"Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.” ~ Albert Einstein
“There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature—the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.”
~ Rachel Carson
Both of the above quotes resonate with me this month. Spring has sprung, and we celebrate by attending Earth Day Festivals in April. Mark your calendar for Saturday, April 20 (10a-6p) for the largest festival: Central Florida Earth Day held at Lake Eola/Dwntn Orlando. Next, on Saturday, April 27 (10a-3p) will be the 2nd largest celebration: Earth Fest at Lake Concord Park/Casselberry. (See page 9 for details.) As Sponsors for both events, Natural Awakenings staff will be there with many eco-friendly items and to meet new friends. Be sure to introduce yourself!
During these stressful times, it is easy to get caught up worrying about the unknown. Instead, let’s focus on what we do know. With inflation and food shortages, this is the time to reevaluate where you spend your hard-earned money. Farmers markets and gardening centers continue to be my happy “goto” places. Local markets offer festive settings to purchase the freshest produce—and a fun place to meet like-minded friends. In addition, the markets boost local economies and reduce our carbon footprint. I like to follow the “100-Mile Diet” guidelines which encourage seasonal fare. Luckily we, Central Floridians, can eat a vast array of food grown close to home.

Biophilic Design Tips with Sharon Kurtz
Biophilic design refers to the incorporation of plants and the thoughtful arrangement of greenery within spaces, integrating nature into our living spaces and establishing a tangible link to the outside world.
Introducing nature into indoor environments can positively influence the nervous system, reducing stress and enhancing clarity, thereby improving overall well-being.
Plants positively affect all five senses, improve air quality, and influence the way we perceive light. Biophilic design also offers mental health benefits, impacting cognitive, physiological and psychological aspects. It aids emotional and cognitive responses, helps manage stress and navigates moods and emotions. Blood pressure, cortisol levels, and other stress-related factors can also be reduced.
“While biophilic design goes beyond merely placing a plant in a corner, it ultimately aims to establish a healthy, inspiring space for everyone,” shares Sharon Kurtz. She can help you select plants you can care for and ensure that your home meets their needs, including adequate lighting and humidity.
By taking a few moments each day (or week) for care, you can enjoy a meaningful pause in your routine. Sharon Kurtz is the owner/ founder of Organique Design, a residential interior design and art studio in Orlando. Let her help turn your home into a healthy haven! Visit www.organique-design.com or call 407-494-3619 to schedule a consultation.

New Way to Diagnose Autism
According to a 2023 study by Yale scientists published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, two distinct neurodevelopmental abnormalities that arise shortly after the start of brain development have been linked to the emergence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The researchers created brain organoids using stem cells from 13 boys with the disorder, including eight with macrocephaly, a condition in which the head is enlarged. The organoids were small replicas of developing brains that mimicked neuronal growth in the fetus.
The study found that children with ASD and macrocephaly showed an excessive growth of excitatory neurons, while those without macrocephaly exhibited a deficit of the same type of neurons. Measuring the prevalence of certain types of neurons, as was done in this study, could help doctors diagnose autism and also identify which autism cases might benefit from existing drugs that treat excessive excitatory neuron activity.
County Declares Loneliness a Public Health Crisis
San Mateo County near San Francisco is the first county in the U.S. to declare loneliness a public health crisis. The resolution, which commits the county to address the issue but does not set aside funds to reduce loneliness, was inspired by the United Kingdom and Japan, which appointed ministers to tackle the problem. Future efforts by San Mateo County may include investments in infrastructure to make neighborhoods more accessible, social media posts that encourage social interaction, and the earmarking of community mental health dollars for organizations that develop or offer solutions.
Loneliness has been associated with increased risk of dementia, depression, anxiety, heart disease and stroke. A British study found that those that lived alone and had no visitors had a 39 percent increased risk of premature death compared to those visited by loved ones daily.

Heal-Our-World Checklist
Our current systems and practices are depleting the Earth’s resources at an increasing rate well beyond its capacity to renew itself. According to the World Wildlife Fund, it takes a year-and-a-half to generate the resources we use in one year. That’s an unsustainable path for the planet’s future. The world needs topsoil to grow 95 percent of its food, and yet the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimated in 2019 that 90 percent of the Earth’s topsoil is likely to be at risk by 2050. Such statistics seem daunting, but if each of us reduces their individual ecological footprint, together we can make a difference. Here is an action checklist. Consult it often and complete one action at a time. Think of incremental change as hope.

