Welcome to the Beaulieu River, which forms the south eastern edge of the Beaulieu Estate and is one of the few privately owned estuaries in the world. It has been in the custodianship of my family since 1538 when Henry VIII closed Beaulieu Abbey and sold its lands to my ancestor Thomas Wriothesley. The monks settled at Beaulieu partly because the river ensured easy transit between the abbey and points further afield, and so it remains today. The estuary is an ideal place from which to sail in the Solent or to visit for a short stay and, if you seek the pleasures of the countryside, the Beaulieu Estate and the New Forest National Park are on your doorstep. My aim is to maintain the natural beauty of the river and protect its wildlife and so the number of moorings is carefully controlled. The river currently offers 115 marina berths and over 300 moorings which are served by a seasonal water taxi. Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour offers full marina services, including newly refurbished washroom and laundry facilities, an open policy boatyard and chandlery. Along with a range of other benefits, permanent berth holders can take advantage of the Yacht Harbour’s membership of the TransEurope group of marinas which provides reciprocal discounts when visiting over 70 partner marinas around the UK and Europe.

FINDING US By Boat The Beaulieu River is centrally located on the Solent. When approaching from the east, keep the lit south cardinal to starboard off Stone Point and steer to the vicinity of a lit, yellow special buoy close to the bearing to run in on. The bearing to run in on is 324° guided by the transit marks, the front mark is port post No. 2 and the back mark is the eastern edge of Lepe House. The Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour is a pleasant 3.5 nautical mile cruise upstream. Please report to the Harbour Master’s Office on arrival using VHF channel 68 and call sign Beaulieu River Radio.

By Car We are 14 miles from the M27 with easy access to the main south coast cities, the M3 and London. There is ample parking for customers. Find us via satnav using SO42 7XB and enjoy your journey through the New Forest.

By Train The closest main line railway station is eight miles away in Brockenhurst, with a regular service running between London Waterloo and Weymouth. A taxi from Brockenhurst to Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour will take approximately 20 minutes.

Buckler’s Hard Water Taxi Beaulieu River customers can use the Buckler’s Hard water taxi to travel between their boats on the river and the marina. The taxi can be contacted via the Harbour Master’s Office on 01590 616200 or VHF channel 68 Beaulieu River Radio, and starts from the fuel jetty in the marina.

Visiting Visitors are welcome to berth on the visitor’s pontoon at any time, day or night. Please report to the Harbour Master’s Office within 24 hours of arriving inside the limits of the river. The Harbour Master’s Office can be contacted via VHF channel 68 Beaulieu River Radio or via telephone 01590 616200. Rates from 1st April to the end of September 2019 for visiting yachts, per vessel, per night. Subject to availability. STAYING SAFE ON THE RIVER The Beaulieu River team work hard to ensure all visitors and vessels remain safe when using the river. Please help us to achieve this by observing the following safety rules. ⚓⚓ Keep your speed below the maximum of 5 knots and ensure minimum wash for the entire length of the river.

The marina is staffed from 08:00–20:30 in summer and 08:00–16:30 in winter with security outside of these hours.

⚓⚓ Keep to the starboard side of Fairway.

⚓⚓ Please don’t jet-ski, water-ski or board sail on the river. ⚓⚓ Swimming is not permitted in the river.

⚓⚓ Kill cords should be worn where fitted.

⚓⚓ We encourage all river users to wear lifejackets.

⚓⚓ In a man overboard situation, call for help and then try to assist but without putting yourself in danger. There are emergency ladders on all marina and river pontoons. Call channel 68.

Please report any incidents or concerns to the Harbour Master’s Office via VHF channel 68 Beaulieu River Radio or by calling 01590 616200. Out of hours call 999.

⚓⚓ Have fun, but please don’t endanger your life or others by operating your vessel whilst intoxicated.

⚓⚓ Take care on the pontoons when wet, frosty or icy.

⚓⚓ To ensure their safety, please ensure dogs are kept on leads at all times and don’t secure dogs or children to canoes or kayaks.

⚓⚓ Please do not moor onto navigation buoys, beacons or marks.

⚓⚓ If arriving from outside the UK with animals on board, you must have the correct paperwork from an authorised port of entry before using the river.

⚓⚓ Underwater diving activities are not allowed without permission from the Harbour Master.

⚓⚓ All commercial vessels, vessels over 20m, and vessels not under command, restricted in ability to

manoeuvre, or towing another vessel or structure are requested to give notice of their movements by calling Beaulieu River Radio on VHF channel 68.

Our boatyard Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour is pleased to offer a competitive range of boatyard services all year round. The boatyard operates a 35 tonne hoist which can lift vessels up to 18m in length. The boatyard team can lift, pressure wash and block ashore vessels in the boatyard. On-site facilities include electricity and a chandlery. Competitively priced under cover storage is available for when a more specialised service is required. A list of approved suppliers can be instructed to work in the boatyard (see opposite page).

