President’s Report

Tracks

President’s Report By Marty Lorick, Triple Crown Trailers This year held challenges for the light- and medium-duty trailer industry with the continuation of COVID-19, workforce shortages, and supply chain delays. Despite this, the industry and the Association are finishing the year strong. As 2021 ends, it’s important to reflect on this year’s successes and be thankful for what we have accomplished through hard work and persistence. To protect the health and safety of the industry, for the first time in 32 years, the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) was unable to host its Annual Convention & Trade Show in February of 2021. Instead, the Association created additional advertising and sponsorship opportunities to help suppliers/service providers connect with trailer manufacturers and dealers. The Association hosted six webinars, transitioning much of the same education that would have been received at the convention to a live stream and on-demand delivery. NATM also made its annual membership meeting virtual, allowing all NATM members to participate from the comfort of their desks. The cancellation of the 2021 show was of course disappointing, but the industry’s reunion in Tampa, Fla., Feb. 1-3, 2022, will be all the sweeter! The Association is thrilled to be opening the show to trailer dealers for the first time in history. Trailer dealers

are an integral link in the industry and important advocates for trailer safety. NATM is looking forward to providing education to dealers, creating networking opportunities, and opening the trade show to a broader audience. By the time we meet in Tampa it will have been nearly two years since the light- and mediumduty trailer industry was together, and I look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones! For more information about the 2022 Convention, turn to page 26. This spring, NATM members voted to create a new membership type, Tow Vehicle OEMs. As autonomous vehicles, electric vehicles, and vehicle-to-vehicle communication continue to revolutionize, it is vital for the trailer manufacturing industry to engage directly with tow vehicle manufacturers to ensure the towing combination is working in unison and roadway safety continues to be protected. By creating a specialized membership category, NATM invites tow vehicle OEMs to engage directly with the industry. The NATM Technology Committee continues to serve an important role in this work by monitoring tow vehicle OEMs latest innovations, researching potential impacts, and educating the industry. Together, these efforts will help prepare the industry for the future and continue to serve NATM’s trailer safety mission.

It’s not just a mudguard. It’s Selection, Delivery, Fit, Fabrication & Service.

President’s Report

Tracks In the fall, NATM hosted its annual Regulatory Roundup & Capitol Hill Visits in September. The event was again virtual as safety measures at the Capitol made in-person meetings impossible. Nevertheless, NATM members were able to engage with experts from federal agencies and industry groups about the Infrastructure Package, then still in limbo, as well as workforce challenges and efforts being taken to address a vast gap between job openings and potential employees, as well as maritime trade and supply chain issues. Members were able to meet with legislators, imploring action on the Infrastructure Package, support for closing the skills gap and right-sizing immigration policies and processes to meet the growing needs for productionline labor. Members also addressed the alarming cost increases and supply chain delays that are threatening the ability of manufacturers to meet demand.

year with lower revenue and catching up on a backlog of member consultations from 2020. The industry and NATM adapted to resource scarcity in 2021. But NATM’s success is only possible because of the hard work and dedication of its members, and we truly value your contributions to making this year’s achievements a reality. Thank you to everyone who took time to serve on an NATM committee, attend the trade show, or take part in our government affairs initiatives including this year’s Regulatory Roundup. To my NATM family, I hope you all have a safe and happy “hauliday” season and a very happy New Year! ■

While the Association is looking forward to resuming in-person events in 2022, adapting to a virtual environment has its silver linings. The Association engaged directly with legislators throughout the year, a task usually reserved for NATM’s government affairs representatives. These efforts helped create important new relationships. Congressional offices received specific stories from constituents about where support and action are most needed. Utilizing a hybrid process of in-person and remote meetings for the Compliance Verification Program not only helped protect the small team of Association staff, but it also allowed the staff to travel more efficiently, cutting costs in a

Headquarters Report

Tracks

Headquarters Report By Kendra Ansley, NATM Executive Director The end of the year is quickly approaching. For the final issue of Tracks each year, I like to reflect on our accomplishments before the enthusiasm of the new year kicks in. Your Association, its board, committees, and staff have worked to calibrate and recalibrate with the past year’s challenges and adjustments. Despite these many hurdles, National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) continues to reflect on the hard work and ingenuity of the industry it represents, and was able to do more with less in 2021. As part of the 2019-2022 Strategic Plan, NATM brought its members and dealer affiliates an online resource library and a newly launched online store. For the first time in history, members and affiliates can access a library of Tracks articles, on-demand webinars, and even purchase decals online. You can learn more about the online store on page 50. The Association also released a new compendium of resources geared specifically toward trailer manufacturers to support creating a Quality Management System (QMS). Members and affiliates can access a step-by-step plan for creating a QMS as well as templates and sample documents. NATM has long included a recommendation in its Compliance Verification Program that manufacturers have a QMS, and now companies looking to create or improve their existing system have the resources available at the touch of a button to support the process. 2021 brought NATM’s fourth annual Trailer Safety Week (TSW) in early June. The event boasted more than 300 allies, including trailer manufacturers, dealers, suppliers/service providers, industry partners, state/government agencies, and law enforcement. This year, the event brought in a new Partner, Peerless Chain, helping advance the cargo securement information available to end-users. TSW was also featured on several news stations, expanding the reach of the trailer safety practices to thousands of homes across the U.S. The Association also focused efforts in 2021 on reaching end-users and dealers about the importance and value of the Compliance Verification Program – pushing users to look for the NATM decal when purchasing a trailer. NATM members are encouraged to use the decal marketing kit to educate their dealers and customers about the value of their investment in compliance.