The Brain’s Hope for Children with ADD and ADHD
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit
Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are prevalent challenges among children, impacting their academic performance, social interactions, and overall wellbeing. While medication or various supplements are typically prescribed to manage symptoms, these often produce unwanted side-effects and long-term dependencies. So, many parents seek alternative approaches that address the root cause of these challenges.
Neuroscience has extensively studied and clearly documented an attribute of the brain that is now called “neuroplasticity.” That is the ability of the brain to “re-wire” itself. This innate ability enables a stunning variety of ways that the brain can address issues, including those that can cause ADD and ADHD. But sometimes the brain needs help simply to “see” the ways in which it is not performing as designed.
One promising modality to help the brain leverage this “plasticity” is Cereset, a patented, non-invasive neuromodulation technology that facilitates relaxation, harmony, and balance within the brain. Unlike other
brain-focused approaches, Cereset doesn’t “train” or guide the brain chemically, organically, electrically, or magnetically. It enables the brain to be its own guide! It provides the brain with a precise, real-time “acoustic mirror” by translating the brain’s rhythms into pleasant tones the child hears through earbuds. This “mirror” enables the brain to see its issues clearly so that it can autonomously and interactively balance and harmonize on its own terms, without external guidance. Each brain, given the right information, precisely and in real-time, makes its own best decisions.
By providing the brain with accurate feedback, Cereset assists in promoting a state of calm and stability, aiding children in regulating their attention, mood, and behavior. A brain that is harmonized and balanced enables improved cognitive function, memory, and emotional regulation, along with a sense of peace, resulting in better performance in academic and social settings.
Children as young as 5 years old have experienced significant improvement in how they experience themselves and others. And they enjoy the process, as they simply sit in a zero-gravity chair, listening to their “brain’s music” (as one child described it). There is no physical or mental exercise regimen, no meditation, no special diet, no effort!
Most children see results within 3-6 weeks, after just 5 sessions of 60-90 minutes each. And with a few more sessions, children are often able (under the guidance of their doctor) to taper off completely from the medications they had come to depend on just to get through the day.
Importantly, Cereset offers a holistic approach to managing ADD and ADHD symptoms, addressing underlying imbalances in brain function rather than simply masking them with medication and supplements.
With its potential to reduce reliance on medication and support long-term brain health, Cereset holds promise as a valuable tool in the holistic treatment of ADD and ADHD in children.
You can learn more about Cereset at www.cereset.com , and you can call or text Bart Johnson, owner, at 407-775-2600 to book an Introductory Session. Location: 1971 Lee Rd., Winter Park.
Easy Health Commitments with Big Payoffs
It’s April…how are those New Year’s resolutions coming along? Are you still on track, or did all the wheels fall off right around the Superbowl? Let’s face it, we all need some “tough love” when it comes to our health commitments. There is no magic bullet, the easy way out is generally the wrong way, and quick fixes never stand the test of time. Here are some tips to help you improve your health every day. They are easy, tiny commitments that add up!
First, Let Food Be Thy Medicine
As
Eat more non-starchy vegetables –Eating more healthfully usually includes more fresh veggies, but don’t make the mistake of gravitating towards the calorie-packed, easy-to-overeat variety like potatoes, beans and corn. Tortilla chips are not a vegetable! Make sure half your plate includes fiber- and nutrient-dense veggies like broccoli, cauliflower and leafy greens. They also contain a lot of water and help keep you hydrated. Try new veggies instead of eating the same ones all the time. For example, if you like spicy foods like wasabi, try radishes; they have a zesty zing you may enjoy! This simple adjustment can help you lose weight without counting calories. Easy peasy!
Eat whole fruits –Fruits eaten in their whole form (including the peel if edible) provide water, fiber, vitamins, minerals and polyphenols, which act as antioxidants. Antioxidants help your body quell inflammation, which contributes to heart disease, diabetes, cancer and other health issues. Berries, apples, kiwis, peaches and citrus are just a few low-sugar fruits you can start adding to your cart.
Avoid sweetened drinks and artificial sugar substitutes –
consume a lot of sugar fast when it’s in liquid form. We’re talking about those large coffee drinks, juices, sodas, iced teas, energy drinks, sports drinks and even some flavored waters. For example, a 12-oz can of soda contains 39 grams of sugar…that’s 10 teaspoons! And if you think “diet” versions are better, research has shown that artificial sweeteners (which are chemicals) make you more likely to overeat and are not necessarily healthier for your heart.