Boat owners, for a small charge, are welcome to use suppliers of their choice, provided they comply with our guidelines and register with the Harbour Master’s Office. Alternatively, you may wish to use one of a number of approved suppliers who are known for their high standard of service and are registered to deliver services at Beaulieu River and the boatyard. The story starts before I can remember I was sliding down the Beaulieu at dusk on an ebb tide as a baby. Strapped in, my mum tells me, to the corner of the wheelhouse in a modified harness originally designed for a pet. As I became conscious I remember the rush to get the main up and clip the corroding hanks to the forestay. As we rounded the last big bend beyond Ginâ€™s Farm, the hull came alive as the souâ€™westerly over Needs Ore filled the sails, the hull healed slightly, the noise of the water running past changed, and the diesel engine could be killed off. That was the exact moment when the weekend or holiday began.

I never chose the Beaulieu. It was always there. It was where my family spent our happiest times, packed in a 37 foot ketch, meals for seven on a two burner stove, sleeping on the bench, the floor, never an actual bunk. It was a refuge after a day of beating into the teeth of the afternoon sea breeze that howls up from the Needles, it was calm and familiar after a holiday in northern France of violent tides, unfriendly fishermen and brutal Channel crossings. The river ran through our family life, created a culture in which the river’s two identities, history and the sea, stood out. We wandered through Buckler’s Hard, imagining Nelson’s ships taking shape on the slips, the landing craft coming in for repair before D-day, seamen telling stories of the Spanish Main at the bar of the Master Builder’s. We knew the places on the river where the Mulberry Harbours were assembled for the invasion of Normandy, and the creeks where smugglers landed cargoes from France. When the twists and turns of life brought me back to the Beaulieu, this time as an adult, to settle and start a family, I could not believe my luck. Now it is my kids that watch as their father, like his father before him, calculates the depth on the bar at low springs. Now they groan as I try and navigate up the channel

trying not to crash into the mud flats and navigational marks. They follow dutifully as I wade out through deep mud to inspect a mooring line. One day I hope they will tell their kids of William Rufus, killed on the banks of the Beaulieu, not further north as claimed, of D-day, of Nelson, of King John. They will watch curlews and seals. They will, I hope, eat the oysters which will once again thrive, enjoy the river free from the chemicals that leech off the commercial farms that line other English rivers, haul a line, drop an anchor and grip a tiller. The world may change, but thankfully, the Beaulieu will not.

THINGS TO DO ASHORE Staying on the Beaulieu River provides the perfect opportunity to hop ashore and explore the New Forest. Here are some suggestions for how you could spend a couple of hours or days.

Places to Visit

Cycling

Explore the historic village of Buckler’s Hard, just a short stroll from the marina. The Maritime Museum and historic cottages tell the story of the village and its important role in 18th century shipbuilding.

Bicycles can be hired from the Harbour Office. Off-road cycling in the New Forest is permitted on a waymarked network of Forestry Commission tracks. A map of authorised routes can be downloaded from newforestnpa.gov.uk

Just over two miles up-river is the village of Beaulieu, and home of the Beaulieu visitor attraction featuring the National Motor Museum, Palace House, Beaulieu Abbey and World of Top Gear. Beaulieu River visitors receive 20% off admission to both attractions – see over for further details. Further afield, the New Forest villages of Brockenhurst, Lyndhurst and Burley and the market town of Lymington are within a 30 minute drive of Buckler’s Hard, providing the opportunity to explore shops, cafes and restaurants.

Beach Days Lepe Country Park and Calshot are good spots to sit on the beach and watch the busy Solent, or within 45 minutes by car you can be sitting on the sandy beach at Mudeford.

Eat & Drink The Captain’s Cabin Tea Rooms at the top of Buckler’s Hard High Street serves hot and cold refreshments, including afternoon tea. The Master Builder’s Hotel offers casual and fine dining options and is just a five minute walk from the marina. Alternatively a leisurely 2 mile walk to Beaulieu village will provide further places to eat including cosy cafes, a pub and an award winning restaurant.

BUCKLER’S HARD VILLAGE At the heart of the Beaulieu River is Buckler’s Hard, an 18th century village where ships were once built for Nelson’s Navy. Originally named ‘Montagu Town’ by John, 2nd Duke of Montagu, Buckler’s Hard developed into a hive of shipbuilding activity in the late 1700s. With New Forest oak on the doorstep, it was ideally situated for such a task. The cottages that line the unusually wide street – where logs and planks were once piled – housed tradesmen and labourers.

Step through the doors of a worker’s cottage as you go back in time to the 18th century to find out about the home life of the villagers and their families. One house, once the village school, is now a chapel in which regular services are held. Recent excavations of its cellar suggest that the building may have been used by smugglers.

