Floor Care Guide

A quick and easy guide to keeping your floor looking great throughout its lifetime.

Great floors are as easy as 1, 2, 3...

CERTIFIED LOW CHEMICAL EMMISSIONS

No mixing, no measuring, no mess. The Bona system offers a guide to dusting, cleaning, maintaining, and protecting your floors. Follow this three-step process to keep your floors looking great for a lifetime.

Dust

Remove dust and grit from the floor using a Bona electrostatic microfibre dusting cloth, or by gently vacuuming.

Clean

Lightly spray and wipe using the Bona Spray Mop with a microfibre cleaning pad. For stubborn spots, heel marks or sticky spills, spray and leave for a few moments before wiping.

Maintain

Maintain your floor to restore its shine and revive scratched or dull surfaces. Use Bona Timber Floor Refresher on timber floors, or Bona Hard Surface Floor Polish on hard-surface floors.

Please always visit nationaltiles.com.au/flooringresources for the most up-to-date version of our installation instructions, warranty, product catalogue, and care and maintenance guide as it may have been revised and updated.

Tips for Looking After Your Floor

Sensible, regular preventative maintenance will extend the time before refurbishment is necessary and keep your floor looking great.

• Install good-sized floor mats both inside and outside external doors to trap dirt and grit.

• Install felt protectors on the base of furniture legs.

• Dust, sweep, or vacuum floors regularly to remove grit that can cause microscratches in the floor’s surface.

• Remove spills immediately and spot-clean affected areas using a Bona Trigger Spray and a soft cloth. Never use household cleaners on finished timber or hard surface floors, as they may damage polyurethane finishes and make re-coating difficult. They can also dull and damage hard surface flooring.

• Clean the floor regularly using a Bona Spray Mop. Clean high-traffic areas, such as kitchens, more frequently. Never ‘wet mop’ a timber floor — too much water can cause damage. A light spray mist of a non-toxic cleaner, such as Bona Floor Cleaner, is all that’s necessary.

• Use mats or rugs in heavily trafficked areas, such as entrance halls and kitchens, to reduce surface wear. These should be permeable to allow the floor to ‘breathe’.

• Avoid creating indentations in the floor — common causes include stiletto heels and pet claws.

• Use a floor refresher or polish, such as Bona Timber Floor Refresher or Bona Hard Surface Floor Polish, if your floor starts to lose its sheen. This will revive surfaces, restore a freshly finished look, and provide continued protection against wear.

Care and Maintenance

Prevention for Timber, Laminate and Vinyl Flooring

Preventative measures are very important in maintaining your flooring. Install a good-quality mat both inside and outside external doors. Mats should be as large as possible and capable of removing both grit and moisture.

Whenever possible, remove your shoes. This will help reduce the amount of dirt brought into the property and minimise impact damage from stilettos. In very heavily trafficked areas, such as entrance halls and kitchens, the use of mats should be considered to reduce surface wear and potential dulling of the floor. Rugs should allow the floor to ‘breathe’.

Irrespective of the substrate, no surface can be considered immune to physical damage such as indentations or scratches. Use felt protective pads on all furniture legs or bases, and lift rather than drag items to prevent surface damage. Similarly, ensure that pets’ claws are regularly trimmed to reduce the possibility of scratches and indentations.

Wipe up any spills immediately upon noticing them, as they may cause permanent staining if left untreated.

Cleaning Instructions for Timber, Vinyl and Laminate Flooring

Regular cleaning is essential to maintain the appearance of your floor and prevent surface damage. Use dry cleaning methods such as the Bona Spray Mop system with the Bona Microfibre Dusting Pad, a soft broom, or a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment. Regularly removing dirt and grit helps prevent scratches and surface wear.

For Timber Flooring

To remove water-soluble dirt:

1. Begin with dry cleaning to eliminate surface dust and debris.

2. Lightly spray the floor with Bona Wood Floor Cleaner.

3. Clean using a Bona Microfibre Cleaning Pad, working along the direction of the floorboards where possible.

For Vinyl and Laminate Flooring

To remove water-soluble dirt:

1. Dry clean the floor first to remove surface dust and grit.

2. Spray the surface sparingly with Bona Hard-Surface Floor Cleaner.

3. Wipe clean using a Bona Microfibre Cleaning Pad.

Important Care Guidelines

• Do not wet mop your flooring. Excessive amounts of water or cleaner may cause swelling, lifting of board edges, and uneven surfaces.

• Cleaning product residue may also lead to a hazy discolouration. If this occurs, simply clean the floor with water and gently rub the surface to dissolve and remove any remaining cleaner.

• Avoid household cleaners or polishes, as these can damage the finish and make future recoating or maintenance more difficult.

Pad Care and Maintenance

• Rinse cleaning pads regularly in clean water during use and replace them once soil Rinse cleaning pads regularly in clean water during use and replace them once soil.

• It is recommended to rinse or change the pad after cleaning every 10–15 m2.

• Bona cleaning pads can be machine washed at 60°C and reused up to 500 times.

• Do not use fabric softener or conditioner, as this reduces the cleaning pad’s effectiveness.