Sweat, But Don’t Stress
Find exercise you like –Everyone knows “sitting is the new smoking” and that living a sedentary lifestyle is bad for your health. If you hate working out at a gym, find some activity that you enjoy and start doing it regularly. Taking a walking break during the day, taking the stairs, busting out a few squats while you’re watching TV, using a stand-up desk or just parking farther away from the store all add up. Your future body will thank you!
It’s called beauty sleep for a reason – Let’s face it, how good do you look when you’re suffering from sleep deprivation? Better yet, how well do you think? Research has shown that chronic sleep loss puts you at more risk for heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Some solutions to promote sound snoozing are: going to bed at the same time every day (this trains your internal clock), turning off electronics an hour before bed, not eating at least three hours before bed and setting a cooler temperature in your house at bedtime. If you’ve done some exercise during the day this often helps with sleep later, too.
Find ways to alleviate stress –When you’re stressed, your body can’t digest or sleep well, so this tip complements our previous points. The time you carve out to meditate, pray, play with your pets or work at a hobby will deliver returns of more productivity later. Your life is busy— you don’t have time to neglect your need to recharge! By the way, salt therapy has a relaxing effect on the nervous system and promotes an overall feeling of wellbeing—so come and see us!
We hope these easy health commitments help you maintain habits to improve your health all year long, regardless of trends, fads and the occasional New Year’s resolution. Good foundational habits will help your body maintain its balance and state of wellbeing naturally, just as it was created to do.

Relief for Parkinson’s Patients
How Traditional and Complementary Interventions
Can Help
by Madiha Saeed, M.D.
According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, more than 10 million people worldwide and nearly 1 million Americans are living with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Every year, nearly 90,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with this ailment, which causes the gradual loss of dopamine-producing neurons in the brain. Symptoms that develop slowly over years include tremors;
stiff muscles; a slow, shuffling gait; and difficulties with movement and speech. There is no cure for PD, and by the time a patient is diagnosed, they may have already lost 60 to 80 percent of their dopamine-producing cells. According to Kenneth Sharlin, a board-certified neurologist and certified functional medicine doctor, the first line of defense for PD is levodopa (L-Dopa), a pharmaceutical
that is converted to dopamine in the body. “Unfortunately, natural strategies don’t get a lot of research, so no supplement has been shown to effectively treat the disease,” he asserts. “Mucuna pruriens, a tropical legume that grows in Africa, Asia and the Pacific Islands, naturally contains levodopa, but studies have shown it to be unreliable.”
Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that plays a role in controlling memory, mood, sleep, learning, concentration and movement. “If the car doesn’t have gas, then you can’t drive it,” explains Sharlin. Once a patient is taking levodopa to bring dopamine levels up, complementary strategies can be employed to help manage PD symptoms by as much as 73 percent, according to a panel of doctors participating in The Parkinson’s Solutions Summit. Exercise, sleep and even intimacy with a partner can all be managed well once the car has “gas” to drive it.
Exercise
According to Sharlin, the number one strategy for PD patients to maintain their motor function is exercise such as bicycling, chair yoga, movement classes in warm water pools, Pilates and dance. A meta-analysis published in Gerontology and Geriatrics analyzed 15 randomized controlled trials involving 498 participants in several countries to investigate the health impacts of self-directed physical activity (SDPA) on patients with early and mid-stage PD. The study examined the effects of moderateintensity exercises, including aerobics, dance, strength training, flexibility exercises and Nordic walking. The researchers found that the SDPA significantly enhanced gait function, balance, mobility, function and postural control.
Gut Health
Monitoring gut function is very important for patients with PD, as constipation is very common,” states Trupti Gokani, a board-certified neurologist, health and mindset coach, and Ayurvedic expert. Improving gut function with the help of key nutrients from vegetables, fruits, clean protein, nuts and seeds, olive oil, herbs and spices has been shown to slow the progression of the disease. It is best to choose organic when possible, as that will decrease the exposure to brain-toxic

chemicals. A gluten-free diet has also been found to improve PD symptoms.
Sharlin recommends an antioxidantrich diet packed with polyphenols, along with green tea that contains catechins called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a natural antioxidant with neuroprotective properties.
