A 90.77 per cent ‘Yes’ vote in the 1967 Referendum showed unprecedented support across Australia for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to be fully counted as citizens on the census and for the Commonwealth to unify the governance of Indigenous affairs. The National Gallery of Australia will commemorate the 50th anniversary of this key event in 2017 with its third National Indigenous Arts Triennial, Defying Empire.