compliance team was able to use remote and hybrid processes for verifying the compliance of 226 trailer manufacturer members and counting this year. Supporting trailer manufacturers’ efforts to comply with federal regulation and industry best practices remains a priority for NATM. While our team worked to get caught up from a 2020 consultation backlog, they were also able to make improvements to the program with the help of the Compliance Committee. New recommended practices and refined enforcement policies bring members more value than ever before through the Compliance Verification Program. This past year has been a whirlwind for the light- and mediumduty trailer industry. Demand for new trailer units remains, but barriers to meet demand continue to plague the industry. NATM has been working with legislators and federal agencies on a number of fronts. From advocating for government action to address workforce shortages and supply chain challenges, to establishing allies in Congress to support the needs and concerns of the light- and medium-duty industry related to underride guard language, as well as expanding access to trailer safety funding, NATM’s government affairs team has been hard at work on behalf of the industry. In 2022, NATM is focusing its efforts on supporting the industry through challenges. The Association will continue its engagement with legislators on meaningful reforms and support mechanisms, and will continue to grow this great industry. If you have any feedback on how NATM can better serve you, please don’t hesitate to reach out! Have a wonderful holiday season! Kendra ■

The NATM Education Committee curated six webinars and the recent Workforce Development Webinar Series over the course of 2021. Letter to Prospective Members

Tracks

Letter to Prospective Members By Kendra Ansley, NATM Executive Director To our industry peers, The National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) has decided each year to send one complimentary issue of our magazine to non-members of the Association to continue to educate the entire industry on trailer safety and compliance. As an association of more than 900 light- and medium-duty trailer manufacturers, industry suppliers, service providers, and dealers, NATM represents a large proportion of the industry. And while we remain an association by and for our members, our commitment to trailer safety, compliance, and industry success extends to the entire industry without regard to membership status. A rising tide lifts all boats. It is for this reason the Association has made many educational workshops, webinars, and even the NATM Convention available to non-members. NATM just recently launched an online store that includes technical content, articles from back-issues of Tracks magazine, webinars, end-user resources, and more. While not all of the content is available to non-members, NATM is offering more educational resources to the entire industry than ever before. Education on topics like the most common failures of the Compliance Verification Program, regulations covering de-rating trailer GVWRs, and compliant tire record keeping practices are all critical to roadway safety. Access to this information should be reasonably available to the entire industry. In its meetings with legislators and federal agencies, like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA),

8

November/December 2021

NATM has had countless conversations about how the association can help educate the entire industry. One failure, one accident, one issue can send ripples throughout the whole industry. As such, we hope you enjoy this issue of Tracks magazine at no cost. We hope you’ll check out the website for upcoming events and participate when relevant to your business. The 2022 Annual Convention & Trade Show is also open to nonmembers, and non-affiliates and we have a great lineup of events and workshops for industry members. We hope you’ll join us Feb. 1-3, 2022 in Tampa, Fla. For more information about this event, turn to page 26. Of course, we hope you’ll join NATM and benefit from the numerous benefits and services available to members. We would love to hear your voice when it comes to setting the strategic direction of the association, in meetings with members of Congress and federal agencies whose actions impact your work. Until then, we look forward to providing you, a member of the industry NATM works to serve day in and day out, with this one piece of membership we think will be of value. If you have any questions about NATM, please don’t hesitate to reach out! Cheers! Kendra ■

Virtual 2021 Regulatory Roundup a Success

In September, the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) hosted its annual Regulatory Roundup speaker series, which provides an opportunity for its Members and Dealer Affiliates to stay engaged with government and industry stakeholders on issues of importance to the light- and medium-duty trailer industry. Past speakers for the event include congressional members and staff, federal agency representatives from the Departments of Transportation and Labor, and trade group leaders from the National Association of Manufacturers and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. This year’s edition featured another insightful panel of expert speakers, which included: Darien Flowers Deputy Policy Director, Minority Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation Ben Siegrist Director of Infrastructure, Innovation and Human Resources Policy National Association of Manufacturers Darrell Conner Government Affairs Counselor K&L Gates Josh Neff Chief, Medium and Heavy Duty Vehicle Defect Division National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Jeremy Gunderson Senior Safety Recall Specialist/Acting Chief RMD National Highway Traffic Safety Administration To open the event, Flowers sketched out an overview of what Congress was working on related to the trailer industry, including the complex budget reconciliation process, the outlook