Stress Reduction
Anxiety linked to PD can worsen the symptoms,” Gokani points out. Chronic stress is a risk factor for PD, because it elevates the hormone cortisol, which can interfere with neuronal plasticity and damage dopamineproducing neurons in the brain.
Incorporating deep breathing, meditation and other relaxation techniques is integral to improving the patient’s quality of life. According to Sharlin, “Mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques to self-regulate have a positive impact in regulating Parkinsonism.”
New Test to Confirm Diagnosis
When a patient comes to his office exhibiting PD symptoms, Sharlin now has
a new way to confirm a PD diagnosis by taking a small tissue sample and sending it to the lab to look for a neural protein called alpha synuclein, which is associated with PD. In a 2023 National Institutes of Health study involving 428 people with PD and 120 control volunteers, this skin biopsy was found to be very accurate, with 92.7 percent sensitivity.
Deep Brain Stimulation
According to Sharlin, deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a well-researched and well-developed treatment for PD. The surgical therapy involves implanting electrodes within areas of the brain to interrupt irregular signals that cause movement-related symptoms. A 2019 retrospective study of 400 patients that underwent DBS implantation found that 75 percent of the participants felt the procedure provided symptom control.
Fo cused ultrasound is another PD tool, using ultrasound beams to destroy areas in the brain cells that are causing movement problems. This procedure is permanent and can be done on
only one side of the brain, so it helps symptoms on only one side of the body. Treatment to both sides could cause speech, swallowing or memory problems. Sharlin notes that the results from focused ultrasound are no better than DBS and involve more intense intervention. Also, not all Parkinson’s patients are good candidates for this procedure.

Emerging Trends in Fitness
The Latest From Workouts to Wearables
by Kimberly Whittle
Multiple studies report that an active lifestyle offers mental and physical benefits, as well as a longer healthspan. Workout strategies and fitness equipment are continually evolving to meet changing consumer interests, incorporate scientific discoveries and take advantage of technological advancements. Here is a look at the latest emerging trends in fitness.
In-Person Versus Online Fitness Programs
Connected fitness equipment that replicates the gym experience at home with online programs led by
professional trainers has experienced a downturn in sales since the end of the pandemic. Lululemon Studio Mirror went out of business and Peloton has lost 40 percent of its value. The financial struggles for connected fitness are expected to continue in 2024 as consumers seek in-person connections in the post-pandemic world. The International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association’s annual member survey reports a rise in gym and studio memberships and revenue across low-cost, luxury and boutique facilities; this upswing is expected to continue.
Advances in Technology
Wearable devices that track workouts, steps and active minutes, and use biosensors to monitor health data like heart rate, blood pressure and sleep patterns continue to be popular as their functionality expands. Enhancements to popular devices include Apple Watch’s ability to identify abnormal heart rhythms; Fitbit’s improved accuracy of health and fitness monitoring and storage software; and NADIX Activewear’s capability to tell if yoga moves are being performed properly.
Tech companies are expected to continue to improve the accuracy of their sensors, technology and connectivity, as wearables are part of a broader trend toward data-driven training. Real-time statistics like heart rate, velocity and speed can help individuals monitor the effort and intensity of workouts and help coaches tailor programs to each client, even in group settings. Companies like Meta and Les Mills are also expanding virtual reality for workout applications, allowing users to visit surreal locations for real fitness results without leaving home.
New Weight-Loss Drugs
A combination of aerobic exercise, strength training and diet can improve metabolic function, reduce body fat and increase the chances of maintaining a healthy weight. A new class of drugs called glucagon-like-peptide 1 (GLP-1) agonists, such as Ozempic and Trulicity, which have been used to treat Type 2 diabetes, also lead to weight loss and may improve heart health.
“This class of medications is not a replacement for exercise,” stresses Steven Masley, M.D., a physician, nutritionist and author of The 30-Day Heart TuneUp. “The drugs’ mechanisms of actions are very different; they are dramatically more expensive; and they have occasional worrisome side effects—in contrast with exercise that has multiple health benefits. Exercise does not just enhance weight loss and blood sugar control, it also improves brain function, helps you with sleep, reduces stress, strengthens bones,
improves intestinal function and improves mood. For those taking GLP-1 medications, the best results will occur when they are combined with exercise.”
Blending of Health, Wellness and Fitness
An emerging trend is the blurring of lines between health clinics and fitness centers. Some medical offices are adding personal trainers to their teams in order to complement the work of doctors and nurses, while fitness centers are acquiring or developing their own clinics to prescribe weight-loss drugs, hormone replacement protocols, integrative therapies and infrared sauna sessions. One such example is Life Time Fitness’ flagship health club in Minneapolis.