Deep Cleaning

Over time, regular cleaning may not remove all soluble materials or spills, particularly where residues have built up on the floor. In such cases, a deep clean is recommended using the appropriate Bona Oxy Power Deep Cleaner and the Bona Microfibre Deep Clean Pad.

• For timber flooring, use Bona Oxy Power Timber Floor Deep Cleaner.

• For vinyl or laminate flooring, use Bona Oxy Power Hard Surface Floor Deep Cleaner.

Bona Deep Cleaner products are formulated with hydrogen peroxide, providing stronger cleaning power than standard Bona Hard-Surface Cleaners. The oxygenated formula produces micro-cleaning bubbles that help loosen dirt, break down stubborn residues, and lift them away from the surface.

According to the CDC (USA), hydrogen peroxide is a stable and effective disinfectant against a wide range of microorganisms, including many bacteria and viruses, when used on hard, non-porous surfaces.

Cleaning steps for best results:

1. Remove dust and loose debris using dry cleaning methods (e.g., microfibre pad, vacuum, or soft broom).

2. Clean the floor as normal using the standard Bona cleaner suitable for your flooring type.

3. Spray the surface with the appropriate Bona Oxy Power Deep Cleaner.

4. Allow the product to sit for approximately one minute to activate the cleaning action.

5. Wipe the area using the Bona Microfibre Deep Clean Pad.

Maintenance

For Timber Flooring

If an area of the floor begins to appear slightly dull compared to the rest, the use of Bona Refresher should be considered. Bona Refresher is designed to restore an uneven sheen to the floor while also providing added protection against future foot traffic.

Most importantly, floors maintained with Bona Refresher can be refurbished in the future without needing to be sanded back to bare timber.

Note: Domestic staircases have specific slip-resistance requirements, and Bona Refresher must not be used on stair treads.

Preparation

1. Thoroughly clean the floor using Bona Wood Cleaner. Allow the surface to dry completely.

Important: The floor must be clean. Any remaining dirt or debris will become trapped beneath the layer of Bona Refresher and remain visible.

Application

2. Apply an even coat of Bona Refresher, working along the direction of the boards, using the Bona Applicator Pad on the Bona Mop. Refer to the product datasheet for detailed instructions.

Drying and Use

3. After 2 hours, the floor can be lightly trafficked and put back into light use. However, avoid replacing rugs, furniture, or other heavy items for at least 24hrs. It is important to treat the entire floor rather than isolated or small sections to ensure a consistent finish.

For Laminate and Vinyl Flooring

The use of Bona Hard-Surface Polish may be considered if an area of the floor begins to appear slightly dull compared to the remainder.

Bona Hard-Surface Polish is a ready-to-use, water-based maintenance coating suitable for a wide variety of hard surface floors, including:

• Laminate flooring

• Vinyl

• Linoleum

• Unglazed tiles (ceramic, quarry)

• Stone

• Sealed marble

It restores shine to the floor while providing extended protection against wear.

Note: This product is only available in a High Gloss sheen and is not suitable for restoring satin or matt finishes, as it will significantly increase the gloss level.

Preparation

1. Thoroughly clean the floor and allow the surface to dry completely. Important: The floor must be clean. Any remaining dirt or debris will become trapped beneath the Bona Hard-Surface Polish and remain visible.

Application

2. Apply an even coat of Bona Hard-Surface Polish using the Bona Microfibre Applicator Pad on the Bona Spray Mop. Refer to the product datasheet for detailed instructions.

Drying and Use

3. After 2 hours, the floor may be trafficked and returned to normal use. However, avoid replacing rugs, furniture, or heavy items for at least 12 hours. It is important to treat the entire floor, rather than just small areas, to maintain an even appearance.

Ongoing Maintenance

• Continue regular cleaning using Bona Hard-Surface Floor Cleaner and a Bona Cleaning Pad.

• When the floor begins to show signs of wear, clean and apply a new layer of Bona Hard-Surface Polish.

• To remove any build-up of polish, use Bona Polish Remover as directed.

Refurbishment

For Timber Flooring

Important notes on sheen and refurbishment

The sheen level may increase with repeated use of Bona Refresher on low-sheen floors.

Bona Refresher should not be used on:

• Bona Traffic HD

• Bona Anti-Slip

• Bona Traffic HD Raw

• Or any other Bona matt or extra matt finishes

Floor Maintenance and Refurbishment

Regular maintenance significantly extends the life of timber flooring and delays the need for refurbishment. Generally, refurbishment is required due to appearance issues such as:

• Scratches

• Indentations

• Other surface damage

These issues are typically cosmetic, not related to surface wear, and can often be managed through preventative measures. However, over time, some surface deterioration is inevitable.

Ideally, an additional coat of Bona finish should be applied before the floor reaches a condition where full refinishing is necessary.

In most cases, refurbishment does not require sanding back to bare timber.

Instead, the process usually involves:

1. Thoroughly cleaning the floor

2. Preparing the surface as per Bona’s overcoating instructions

3. Applying a coat of the appropriate Bona finish
