural explorers that find purpose through activity and engagement with their environment. Regular movement improves behavior. For senior dogs, staying active preserves mobility, comfort and confidence.

Supporting Pets’ Emotional and Energetic Health

Pets feel deeply, and their emotions directly affect their health and behavior. A 2024 review in the journal Animals reports that various stressors and emotional imbalance can trigger abnormal levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which in turn influences a dog’s behavior and physical state. Emotional balance centers on trust, calm connection and stability. To support this connection, pet parents should focus on creating calm, loving routines, speaking gently and spending unhurried time together. Equally important,

creating a safe, toxin-free environment helps pets feel secure. The bond between humans and pets operates on an energetic level, too. Thomas advises, “Where two energetic beings spend a lot of time together, the energy seeks harmony and the two energies become one.” He calls this “quantum entanglement”, noting that pets often share their higher energy with humans, lifting us up, but sometimes absorbing our stress in return. Because pets mirror the energy around them, calm, gratitude and presence at home are essential. Supporting whole-pet wellness involves more than keeping animals healthy; it’s about nurturing balance in every part of their lives. When pet parents meet their pets’ physical, emotional and energetic needs, they build a foundation for lasting vitality and trust.