Strength Training Craze
Strength, or resistance, training continues to grow in popularity, especially among Generation Z-ers that love to post photos of their fit selves on social media and appreciate the science-based benefits, including muscle building, cardiovascular improvements, increased bone density, reduced body fat and stabilized joints.
A study of more than 400,000 people published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that those regularly practicing strength training along with aerobic exercise had a lower risk of death than those that performed only aerobic training. Another analysis from the same journal suggested that regular strength training was associated with a 10 to 17 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, lung cancer and overall mortality.
In response to this emerging trend, Nike has developed a new line of strength training equipment; Pure Barre launched Define, a low-impact class that incorporates heavier weights; and Orangetheory Fitness expanded its workout offerings to include strength training.
Fitness in the Workplace
Some companies recognize the benefits of offering employees access to fitness facilities and health education classes, which lower insurance costs and increase productivity and mental health. If changes advocated by an American College of Sports Medicine task force come to fruition, billings for services by fitness professionals would be covered by insurance.
Staying Active for Mental Health
In a Lyra Health survey of U.S. corporate employee benefit leaders, 95 percent of respondents said that mental health benefits are very important to prospective employees. Regular physical activity and exercise can boost mood and improve mental health, and individuals are increasingly recognizing their worth.

Pollinator Corridors
Tips to Reestablish Lost Habitats
by Kelcie Ottoes
Awell-known Chinese proverb says, “The flapping of the wings of a butterfly can be felt on the other side of the world,” poetically reminding us that small actions can produce large effects. When it comes to the world’s disappearing pollinators, the modest steps we take today can generate life-saving results tomorrow.
According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), “Pollinators provide vital benefits to people and wildlife, keeping animals and plants that we depend on thriving while bringing us food and supporting the economy.” Almost 90 percent of flowering plants depend entirely or in part on animal pollination, and yet, the FWS reports that pollinator populations are on the decline. One way to support these important species is to create a pollinator corridor—a pesticide-free, native-plant zone that provides food and shelter for indigenous pollinators.
The Pollinator’s Role
While the word pollinator may conjure up images of butterflies and bees, the category is
much broader and includes birds, bats, lizards, moths, flies, beetles, wasps and some small mammals. “Virtually every ecosystem on Earth that contains flowering plants depends on animal pollinators,” says Kim Eierman, author of The Pollinator Victory Garden: Win the War on Pollinator Decline with Ecological Gardening. “Many are keystone species in the ecosystems where they occur. If a keystone species becomes extinct or vanishes, that ecosystem fundamentally changes, and not for the better.”
From apples, melons and potatoes to almonds, coffee and cocoa, the food we eat is not available without pollination. Losing just one pollinator can have a significant impact. Without bees, fruit and nut trees produce fewer and smaller crops, if any. Of the top 100 edible flowering crops, 80 are pollinated by honeybees.
“Every ecosystem is dependent on pollinators to maintain healthy environmental balances in global food webs,” explains Jen McDonald, the founder of Garden Girls, a Houston-based company that designs and installs home landscapes. “Pollinators don’t
make food just for us, but also for livestock and virtually all other living things. Many plants that require pollination are also needed for shade habitats for birds, insects and small animals.”
Challenges Facing Pollinators
The decline in pollinators is attributed to a loss of feeding and nesting habitats that occurs when native plants are replaced by non-native grasses, farmlands and urban landscapes. Pesticides, chemicals, parasites, non-native species, new diseases and climate change are also modern-day threats. Monarch butterflies are considered vulnerable to extinction. Nearly one in four bees (347 native species) are at increased risk of extinction. More than half of the 154 North American bat species are at severe risk of population decline.
Designing a Pollinator Corridor
The good news is that when native plants are re-introduced, pollinators return.

“Abundant, diverse pollinators ensure fertile, resilient landscapes and secure food systems for communities, and backyard gardens can restore numbers that strengthen regional plant reproduction,” says Kiersten Rankel, a botanist for Greg, an app that helps people optimize their plant-growing efforts.