for passage of infrastructure legislation, and an update on a series of travel and tourism bills. The morning continued with Siegrist, who provided legislative analysis on policies that included infrastructure investment, workforce development, and developments related to labor and immigration policy. The conversation concluded with a highlevel discussion about the impacts of ocean shipping delays and rising freight rates on the manufacturing industry. Leveraging his decades of experience in the maritime space, Conner walked attendees through the intricacies of the global supply chain. Conner explained the multifaceted nature of global shipping, which has suffered from significant delays and dysfunctions since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The discussion touched on a wide range of topics, including rising freight costs, container and chassis availability, and solutions being presented by Congress and the Biden Administration. The event concluded with back-to-back presentations from Neff and Gunderson of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The two speakers provided an overview of the agency’s vehicle defect and recall processes, detailing the importance of maintaining accurate customer data, and the need for manufacturers to stay engaged with NHTSA officials on a regular basis. Neff noted the crucial role that industry plays in the process and encouraged NATM members to schedule recurring meetings with the agency. Despite another year of adapting to the difficulties of advocacy during a pandemic, the NATM team organized another successful and informative virtual session. Member participation was high, audience questions were thoughtful and engaging, and the panel provided invaluable insights on how the inner workings of Washington, D.C. impact the industry. NATM anticipates further discussions evolving from its Regulatory Roundup and is looking forward to reengaging with the officials that presented in this year’s event. ■ www.NATM.com

Trailer Manufacturers: Join Now, Receive Two Free Months of Membership By Meghan Ryan, NATM Assistant Director

The backbone of the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) is the Compliance Verification Program (CVP) for trailer manufacturers. Whether your company has been manufacturing for decades, or plans to start next year, the program will take the guesswork out of compliance. NATM is the industry association that can assist you with improving your business through its CVP, access to technical staff, educational resources and programming, government affairs advocacy, and networking opportunities to work directly with component suppliers and service providers. By joining this fall, your company can receive up to two free months of NATM membership!

NATM Compliance Verification Program and the Guidelines

All trailers are required to be built in accordance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), and NATM compiled all the applicable standards, regulations, and laws into one large compendium that is updated annually called The Guidelines for Minimum Recommended Manufacturing Practices, or the Guidelines. The Guidelines saves hours of time for trailer manufacturers because all the information is neatly sorted and readily available. NATM compliance consultants travel to member facilities after the initial sign up and then every two years thereafter to verify members have the processes in place to meet required regulations, standards, and best practices. During the visit, the consultants use a checklist created from the Guidelines to audit the company’s processes. It is important to distinguish that NATM does not audit all facets of the manufacturing process, such as welding, but instead ensures the company is meeting applicable federal requirements. Though the following is not a complete list, the consultation includes a review of the following items: Administrative—World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) number, information current with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), recordkeeping (tires, Early Warning Reporting (EWR), etc.), VIN labels, and owner’s manuals Safety Standards—safety chains or cables, brakes, emergency breakaway systems, rear underride Lighting—as required for trailers 30 feet in length or longer or trailers under 30 feet in length, as required for trailers 80 inches in width or wider or trailers under 80 inches in width

12

November/December 2021

Conspicuity Tape—as required for trailers 80 inches in width or wider and 10,000 lbs. GVWR or larger Recommendations—various recommendations based on industry best practices All NATM trailer manufacturer members are required to successfully complete a compliance consultation. Once a member has done so, they are able to purchase and place NATM compliance decals on their trailers. In recent years, NHTSA has been watching the light- and medium-duty trailer industry and levied fines of millions of dollars on trailer manufacturing companies failing to meet requirements. Fortunately, members receive NATM’s A Guide to NHTSA Early Warning Reporting and Safety Recalls, which is a practical guide to understanding obligations as enforced by NHTSA, as well as continuing education on EWR and tire recordkeeping requirements. Less than 40 percent of members, both first-time consultations and recertifications, pass their consultation immediately. This includes both new manufacturers and seasoned manufacturers who have just joined the Association. NATM consultants help members through the process of making the appropriate changes and submitting necessary corrections to pass the CVP.

NATM Decals

Once a member passes the Compliance Verification Program, they can purchase the red, white, and blue NATM decals to place on their trailers. NATM markets the decal to end-users and dealers as a sign of safety and an easy identifier of compliant manufacturers.

