Paris of the 1920s–1940s had a vibrant artistic culture, much of it driven by the presence of migrant artists. This groundbreaking exhibition catalogue spotlights the Asian artists who lived, worked and exhibited in Paris in this dynamic period. Featuring the works of well-known artists like Foujita Tsuguharu, Sanyu, Xu Beihong, Georgette Chen and Le Pho, the catalogue also includes new research on lesser known and hidden figures. With critical attention to issues of colonialism, reception and migrant experience, this publication challenges ideas about the development of modernism in conditions of globalised exchange. With close to 200 artwork and 100 archival images, as well as translations into English of selected primary sources—such as artist letters, press reviews and exhibition texts from the period—the catalogue is an exciting source of new comparative research on modern art, for scholars and the general reader alike.

This bilingual publication accompanies National Gallery Singapore’s solo exhibition on the renowned centenarian artist, Lim Tze Peng. It features a remarkable selection of artworks spanning from 1946 to 2023, drawn from Lim’s personal collection and masterpieces held in public collections. Through Lim’s landscapes, mindscapes, and “heartscapes,” this volume, alongside the exhibition, offers a profound exploration of his artistic journey. The book brings together new writings by leading experts on the artist, excerpts from unpublished interviews with the artist, and rare archival materials—many published for the first time. A key artist in Singapore’s art history, Heman Chong’s multi-faceted practice dates back to the early 2000s. This publication accompanies a survey exhibition of the same name, which presents recent artworks including new commissions that reconsider canonical pieces from his oeuvre. Known for his acerbic wit, Chong’s art addresses contemporary geopolitics and the infrastructural ironies of our data-driven and networked society. Heman Chong: This is a dynamic list and may never be able to satisfy particular standards for completeness surveys the artist’s practice, with essays by international curators who have collaborated with him throughout his career.

This publication accompanies the return of Robert Zhao Renhui’s Seeing Forest —an exhibition first presented at the Biennale Arte 2024 in Venice—to Singapore. In Seeing Forest , Zhao turns his gaze towards secondary forests and overlooked pockets of greenery amid Singapore’s mostly urban environment. The project is the fruit of several years of careful visitations to secondary woodland that had proliferated on the grounds of a former military camp, during which the artist learned to attune himself to the chrono-diverse rhythms of the landscape and the creatures inhabiting it.
The second volume of Seeing Forest features newly commissioned essays who have been invited to compose other throughlines among forests past, present and future. Vol. 1 was published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition at the Singapore Pavilion of the Biennale Arte 2024

This compelling collection of essays is a mediation on “the figurine,” theorised as a means to rethink concepts of art, ornament, the decorative and the devotional, and their postcolonial implications. Each of the seven essays is a close reading of a particular image, ranging from the annual procession of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo, Manila, to the work of the 19 th -century painter Juan Luna. Written by leading curator Professor Patrick Flores, this second title in the National Gallery Singapore Art Writing imprint is enlivening reading for those with an interest in art theory and the postcolonial condition of the image in the Global South.