To get started, select a strip of land, rooftop, wall or yard that supports pollinators, including their migration, foraging and overwintering. Next, pick native and flowering plant species for the space. Perennials require less maintenance, as they come back each year. Start small. Even a few potted plants or a converted curb strip can have a big impact. Avoid using pesticides and herbicides. Beyond flowers, be sure to also include shrubs, twigs, rotting logs, branches, vines, ground cover and bare gravel. Determine if it is helpful or harmful to remove leaves from the ground in the fall and reduce or eliminate mowing practices, especially on roadsides or curbs.
To make a bigger impact, talk with neighbors and community members to create a larger corridor. Consider working with local schools, colleges, nature-focused nonprofits, government officials that oversee parks and city planning, nurseries and farmers. The more people that are involved and invested in the corridor, the higher the odds of its continuing success.
Create a map to see the full footprint of the corridor; fill any gaps and remove invasive plant species. Include a wide diversity of native plants to serve pollinators at each stage of their life cycles. The Wild Seed Project suggests having at least 10 pollinator-friendly plants to support them year-round with continuous blooms and shelter.
An example of a giant pollinator corridor is Project Wingspan, located in the Midwest and Great Lakes region. The people behind this program are striving to create 18,000 acres of high-quality habitat to support local wildlife and pollinators. Mutual Benefits of Walking the Dog
by Dr. Ruth Roberts, DVM, CVA, CVH, CVFT, NAN
The emotional bond between dogs and humans is a powerful force that extends beyond mere companionship. Known for their unwavering loyalty and intuitive understanding, dogs offer a source of comfort and emotional support. In return, the companionship and care provided by humans create a sense of security and happiness for their canine friends. The
seemingly ordinary act of dog walking can bring vitality and other benefits to those on both ends of the leash.
Emotional Health Benefits
Strengthening Bonds: In a study conducted at Manchester Metropolitan University, in England, researchers aimed to understand how humans and
their animal companions actively share spaces, specifically through the lens of walking experiences. The study called into question a common perception that humans always dominate, showing that during walks, power is negotiated through mutual interaction, disproving the idea that authority goes only one way. This understanding reveals the complex bond formed during walks, emphasizing that power is shared, adding to the special and mutually helpful connection between humans and their dogs.
Spending Time Together: Walking creates shared moments. Whether exploring familiar places or trying new routes, these shared experiences become lasting memories that make the connection between dogs and owners even stronger.
Communicating Nonverbally: While walking, owners and dogs interact without words. The leash becomes a kind of language, where owners express feelings and intentions through body language and energy, helping them understand each other better.
Fostering Trust: Walking builds trust and reliance. Dogs trust their owners to guide and protect them during walks, creating a sense of safety and mutual dependence, which deepens their bond.
Enjoying Quality Time and Affection: Walking is a time for closeness and affection. A simple pat, a gentle scratch or just being near each other during walks creates moments of connection that strengthen the emotional tie between dogs and their owners.
Physical Health Benefits
Physical Well-Being: The relationship between dogs and humans contributes significantly to the physical health of both parties. For Melissa Sherman, an animal communicator, energy healer and holistic pet health coach, a walk is more than just a routine. It is a holistic strategy to improve her pets’ well-being. Leading her pack of seven dogs through daily forest walks becomes a channel for physical vitality, mental engagement and emotional catharsis. Sherman’s insight reinforces the idea that regular nature walks contribute not only to the physical health but also to the overall happiness of both dogs and their human companions.
Exercise Opportunity: Regular activities like dog walks also provide valuable exercise for their human counterparts. Research published in The Gerontologist indicates that older adults that regularly walk their dogs are more likely to meet physical activity recommendations and exhibit greater functional ability compared to non-dog owners.
Cardiovascular Health: An assessment of studies and data by the American Heart Association concluded that dog ownership is likely linked to a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. This positive association is primarily attributed to the active practice of dog walking.
Quality-of-Life Benefits
Stress Reduction: Studies have shown that the presence of a dog can have a calming effect on humans, reducing stress levels and promoting overall mental wellbeing. The simple act of petting a dog releases feel-good hormones, creating a harmonious cycle of emotional support.
Increased Happiness: Dogs bring joy and a sense of purpose to human lives, particularly for those living alone or facing health challenges. The responsibilities of caring for a pet instill a routine and structure that contribute to an enhanced quality of life.
Unconditional Love and Companionship: Perhaps the most profound aspect of this bond is the unconditional love and companionship exchanged between dogs and
humans. Dogs are non-judgmental, offering a constant source of emotional support and companionship. In return, humans provide the care, attention and love that form the bedrock of this unique relationship.