NATM Convention & Trade Show 2022

With more than 1,000 attendees annually, the NATM Convention & Trade Show is the ultimate networking, education, and product-sourcing event for the light- and medium-duty trailer industry. Trailer manufacturers and dealers walk the show floor to meet with exhibiting suppliers and service providers, and all attendees are eligible to attend the educational workshops. For those looking for new business leads, this is a do-not-miss event! By joining as a new member at any time and maintaining membership, you will qualify for the New Attendee Promo in Tampa, Fla., which includes two free full registrations, two spouse registrations and two room nights to attend the NATM Convention & Trade Show! NATM Debuts 2022 Guidelines

Tracks

NATM Debuts 2022 Guidelines By Kendra Ansley, NATM Executive Director The National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM), known as the resource for safety and compliance for the lightand medium-duty trailer industry, has published the 2021 edition of the Guidelines. This massive document takes the guesswork out of meeting federal requirements governing the manufacturing of trailers under 26,000 lbs. GVWR and is a benefit of NATM membership. Building trailers to meet federal regulations outlined in the NATM Guidelines is not optional. It is required by law and enforced by law enforcement every day on the nation’s roadways. But it can be very time-intensive for trailer manufacturers to research the many federal rules, regulations, standards, and accepted industry practices that govern trailer construction. NATM addresses this challenge by compiling the Guidelines for Recommended Manufacturing Practices for Light- and MediumDuty Trailers. The document consists of more than 400 pages of laws, regulations, rules, standards, and industry best practices. This information is gathered from resources such as the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Society of Automotive Engineers, Inc., the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association, the Traffic Safety Administration, the Maintenance Council, and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, amongst others. The Guidelines document is updated annually by industry experts who stay abreast of changing regulations and vet the addition of recommendations and best practices. This year, through the annual revision process, the 2021 version of the NATM Guidelines received several updates. 2021 updates to the Guidelines include but are not limited to: •

Expanded section B11 to include additional regulations related to the manufacture of units in multiple stages

•

Updated the compliance checklist to include rear underride labels and added the regulatory backing for this requirement

•

Updated Section B7 to reflect recent changes to FMVSS No. 110, removing reference to FMVSS No. 109

•

Added Section F2 to include a quick guide for recommended practices appearing on the NATM Compliance Verification Program Checklist

In recent years, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has increased its enforcement activity concerning the compliance of motor vehicle manufacturers— including trailer manufacturers. NATM assists its trailer manufacturing members in avoiding costly fines and decreasing liability related to trailer compliance through the NATM Compliance Verification Program (CVP). The NATM CVP is an unbiased, third-party audit of the trailer manufacturing process and uses the Guidelines as the backbone for the program. The CVP provides biennial on-site consultations to trailer manufacturers and technical assistance throughout the entire process to ensure companies are manufacturing trailers consistent with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and other industry best practices. Once a trailer manufacturer has successfully passed the Compliance Verification Program, the company is able to purchase NATM decals and market their company’s dedication to fulfilling their safety requirements by participating in an unbiased, thirdparty audit of their trailers. While participation in the NATM Compliance Verification Program is an additional, voluntary cost for manufacturers, there are economic benefits of participation. “The first-year sales saw a 20 percent boost and blew past the forecast over three years for the sales improvements and revenue targets for the existing trailer product,” says Pete Dixon, engineer at Karcher North America, Inc., on the benefits of being a member of NATM. “We will continue to use up the [NATM] labels we have in stock, and then order more.” For more information about how NATM can assist your trailer manufacturing company, visit www.natm.com, email NATMHQ@natm.com, or call (785) 272-4433. ■

Members report substantial time savings by utilizing the Guidelines, particularly on the topics of lighting and reflectors, VIN and data plates, and state brake requirements. While the Guidelines focus on U.S. regulations, many may have an interest in Canadian compliance. For more information, visit Transport Canada’s website at www.tc.gc.ca/en/transport-canada.html.

5 Tips on How To Create a Welding Environment That Attracts the Best New Welders By Jason Dunahoo, Market Segment Manager, Industrial Equipment, Miller Electric Mfg. LLC While the practice of welding has remained relatively unchanged, work environments and the technologies involved are changing. How is your operation embracing the changes? Adjustments can be made to the welding environment to help better meet changing welder expectations, save time in new welder training, and reduce time spent on non-welding activities. Learn more about how your operation can adjust—and ultimately help welders create high-quality welds.

How is the welding environment changing? Numerous factors are driving changes in manufacturing welding operations. These include: • • •

Experienced welders reaching retirement Newer workforce with different expectations New and evolving technologies

The skilled labor shortage ultimately means manufacturers are spending more time recruiting and training new welders. In addition to the training aspect, companies may also be dealing with more weld quality issues as novice welders are integrated into the operation. This influx of new welders is also driving changes in the welding environment to meet the needs of the newer workforce. Part of this evolution is the expectation for a more comfortable, cleaner working environment. The type of environment people want to work in is changing. As a result, the manufacturing environment is undergoing changes, including a greater emphasis on a comfortable environment and more digitization and automation in processes. Consider these five factors that can help operations adjust to the changing welding environment and expectations of new employees.

Upgrading to newer welding technologies can help manufacturers address a variety of challenges. Deltaweld® systems from Miller are available with Accu-Pulse technology and include EZ-Set technology, which simplifies parameter setup based on material thickness— removing complexity and reducing welder training time.

5 Tips on How To Create a Welding Environment That Attracts the Best New Welders

Tracks No. 1: Meeting changing expectations As experienced welders retire, they are replaced by a new generation of younger welders who often have different expectations for their work environment and what an employer should provide. While offering Wi-Fi and occasional phone access may not have been important in the past, in today’s environment they can be recruitment incentives for the new generation of welders. These generational differences happening in the industry may also require companies to take a different approach from a Human Resources perspective. For example, the mechanisms for hiring and retention may be quite different from what they have been in the past.