Shipbuilding here went into decline shortly after the Napoleonic wars, but the village has remained unspoilt by the passage of time. In the Maritime Museum you will discover the fascinating story of the village, its residents and the ships they built, including Nelson’s favourite ship HMS Agamemnon. Listen in to conversations between villagers of the 18th century New Inn and follow the stories of the 19th and 20th century residents in an exhibition about village life.

VISIT BEAULIEU Just two miles upstream from Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour is the village of Beaulieu, the family seat of the Montagu family and the location of the world famous National Motor Museum. The National Motor Museum, with over 250 vehicles in its collection, tells the story of motoring on the roads and circuits of Britain from the pioneering days to the present. Exhibits include early motor carriages, classic family saloons, motorcycles, Formula One racers and a rustic 1930s country garage. New for 2019, see original costumes, props and artwork in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang 50 years, an exhibition celebrating the 50th anniversary of this family favourite film. After the Motor Museum, you can stroll through the gardens to Palace House, home to the Montagu family. Once the Great Gatehouse to Beaulieu Abbey, the house has been in the Montagu family’s ownership since 1538. You will be greeted by Victorian costumed staff and then welcome to explore the house at your own pace. If you’re lucky, there’ll be a smell of cooking wafting through the house from the 19th century kitchen where the cook still bakes bread in the coal fired range. Visit from 25th May until 14th July to explore a sculpture exhibition featuring works by leading sculptors throughout the grounds and gardens.

Not far from Palace House are the remains of Beaulieu Abbey. Founded by King John in 1204, the conserved ruins of this once vast medieval abbey are an excellent place to relax and even enjoy a period of quiet contemplation. You can also learn much about the Abbey’s history in the Abbey Exhibition and view a fascinating series of embroideries by Belinda, Lady Montagu which illustrate key events in the Abbey’s history. Other attractions include the updated World of Top Gear which recreates the feel of the TV studio, complemented by a tongue-in-cheek display of the cars modified for the challenges seen on our screens. The Secret Army Exhibition reveals the story behind Beaulieu’s covert wartime role as a ‘finishing school’ for secret agents. Visitors can also ride the high level Monorail which circles the site and offers sweeping views of the park and gardens.

Mill Pond Beaulieu Village contains a Beaulieu Village variety of shops, including a grocery store, newsagent, art gallery, gift shops, tea rooms, coffee shops, chocolate studio, garden centre, florist, hairdresser and the bookings office for New Forest Activities. The 2¼ mile footpath between Buckler’s Hard and Beaulieu passes through the heart of the Beaulieu Estate and forms part of the Solent Way.

The gradual transition from woodland through tidal river-edge grassland into saltmarsh is rare in England and supports a wide range of plant and bird species, particularly wintering waders and wildfowl.

1 Curtle Meadows

It was here that scenes for the film A Man for All Seasons were shot in 1966, as the unspoilt river looked as the Thames might have done in the 16th century.

2 Bailey’s Hard

The tall red brick chimney is that of the old estate brickworks which drew on the local deposits of clay. Built in 1790, it last produced bricks in 1935 and is now a private residence. It was here that Salisbury, the first naval vessel to be built on the river, was completed in 1698.

This alternative route gives closer views over the river, all of which is a designated National Nature Reserve. The flat area you see is known as a ‘salting’. Grass species such as Spartina have helped to stabilise the mud banks over time. The path passes some small creeks notable for plumed reeds, especially the Yellow Flag Iris in summer. Also look for Sea Lavender, Cord Grass and Sea Purslane.

The trees here are predominantly Oak dating from the early 19th century. Later these were supplemented by Wild Service, Hazel, Scots Pine and Beech with Common Privet, Butcher’s Broom, Holly and Hawthorn providing shelter and food for game birds. Note the stunted tree growth at the river’s edge, caused by poor drainage and the salt water from the river.

Bailey’s Hard

An open expanse of various salt tolerant plants. This mud bank is the holding area for dredgings from the river but is quickly being colonised by indigenous plant and animal life, notably Shellduck, Canada Geese, Mallard, Oystercatchers, Redshank and Curlew. A public bird hide is also located here, accessible from the footpath and suitable for wheelchair users.

This small thatched cottage was built by George, Duke of Montagu, c1760 for his son who suffered from arthritis. Salt water was considered beneficial for sufferers of arthritis so a pond in the garden was filled with river water in which people could bathe.

Marina

This is the site of the old oyster beds created in the 1870s. During the Second World War, an experimental floating dock was built here, together with components for the Mulberry Harbour, used in the D-Day landings. Today, oysters are again being bred on the river, where the water is pure enough for a licence to be granted.