Spending time outdoors is a valuable pastime for individuals in their golden years. Besides being exceedingly pleasurable, communing with nature, breathing fresh air, feeling the warmth of the sun or hearing birdsong can markedly improve a person’s physical, mental and emotional well-being. For seniors, exposure to green and blue spaces inspires a more active lifestyle that is both spiritually and socially engaged, thereby offsetting the challenges of chronic illness, disability and isolation. Whether playing Scrabble under the shade of a tree, strolling along the banks of a lake with friends or planting flowers and herbs in a raised garden bed, adding that outdoor element to any activity is a win-win.
Physical Rewards
A vigorous workout outside is not necessary to derive benefits. Fresh air boosts the immune system by increasing white blood cell production. Merely living near trees can extend a person’s lifespan by up to 12 years, according to a Harvard University
study of more than 100,000 women over an eight-year period. Another study of 350,000 people in Holland found that green spaces can improve overall health, reduce health complaints, lower the propensity for psychiatric illness and engender a general feeling of improved health.
“Exposure to natural light fosters the synthesis of vitamin D, which is crucial for bone health and mood regulation,” says Dr. Ryan Sultán, an assistant professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University.
“Participating in outdoor activities such as walking, gardening or simply enjoying nature contributes to improved physical fitness.”
Gardening improves physical strength, flexibility and overall health and quality of life. Older adults that regularly take walks report less pain and sleep problems compared to adults that don’t get outside every day. Nature also promotes healthier blood pressure, higher energy levels, lower heart rate, reduced stress, less chronic pain and a reduction of illnesses such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and respiratory issues.
Kirti Kalidas MD, ND Amar Kalidas DO Sara King DNP, ARNP, FNP-BC
Mental and Cognitive Improvements
Nature offers mental and cognitive benefits to seniors. While simply viewing pictures of natural settings can reduce mental fatigue, a walk outside offers a greater positive impact. A University of Michigan study found that spending time outdoors can enhance memory and attention span by up to 20 percent.
Forest bathing—a wilderness walk while engaging the senses— originated in Japan and has become increasingly popular with older populations. A study in Singapore found that seniors engaged in a horticulture program experienced improvements in sleep, cognitive function and psychological well-being, as well as a reduction in anxiety.
Older populations that engage in more strenuous activities like walking, biking or running in natural settings have a lower risk of mental health issues. Green and blue spaces foster feelings of renewal, restoration and spiritual connection, while physical activity in such settings enhances mood, reduces depression risks, lowers stress and improves cognitive function.
Emotional and Social Benefits
Loneliness and isolation greatly impact seniors, and social interactions outside can help alleviate some of this loneliness. Nature provides space for multi-generational social interaction and engagement, including planned activities with friends and family or impromptu gatherings with neighbors. Those with access to green space have a stronger sense of unity and belonging with their community.
“Mindful walking is a simple way to get started building a relationship with the outdoors and is conducive to experiencing nature in a positive way while being present,” says John Dattilo, Ph.D., a professor in leisure studies at Pennsylvania State University. “To do this, we pay attention to the environment and notice things through our senses. We focus on what we are grateful for, including our surroundings or other aspects of our life.”
Overcoming Barriers to Outdoor Engagement
The main barriers stopping seniors from getting outside are mobility limitations, accessibility issues and safety concerns. One study found reduced mobility was the primary factor limiting nature experiences for older populations. “If we have a fear of falling, then we reduce our movement. If we reduce our movement, then we are more likely to fall, and that spirals,” says Dattilo.
Caretakers can help by encouraging seniors to pick the activities they want to do, without stifling their interests. “If people pursue activities they have interest in, they are much more likely to experience leisure,” says Dattilo. “And leisure gives us meaning and purpose in life. It also helps us feel authentic. It’s not as much about recreational activity, and more about engagement.”
If seniors want to venture beyond their homes, choose accessible locations where there are paved paths, shelter and bathrooms. Come prepared for the activity. Dress comfortably, use mobility aids, apply sun protection and bring water and snacks. For those that are uncomfortable spending time in nature alone, invite others or join a senior-friendly program, class or event. If leaving the home or bed is no longer an option, give virtual reality a try, which has been shown to provide seniors with some of the benefits of the outdoors. There are many commercially available virtual reality applications such as Google Earth VR and Wander on Meta Quest.