No. 2: Modern technology and products Legacy welding power sources have been workhorses for many years, but with the changing environment and the varied skill levels of today’s welders, upgrading to newer technologies can help manufacturers address a variety of challenges.

Look for welding solutions and processes that offer a wider operating window, which can help reduce spatter and weld defects, saving time and money. Pulsed welding isn’t a new technology, but the Accu-Pulse™ process from Miller is a pulsed MIG welding process that provides a 28 percent wider operating window and a more forgiving arc. This helps welders of all skill levels get into production quicker. Deltaweld® systems are available with Accu-Pulse technology and include EZ-Set technology, which simplifies parameter setup based on material thickness—removing complexity and reducing welder training time. In addition, newer welding equipment often includes easy user interfaces and graphics to aid new welders. Weld data monitoring technology can also assist in training new welders by providing real-time feedback along with digital work instructions and quality control within the weld cell. Insight Centerpoint™ weld data monitoring from Miller includes WorkFlow™ technology, which provides guided work instructions for pre-welding, intra-weld, and post-welding activities, leveraging resources like images, videos, and audio to directly improve quality and productivity.

No. 3: New welder training solutions Newer training solutions are another way to help engage the younger generation of welders and get them producing highquality welds faster. The AugmentedArc® Augmented Reality Welding System from Miller simulates multiple welding processes, blending realworld and computer-generated images into a unique, augmented reality environment. This type of training solution can foster an environment of continuous improvement while helping welders build on their training and skills.

Weld data monitoring technology, like Insight Centerpoint™ systems from Miller, can assist in training new welders by providing real-time feedback, along with digital work instructions and quality control within the weld cell. Today’s welders expect equipment and systems that are easier to use and navigate. Newer welding power sources are often designed with technologies that can help welders improve their skills as they’re learning — and still create high-quality welds, even with variations in technique.

5 Tips on How To Create a Welding Environment That Attracts the Best New Welders

Tracks Companies that don’t have the resources for an in-house training program can consider partnering with other companies or trade schools to launch a welder training program.

No. 4: Gamification Continuous improvement—and striving to reach a series of goals—can also be aided by gamification of the workplace. The concept of gamification involves bringing principles from gameplay (such as point scoring, rewards, competition with others) into the work setting to make it more engaging. For example, the same way gamers earn badges or points to level up as they play, employees can build skills and improve themselves as they work. Applying gamification principles to welding could mean providing bonuses or extra time off for every step in a process they learn or achieve — incentivizing their progression through a skill tree. This can help employees and organizations reach continuous improvement goals for skill levels, efficiency, or productivity.

and/or other means of respiratory protection, such as powered air purifying respirators (PAPRs) or supplied air respirators (SARs). Beyond proper welding safety, a comfortable manufacturing environment may also include regular cleaning, better lighting, and air conditioning. Welder comfort pays dividends through employee retention, increased productivity, and improved quality. When employees aren’t distracted by uncomfortable working conditions, they will be more efficient at getting their work done.

An updated welding environment As technology evolves and the workforce changes, being able to adapt is crucial for staying competitive. Companies that embrace the changes and react to the new expectations of today’s workforce will be more successful. Consider how new welding technologies, updated training solutions, and providing a comfortable working environment can help in attracting and retaining the next generation of welders. ■

The influx of new welders in the industry is driving changes in the welding environment to meet the needs of the newer workforce. This has resulted in a greater emphasis on a comfortable environment and more digitization and automation in processes.

No. 5: Focus on welder comfort There are many solutions to help make the work environment comfortable and inviting for new welders. Appropriate and effective personal protective equipment (PPE) provides safety and comfort for operators. Technology advancements, such as Miller® ClearLight™ Lens Technology, provide a high-definition view of the workpiece and weld puddle, resulting in improved visibility, comfort, and quality. The welding environment also plays a key role in welder comfort. Each environment should be evaluated to determine the best solution, which may include fume extraction equipment

Free Registrations & Room Nights for Dealer Affiliates at 2022 Convention & Trade Show By Meghan Ryan , NATM Assistant Director The National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) is excited to welcome trailer dealers to the 2022 NATM Convention & Trade Show in Tampa, Fla. Feb. 1-3, 2022! NATM has been committed to trailer safety for more than 30 years. While NATM has long worked with trailer manufacturers, industry suppliers, and service providers, trailer safety can only be improved through dealer interaction and consumer education. Expanding the Association’s base to include dealer affiliates and now allowing dealers to attend the Annual Convention & Trade Show is the logical next step in improving trailer safety. The NATM Convention & Trade Show is the annual trade show for the light- and medium-duty trailer industry. With more than 1,000 trailer manufacturer and supplier attendees per year and growing, this “must attend” event provides education, networking, and communication for those in the industry. Beware of Scammers Targeting NATM Convention, Marketing Lists

Tracks

Beware of Scammers Targeting NATM Convention, Marketing Lists By Meghan Ryan, NATM Assistant Director It has come to National Association of Trailer Manufacturers’ (NATM) attention that there are scammers claiming to offer NATM’s marketing and membership lists. NATM has also had issues with scammers claiming to offer registration lists for the NATM Convention & Trade Show, as well as bookings at host hotels. These scammers are sophisticated and often build emails and websites that look very professional, but they are purely out to collect your data and money. If you use them, you will not be registered for the event, nor receive an accurate membership or attendee list and will find that your hotel reservation does not exist.