This was where the monks of Beaulieu Abbey kept their fishing boats and trading ships. It was a convenient place to load and unload without having to navigate the narrower channel upstream. The name ‘Gins’ is thought to derive from ‘ingenium’, a lifting or winding mechanism used to move the load. Today, Gins is a base for the Royal Southampton Yacht Club. An oil pipeline from Wytch Farm near Poole to Fawley Oil Refinery passes under the river at this point.

5 Sea Banks

In the 18th century, this was an anchoring point for the hulls of Mulberry newly launched ships en route for Portsmouth. The grass that covers the mudflats along the river is called Spartina 3 Townsendii. This first appeared on the river in the 1870s to help bind the mud flats, thus reducing Fiddlers erosion. A second variety, Spartina Anglicana, was introduced in 1898.

The land behind these banks was reclaimed in the 18th century and used Gins for salt production. Salt was a highly prized commodity and Salt Officers were based in Buckler’s Hard to check that the quantity of salt produced tallied with the amount of tax paid. 200 years later, the banks remain intact, but they do not hold out the highest tides, and the meadows behind are periodically flooded. This provides waterfowl, particularly Brent Geese and Wigeon, with feeding areas in autumn and winter.

6 Needs Ore Coastguard Cottages

Built in the 1860s for the Coastguard, who were at the forefront of the fight against smuggling, as well as defence and rescue. Officers were moved around from station to station to prevent them becoming established in the local community and susceptible to bribery and collusion. The Needs Ore Station closed in 1922 but the cottages continue to be occupied by tenants of the Estate.

7 Needs Ore Point

This was where Charles Bull created his ‘Bull’s Run’ in 1726–27 as a shortcut into the river from the Solent. It was closed by a Special Act of Parliament in 1986 to protect Gull Island from erosion. Needs Ore is the base of the Beaulieu River Sailing Club whose dinghy races take place in this part of the river.

8 Gull Island

This is actually a spit and owes its name to the Black-Headed Gulls which used to nest here in abundance, and after a period of time away are now nesting again. This forms part of the Special Protection Area (SPA) and is out of bounds to the public.

9 Millennium Beacon

This miniature lighthouse serves as a day mark and contains a sectored light for guiding boats into the river at night. Its construction was kindly funded by many of the yachtsmen who use these waters. The lands bordering the river contain an exceptional variety of habitats which support an equally varied assemblage of wildlife. To protect important colonies of nesting seabirds, Gull Island and Warren Shore are Lepe House closed to the public; however, access to other parts of

the Reserve is possible by permit, issued by the Beaulieu Estate Office.

LANDSCAPE MANAGER PETER STAGG The Beaulieu River and its surroundings are home to a diverse range of habitats and wildlife. The Beaulieu Estate is responsible for the conservation management of the area, in particular the nature reserves at Warren Farm and Needs Ore. Let me explain what makes this area so special and how we go about protecting it for future generations. Warren Farm encompasses 380 acres at the southern end of the Estate and forms part the North Solent National Nature Reserve. It is special because it is not only a Site of Special Scientific Interest, but is within the Solent and Southampton Water Special Protection Area, is a Solent Maritime Special Area of Conservation and a wetland designated as of international importance under the Ramsar Convention by UNESCO. We manage it under a Natural England Higher Level Stewardship scheme with objectives to conserve wildlife, maintain and enhance the quality and character of its landscape and to protect it as a natural resource and historic environment. Its habitats are managed to maintain different heights and age structures, especially within scrub areas and reed beds and we work with Natural England on this. Cattle, ponies and hay making in the summer achieve a short enough grass sward by autumn for the large numbers of geese and wildfowl which overwinter there. Habitats include grassland, woodland,

coastal salt marsh, estuary mudflats, heathland, freshwater and saline pools, with a network of ditches and dykes interlinking them. These provide a diverse range of wildlife, flora and fauna, some of which are extremely rare. Warren Farm is also internationally important for its population of migratory wildfowl and is of national importance as a breeding site for wading birds, gulls and terns. Large areas are managed for spring/ summer breeding waders such as lapwings, redshank, oystercatcher and avocet alongside songbirds including the skylark, reed warbler and meadow pipit. Other areas are designated for the overwintering feeding of birds including brent geese, wigeon and teal. Warren Farm is not only a significant haven for wildlife but is also a working farm which we manage with the involvement of local graziers and an agricultural contractor. It is a great example of how low intensity farming can complement nature conservation and also demonstrates the estateâ€™s commitment to preserving our natural heritage.

PROTECTION OF WILDLIFE The Beaulieu River is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and forms part of the North Solent National Nature Reserve. The river and shoreline form an internationally protected habitat for birds throughout the year. Disturbance in any form has a detrimental impact on their survival. Dogs are not permitted access to these areas under any circumstances. Landing is only permitted at designated points upstream of the RSYC at Gins. Your co-operation would be much appreciated.