Registration for the 2022 NATM Convention & Trade Show can only be done directly through NATM. Registration officially opened Sept. 13. To make hotel reservations or to register online, visit www.natm.com/convention. On-site registration will be available, but the earlier you register, the more you save! If you have any questions about registering for the 2022 NATM Convention & Trade Show or booking your rooms in Tampa, contact NATM Assistant Director Meghan Ryan at Meghan.Ryan@natm.com. NATM offers its membership list free of charge to all members. For the most up-to-date membership list, contact NATM Administrative Assistant Catie Rutkowski at Catie.Rutkowski@natm.com or call (785) 272-4433. ■

Advertising with NATM By Meghan Ryan, NATM Assistant Director Placing advertising in front of trailer manufacturers and dealers is one of the easiest and most effective benefits of National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) membership. As a not-for-profit organization, the Association works to keep advertising prices low enough to cover costs without breaking the marketing budgets of NATM’s supplier and trailer manufacturing members. Advertising in the bi-monthly Tracks magazine, on www.natm.com, in the annual NATM Convention Program and in the annual NATM Membership Directory & Buyer’s Guide is easy: simply send in your advertising contract and a PDF of the artwork and NATM will send you an invoice once your ad is sent to print in the publication of your choice.

If you or someone you know would like to receive Tracks magazine or advertising notices, please let NATM know, and you will be added to the mailing list. If you have any questions or concerns about advertising or Tracks magazine, contact Meghan Ryan, assistant director, at Meghan.Ryan@natm.com. NATM encourages members to submit suggestions for Tracks article topics and welcomes submissions for member spotlight articles. ■

Most Frequently Failed Compliance Verification Program Items in 2021

Most Frequently Failed Compliance Verification Program Items in 2021 By: Kendra Ansley, NATM Executive Director As National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) consultants conduct consultations across the membership, it is apparent certain items are failed more than others. NATM compiles these analytics periodically in an effort to address the most frequent issues industry-wide. In fact, less than 40 percent of members, both first-time consultations and recertifications, pass their consultation immediately. What follows is a list of these items in order starting with the most frequently missed item in 2021.

#1: Front and Rear Clearance Lamps are properly installed and have the appropriate lens coding. Summary: For trailers 80 inches in width or wider, the trailer must have two amber lamps, mounted on the front, marked “DOT” with lens coding P2, P3, PC, or PC2, mounted not more than 6 inches from the extreme width of the trailer as near the top as practicable. For these same trailers 80 inches in width or wider, the trailer must have two red lamps, mounted on the rear, marked “DOT” with lens coding P2, P3, PC, or PC2, mounted not more than 6 inches from the extreme width of the trailer as near the top as practicable. For more information, contact NATM to request the Federal Lighting Equipment Location Requirements poster or visit section B6 of the NATM Guidelines.

#4: Manufacturer’s 566 form is included on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) database and accurate. Summary: Each manufacturer is either found at http://vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov or has documentation showing the required paperwork has been filed with NHTSA. The information furnished to NHTSA must be up to date and include the following: a. Full individual, partnership, or corporate name of the manufacturer. b. Residence address of the manufacturer and state of incorporation, if applicable. c. Description of each type of motor vehicle or of covered equipment manufactured by the manufacturer, including, for motor vehicles, the approximate ranges of gross vehicle weight ratings for each type. 1. Except as noted below, the description may be of general types, such as “passenger cars” or “brake fluid.”

#2: The manufacturer provides tire warranty cards for each trailer sold.

2. In the case of multipurpose passenger vehicles, trucks, and trailers, the description shall be specific enough to indicate the types of use for which the vehicles are intended, such as “tank trailer, motor home, or cargo van.”

Summary: Each manufacturer is required to provide a tire warranty card with each trailer with the tire identification number (TIN) of the tires filled in. These cards are available from the supplier or manufacturer of the tires and can simply be filled out and given to the customer or dealer.

3. In the case of motor vehicles produced in two or more stages, if the manufacturer is an incomplete vehicle manufacturer, the description shall so state and include a description indicating the stage of completion of the vehicle and, where known, the types of use for which the vehicle is intended.

#3: The VIN label is applied in the proper location (front road side). Summary: A trailer’s VIN label is required to be placed on the front left (driver’s side) side of the trailer. If a trailer was quartered, the VIN must be placed in the quadrant that is closest to the tow vehicle and on the same side as the driver. NATM Compliance Decal

Tracks #5: Safety chains or cables including attachment devices and methods are properly installed.

#7: Owner’s manual includes required tire information.

Summary: Each safety chain/cable needs to have a separate attachment point to the tongue of the trailer. Two safety chains shall be permanently fastened (i.e. bolted, anchored) to the trailer tongue, one on each side. The safety chains shall be connected from the trailer tongue to the hitch assembly or to other towing vehicle members meeting the specified strength requirements.

Summary: NHTSA’s tire information must also be provided to each customer. This can be done by including the required items in an existing owner’s manual, providing NHTSA’s own rendition of the document, “Tire Safety: Everything Rides on It,” or again, by providing one of NATM’s generic owner’s manuals. For more information about purchasing generic owner’s manuals, visit www.natmshop.com or contact NATM at (785) 272-4433.

#6: NHTSA notification statement is provided to each owner in at least 10-point font. Summary: NHTSA’s brief defect reporting notification statement is required to be provided to all customers and is usually found within the owner’s manual but can be provided in a separate document. The easiest way to be sure of compliance is to use one of NATM’s generic owner’s manuals. For more information about purchasing generic owner’s manuals, visit www.natmshop.com or contact NATM at (785) 272-4433.

#9: Tire placard is applied to all required trailers, correctly completed, and information verified.

#10: The manufacturer maintains and retains tire identification record of new tires provided to first purchaser (other than for resale) of each new unit. Summary: In relation to the first item, each manufacturer is to record the tire identification number (TIN) for each tire sold and tie it to the VIN of the trailer on which it was installed. This item can be complicated given not all trailers are shipped with tires attached and thus, compliance can be accomplished through different methods.

Summary: Tire placard is applied proximate to the certification label, completed as in the example below, and correct for the tires mounted on each trailer with a GVWR of 10,000 lbs. or less.

For more information, contact NATM to request the Federal Lighting Equipment Location Requirements poster by emailing NATM at NATMHQ@natm.com or by calling (785) 272-4433. The above items are but a small sampling of the Compliance Verification Program checklist, but any item has the potential to result in a failure. Performance Evaluations: Best Practices

Tracks

Performance Evaluations: Best Practices Submitted by Truck and Trailer Makers Employee evaluation is an important part of a company’s quality assurance. Many companies formally evaluate an employee’s performance and progress after an initial trial period, and then again on an annual or semi-annual basis. Although performance evaluations can improve productivity and employee morale, many employers do not make them a high priority because they are time consuming and sometimes viewed by managers as having little practical value.

Why Conduct a Performance Evaluation? • • • • • • •

To promote growth and competence and to increase employee productivity To facilitate employer-employee communication and develop relationships To hold all employees to the same standard of performance and identify high and low performers To let employees know how they are doing To document incidents of poor performance for future reference To establish valid defenses for employment litigation and legitimate reasons for termination To determine the level of salary increases

From a productivity perspective, regular performance reviews can ensure employees are meeting performance expectations. They can also help evaluate individuals, teams, and managers and find underperformers that need to be addressed. In addition, the increasing number of discrimination and wrongful termination lawsuits illustrates the importance of performance documentation as a means of justifying the legitimate business reasons underlying an employer’s personnel decisions. A series of well-documented evaluations that clearly describe an employee’s poor performance provides the employer with objective evidence of legitimate and nondiscriminatory reasons to support a job transfer, demotion, layoff, or termination. Failure to conduct formal evaluations may leave an employer vulnerable in a discrimination or wrongful discharge lawsuit.

Best Practices When Implementing a Performance Evaluation Process •

•

46

Perform formal evaluations at the same time for everyone each year. While this increases the workload of managers and supervisors during review time, it forces direct comparisons of employees and establishes an unbiased system. Have regular meetings with supervisory staff. Supervisors will learn from each other’s experiences. Provide adequate training and insist on candid observations. November/December 2021

Clearly communicate to employees what their duties are and satisfactory performance standards. Accomplish this through periodic reviews of job descriptions and training, and both formal and informal appraisal. Tell employees the criteria upon which their performance will be reviewed. Develop standards and establish reasonable goals for employees. Make sure employees understand the consequences of their failure to improve. Don’t wait until the annual evaluation to provide feedback; offer it throughout the year. Give both positive and negative feedback. Document poor performance in writing. This can be done in the form of coaching, training, discipline, or assessment. Ask employees to complete a self-assessment in addition to the review completed by the manager. This can identify areas where the employee and manager disagree on performance or expectations. Give employees the opportunity to review, challenge, and comment on the evaluation. Meet with employees to discuss all evaluations and expectations. Keep a record of the meeting. Have employees sign the evaluation. While the employee may not agree with it, it provides evidence that the employee has seen it and has been given a copy. If the employee refuses to sign, the individual giving the evaluation should sign it along with a witness noting that the employee was given a copy. Establish a review process for evaluations. This will keep the supervisor honest and ensure supervisory staff is performing reviews consistently. Give employees time to improve and offer resources and assistance if appropriate. Follow established procedures strictly. Apply all procedures and standards equally to all employees. Use other supervisory personnel in the process, if possible, to mitigate claims of personality conflict. This will enhance credibility if all evaluations point to the same conclusion. Make sure employees understand the consequences for failure to perform at an acceptable level. There should be no surprises in employee supervision and evaluation. Managers should be held responsible for helping subordinates develop and improve. Maintain confidentiality in employee performance evaluations.

Trailer Warranty Policies

Tracks

Trailer Warranty Policies NATM tracks all complaints regarding NATM and its members. The sources of these complaints include customers, members, non-members, and numerous other parties. Per NATM’s Strategic Plan and internal quality program, NATM staff members regularly identify the most frequent complaints received and create a plan of action to address the issues. NATM staff have determined one such frequent complaint is fixing issues that arise under the customer’s trailer warranty policy.

help NATM members understand customer needs and assist in attracting and retaining satisfied consumers, NATM asks that manufacturers consider alternative options for addressing similar warranty concerns. In the interest of promoting trailer safety and customer satisfaction in an increasingly global marketplace, manufacturers may find it beneficial to revisit their warranty policies with their business managers and legal counsel.

Warranty policies vary in their terms and coverage. Some trailer manufacturers require customers to bring the trailer to their headquarters to make warranty repairs. Other manufacturers utilize their nearest branch location to assist customers with warranty repairs in a timely fashion. In other cases, shipping parts directly to the customer may rectify the warranty claim. Some manufacturers have even gone so far as to allow unaffiliated repair shops to make the repairs and have reimbursed customers.

The following NATM Member companies can be utilized to develop or improve your company’s warranty programs:

NATM has received many complaints that manufacturer’s warranty policies only provide warranty claim repairs at the manufacturer’s headquarters. With trailers being sold in a global market, many consumers have noted they reside or have purchased their trailers hundreds, if not thousands, of miles from the trailer manufacturer’s headquarters. These customers note that the cost of transporting their trailer to the manufacturer is both cost and time prohibitive. Further, many of these individuals use the affected trailer for their businesses and the loss of income during travel is not desirable. These customer complaints fall outside the scope of NATM’s Compliance Verification Program. However, in an effort to

Exciting Days Ahead for EQ United

Exciting Days Ahead for EQ United By Joel Foreman, Marketing Specialist

Days Corporation (Equalizer Systems & Days Distribution & Logistics) rebrands to better align with primary business while paying tribute to late owner. Days Corporation has undergone a rebrand, and the company has changed its name to EQ United. Founded in 1913, Days has explored many branches of business over the years. While the company is no longer owned by a Days family member, late owner Jim Sproatt had a vision to move the company forward, leading to what EQ United is today. Jim started mowing grass for the company, then grew in the ranks through his 54-year career with EQ United. The company’s continued growth and the rebrand is inspired by Jim.

Jim had the idea for Equalizer Leveling Systems in the early 1990s, but it was met with resistance. He had to push this idea into existence. Jim used every resource he had to buy out the last partner, and in 2008 became the sole majority owner. He made his dream a reality and now the company is stronger than ever. Days Corporation, Equalizer Systems and Days Distribution & Logistics have all been rebranded as follows: • EQ United is now the corporate umbrella, formerly known as Days Corporation. • EQ Systems is what was known as Equalizer Systems. • EQ Logistics is what was known as Days Distribution & Logistics. www.NATM.com

Exciting Days Ahead for EQ United

Tracks “Our company has a lot of history and as time moves forward, things naturally change,” says Jason Loose, COO of EQ United. “We took a very hard look at who we are and why we are a great company with two great divisions and a strong team. The answer for us is Jim Sproatt. Jim’s legacy stems from hard work and an innate ability to see potential in people and endeavors. Jim managed this company with a spark in his eye and a feeling of family and pride. We wanted to find a way to honor his legacy as we grow into the future, so we are taking on a new approach to build on our strengths and our innovative mindset. Through this process, we have experienced what it means to be a strongly united company.”

The next step in restructuring includes a move. The company has purchased a 210,000-square-foot facility in Michigan. EQ Systems, EQ Harness and the corporate offices of EQ United will relocate to Michigan in 2022. EQ Logistics will remain in Elkhart and add in the warehouse space that EQ Systems is moving from in Elkhart. EQ United (EQ Systems, EQ Logistics and EQ Harness) values and mission have not changed and remain true. EQ as whole will continue to innovate quality solutions that make life better for customers, employees, and the community.

With Equalizer Systems making up the bulk of the company’s business, it was time to create a business model and structure that supported its biggest assets. Along with that, Days Distribution & Logistics will be known as EQ Logistics to better suit the warehousing and delivery for customers to the RV market and beyond. The newest venture is EQ Harness. They’ve always done wire harness manufacturing for themselves, but they started doing it for other people and it has taken off. There’s a big growth opportunity for EQ Harness.
